Maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) introduce operational paradigms for which no standard GUI designs or established operator roles currently exist. Conventional usability testing (UT) methods involving users are predominantly qualitative, limiting the precision of evaluations. While experienced system designers can partially compensate for this limitation, in the contexts of MASS-where operational conditions and operator roles are unprecedented-their experience offers less guidance. This underscores the need for UT methods that can efficiently support makers in developing and adapting schemata that remain well aligned with those of MASS operators. Leveraging recent advances in eye-tracking, this paper presents a conceptual UT method-a maker–user schemata alignment analysis-designed to support the research and development of GUI design for MASS. A proof-of-concept demonstration using scripted interactions illustrates how the method can reveal differences between makers’ and users’ schemata and quantify the extent of these divergences. The conceptual demonstration suggests the potential of the proposed method in providing both qualitative and quantitative assessments of maker–user schemata alignment, establishing a foundation for rigorous, human-centered evaluation frameworks as operational MASS systems are developed.

Machine vision systems are of paramount importance in the context of contemporary industrial quality control, wherein the reliability of object detection is contingent upon the conditions of image acquisition. It is evident that illumination is a pivotal factor in the context of inspection performance, exerting a substantial influence on factors such as image contrast, feature visibility, and detection accuracy. The present study investigates the influence of multispectral illumination on the detection of coloured polymer samples using a Keyence intelligent vision system. The experimental investigation was conducted using geometrically identical samples manufactured from the same material but differing in surface colour. Four colour variants, namely white, black, violet, and orange, were evaluated under seven illumination conditions, including white, red, green, blue, infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV), and ambient mode illumination. The acquired images were then subjected to analysis with respect to the visibility of geometric features, contour sharpness, and overall detection reliability. The findings of the present study demonstrated that the illumination wavelength exerts a significant influence on the detectability of objects and the quality of the resulting images. White illumination was found to provide the most consistent performance across all the samples that were tested. In addition, specific combinations of object colour and illumination spectrum were found to produce enhanced feature visibility. Infrared illumination exhibited favourable outcomes for surfaces of a darker hue, whilst ultraviolet illumination enhanced the visibility of specific features on samples of a coloured nature. The findings presented herein corroborate the significance of illumination selection in industrial machine vision applications and furnish pragmatic recommendations for the optimisation of inspection conditions when employing intelligent vision sensors. The findings may inform the development of more reliable automated quality control systems in Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 environments.

Przedstawione tutaj wyniki potwierdzają znaczenie doboru oświetlenia w przemysłowych zastosowaniach wizji maszynowej i dostarczają praktycznych zaleceń dotyczących optymalizacji warunków kontroli przy stosowaniu inteligentnych czujników wizyjnych.

Modern monitoring and detection systems frequently employ thermographic technologies, which enable observation of objects under low-light conditions or adverse weather. However, the effective detection and localization of objects using low-resolution thermal cameras remains a significant challenge. Despite their hardware limitations, such cameras offer numerous advantages, including low cost, compact size, and energy efficiency. This paper presents a custom developed algorithm for thermal image processing, designed for low-resolution cameras. It also describes and evaluates a scanning system that implements the developed algorithm. The system is based on a thermal imaging camera with a 32 × 24 pixel resolution and was constructed using commercially available electronic components. Particular attention is given to the optimization of filtering, binarization, and morphological operations, which reduce noise, enhance detection quality, and enable precise determination of the location of detected objects. The results of conducted experiments demonstrate that even with a low-resolution sensor, it is possible to obtain useful information regarding the movement and localization of objects. This opens new possibilities for the development of compact and cost-effective infrared monitoring systems.

Despite many years of effort and research, the current waste management problem remains. So far, no fully effective waste management system has been developed. Many programs and projects improve statistics on the percentage of waste recycled every year. Modern computer vision techniques supported by artificial intelligence are worth using in these efforts. In the article, we present a method of identifying plastic waste based on the asymmetry analysis of the image’s histogram containing the waste. The method is simple but effective ( 94% ), allowing it to be implemented on devices with low computing power, particularly microcomputers. Such devices will be used both at home and in waste-sorting plants.

