This study compares the digitalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Poland and Latvia, two Central and Eastern European countries facing similar challenges in meeting the European Union’s Digital Decade 2030 targets. This study uses a comparative descriptive research design that integrates data from Eurostat, national statistics, the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking, and the Network Readiness Index. The findings show that while SMEs in both countries face financial, human resource, and organizational barriers to digitalization, Latvia engages more actively with European Union (EU) digitalization projects proportionally, despite Poland’s SMEs reporting slightly higher basic digital intensity in some years. Key challenges include high technology costs, a shortage of skilled IT staff, and slower technological adoption in smaller firms. Both countries have implemented national strategies and support programs to increase SME digitalization, using the EU and national funds. However, they are still behind the EU average for most DESI indicators related to SME digital intensity. This study highlights the need for continued policy efforts and cross-national knowledge sharing to bridge the SME digitalization gap and increase competitiveness in the digital economy.

Objective: This work aimed to establish the relationships between individual types of costs related to the planned budget of an innovative project and their impact on the values of future net cash flows and budget amounts. Design/methodology/approach: Based on literature research, the following hypotheses were formulated: The product innovation budget depends on the amount of equity; The planned amounts of cost types are interrelated and dependent on the total value of future net cash flows from the product innovation. They were then verified using the Pearson correlation matrix, where lateral data were supplemented by SMEs. Findings: Based on the study, NPV was found to be significantly positively correlated with the planned costs associated with "Intangible assets". Technically and technologically advanced projects force incurring higher costs, which translates into higher net cash flows in the future. Meanwhile, there was no relationship between the planned budget and equity of SMEs. Research limitations/implications: The limitation of the relatively small research group was noted, which does not allow generalizing the results. However, it gives inspiration to expand the research. Practical implications: Our findings allow for matching the financial needs of the project with the economic sustainability and security of the entity planning the product innovation. Social implications: Innovation projects ensure the economic and financial stability of SMEs, which directly translates into employment and social efficiency in regions. Originality/value: The article presents the relationships between the individual types of costs associated with the product innovation project and their impact on the NPV indicator.

Despite progressive occupational health and safety (OHS) laws, South Africa experiences high workplace injury rates, particularly in the manufacturing sector. Compliance with health and safety standards is notably poor among small and medium manufacturing enterprises (SMEs) due to limited time and financial resources, a problem exacerbated in resource-constrained small-size manufacturing enterprises. Understanding employees’ perspectives on safety culture factors is essential to promoting a stronger safety culture within South African-based manufacturing SMEs. Therefore, this study sought to measure South African-based manufacturing SME employees’ perceptions of safety culture factors and to determine whether small-sized and medium-sized manufacturing enterprise employees differ concerning their perceptions of these safety culture factors. Data were collected from 487 South African-based manufacturing SME employees. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, reliability assessment and an independent samples t-test. Results indicate that employees’ perceptions of safety culture factors at their workplace are generally favourable. However, employees in small-sized manufacturing enterprises reported significantly less favourable perceptions of management commitment to safety, safety training, compliance and safety policies than those in medium-sized manufacturing enterprises. Improving safety culture in small-sized manufacturing enterprises requires enhancing management commitment, communication with feedback, as well as implementing cost-effective training, safety incentives and clear policies, and improving safety compliance. Strengthening these safety culture areas within small-sized manufacturing enterprises can improve safety performance, even with resource constraints.

This study aims to validate the structural relationships between Strategic Management (SM), Organisational Culture (OC), and Organisational Performance (OP) in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), with a focus on OC’s mediating role. Using a quantitative approach, data from 622 SME managers in Algeria were analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS 4, SPSS 29, and JASP. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses (EFA/CFA) assessed the measurement model by applying maximum likelihood extraction with varimax rotation. EFA confirmed a robust three-factor structure (loadings > 0.40), while CFA initially showed suboptimal fit (CFI = 0.79, TLI = 0.779). Post-modification, fit indices improved, validating OC’s mediation between SM and OP. Results highlight OC’s critical role in enhancing SME performance through SM practices, emphasizing cultural alignment and strategic clarity. The study has limitations, which include cross-sectional design and regional focus; this suggests the need for future longitudinal studies and broader geographic validation. The study contributes by empirically testing these constructs in SMEs by offering practical insights for managers to leverage culture-driven strategies in resource-constrained contexts.

This study investigates the relationship between business process orientation (BPO) maturity and the innovativeness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Drawing on data from a representative sample of 1,286 Polish SMEs, the analysis employs logistic regression to examine the influence of five BPO maturity stages—process identification, mapping, measurement, ownership assignment, and continuous improvement—on four categories of innovation: product, process, organisational, and marketing. The findings indicate that process identification exerts a negative effect on all forms of innovation, whereas mapping, measurement, and ownership assignment exhibit no statistically significant impact. In contrast, continuous improvement emerges as a key driver, positively associated with all innovation types. The study underscores the inherent challenge of reconciling process orientation with creativity in SMEs, offering theoretical and practical implications for management and policy development.

