The article presents an acoustic analysis of a model research room, designed and constructed as part of the infrastructure of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. The facility was built as a lightweight steel structure filled with sandwich panels, located inside a measurement and research hall, which allowed for the elimination of environmental noise and provided optimal conditions for conducting measurements in a low acoustic background. Based on design documentation and manual measurements, a three-dimensional geometric model of the room was created using Odeon Acoustics software. Acoustic simulations were carried out based on this model, with actual material parameters assigned. To verify the model, in situ measurements were conducted using a point sound source and six receiving points. The results obtained from the computer simulations showed very high agreement with the measurement data, confirming the accuracy of reproducing real conditions in the simulation environment.

W artykule przedstawiono analizę akustyczną modelowego pomieszczenia badawczego, zaprojektowanego i wykonanego w ramach infrastruktury Wydziału Inżynierii Środowiska Politechniki Śląskiej w Gliwicach. Na podstawie dokumentacji projektowej i obmiarów ręcznych wykonano trójwymiarowy model geometryczny pomieszczenia w programie Odeon Acoustics i przeprowadzono symulacje akustyczne, którym przypisano rzeczywiste parametry materiałowe. W celu weryfikacji modelu wykonano pomiary in situ z zastosowaniem punktowego źródła dźwięku oraz sześciu punktów odbiorczych.

Good speech intelligibility in university classrooms is crucial to the learning process, ensuring that students can clearly hear all conversations taking place in the classroom. While it is well known that speech intelligibility depends on the geometrical characteristics of a space and the properties of its surfaces, other factors need also to be considered. Among the most important are: the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems used in classrooms. Fan noise from HVAC systems increases the background noise level (BNL), negatively affecting speech intelligibility. In addition, the movement of air caused by these systems alters room acoustic variables. Although this dynamic situation is often overlooked in the early design stages, HVAC systems are often active during lectures and influence acoustics variables, especially the speech transmission index (STI). In this study, the impact of HVAC systems on the STI was measured in five different unoccupied classrooms in the Rafet Kayıș Faculty of Engineering at Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University. The results were evaluated according to relevant standards. The results of these evaluations offer insights for researchers, architects, and engineers working in the field of acoustics.

Modern room acoustics employs a variety of objective measures to characterize the acoustical properties of interiors. Despite these advancements, the relationship between these parameters and subjective assessments of room acoustics remains unclear. Subjective perception, particularly listening effort (LE), plays a critical role in how individuals experience acoustic environments, even when speech intelligibility (SI) is high. This study aims to bridge the gap between objective acoustic measures and subjective listening experiences. We conducted experiments in three rooms equipped with reverberation enhancement systems, resulting in nine different acoustic settings. Objective parameters, including reverberation time (RT), early decay time (EDT), clarity (C50), and the speech transmission index (STI), were measured. Additionally, subjective SI was assessed, and LE was rated on a 7-step Likert scale by 180 volunteers with normal hearing. The analysis revealed a nonlinear relationship between LE and both RT20 and EDT (R2 = 0.6), with an even weaker correlation for LE vs. C50 (R2 = 0.46). The Pearson correlation coefficient for STI was 0.74, compared to 0.55 for SI. These findings indicate that the relationship between LE and objective parameters, as well as SI, is complex and not straightforward. Our results suggest the importance of incorporating LE into room acoustic design and evaluation. The disparity between objective measures and subjective experiences suggests that LE may be a crucial factor in accurately assessing acoustic environments. This approach sheds the light on a more holistic understanding of acoustic quality that prioritizes human perception.

When evaluating speech intelligibility (SI) in automotive cabins, binaural measurements typically employ a fixed dummy head. However, the impact of listener head positions on SI in nonuniform cabin sound fields remains unclear. This study analyzed SI under various listener head positions in an automotive cabin. An artificial mouth was regarded as the speaker, which was placed in three passenger positions. Binaural room impulse responses were measured using a dummy head in the driver’s seat with various head positions. The results show that head position significantly affects SI, with variations of up to 7 dB in octave band magnitudes, more than one just-noticeable difference in the speech transmission index, and shifts of up to 2.5 dB in the speech-reception threshold. SI variability depends on the speaker’s location. Directivity patterns play a crucial role in the front-passenger position, while seat occlusion affects SI at the back-right position, causing substantial decreases below a certain height threshold. At the back-left position, head positions close to the headrest enhance SI due to distance and reflections. Minor head displacements (4 cm apart) generally have insignificant effects on SI, except near seat obstructions or reach critical thresholds.

