Nowa Huta – today's district of Krakow – was founded in 1949 as a worker-socialist rival to the intelligentsia of Krakow. It was designed as an ideal city, implementing the program and "spirit" of a socialist community. Designed as a space for 100,000 inhabitants, it now boasts 300,000 inhabitants. Initially, its architecture was dominated by a socialist realism, but in the subsequent decades, modernism entered the scene, followed by postmodernism in 1980s, . Here, for over 76 years, architects tested various urban and stylistic concepts. In 2004, as an exceptional example of de velopment and transformation, its urban layout was listed in the Register of Historic Monuments, and in 2019, Nowa Huta was declared a legally protected Cultural Park.

XX wieku postmodernizm.
The portrayal of the city in art has evolved over the centuries, reflecting social, artistic, and philosophical trans formations. The aim of this article is to trace these changes by analyzing the depiction of city fragments in paintings from various eras. The research method employed consists of analyzing three main elements: ico nography, semiotics, and spatial analysis. These approaches facilitate an understanding of how artists depict ed the city, its hierarchy, dynamics, and the relationships between its individual components. The city is exam ined as a space with diverse symbolic meanings sacrum, profanum, utopia, and dystopia. It can be a spiritual space, as in the case of Jerusalem or Rome in religious art; an everyday reality with its streets, squares, and marketplaces; an ideal city expressing harmony and order, as seen in Renaissance urban planning; or a space characterized by chaos, destruction, and dehumanization, as depicted in works associated with indus trialization and modernism. The article also analyzes the evolution of the city's silhouette: from the enclosed walls of medieval towns to the skyscraper-dominated skylines of 21st-century metropolises. Furthermore, selected paintings from different epochs are presented to demonstrate how the imagery of cities transformed in response to prevailing ideas and values. The conclusions indicate that the representation of cities in art serves as a mirror reflecting shifts in the understanding of both urban space and human experience.

The article continues research on the transformations of Wrocław’s medieval quarters, focusing on the southeastern area of the chartered city, which was initially linked to the pre-charter route leading to Ostrów Tumski. The historical and morphological analysis reveals the complexity of the evolution of the built environment, where gradual changes were interrupted by sudden transformations resulting from the development of fortifications, secularization, wartime destruction, and post war reconstruction. The strategic location of the area in question of the area between Święta Katarzyna, Klemensa Janickiego, Jana Ewangelisty Purkyniego Streets and Dominikański Square, at the intersection of trade routes, fortification boundaries, and river crossings, played a crucial role in shaping its specific structure and function. The article aims to present this quarter as an urban unit whose transformations reflect the dynamics of the city’s development and its cultural conditions.

The development of civil society is closely linked to the increasing participation of local communities in decision-making processes related to city planning. That requires urban planners to possess a broader knowledge of the tools and forms of public participation, as well as increasingly refined skills in negotiating, resolving conflicts, and creatively collaborating with all stakeholders in developing development visions and planning procedures. This article presents a comparative analysis of the teaching process in the form of a student charrette workshop conducted in Tykocin (during the 2024/25 academic year by students of the Faculty of Architecture, Warsaw University of Technology, participating in the master's specialization called: “Architecture and Urbanism – Livable City") with professional methodology for conducting participatory charrette workshops. The publication aimed to examine and determine the extent to which the student adaptation retains key elements of the original method and can be considered a simulation thereof. The authors outline the potential benefits of this form of education for both students and local governments and consider whether the educational process facilitates the organization of professional workshops.

Patronage estates, which once played an extremely important role, are now often degraded areas as a result of political changes. Their history, however, is extremely interesting and provides a wealth of information on urban planning and architecture. Their history records stylistic trends and material possibilities depending on the time of construction. Using the example of the development of post-industrial areas, we can make broader observations. A key question, however, remains the future of brownfield sites. Their revitalisation or new development (in the case of the demolition of historic fabric) will reflect changes in worldviews over time, as well as attitudes to these sites and their role in the process of shaping the region’s contemporary architecture.
Pierwsza część artykułu poświęconego przemianom architektoniczno-urbanistycznym średniowiecznego kwartału kościoła św. Elżbiety na wrocławskim Starym Mieście przedstawia proces sanacji tej przestrzeni i próbę przekształcenia zamkniętych dziedzińców kościelnych w nowoczesną ulicę (udana) i nowoczesny plac miejski (bez sukcesu) od lat 30. XIX w. do I wojny światowej. Dzieje te ukazano w szerszym kontekście dostosowywania centrum Wrocławia do wyzwań nowoczesności.