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) that are operating in dynamic digital contexts and the process of how digital culture can be translated into innovation in organizations is poorly understood. The present paper explores how digital culture affects digital innovation in a sequential capability-based process. The paper states the serial mediating roles of digital capability and organizational readiness in relation to digital culture and digital innovation based on resource-based view and dynamic capabilities perspective. The survey data were collected among 118 Bali (Indonesia) based MSMEs that are digitally active and analyzed with the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The findings show that digital culture positively affects digital capability, which leads to organizational readiness. Organizational readiness has a very positive impact on digital innovation, and the digital culture and digital capability are not found to have any major direct impact on innovation. It is interesting to note that the results indicate the existence of a significant serial indirect effect, which confirms that digital culture is another driver of digital innovation only when it is transformed into digital capability and organizational readiness in an aligned process. These findings offer a process-based explanation of digital innovation and provide practical insights for MSMEs seeking to strengthen innovation through organizational readiness.

Artykuł opisuje szeregowe role pośredniczące zdolności cyfrowych i gotowości organizacyjnej w odniesieniu do kultury cyfrowej i innowacji cyfrowych w oparciu o perspektywę zasobową i perspektywę zdolności dynamicznych.

Purpose: The research focused on the cultural factors that condition the implementation of Industry 4.0/5.0 solutions. Design/methodology/approach: The research was conducted among those responsible for strategic decision-making in organizations. Data were obtained using the key informant technique. The research subject was small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises based in Poland. The research yielded a total of 171 correctly completed questionnaires. Quantitative methods were used in the research. The research procedure adopted involved conducting a survey and contacting entrepreneurs using the CASI (Computer-Assisted Self-administered Interviewing) technique, with support from the CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interview) technique. A tool diagnosing the existing cultural profile, including three dimensions: power distance, level of collectivism and tolerance of uncertainty, was used to conduct the research. Findings: It was shown that from the perspective of implementing Industry 4.0/5.0, organizations are culturally ready for its adoption. The organizations studied are characterized by a relatively small distance to power, and in other dimensions, the features of a creative culture prevail. The way of assessing results, work-life balance, motivational systems, or attachment to formal procedures, are just a few examples of areas requiring further managerial work and a potential source of organizational resistance. The cultural perspectives of implementing Industry 4.0/5.0 are positive. Research limitations/implications: The main limitations are the relatively small research sample (171 enterprises) and the static nature of the research, which only allows the organization to be captured from the perspective of a photograph. Originality/value: The article deepens understanding of the cultural determinants of Industry 4.0/5.0 implementation. The study also showed the main areas in need of support, especially in the areas of work-life balance, attachment to formal procedures and acceptance of existing standards.

Purpose: The aim of the article was to analyse the qualitative approach to product improvement by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) from the Visegrad Group (V4) countries (Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Hungary). Design/methodology/approach: The analysed results included a research sample of 379 companies in the electromechanical industry (machinery processing industry). The sample was obtained between March and September 2023 by means of a guided survey. Analyses of the results of quantitative research were carried out to verify the approaches of SMEs from V4 countries to pro-quality product, including comparative analyzes of the results obtained. Analyses were performed using the ANOVA test (repeated measure designs). The Mann Whitney U test was used to identify statistically significant differences in entrepreneurs' responses. The significance level adopted was a = 0.05. Findings: It has been shown that SMEs from V4 countries have different approaches to improving product quality. Additionally, it was shown that both in the case of pro-quality activities of SMEs from the V4 countries, the lowest consistency of assessments occurs in the following countries: Poland and Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, Slovakia and Hungary. Practical implications: Research results may contribute to more effective and coherent development activities of SMEs in the V4 countries as part of their sustainable development. Social implications: Based on the research conducted, it is possible to provide SMEs in V4 countries with a more adequate approach to undertake consistent and effective quality activities as part of the improvement of the product. Originality/value: Determining the current pro-quality approach to product improvement in SMEs in the V4 countries. The novelty is also the identification of the importance (level of importance) of these approaches in each V4 country, as well as the determination of the similarities and differences between these approaches in SMEs from countries in the Visegrad Group.

Purpose: The aim of the article was to analyse the pro-environmental approach to products improvement by SMEs from the Visegrad Group (V4) countries. Design/methodology/approach: The research was survey. The survey research was carried out in traditional (paper) and electronic form (MS FORMS). The survey was directed at electronic industries (machinery processing) belonging to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from V4 countries. The results presented in the article refer to sample size of 379 SMEs, obtained between March and September 2023. Results were analysed in statistical way, i.e.: ANOVA test and Mann Whitney U test by significance level equal to a = 0.05. Findings: SMEs in V4 countries have a similar approach to pro-environmental improving of products. It was shown that pro-environmental activities of SMEs from the V4 countries, the lowest consistency of assessments occurs in the following countries: Poland and Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, Slovakia and Hungary. Practical implications: The research results may contribute to more effective and coherent development activities of SMEs in the V4 countries as part of their sustainable development, and also to take appropriate actions that will be supporting qualitative and environmental products. Social implications: The results can help SME entrepreneurs improve their products to protect the natural environment. In addition, they can be the basis for the development of SMEs from the V4 countries and their unidirectional development, which includes not only improving the quality of products, but also caring for the environment. Originality/value: The originality of the research is the determination of the current pro-environmental approach to product improvement in SMEs in the V4 countries. The novelty is the provision of current data on the importance of improving pro-environmental products in SMEs from the V4 countries and their comparison between companies in the electrical machinery industry.
