Synergy is the interaction of several factors that achieve a better result collectively than individually. Similarly, introducing new, contemporary forms into historic fabric increases both functionality and perception of the object. Today, many approaches exist in designing within a historic context, yet they can be reduced to three main groups: reconstruction, introducing strongly contrasting new ele ments and applying stylistically related, though not historicizing, forms. This article focuses on the analysis of trends in contemporary architectural design within historic environments, the role of his torical and architectural research in the adaptation of heritage buildings, and the issue of accessibility of historic structures for people with special needs.

Purpose: This study explores the multifaceted diversity of Polish crafts, analyzing how various factors - such as professional scope, market adaptation, and material use - shape the sector. It examines how diversity manifests within craftsmanship, focusing on the evolving definitions of a craftsman, the internal heterogeneity of the craft sector, and the extent to which ethnic diversity is acknowledged in the promotion of Polish crafts. Design/methodology/approach: The research employs a qualitative approach, analyzing reports, book reviews, and online resources related to Polish craftsmanship. It examines different dimensions of diversity, including craft professions, business structures, skills, materials, and training opportunities, as well as the representation of ethnic and cultural diversity within institutional narratives. Findings: The study reveals that diversity in Polish crafts is primarily discussed in terms of professional and creative variety, technological integration, and market-driven adaptations. However, ethnic diversity remains largely absent from the discourse, with only minimal references found in institutional materials. While the craft sector demonstrates strong internal differentiation, there is limited acknowledgment of intercultural influences, suggesting an opportunity for further integration of cultural diversity in craft promotion and policy. Originality/value: This research provides new insights into the representation of diversity within Polish craftsmanship, highlighting the sector's broad scope while identifying gaps in the inclusion of ethnic and cultural dimensions. It underscores the need for a more comprehensive approach that integrates cultural diversity into the promotion and development of the craft sector.
Bazaars are fundamental to Iranian architecture, serving as hubs for social, economic, cultural, and religious activities. However, modernization and urban development have led to the decline of historic city centers, due to insufficient infrastructure, low security, improper accessibility, and unbalanced land prices. This study evaluates the factors influencing the revitalization of Dezful’s historic bazaar using a descriptive- analytical approach. Surveys and semi-structured interviews were conducted with various stakeholders. Data analysis employed entropy weighting, the Delphi method, t-tests, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and the TOPSIS technique. Results indicate that physical, economic, social, cultural, and religious factors significantly impact revitalization, with physical factors being the most influential and religious factors the least. Findings were validated through stakeholder discussions, considering urban planning policies, economic shifts, and government interventions.

Bazary stanowią fundamentalny element irańskiej architektury, pełniąc funkcję ośrodków życia społecznego, gospodarczego, kulturalnego i religijnego. W ramach pracy przeprowadzono ankiety i częściowo ustrukturyzowane wywiady z różnymi grupami interesariuszy.
Przytaczane przykłady nawiązują do projektów koncepcyjnych, konkursowych i poddawane zostaną wyłącznie analizie ideowej, estetycznej, nie wnikając w zagadnienia technologii rewaloryzacji historycznej.

Heritage buildings carry both material and immaterial values – historical, symbolic, and cultural. When properly revitalized, they can be given new functions, restoring their former glory or even transforming them into icons of their cities. However, the process of working with historic structures requires great sensitivity and discernment, and revitalization – long undervalued – is increasingly being seen as a creative challenge rather than merely a conservation routine. This article analyzes several examples of heritage adaptation and revitalization, differing in scale and design approach. It explores the delicate aspects of restoring original functions or assigning new ones to such objects, focusing solely on conceptual and aesthetic analysis of competition and conceptual projects, without delving into the technological aspects of historical revalorisation.

Despite Taiwan's active engagement with global heritage preservation standards since the 1964 Venice Charter and the implementation of various preservation concepts over the past fifty years, cultural heritage preservation in Taiwan faces persistent challenges. Historic buildings are demolished faster than preserved, while preservation professionals struggle to communicate the importance of preservation to the public, raising questions: "Why preserve, and for whom?" This research examines whether these challenges stem from a fundamental disconnect: Does traditional Chinese culture in Taiwan inherently lack a framework for cultural heritage preservation, or are current preservation concepts merely Western transplants failing to connect with local culture? Chinese cultural thinking was selected for analysis because it remains mainstream in Taiwan's multicultural environment. Some scholars, citing Liang Sicheng, argue Chinese culture developed a concept of "non-permanence of original materials" due to timber-frame construction allowing component replacement. Through systematic keyword analysis of pre-Qin classical literature in Academia Sinica's electronic database, this research discovers that traditional Chinese thinking contains a multi-layered view of preservation—integrated into daily life practices and seasonal rhythms rather than existing as professional intervention. This traditional approach combines practical maintenance with moral cultivation and governance, viewing preservation as part of natural cycles. By analyzing architectural elements, maintenance, and preservation concepts, this research provides new perspectives on cultural sustainability for Taiwan's heritage and bridges communication between preservation professionals and the public.

