The purpose of the paper was to test how the content of carbon and alloying elements in steels influence the structure and properties of boronized layers. The following grades of steels were used during the tests: C45, C99U, 41Cr4, 42CrMo4, 45SG, 50HS, 60G, and 102Cr6. In the process of boronizing, the two-phase layer of borides of FeB and Fe2B were obtained on the tested steels with a hardness from 1900 HV0.1 for boride FeB to 1600 HV0.1 for Fe2B, irrespective of the chemical composition of the core/substrate. As the content of carbon and alloying elements in steels increase, the structure of borides becomes more compact, and the needles are thicker. The richer in alloying elements the core and the more carbon in steel, the thinner is the boride layer. After boronizing, the layer of FeB and Fe2B with a thickness of approx. 110 μm for C45 steel to approx. 90 μm for 102Cr6 steel was obtained. The test results indicate that the brittleness of borides increases in steels with the addition of Cr, and it decreases in steels containing Si and Mn. The highest wear resistance was obtained in steel 102Cr6.

Zbadano wpływ zawartości węgla i dodatków stopowych w stali na strukturę i właściwości warstw borowanych. Do badań zastosowano stale: C45, C99U, 41Cr4, 42CrMo4, 45SG, 50HS, 60G i 102Cr6.

This paper analyses the boronizing treatment which was performed by means of CO2 molecular laser with a power of 2600 W. Boron was introduced by remelting the paste with a thickness of 40÷120 mm, containing amorphous boron or iron-boron, use the material of the substrate, such as Armco iron or C45 and C90 types of steel. The influence of the boron paste thickness, variable P power from P = 0.78 kW to 1.82 kW, with the constant laser beam scanning velocity v = 2.88 m/min and material type on the mechanism of formation, microstructure, microhardness and frictional wear resistance of the formed layers (surface structure). After laser boronizing the surface layer consists of zone-structured tracks: melted zone, heat affected zone and the substrate. The melted zone contains boride-martensitic eutectic, in C45 and C90 types of steel there under the remelted zone there is a heat affected zone which is composed of a martensitic structure. With the increase in the laser power, width and depth of laser tracks increases in all the iron alloys with variable thickness of the applied amorphous boron paste. With the increase in the thickness of the boron paste, width of the laser tracks increases and depth of the laser tracks decreases with the constant beam power. The maximum dimensions of the remelted zone for C45 steel were: approx. 600 μm (width) and 350 μm (depth). The highest average microhardness of the surface layer reaches approx. 1500 HV0.1 and it decreases with the increase in power for all the iron alloys. Microhardness and frictional wear resistance of the layer boronized by means of laser with the use of the paste containing iron-boron is lower than that of the layer boronized with the use of the paste containing only boron.

The paper presents the influence of diffusional boronizing, borochromizing processes, and laser modification on microstructure, microhardness, and frictional wear resistance of C45 constructional steel. The borochromizing process consists of two stages: first the boronizing was applied, and then chromizing was carried out as a second step. The boronizing was performed at 900°C for 4h, and then chromizing at 1020°C for 7h using the gas-contact method in powder containing amorphous boron and ferrochrome. Then, the boronized and borochromized layer was modified by remelting it using a TRUMPH CO2 2600W-power laser. The microstructure after diffusional boronizing and borochromizing consists of needle-like iron borides with a thickness of 80 μm and 100 μm and with a microhardness of 1400 HV0.1–1850 HV0.1. Three zones are formed after laser modification: the remelted zone MZ (eutectic mixture of borides and martensite) with a thickness of 100–120 μm, a martensitic heat affected zone (HAZ), and the core. The microhardness in the remelted zone is approx. 1200 HV0.1, as a result of which there appears a milder hardness gradient between the surface and the core. It was found that the frictional wear resistance of the boride layers modified by chromium and laser is higher than that of the layers after diffusional boronizing.

Borowanie przeprowadzono w temperaturze i czasie wynoszącym 900°C i 4 h, a chromowanie w 1020°C i 7 h w mieszaninie proszkowej zawierającej bor amorficzny i żelazo-chrom.

The analysis of the microstructure and hardness measurements after processes allowed to select the best parameters of volume heat treatment, such as: hardening of 900°C in water and tempering at 560°C for 1 hour. Under these conditions a higher and more uniform structure and micro-hardness of 300 HV0.1 were obtained. The process of laser alloying of steel with boron was carried for the selected parameters the volume heat treatment. Laser boriding consisted of applying paste with amorphous boron on the steel surface, and then remelting with a laser beam. Laser heat treatment (LHT) was carried out with a CO2 technology laser TRUMPH type TLF 2600 Turbo of nominal power of 2.6 kW. The following parameters of laser heat treatment were used: laser beam density power q = 37.26 kW/cm2, laser beam scanning velocity v = 3.84 m/min, laser beam diameter d = 2 mm and distance between tracks f = 0.50 mm. As a result, laser boriding produced the microstructure composed of remelted zone containing boride-martensit eutectic and heat affected zone with a mild gradient of microhardness of 1300 HV0.1 at the surface to 300 HV0.1 in substrate.

Grubość powłoki wynosiła 40 μm i 80 μm.

Uzyskano wykresy: rozciągania (naprężenia w funkcji wydłużenia względnego), ściskania monotoniczne-go (silą w funkcji ugięcia) oraz małocyklowego zmęczenia (wartość siły i ugięcia w funkcji liczby cykli). Wykazano, że najlepsze właściwości wytrzymałościowe mają próbki nawęglane, a gorsze borowane i boronaweglane. Podczas rozciągania większą wytrzymałość niż inne próbki wykazują próbki borowane dzięki bardziej plastycznemu rdzeniowi stali.