As drone-based object detection technology continues to evolve, the demand is shifting from simply detecting objects to enabling users to accurately identify specific targets. For example, users can enter specific targets as prompts to accurately detect the desired objects. To address this need, an efficient text-guided object recognition model has been developed to improve the recognition of small objects. Specifically, an improved version of the existing YOLO-World model is presented. The proposed method replaces the C2f layer in the YOLOv8 backbone with a C3k2 layer, allowing for a more accurate representation of local features, especially for small objects or those with well-defined boundaries. In addition, the proposed architecture improves processing speed and efficiency by optimizing parallel processing, while contributing to a more lightweight model design. Comparative experiments on the VisDrone dataset show that the proposed model outperforms the original YOLO-World model, with precision increasing from 40.6% to 41.6%, recall from 30.8% to 31%, F1 score from 35% to 35.5%, and mAP@0.5 from 30.4% to 30.7%, confirming its improved accuracy. In addition, the model exhibits superior lightweight performance, with the number of parameters reduced from 4 million to 3.8 million and the FLOPs reduced from 15.7 billion to 15.2 billion. These results indicate that the proposed approach provides a practical and effective solution for accurate object detection in drone-based applications.

This study investigated the feasibility of iron-based binders under CO2 curing and the development of sustainable construction materials. Samples were prepared using varying concentrations of oxalic acid (0%, 2%, and 4%) using different mixing media (normal water and seawater), and their mechanical properties (compressive and flexural strength) and microstructural characteristics were evaluated. The results demonstrate that the best-performing oxalic acid concentrations—2% for normal water and 4% for seawater, which enhances compressive and flexural strengths by promoting carbonation reactions, leading to denser microstructures and the formation of stable carbonate phases. Excessive oxalic acid, however, hampers phase development and reduces strength due to increased acidity, porosity, and formation of weaker phases. Microstructural analysis revealed that moderate additions facilitate uniform pore distribution and controlled porosity, which accelerates carbonation and densification, while higher dosages or larger interconnected pores diminish performance. The mineral content of seawater, including Mg² ⁺, Cl ⁻, and SO₄² ⁻, synergistically interacts with oxalic acid to further enhance carbonation, resulting in superior mechanical strength and structural integrity compared to normal water. These findings emphasize the importance of optimizing additive contents and leveraging seawater chemistry to develop sustainable, high-performance iron-based binders with improved microstructural and mechanical properties.

Gear transmissions, due to demanding operating conditions, are particularly susceptible to wear. Surface fatigue wear (pitting) is among the most difficult to predict and, at the same time, the most critical forms of damage to the working surfaces of cylindrical gears, alongside scuffing. Pitting is classified as an unacceptable tribological degradation process leading to catastrophic wear, the propagation of which ultimately results in tooth fracture and consequently the failure of the entire gear system. For this reason, detecting them is an important task. This paper presented the algorithms for classifying pitting defects using deep learning networks. Classification was based on recorded images of defects. Three types of feature extractors (convolutional network, vision transformer, and hybrid model) used in the classifier were tested. A neural network and a vision language model were used as the classifier. The best accuracy of 86% was achieved for the vision transformer together with the neural network. The novel elements are a comparison of three types of feature extractors with respect to their application to the detection (classification) of gear tooth pitting damage and the use of a multimodal language model for the detection of gear tooth pitting damage.

Machine vision systems are advanced sets composed of electronic components, computer hardware and specialized software algorithms. They process and analyze images from the environment, supporting control, process automation and product inspection. Typical components include lighting, lenses, image sensors, vision processing units, and communication systems. In the food and agricultural industries, vision systems are increasingly used to identify fruit, recognizing and classifying them based on features such as color, shape, size and degree of ripeness. The research focused on programming vision systems for strawberry identification using the Python environment and OpenCV libraries. The DF Robot OpenMV Cam H7 inspection camera was used to assess the effectiveness of fruit identification and the correctness of determining their coordinates. Calibration and machine learning were performed on a set of fruits with different characteristics. The algorithm was configured to identify pixels with RGB values corresponding to the red color. The research included machine learning for object identification, analysis of the impact of light intensity, detection of objects of a specific color and assessment of the accuracy of reading fruit coordinates. The results showed that the system best identified red strawberries due to high contrast. Adjusting the camera exposure allows for preferential detection of more saturated colors.

