Content available remote Influence of Graphical Representation Type on Tessellated Geometry Classification
EN
This research investigates the impact of graphical representation on the accuracy of three-dimensional shape classification. 3D models, both scanned and modeled, are used in engineering, computer graphics and scientific data visualization. Various approaches are adopted in these fields to visually represent 3D geometry, utilizing solutions such as OpenGL and Direct3D, each with its distinct goal of achieving either real-time manipulation or photorealism. The purpose of this research was to determine the most effective graphical representation for categorizing mechanical components with a high degree of geometric similarity, such as beams and rods. The study examined various image representations and their combinations, obtained through the adjustment of rendering parameters and image compositing. In an effort to improve classification accuracy, novel techniques for addressing image recognition issues were developed and tested against commonly used image representation methods. This innovative approach proposed in the paper led to a 48% reduction in classification errors.

The author asks a basic question: how does the world of color work, and how does a continuous physical spectrum become a perceived hue. This perspective is then contrasted with digital practice, where colors are encoded discretely as RGB triplets and reproduced by displays that emit artificial light with device-specific spectral characteristics. The article examines whether a conversion from digital colors to a physical, wavelength-based description is possible, and whether such a conversion is meaningful. By considering metamerism, inter-device variability, viewing conditions, and observer-dependent perception, the author argues that assigning an RGB value to a single “true spectrum” is inherently non-unique and only weakly justified from a perceptual standpoint. A further conclusion is practical but important: even the finite RGB space is beyond direct human comprehension. Not all differences between RGB codes are perceptually discriminable, and even when they are, discrimination does not imply that people can reliably assign unique names to every visible difference. In effect, the infinite spectral domain is reduced to a finite set of digital RGB codes and then reduced again to an even smaller set of linguistic color categories. Building on this, the paper proposes heuristics that are sufficient for precise everyday use of color terminology, while acknowledging their heuristic nature: (1) an author-defined RGB color cube with vector-based region assignment for named colors, (2) quantitative sampling with a nearest labeled neighbor rule, and (3) data-driven classification on the sampled datasets, including supervised models and clustering methods.

This paper describes modified robust algorithms for a line clipping by a convex polygon in, E2 and a convex polyhedron in E3. The proposed algorithm is based on the Cyrus-Beck algorithm and uses homogeneous coordinates to increase the robustness of computation. The algorithm enables computation fully in the projective space using the homogeneous coordinates and the line can be given in the projective space, in general. If the result can remain in projective space, no division operation is needed. It supports the use of vector-vector operations, SSE/AVX instructions, and GPU.

Self-excited vibration is a significant constraint on productivity and production quality, which makes various forms of virtual machining widely used to find stable conditions before starting the actual machining operation. Numerical simulation of self-excited vibration, although much slower than analytical solutions, makes it possible to consider the nonlinearity of the process and its continuous variation. In 5-axis milling, predicting the instantaneous cross-sections of the uncut chip is very difficult, so geometric simulation is readily used to check the correctness of the NC program and the obtained shape of the workpiece. However, the known solutions take into consideration only programmed movements of the tool relative to the workpiece without considering vibrations, and those in which attempts have been made to consider vibrations have significant limitations. This paper uses a Geometric Simulator that determines the nominal positions of the tool relative to the workpiece, to which the displacements due to vibration, determined by the Dynamic Simulator, are added, making it possible to effectively determine the dynamic thickness of the cut layer and the trace on the workpiece material left by the vibrating tool. The use of geometric simulation, in which the material is represented by discrete voxels, introduces signal quantization, that is, the limited resolution of undeformed chip thickness and trace left on the machined surface. The paper presents the effect of voxel dimension on the accuracy of the simulation of self-excited vibrations.

