Physical activity (PA) is a well-known, simple and effective preventive and therapeutic intervention for low back pain (LBP). In spite of the growing interest in active lifestyles and its benefits, more needs to be known about the relationship between energy expenditure, body mass and lumbar-pelvic kinematics during the forward bending movement in a group of young asymptomatic people who met PA guidelines. Young people can be identified as a future risk group of civilisation diseases and lumbar-hip kinematics can be considered as a predictor of LBP occurrence. The aim of this study was to identify the association of gender, self-reported energy expenditure, body mass index, and lumbar-hip kinematics in young people. Methods: Sixty-four students at pre-employment stage participated in the study. They declared moderate-to-high PA and activity-induced energy expenditure (AEE) was self-reported. Kinematic data of the lumbar spine, pelvis and hip were collected during forward bending using a 3D motion ca pture system. Results: Sex was found to be associated with pelvis ( = –0.38 p = 0.002) and lumbar mobility ( = 0.49, p < 0.001) during forward bending and BMI was related only to lumbar mobility ( = –0.41, p = 0.001). Recreation AEE significantly predicted hip flexion mobility ( = 0.38, p = 0.002). Conclusions: This study showed that among a sample of physically active young people, BMI, self-reported AEE and sex can partially predict lumbar-hip kinematics during trunk flexion. Recreational PA can be regarded as improving hip mobility and thus making forward bending more effective and less prone to injury.

This study was designed to evaluate the clinical applications of body mass index (BMI) and a percussion-entropy-based index (PEINEW) for predicting the development of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in a group of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. The study population comprised a sample of 90 subjects with diabetics (aged 37–86 years), who went through a blood test and photoplethysmography (PPG) measurement and were then followed for 5.5 years. Conventional parameters, including the small-scale multiscale entropy index (MEISS), pulse wave velocity with electrocardiogram located (PWVmean), and PEIoriginal, were computed and compared. A logistic regression model with PEINEW and a single categorical variable (BMI) showed a graded association between the diabetics, with a high BMI (i.e., ‘‘high” category) associated with a 12.53-fold greater risk of developing DPN relative to the diabetics with a low BMI (i.e., ‘‘low” category) (p = 0.001). The odds ratio for PEINEW was 0.893. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the diabetic patients with BMI > 30 had a significantly higher cumulative incidence of PN on follow-up than those with BMI [...] 30 (log-rank test, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that BMI and PEINEW are both important risk and protective factors for new-onset DPN from diabetes mellitus and, thus, BMI and percussion entropy calculation can provide valid information that may help to identify diabetics with a high BMI and a low PEINEW as being at increased risk of future DPN.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of obesity and age on body balance disorders in women over 60, especially whether obesity increases the FR in older females and whether age and obesity affect the same stabilographic parameters when it comes to the FR. Methods: The study consisted of 56 inactive females aged 71.77 ± 7.43 (SD). They were divided into groups according to age and obesity. Results: Obesity separately affects FRI12-6, static indicators with eyes closed (OSI EC, APSI EC, MLSI EC), and age affects FRI12-6 and static indices with eyes open (OSI EO, APSI EO). After considering design factors (age and obesity), there were statistically significant differences in OSI EO ( p = 0.027), APSI EO (p = 0.034), FRI12-6 ( p = 0.0002) between obese and non-obese participants in the age groups. There were no statistical differences between non-obese old and obese-young participants ( p = 0.863). The interaction between obesity and age in the FR in static indices and in FRI12-6 ( p = 0.73047) was not significant. Conclusions: Age and obesity affect the stabilographic parameters individually, but there is no interaction effect between them. The presence of only one of the above risk factors may increase the FR. Obesity affects stability, while age depends on other factors. If older people are not obese or fit, involutional changes could be reversed. The type of obesity and the location of the fat tissue should be taken into account in FR assessment.

Purpose: Etiology of hallux valgus (HV) remains unclear and effective treatments and prophylaxis for this condition are lacking and conclusions of researches concerning HV are inconsistent. Recognition of the function-structure interrelation in foot at the early stage of valgus alignment of first metatarsophalangeus joint (1stMTPJ) would help explain the etiology of HV. Methods: The frequency of weight-shifting patterns during walking and the body mass index (BMI) were assessed relative to goniometric measurements of the 1stMTPJ angle in adolescents. Weight-shifting patterns were identified with a plantar pressure analysis, performed with the GaitlineMaxline Distance method. Results: As the 1stMTPJ angle widened, the frequency distributions of identified weight-shifting patterns became increasingly lopsided, due to the favoring or disfavoring of one pattern at the expense of the other. The two sexes showed opposite trends in the weight-shifting patterns that were favored/disfavored, relative to participants with a 0º 1stMTPJ angle. The clear predominance of a central-shift pattern, at the expense of a medial-shift, occurred with the largest (20º) 1stMTPJ angle among girls. Additionally, the BMI distributions associated with 1stMTPJ angle characteristics showed opposite trends between the sexes. Conclusions: Valgus alignment of 1stMTPJ among adolescents were associated with limitations in weight-shifting freedom of the foot during walking, that could be involved in maintaining balance. An 1stMTPJ angle of 20º, where distinct limitations were observed, might serve as a criterion of HV pathology.