Autorzy zaprojektowali wieloetapowy potok przetwarzania wstępnego obrazu, obejmujący m.in. posteryzację, wygładzanie gradientu, wzmocnienie krawędzi i eliminację pasmowania, co umożliwia poprawną identyfikację wzorców binarnych ArUco. Przeprowadzone testy wykazały poprawę skuteczności detekcji znaczników o około 26 % w porównaniu do standardowych podejść.

This article presents a system for detecting ArUco markers in thermal infrared (IR) images, designed to overcome the typical limitations of this imaging modality, such as low resolution, thermal noise, gradient banding, and the absence of distinct edges. Conventional fiducial marker detection algorithms, effective in RGB images, fail in IR environments due to the specific nature of thermal radiation. The author developed a multi-stage preprocessing pipeline including posterization, gradient smoothing, edge enhancement, and banding elimination, enabling accurate identification of binary ArUco patterns. Additionally, methods for estimating position and orientation in 3D space were implemented, along with adaptive binary thresholding with error tolerance tailored to thermal disturbances. The developed interactive system allows users to adjust image processing parameters in real time, significantly improving ArUco marker detection performance in varying environmental conditions. Tests conducted showed an approximately 26 % improvement in detection accuracy compared to standard approaches.

Due to the shape and material of composite helmets, ultrasonic thermography is the most effective method of detecting subsurface defects using non-destructive testing methods. This method was created by combining the ultrasonic method with infrared thermography. Ultrasonic waves flowing through the tested material cause vibrations at the edges of material discontinuities, which results in heat release. A thermal camera is used to locate places on the surface of the helmet with elevated temperature. Defects are located in these places. Since changes in temperature above defects often do not exceed the noise level, various methods of image processing (thermograms) are used to improve the effectiveness of detecting defects. The article presents the results of tests of composite helmets with intentionally introduced defects and helmets after many years of use. It also shows the possibilities of improving the results of defect detection using various image processing methods.

Department of Agricultural, Forest and Transport Machinery, University of Life Sciences in Lublin, Poland This study evaluates the process of detecting the degree of firmness and pH of rose apples with the help of image processing from the point of view of environmental effects. The process of this study started with image processing. In image processing, the selected samples were photographed with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera, and red (R), green (G), and blue (B) values were extracted with the image processing algorithm in MATLAB software. Next, the hardness and acidity values of the samples were extracted using laboratory steps. Next, with the inputs of each test, the life cycle assessment (LCA) list was prepared. Then, with the Impact 2002+ method, the list was subjected to life cycle evaluation, and the middle and final effects of the analyses were extracted. Next, the neural network and grey wolf optimizer (GWO) methods were used to predict environmental effects. Based on the results, it was determined that the values of R and G had the highest effect on estimating pH and the values of B and G had the highest effect on estimating the product’s hardness. Also, the results of evaluating the accuracy of the artificial neural network combined with the grey wolf optimizer showed that the accuracy of the estimation of environmental effects in the evaluation of pH was about 3–5% higher than that of soluble solid content (SSC). Based on the findings, using the integrated machine learning (ML) system with image processing is a reliable method to estimate the environmental effects of detecting the quality characteristics of Iranian rose apples entirely non-destructively.

A combined conjugate gradient algorithm is introduced for solving unconstrained optimization problems. In the suggested approach, the conjugate gradient parameter is defined as a combination of PRP (Polak-Ribiére-Polyak) and BRB (Rahali- Belloufi-Benzine) conjugate gradient parameters. To improve the convergence properties, we have adopted a new inexact line search technique that fits in with the suggested approach. The proposed line search technique can be useful for other gradient descent methods. We have established the existence of a step length that meets the new line search conditions. The generated descent direction and the convergence properties of the suggested approach are studied under the new line search conditions and the proposed method converges globally under mild assumptions. Our approach is evaluated on various test functions, and a comparison with similar recent algorithms is carried out. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is applied for restoring images with different noise levels.