The de facto standard for storing human motion data on a computer involves a representation based on Euler angles. This representation, while effective, has several short- comings. Triplets of Euler angles are not unique, and the same posture may be expressed using different combinations of angles. Furthermore, many possible Euler angle triplets correspond to unnatural positions for human joints. This means that, in general, a large part of the representational space remains unused. In this paper, we investigate a recently proposed representation inspired by molecular representations. It uses only two (instead of three) degrees of freedom per joint: a vector and a torsion angle. Using the two key ingredients of this new representation, we present a complete analysis of the Graphics Lab Motion Capture Database. The data found in this analysis provide us with some powerful insights about natural and unnatural human postures in human motions. These insights can potentially lead to possible constraints on human motions which may be used to more effectively solve open problems in the computer graphics community, most notably the problem of (human) motion adaptation.

Finite topological spaces and their dimensions have many applications in computer science, e.g., in digital topology, computer graphics and the analysis and synthesis of digital images. Georgiou et. al. [11] provided a polynomial algorithm for computing the covering dimension dim (X, 𝒯 ) of a finite topological space (X, 𝒯 ). In addition, they asked whether algorithms of the same complexity for computing the small inductive dimension ind (X, 𝒯 ) and the large inductive dimension Ind (X, 𝒯 ) can be developed. The first problem was solved in a previous paper [4]. Using results of the that paper, we also solve the second problem in this paper. We present a polynomial algorithm for Ind (X, 𝒯 ), so that there are now efficient algorithms for the three most important notions of a dimension in topology. Our solution reduces the computation of Ind (X, 𝒯 ), where the specialisation pre-order of (X, 𝒯 ) is taken as input, to the computation of the maximal height of a specific class of directed binary trees within the partially ordered set. For the latter an efficient algorithm is presented that is based on order- and graph-theoretic ideas. Also refinements and variants of the algorithm are discussed.

During archaeological excavations in Nowy Łowicz, Pomerania (Poland), in 1991, burial mound 55 with a woman’s grave was examined, in which numerous fragments of textiles, costume accessories and jewellery had been preserved. The work presents the results of structural and technological analysis of fragments preserved. Based on these, as well as on preserved iconography and analogous archaeological finds, an attempt was made to reconstruct the woman’s clothing from the period to which the grave is dated, i.e. phase B2/C1 of the Roman period. The reconstruction was made by means of computer graphics and includes three elements of clothing: a shirt, dress and short coat, made by identified techniques and partly taking into account the original colours. The work done is particularly important due to the fact that this is the first attempt to reconstruct a woman’s complete clothing worn on the territory of what is now Poland in the above-mentioned period.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki analizy strukturalnej i technologicznej zachowanych fragmentów tkanin. Rekonstrukcja została wykonana za pomocą grafiki komputerowej i obejmuje trzy elementy ubioru: koszulę, suknię i krótki płaszcz, wykonane w zidentyfikowanych technikach i częściowo z uwzględnieniem oryginalnych kolorów.

E-books are now an integral and increasingly autonomous segment of the publishing market, characterized by a wide variety of forms, techniques and functions – which is also reflected in their aesthetics. In practice, three general models of e-books are most common: a digitized book, an ebook as a variant version (to a printed edition) and the born-digital publications. Each of these forms is associated with a slightly different approach to graphic design. Regardless of the method of recording – traditional or digital – a well-designed book is one in which the content, the text and the graphic form constitute a coherent, harmoniously composed entirety, adapted to technological conditions and aimed at supporting the perception and reception of the content. Issues related to book aesthetics are essentially universal – many principles developed for the needs of traditional editing remain valid also in relation to electronic books. In the case of e-books, physiological determinants of reading processes are particularly important. The use of techniques and tools of computer graphics undoubtedly improves the processes related to the design of books – including electronic ones.

The development of computer graphics forces new requirements on the developers, which will make the virtual world more similar to the real world. One of these elements is the simulation of fog. Common fog algorithms mix the color of the scene with the color of the fog over a certain distance. However, one feature of the naturally foggy scenery is ignored. With the distance and density of the fog, the observed scenery or individual objects become more blurred. In this paper we will present our implementation of the distance fog in the Unreal Engine 4, including the effect of blurring the foggy areas, simulating of light scattering and variations in fog density using noise.