To precision calculate the speech transmission index (STI), it is necessary to know the level and spectrum of the interfering noise. Simplified design methods used in public address systems are limited to obtaining an appropriate signal-to-noise ratio based on A weighted sound levels. For this reason, among others, guidelines for designers usually contain information on typical interfering noise levels and do not provide information on the noise spectrum. As shown in the paper, the effect of the noise spectrum on STI can be very high, and when such spectrum cannot be obtained by measurement or computation, standardised spectra appropriate for a given type of noise can be used for STI calculations.
EN
Knowledge of interfering noise is necessary for the correct design of a public address system. Noise sound levels can be obtained, for example, from BS 5389-1. It is more difficult to acquire knowledge of the interfering noise spectra, and the spectrum is also important for calculating speech intelligibility. As shown in the paper, for crowd noise, it is possible to determine the spectrum by pairing the level of noise to the speech spectrum for appropriate vocal effort. The error in determining the speech transmission index for public address systems for such selected noise spectra, relative to values for measurement-acquired noise spectra, is acceptable.

This study evaluated the combined sensitivity analysis of several room acoustic descriptors: reverberation time (T30), center time (Ts), early decay time (EDT), definition (D50), clarity (C50), useful-to-detrimental sound ratio (U50), and speech transmission index (STI); and also it assessed how these descriptors responded jointly to different acoustic-structural factors. The first-order factors were background noise (A), acoustic ceiling tile sound absorption coefficient (B), confinement (C), and occupancy (D), along with their interaction effects. A novel method is proposed for this joint evaluation of sensitivity factors. This method involves in situ measurements and an unreplicated 2^4 factorial design, which has been validated by ODEON software. The significance of input factors is determined using artificial neural networks (ANN) and the modified profile method (MPM), validated by multiple linear regression (MLR). Three significant correlation groups are identified at p < 0:05: group 1 (EDT, T30, Ts), group 2 (C50, D50), and group 3 (U50, STI). The ceiling material sound absorption (B) is found to affect reverberation (groups 1 and 2), while background noise (A) impacts STI and U50. A weak correlation is found between D50 and STI. These results are confirmed by the MLR and MPM methods.

Celem badań symulacyjnych było określenie technicznych środków umożliwiających uzyskanie warunków środowiska akustycznego w pomieszczeniach biurowych open space wg ISO 22955:2021 i PN-EN ISO 3382-3:2022.

The purpose of the simulation tests was to determine the technical means to obtain appropriate acoustic environment conditions in an open-plan office room (e.g. ISO 22955:2021 and EN ISO 3382-3:2022). Achieving adequate sound absorption requires the use of a sound-absorbing ceiling. Obtaining SPL attenuation of the distance requires the use of sound-absorbing materials on walls and acoustic screens. Achieving adequate reduction of speech intelligibility also requires the use of masking sounds.

Highpass filters are commonly used in the signal chain of public address systems. One of the reasons for using a highpass filter is to protect the loudspeaker from unwanted low-frequency signals. In addition, it can increase the intelligibility of speech. In this paper, the effect of the cutoff frequency and order of a highpass filter on the speech transmission index, the crest factor, and the sound level are presented. Analyses were performed for an ideal transmission channel, taking into account reverberation time, interfering noise, and high levels of sound. A computer model of the public address system developed by the author, based on the direct STIPA method, was used. This model enables analyses in the nonlinear range of power amplifier operation, which is often used in public address systems but is not considered in commercially available simulation programs.
EN
The effect of the power amplifier on speech intelligibility in public address systems is often marginalised – i.e. it is assumed that it does not introduce significant signal distortion. This approach is justified when the linear range of the amplifier is used. The large crest factor of the speech signal and economic considerations mean that the amplifier also works in the non-linear range. In this paper, the effect of power amplifier distortion on the speech transmission index for public address systems (STIPA) is presented. In the first step, this influence was evaluated by measurements for Class AB and D amplifiers. Then, a computer model of the public address system based on the direct STIPA method, taking into account the non-linear properties of the amplifier, was proposed. Using the computer model, the optimum amplifier driving values were determined taking into account the reverberation time and interfering noise.speech transmission index; power amplifier; public address system.