This article's first section, devoted to the architectural and urban transformations of the medieval block surrounding the Church of St. Elizabeth in Wrocław’s Old Town, presents the spatial reconfiguration between the 1830s and the First World War. It traces the efforts to modernize the church’s enclosed courtyards— achieved through the creation of a new street—and the attempt to establish a city square. These developments are examined within the broader context of Wrocław’s adaptation to the challenges of modern urbanism in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Dąbie, wieś o średniowiecznym rodowodzie, zostało włączone w granice Krakowa w 1911 r. Mimo bogatej przeszłości i licznych przemian przestrzennych obszar ten pozostaje słabo rozpoznany badawczo. Szczególnie intensywne przekształcenia urbanistyczne w XIX i XX w. doprowadziły do niemal całkowitego zatarcia pierwotnego układu wsi.

Dąbie, a village of medieval origin, was incorporated into Cracow in 1911. Despite a rich past and numerous spatial transformations, this area remains poorly researched. Over the centuries, Dąbie has changed its administrative affiliation, and its development has been shaped by political and economic factors. Particularly intensive urban transformations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries led to an almost complete erasure of the village’s original layout. To date, this district has not been the subject of a comprehensive study of its spatial development. Previous mentions appeared only in the wider context of urban change in Cracow, among others, in reference to greenery planning, the preservation of historical fortifications, or the proposal for Greater Cracow. Due to its peripherality, Dąbie was not treated as an important area of the city, which also influenced the limited interest of researchers.

At the beginning of the 20 th century, many Polish cities modernised their main market squares. The new squares did not meet the expectations of residents – urban greenery was removed and replaced with empty concrete spaces. In 2025, two towns in the Podkarpacie region – Dębica and Ropczyce – embarked on plans to redesign their town centres, using a different approach to the design process. The aim of this article is to examine contemporary trends in the design of public spaces and to assess their quality on the basis of planned investments in these towns. A comparison of design processes and concepts has made it possible to identify the leading trends in public space planning. The results show that there is a strong need to bring greenery back to cities and to provide places for social integration. The qualitative assessment of the projects may guide further actions in other cities in the region.
XX wieku w kontekście koncepcji europejskiej i polskiej urbanistyki pierwszej tercji XX wieku. Przeanalizowano projekty urbanistyczne rozwoju historycznego centrum miasta.

During the interwar period (1921–1939) the largest cities of the voivodeship of Volyn of the 2nd Polish Republic—Równe and Łuck—became subjects for the implementation of modern urban concepts as well as the reconstruction and development of the municipal environment that evolved of pervious centuries. The objective of the article is an analysis of the spatial planning development designs of the cities of Równe and Łuck in the 1920s and 30s in the context of theories of European and Polish urban planning in the first third of the 20th century. Common scientific empirical research methods were applied over the course of work: archival investigations of primary sources, comparative methods, and historical–genetic and structural–compositional analysis. The article analyzes the specifics of the shaping of the design concepts for the examined cities. Key for Równe was the resolution of the 1936 architectural competition for an overall design for the city. The winning entries indicated an active implementation of the concept of urban functionalism as the basis for spatial transformations—i.e. the application of modern pre–design analyses as preceding the planning of built–up tissue; the ordering of the spatial structure of the city by zoning in line with function; the design of new housing districts on the basis of dispersion as well as spatial coupling (the “garden–city” model); the shaping of recreational infrastructure, including a cohesive system of green areas and parks; the integration of a transportation system taking into account the growing importance of the automobile and railroads. The shaping of the plan’s concept for the building of Łuck took place taking into account the role of the natural landscape, especially the valley of the Styr River, in the spatial structure of the city. Urban development designs of the historical center of the city were analyzed. What is visible in the development of the master plans for the two cities is the impact of the Warsaw school of urban planning on the modernization and the gradual shift from fragmentary planning to a comprehensive development of municipal space. The idea of functional urban planning found in the master plans of Równe and Łuck was never realized for economic reasons as well as due to the changed historical situation, the outbreak of World War II. Nevertheless, it is these documents that became the design–methodological basis for the spatial and planning development of the city in the postwar period.

Oprócz gotowych, łatwo powielanych rozwiązań autorzy zaprezentowali proces odkrywania lokalnych uwarunkowań w celu rozwiązania istniejących problemów, a przede wszystkim możliwie najlepszego wykorzystania potencjału miejsca.
This article examines the origins of Warsaw’s industrial-port district in Żerań between 1916 and 1939, presenting it as the culmination of a long-term urban development process rather than merely the outcome of postwar industrialization. The author traces the transformation of Warsaw’s spatial structure since the partitions, emphasizing the significance of planning and transportation decisions, such as the expansion of the city limits in 1916, the development of the railway network, and canal projects. Particular attention is given to the 1923 Regulatory Plan and the 1931 General Plan, which designated the right bank of the Vistula River for heavy industry. This concept of ‘dynamic development’ envisioned the concentration of industry in the Żerań area due to favorable logistical conditions (railway, planned port, canals). The article also analyzes the impact of state policy, new regulations, city planning initiatives, and pressure from urban planning circles. The district’s development is described within the broader context of regional planning (the ‘Functional Warsaw’ concept), culminating in the 1937 decision to construct a power plant in Żerań - a project that was never realized before the outbreak of war. The author illustrates the complexity of the urbanization process, shaped by the interplay of social, economic, and ideological factors.