An original survey among ATV riders concerning the conditions in which they lost stability is conducted. The coordinates of the center of gravity of the ATV by riders with different Body Mass Indexes are determined. A simulation program on base mechanic-mathematical model to study the ATV’s motion is used. In this base the critical sideslip velocities and critical lateral overturn velocities of ATV at various riders’ Body Mass Index, curve radius and grip coefficients were calculated. The results show that riders’ Body Mass Index strongly affects critical velocities because of different coordinates of center of gravity.

Several factors have been associated with the presence of abnormally high plantar foot pressure including: (i) increased body weight, (ii) foot structure and (iii) walking strategy. It is predicted that the biomechanics of the foot is influenced by the structure of the foot, primarily the Medial Longitudinal Arch. The objective of this study was to examine if Body Mass Index and the foot arch have a direct effect on dynamic peak plantar pressure for healthy subjects. Following a clinical lower limb examination, the Tekscan HR mat was utilised for this study, plantar pressure was profiled at specific events during stance phase of gait including heel strike, midstance and toe off. Results indicated to the preferable normal arch as this produced a low plantar pressure distribution in all cases. The 2nd and 3rd metatarsal head region recorded the highest pressure for all arch types during dynamic analysis. The lowest pressure for the normal and overweight BMI was at toe-off. While the obese BMI group showed highest pressure during toe-off. The obese BMI flat arch subcategory indicated to functional ambulation differences. Future work involves comparing this healthy database to a demographically matched diabetic group.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between age, aerobic capacity (VO2 max) and other health indicators among 3 rescue groups. The type of training and the subjective perception of physical fitness obtained via the Assessment Questionnaire of Physical Fitness were also analysed. To obtain VO2 max, 37 firefighters, 22 lifeguards and 59 mine rescue workers had a treadmill test. Their body mass index and body fat percentage were also calculated. The results show a significant decline in VO2 max of the older participants, which affects the effectiveness of rescue work. Furthermore, the training of all groups was inconsistent and based on individual needs. Variable training and the decline in VO2 max with age affected the effectiveness of the rescue tasks of each group.

Wieloletnie badania dotyczące poborowych do wojska pozwoliły stworzyć pełny obraz kondycji biologicznej młodego pokolenia mężczyzn. Jednakże brakuje aktualnych opracowań poświęconych zagadnieniom rozwoju fizycznego mężczyzn pochodzących ze wschodnich regionów kraju. Stąd też w niniejszej pracy podjęto się oceny rozwoju fizycznego poborowych z czterech powiatów z terenu Południowego Podlasia. Materiał do niniejszej pracy stanowią wyniki badań uzyskane z Wojskowej Komisji Uzupełnień w Białej Podlaskiej.

Many years of research on conscripts have allowed one to build up a complete picture of the biological condition of the young generation of men. However, there are no current studies on the aspects of the physical development of men coming from the eastern regions of the country. Hence, this article attempts to examine the physical development of conscripts from four districts of Southern Podlasie. The article draws on the results obtained from the Military Replenishment Commission in Biała Podlaska. The research took place from February 6 to April 25, 2006. A total of 3,425 conscripts came from the followings districts: bialski, radzyński, parczewski and łukowski. Based on body height and mass, values of Ponderal Index (PI) and Body Mass Index (BMI) were calculated. The results were statistically analysed by calculating arithmetic means and standard deviations. The differences between conscripts coming from the different districts were estimated on the basis of the one-way analysis of variance ANOVA. It was found that conscripts coming from the eastern regions of the country demonstrated a similar level of physical development in comparison to their peers from the nationwide sample. As a result, not only do the results of the research presented reflect the state of the biological condition of the young generation of men, but they also provide a basis for a comparative analysis taking account of the variability between subjects and may also be used for comparative studies of conscripts from other regions of the country.

Celem badań była próba określenia zależności pomiędzy średnią temperaturą w obrębie wyznaczonych obszarów (R01-R28) a wskaźnikiem masy ciała BMI (Body Mass Index).

Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) is a therapy modality relying on the extreme cold exposure, within the range from -100 °C to -160 °C and duration not exceeding 2-3 minutes. One of the non-invasive methods of objectivization of systemic cryotherapy effects is thermovisual analysis The aim of this study was to assess the temperature changes of specific body regions in subjects exposed to whole--body cryotherapy in reference to the value of the BMI (body mass index). 36 healthy male volunteers aging from 22 to 49 (31,8 +/-3,1), body mass index ranging from 20 to 32 (25,8 +/- 6,2) were once exposed to WBC. Peripheral body temperature was measured by means of thermovision camera before 1 minute, 40 minutes as well as within 3 hours after WBC. Analyzed body thermograms were divided into 28 areas (marked R01-R28). Results suggest that there is no statistically significant correlation between the body mass index and peripheral temperature of selected areas. However, the statistically significant negative correlations between BMI and peripheral temperature values within some selected areas measured just after and 40 minutes after WBC, were noticed.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is an important problem among computer professionals. Hence the prevalence of CTS among computer professionals and risk factors were studied. 648 subjects were selected from 4,276 computer professionals from 21 companies with a simple random sampling method. CTS was diagnosed based on clinical features. The prevalence of CTS was found to be 13.1% (95% CI 10.5–15.7%). Subjects with over 8 years of computer work, over 12 hrs of work per day and system administrators were at a higher risk for CTS (OR 3.3, 4.9 and 2.5 respectively). Flexed or extended hand position had higher risk for CTS. Higher risk for CTS was found with higher exposure to computer work. Ergonomic considerations are important in facilitating proper positioning of hand while working with a computer. Further studies on CTS risk factors among computer professionals are essential for planning prevention.