In this paper, the relationship between Chinese speech intelligibility (CSI) scores of the elderly aged 60-69 and over 70 years old, and speech transmission index (STI) were investigated through the auralization method under different reverberation time and background noise levels (BNL, 40 dBA and 55 dBA). The results show that the CSI scores of the elderly are significantly worse than those of young adults. For the elderly over 70, the CSI scores become much lower than those of young adults. To be able to achieve the same CSI, the elderly, especially those over 70, need much higher STI and greater SNR than the young. The elderly aged 60-69 and over 70 need to improve their STI by 0.419 and 0.058 respectively under BNL 40 dBA, as well as 0.282 and 0.072 respectively under BNL 55 dBA, so as to obtain the same CSI scores as the young adults.

Computer models currently used for the simulation of the speech transmission index (STI) calculate the STI using the statistical method or are based on numerically determined impulse response of the transmission channel. The limitation of both these computational methods is that they do not allow to take into account the nonlinear properties of the transmission channel and fluctuating background noise. This paper presents a proposition of a model based on the direct STIPA method. This model allows computer simulations of STIPA for distributed sound systems, and enables analysis to include both changes in signal dynamics and fluctuating background noise. The paper presents the idea of the model and validation of its basic elements - the generator and the analyser. The possibilities of using the model for computer simulation of outdoor public address systems were also discussed.

Projektowanie akustyczne otwartych pomieszczeń do prac administracyjnych (tzw. biurowych open space) można podzielić na dwa etapy. Etap pierwszy, obligatoryjny (podstawowy) wymagany przez przepisy, zakłada uzyskanie w pomieszczeniu wymaganych warunków pogłosowych (odpowiednio dużej chłonności akustycznej; omówiony został w artykule autora w „Materiałach Budowlanych” nr 8/2019). Etap drugi (dodatkowy) polega na takiej aranżacji pomieszczeń i stanowisk pracy oraz uwzględnieniu w pomieszczeniu różnych dodatkowych wyrobów dźwiękochłonnych, np. ekranów akustycznych, aby uzyskać w nim wymagane warunki propagacji (a właściwie separacji) dźwięków mowy między stanowiskami pracy. W ramach projektowania dodatkowego podano wyniki obliczeń metodą wg PN-EN ISO 3382-3:2012 siedmiu wariantów adaptacji akustycznej pomieszczenia.

Acoustic design of open plan office can be divided into two stages. The first stage, obligatory by Polish regulations, is to obtain the room's required sound absorption. It was discussed in the author's article in "Building Materials" No. 8/2019. The second (additional) stage consists in such arrangement of rooms and work stations and taking into account various additional sound-absorbing products, e.g. acoustic screens, in order to obtain the required conditions for the propagation (or actually separation) of speech sounds between workplaces. As part of the additional design, results of calculations according to the EN ISO 3382-3:2012 method of seven variants of the room's acoustic treatment are given.

W artykule omówiono parametry akustyczne wymagane w ocenie ekologicznej. Spośród wielu powszechnie stosowanych systemów na świecie zaprezentowano brytyjski system BREEAM oraz amerykański system LEED.

Certification is mainly based on multi-criteria assessment of buildings, including the assessment of noise and acoustic comfort. In the Polish legislation, acoustic comfort is regarded considerably less strictly than, for example, thermal comfort and energy savings. However, in the process of design of so-called “green buildings”, in particular office and educational buildings, some importance is attached to parameters such as reverberation time or speech transmission index. The article presents the required, in the environmental assessment, acoustic parameters. Among the many commonly used systems in the world, two were selected for discussion: the British system BREEAM and American system LEED.

