Adaptation student halls of residence as temporary homes for displaced: the case of the Lodz University of Technology

The authors addressed the issue of adapting selected Lodz University of Technology dormitories to serve as temporary residences for both university students and refugees from Ukraine with individual needs. This study aimed to determine whether the analysed buildings, which play an essential role in the organizational and functional structure of the academic community, are prepared for situations such as the urgent need to provide housing for people in a crisis. Furthermore, the article seeks to ascertain whether the initiatives undertaken as part of grant projects financed by the European Social Fund to enhance the existing approach to conducting architectural audits could potentially contribute to the formulation of a rational spatial policy by Polish municipal governments. It should be acknowledged that these municipalities have a significant role to play in the reception of refugees. They provide accommodation for longer-term stays in public and private buildings, which may have an impact on not only population density but also its cultural dimension.

Artykuł omawia problem zapewnienia zamieszkania tymczasowego dla rodzin, które utraciły swoje domy w wyniku powodzi. Przedstawiono możliwości wykorzystania systemów domów modułowych zarówno w przypadku indywidualnych mieszkań – po kompleksy wielomodułowe organizowane dla powodzian przez jednostki samorządu terytorialnego. Przenalizowano możliwości zastosowania różnych typów domów modułowych pod względem kryterium czasu budowy, możliwości transportu elementów prefabrykowanych i trudności montażu. Wskazano na warunki techniczne, jakie powinny spełniać domy modułowe jako tymczasowe jednostki mieszkalne w okresie usuwania skutków powodzi.

The article discusses the problem of providing temporary housing for families who lost their homes as a result of flooding. The possibilities of using modular house systems were presented, both in the case of individual apartments and multimodule complexes organized for flood victims by local government units. The possibilities of using different types of modular houses were analyzed in terms of construction time, the possibility of transporting prefabricated elements and the difficulty of assembly. The technical conditions that should be met by modular houses as temporary housing units during the period of removing the effects of flooding were indicated.

Od grupy domów do miasta – ważny jest układ skupienia. Próby są różne. Interesujące jest studiowanie przykładu, który sprawdził się w czasie, a był różny w skali i treści: olimpiady, i sposób, ukryty lecz stymulujący, w jaki stopniowo „budowano” ich „wioski”, przez ponad stulecie. Można obserwować niezwykłe, wymyślone sposoby utworzenia „tymczasowego mieszkania” – czym jest wioska olimpijska. Sugestia potrzebnych cnót.

From a group of houses to a city, what matters is the aggregation system. Attempts are many. It’s very interesting to study an example that produced good results over time, different in scale and contents: the Olympic Games, and the way, almost hidden, but stimulating, with which they gradually “built” their “Villages”, over more than a century. You can observe the extraordinary ways that people and cities have invented, to create the kind of “temporary housing” that is the Olympic Village. A suggestion on the needed virtues.