This paper considers authenticity at sites of Holocaust heritage through the eyes of the IHRA Charter for Safeguarding Sites, exploring the importance of authenticity for providing proof of the past and avoiding Holocaust denial and distortion. Drawing on a variety of case studies from across Europe, it examines authenticity in both physical reconstructions and restorations, as well as in the atmosphere at these sites. It concludes by asking whether arguing about the acceptability of inauthenticity and its limits is ultimately a distraction. The real problem today is Holocaust distortion, and elements at sites which contribute to that, and tell false narratives of past, are where heritage professionals at such sites should place their energies.

In recent years, the authority of heritage professionals has come under growing scrutiny, especially where heritage is instrumentalized for national identity, development, or tourism. In Pakistan, traditional conservation values often take a back seat to broader heritage goals. This paper examines how the authority of heritage experts is being reshaped and contested in such settings. Although ICOMOS charters promote value-based, expert-led conservation, the realities in developing countries like Pakistan reveal a more complex landscape. Heritage decisions are often driven by political actors, private agendas, and institutional interests, sidelining professional ethics and established principles. These conditions raise critical questions: Who defines heritage value, and how do professionals respond when ethics are compromised by economic imperatives? This study focuses on adaptive reuse and urban redevelopment projects in Karachi. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining semi-structured interviews with architects, developers, and officials, alongside field surveys and a critical review of doctrinal texts such as ICOMOS charters and relevant literature. Three types of cases are examined: façadism and symbolic preservation, politically driven restoration without expert consultation, and public–private regeneration projects prioritizing economic gains. Findings reveal a fragmented context where professional authority is often negotiated, bypassed, or reshaped to suit development-led heritage agendas. International standards are frequently cited but inconsistently applied, often to justify visibility, political narratives, or economic outcomes. The research concludes that heritage professionals in Pakistan operate under constrained agency, with their expertise contingent on adapting to competing demands. This signals the need to rethink how global conservation principles can be locally grounded and how professional authority might be reasserted or reimagined.

W Pakistanie tradycyjne wartości związane z ochroną dziedzictwa kulturowego często schodzą na dalszy plan w stosunku do szerszych celów związanych z dziedzictwem.
The article analyses the impact of mining traditions on the regional identity of Upper Silesia and addresses the issue ofprotecting the mining heritage in the face of industrial and social transformation. The authors point out that decades of miningindustryin Silesia have shaped a specific work ethos, habits and mores, which are currently at risk of disappearing as a result of the decarbonization process and the changingtheindustry structure. Specialattention is paid to both tangible and intangible aspects of heritage, such as souvenirs, decorative objects, medals, as well as the traditions of the cult of Saint Barbara. The role of miners as depositories of the memory of the profession and its symbolism is emphasized. Examples of good practice in heritage preservation include international projects, such as CoalHeritage, supporting the promotion of coalindustryheritage. The article emphasizes that the preservation of exhibits, documentation of their history and the relationships among themining families are crucial for consolidatingtheregional identity and transmitting the cultural values to future generations. The need for further actions to protect and popularize the unique mining heritage is also indicated.
The article presents the challenges faced during the renovation works completed in 2024 on the building of the former Zamość Academy in Zamość. It focuses not only on the work conducted on this specific historic monument but also on the unexpected findings and discoveries made during the construction and renovation process. Among these discoveries were 18th-century illusionistic wall paintings in the chapel and the Jan Kanty Hall, floors from various periods, the foundations of older buildings on which the walls of the current academy were erected, as well as 18th-century recessed latrines preserved with wooden seating elements and risers. The article also discusses how, in the 19th century, attempts were made to deal with the effects of high wall moisture and the heating system used in the earliest periods of the building's history. Additionally, it explores the circumstances of the discoveries, their impact on the construction process, their significance for the history of the building, the city, and the region, and how the renovation work, which exceeded the scope of the original construction project, influenced the overall renovation process.

The subject of the research presented in this paper are examples of Lviv villas in the years 1918–1939. Reflecting the characteristic stylistic features of European architecture and urbanism of the interwar period, these buildings have undergone various transformations between the end of the Second World War and the present. The beauty of this aspect of Lviv’s historical heritage has been threatened by the consequences of the city’s development policy, while war had become a direct threat to their very survival. This research constitutes a synthetic characterisation of the types of villa developments built in Lviv in the interwar period, emphasizing their features on an architectural and urban scale. At present the villas’ condition, ownership and use vary. Systemic protective measures covered by consistent legislation and conservation supervision are needed as is the continuation of multifaceted research to expand the archival database which forms the basis of projects planned for their renovation, modernisation or transformation.
The subject of the research is the restoration of historic window frames in public and residential buildings in Poland. The considerations are based on examples of wooden windows, the preservation of which is the basis when carrying out conservation work. The paper presents a summary of methods for examining the existing condition of the windows, which precede the renovation process. It also points out the important role of the restoration of window joinery in terms of its total environmental impact. When properly repaired and upgraded, old windows can usually be brought to a condition comparable to new windows, and this approach is sustainable on many levels. The paper answers the question of why, how and to what extent it is worth renovating original preserved windows. The aim of the paper is to point out the right direction to take when practicing refurbishment of historic windows and to formulate guidelines as a starting point for detailed considerations.