PL
Artykuł dotyczy przewidywanego czasu pogłosu za pomocą znanych modeli teoretycznych. Wykonano pomiary czasu pogłosu w ośmiu salach dydaktycznych Wydziału Budownictwa Politechniki Śląskiej. Następnie przeprowadzono obliczenia czasu pogłosu za pomocą znanych formuł teoretycznych. Wyniki obliczeń teoretycznych porównano z wynikami pomiarów i określono najlepszy model szacujący czas pogłosu dla przedstawionych pomieszczeń.

The present study reports on the speech intelligibility as measured by speech transmission index (STI) and useful-to-detrimental sound ratios (U50) in university classrooms. Acoustic measurements were made in 12 quietly occupied university classrooms. The measured impulse responses of the classrooms were used to determine the modulation transfer function, m(F), for the STI calculation according to IEC 60268-16. U50 values were determined from both signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and C50 values. The mean STI and frequency-weighted U50 values for the 12 occupied classrooms were strongly linearly related. The results showed that classrooms with U50 values of about +0.5 dB correspond to STI values of 0.60, indicating ‘good’ acoustical conditions for speech intelligibility. The results illustrate that the U50 measure can be a more practically useful means of assessing and understanding room acoustics conditions for real speech communication in active classrooms.

In the paper we put forward a proposition of acoustic adaptation of classrooms based on the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The main objective of such an adaptation is to increase speech intelligibility aiming to enhance the teaching quality level. The model is based on four main criteria which have impact both on the teaching process and on the adaptation costs. The said criteria comprise reverberation time, speech transmission index STI, financial cost of the adaptation and non-economic costs. The priorities and significance of the main criteria are identified by way of measureable calculations involving reverberation time, STI, costs and expertise, intangible, non-economic cost estimations. The AHP analysis should be viewed as a framework facilitating decision making processes applied in scientific or engineering analyses. The paper demonstrates the acoustic adaptation method of classrooms in terms of acoustic parameters and implementation costs of such an adaptation. The AHP analysis can help architects and classroom users adopt a more rational approach to further optimization and work out a definite building process which could provide a platform to compare different alternatives on a common and comprehensive basis.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono propozycję adaptacji akustycznej klas szkolnych w oparciu o proces hierarchii analitycznej (AHP). Analiza AHP może pomóc architektom i użytkownikom klas szkolnych w racjonalnym podejściu do dalszej optymalizacji i opracowania konkretnego aspektu procesu budowlanego.

Część badawcza pracy obejmuje analizę wpływu położenia w pomieszczeniu materiałów pochłaniających dźwięk na zmianę wartości czasu pogłosu i wskaźnika transmisji mowy STI. Wytyczne uzupełnione zostały opisem stosowanych modeli teoretycznych występujących zarówno w odpowiedniej normie jak i propozycją własną, w szczególności modelu STI(T).

The paper presents the legally binding acoustic requirements involving certain interiors, i.e. the interiors of public utility buildings, or multi-family houses as well as the calculation models of acoustic parameters describing these interiors. The legally compulsory standards refer not only to the reduction of reverberation noise but they also concern the rooms used for verbal presentations. In this respect, they involve the problem of ensuring an appropriate understanding of speech in a room. Therefore, in the paper presented here we offer the potential designers some suggestions involving the acoustic shaping of rooms. The research part of the paper comprises the analysis involving the impact of the location of sound absorbing materials in a room on the change of reverberation time and speech transmission index STI. For that purpose, two rooms were modeled in the program ODEON. One of the rooms was cuboidshaped and the other was cube-shaped, and they both had the same cubature. Then, the simulations of reverberation time and speech transmission index for different locations of sound absorbing materials were carried out. In conclusion, the presented paper is discussing the problems involving the formation of acoustic conditions in rooms in terms of speech signal reception, and the carried out analyses enable to put forward some guidelines for designers who work on shaping the interior of rooms. The guidelines were complemented with the description of the applied theoretical models, both presented in a specific standard as well as the authors’ own proposition, in particular involving the model STI(T).