In the history of urban planning, Le Corbusier's visions of a modern city, subordinated to function and order, are known. The aim of the article is to discuss the contemporary problems of large urban developments based on these ideas. The article uses a case study and the observational method. The problem was identified and analyzed on the example of New Belgrade - built on a clean area. One of the selection criteria was that it is a little-known project in the world, made on such a large scale and also one of the most faithful examples of the application of Le Corbusier's theory in practice. The results focus on the fact that the ambitious and innovative project revealed flaws in practice: too large spaces divided by roads, lack of human scale, lack of urban continuity, lack of a clear center and blurring of social relations. It is difficult to move around in a huge, scattered area without a car. Large green spaces are neglected and socially inactive. The conclusions indicate the need to densify the spaces of modernist urban tissues and to design focused on pedestrian traffic as the basic form of movement.
The design of responsive structures has evolved significantly, establishing itself as an interdisciplinary field characterized by a fully customized ideation process. In order to streamline and unify this process, a novel method for modeling the behavior of rod-like responsive structures using an evolutionary algorithm is introduced. The proposed mathematical framework leverages key geometric and physical parameters to control the generative process, enabling adaptability and fluidity in form development. By employing an evolutionary algorithm, the method offers an alternative to conventional rigid and repetitive morphing models, providing flexibility and innovation in responsive design outcomes. The model developed supports independent learning and fosters originality in solutions at both architectural and urban scales. Moreover, the presented methodology serves as the foundation upon which the authors developed the model, enabling its application across a wide spectrum of responsive structures for users. This paper addresses challenges in spatial modeling, behavioral algorithms, and the implementation of responsive architecture, presenting the authors’ innovative model for rod-like responsive structures alongside performance analysis. The methodology demonstrates promising results in terms of adaptability and efficiency, with potential for further refinement to enhance speed and output quality. The study also describes challenges and risks for further development of responsive models implementation.
Następnie przyporządkowane konkretnym zdarzeniom akustycznym oznaczenia numeryczne naniesiono na mapę badanego fragmentu miasta celem weryfikacji znaczenia audialnych i wizualnych czynników percepcyjnych w odbiorze przestrzeni miejskiej.

Acoustic images of the city – morphological analysis of selected components of the soundscape of Białystok. The biotic and abiotic components of a city's spatial layout create a dynamic system that affects the viewer in a multisensory way. Despite this, approaches in urban planning theory are mainly based on methods that analyze the visual aspects of urban structure, downplaying other sensory factors and their impact on residents' lives. This article attempts to identify and describe the correlation between elements of the acoustic landscape and parts of the urban composition, using a fragment of the urban fabric of Białystok as an example. Using a method developed by M. Siestrzewitowska, aimed at identifying the auditory equivalents of concepts previously formulated by K. Lynch and K. Wejchert, the authors identified important urban components, from which sounds were then collected. The collected samples were classified according to the categorization of urban sounds proposed by L. M. Aiello and his team. Next, numerical designations assigned to specific acoustic events were marked on a map of the studied part of the city in order to verify the significance of auditory and visual perceptual factors in the perception of urban space. The results of the study showed a lack of complete morphological consistency between the acoustic and spatial layers of the area's structure. In several cases, clear discrepancies were also observed, allowing the visual image to be supplemented with important sound components. Although the results obtained are based on a small research sample, they indicate the need to implement tools developed through multisensory analysis of landscape components in the urban planning and design process.

The symbiosis and synergy of the activities of city users are crucial for the quality of the urban system. Particularly important for the functioning of the city is the symbiosis and synergy of use of urban places in the central areas of the city. For the efficient studying and planning of urban structures, it is required and necessary to develop objective methods of measuring the parameters of this structure, especially in the aspect of assessing the connections between the elements of this structure, and, above all, urban places and their uses. One of the critical issues is the development of tools and measures to study the level of symbiosis and synergy, especially for central urban areas. This article proposes a method of assessing the level and the intensity of symbiosis and synergy in central areas using the Sym_Syn method, which can be used to examine both the existing state of the urban structure and to plan directions for the improvement of this structure, if the study of the existing state indicates significant deficiencies in the occurrence of symbiosis and synergy of uses of urban places.