The author's reflections are based on her experience when working as the Regional Conservator of Historic Monuments in the Małopolska Region. Selected provisions of the Act on the Protection and Care of Historic Monuments will be juxtaposed with actual cases of historic buildings, in order to illustrate how the protection system works in practice. The conclusions will indicate courses of action which, often going beyond the Act, show that certain areas of activity within which we transform our surroundings are slipping away out of the constitutional - and universal - duty to uphold our heritage. Also, the conclusions will specify the things that need to be addressed in the protection system, as its emphasis has been overly shifted to antagonisms instead of cooperation.
This work aims to publish the dry stone heritage of the Barrocal region, Algarve, southern mainland Portugal. Throughout this work, it was discovered that these buildings are, for the most part, in ruins. Their rehabilitation and dissemination would be possible because they have a great cultural value and a sense of belonging to these places, among the population that still lives in this region. The methodology for carrying out this work was based on four phases: 1) contextualization of studies developed in Portugal; 2) identification and classification of dry stone constructions, according to their use and typology; 3) registration and analysis of these constructions with the aim of obtaining constructive and geometric data; 4) proposals for conservation and promotion, both of construction techniques and buildings. This survey is original, as it has not yet been carried out from this point of view. There is some work on dry stone, but mainly focused on walls. The fact that this heritage is not valued and has lost its usefulness means that it is at serious risk of disappearing. With better knowledge of this type of heritage, it is possible to make people value it and develop strategies to promote it, thus managing to maintain it. Through the dissemination of this work, it is hoped that this type of heritage will be valued and preserved. In practice, with the Algarve being the most touristic area in Portugal, the reuse or definition of new functions of this heritage can be an added value for tourist activity.

BIM and GIS technologies are used in both planning and investment and construction processes. GIS is more often used in the former, where one operates on a macro scale and information about the environment is essential for decision-making. BIM, on the other hand, is increasingly implemented in investment and construction processes (micro scale). The BIM model as a resource of knowledge and information about the construction object is the basis for decision-making, while data from GIS systems are necessary to obtain reliable information about the environment and the prevailing spatial, social or economic conditions. The basic information from GIS systems are attributes related to geographic location (coordinate system, angle to true north, elevation ordinate). Unfortunately, both technologies use different programming paradigms. GIS is mainly a relational database based on multidimensional tables, while BIM uses so-called encapsulation, polyform, hierarchy or instantiation, which enrich semantically stored data. There are many benefits to integrating geospatial data with building object information. The problem of compatibility and interoperability of the two technologies is the subject of many considerations of basic science and the problem of practitioners during application work. Georeferencing of BIM models is conferred in several ways, however, most of them require relatively expensive commercial tools or extensive digital skills or even programming. Rarely, however, are tools such as FME used for data conversion, management and visualization. Thus, the purpose of the present work was to attempt to properly georeference a BIM model of a historic building, located at Constitution Square in Warsaw, in a GIS environment, and then convert the data to shapefile output format using FME software. The results of the experimental work indicate that the BIM data can be embedded quite accurately in the space of a given coordinate system and displayed against various contextual data, but the 3D geometry itself loses its detail and quality. The paper discusses the limitations of the procedure and future research directions.
The article refers to the problem of adaptation of post-fortress objects from the 19th century located in the strict urban tissue in Poland. The authors of the text analyse the example of adaptation of Fort VIII Służew in Warsaw as a way of making common spaces in housing estates more attractive. The rapid demilitarisation of fortresses from this period caused by the development of the art of war and the subsequent dynamic development of urban planning after the Second World War resulted in the degradation and disappearance of these valuable monuments. The Russian ring fortress of Warsaw is now entirely within the urban fabric. Introducing additions and new utility functions is becoming a way of protecting the existing stock of often degraded spaces left behind by former forts. On the example of Fort VIII Służew, a number of activities related to adaptation, revitalisation and revalorization of the existing urbanised residential space in Ursynów district are presented. The analysed object together with its surroundings is an example of a way to use post-fortress spaces for both utilitarian and cognitive purposes while respecting historic values. Age-old fortifications, so well preserved in Poland, significantly define and shape urban layouts. The research carried out by the authors of this text shows that appropriate use of the potential of post-fortress buildings from the 19th century can significantly improve the quality and character of colonial buildings and highlight the values associated with this type of specific monument.
