Sustainability and tourism have had a long-standing relationship. Tourism as an industry has shifted towards making sustainable choices and implementing policies to align with the Sustainable Development Goals. However, this relationship has layers of complexities and is paradoxical in nature. Practising one within the other is a difficult task, as tourism, primarily, is driven by consumption and economic prosperity, sustainability propagates production, inclusivity and restraint for a better future. This paper discusses the nuanced relationship that sustainability and its three key tenets, namely economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection, share with tourism. It proposes a framework of measures to materialise sustainable development goals within the tourism industry in real time and practice and cites examples of such implementations from across the globe. In assessing the dynamism between sustainability and tourism, this paper highlights the need to strike a balance between the two and the significance of newer forms of tourism models, such as regenerative tourism, communityled initiatives, and sustainable practices, which can lead to an equitable and just future

Zrównoważony rozwój i turystyka mają długą historię.

Artificial intelligence (AI) represents a significant challenge for the future of sustainable tourism business, its use being surrounded by many controversies. The research problem focuses on the application of AI in tourism enterprises in accordance with the concept of sustainable tourism. The aim of the research is to diagnose the strengths and weaknesses of AI applications in the sustainable tourism business and to propose radical innovations that may arise from the AI implementation. The optimal research methods, tools, and sample were selected during the preparatory phase of the study, which employed the method of logical sequences. The optimal research sample comprised students meeting specific selection criteria. The main research phase was conducted using a qualitative method –brainstorming sessions – yielding results for specific sectors within tourism: travel agencies, accommodation facilities and passenger transport companies. To compare the results with the market realities, pilot studies were conducted. We examined 20 hotels in the field of innovative practices, based on a diagnostic survey methodology. As a result, we generated numerous ideas for applying AI to the tourism industry, some of them radical in nature. Numerous risks were also identified, particularly those related to unethical behaviour. Comparing the results of both studies, we note the discrepancy between the number of possible AI applications in the tourism industry and the actual implementations in practice, to the detriment of the latter (implemented chatbot and intelligent energy management systems). This article is conceptual, and the research results contribute to the academic field of management and economic sciences.

Sztuczna inteligencja (AI) stanowi istotne wyzwanie dla przyszłości zrównoważonego biznesu turystycznego, a jej wykorzystanie budzi wiele kontrowersji. Problemem badawczym jest jej wykorzystanie w działalności przedsiębiorstw turystycznych. Celem prezentowanych dociekań badawczych jest zdiagnozowania mocnych i słabych stron zastosowania sztucznej inteligencji w biznesie turystycznym. Wyboru optymalnych metod i narzędzi oraz próby badawczej dokonano na pierwszym, przygotowawczym etapie badań, gdzie zastosowano metodę ciągów myślowych. Za optymalną próbę badawczą uznano studentów, którzy spełniają ustalone kryteria wyboru. Natomiast badania właściwe badania przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem metody jakościowej – burzy mózgów, uzyskując rezultaty dla każdej z wyszczególnionych branż turystycznych, a mianowicie: biur podróży, obiektów noclegowych i przedsiębiorstw transportu pasażerskiego.

Tourism activity as a form of leisure time management influences the level and quality of life. This study presents the process of assessing the preferences of students when choosing a health resort as a travel destination, taking into account the six criteria they identified as influencing their decision. The pairwise comparison method was applied, using matrix calculus to determine the weights of each criterion, such as costs, tourist attractions, popularity of the health resort, treatment offer, accessibility and specific climatic conditions. The research indicates that for the respondents, the most important factor in their choice is the climate of the health resort, which promotes active tourism. Another important element is the availability of treatment services, which plays a significant role in evaluating the attractiveness of health resorts. The study highlights the need to consider sustainable development principles in the context of infrastructure, environmental protection and access to services. The analysis of the results points to the importance of adjusting the health resort offer to the needs of young people who prefer active tourism and seek to benefit from natural health and environmental resources, while also ensuring care for the environment and local communities.

This article analyses the evolution of sustainable community-based ecotourism (CBET) in the Cu De River Valley, Central Vietnam, through the analytical lens of the Community Capitals Framework (CCF). Building on earlier theoretical work (Restrepo Rico & Peterek, 2024) and five years of participatory, longitudinal research (2019–2024), the study examines how transformations in natural, cultural, human, social, financial and built capitals have shaped the transition from resource-dependent livelihoods to a diversified ecotourism economy in the Hoa Bac Commune. The findings show that sustainable development emerged not from isolated interventions but from the cumulative and interacting effects of conservation initiatives, cultural revitalisation, skills development, cooperative governance, decentralised infrastructure and income diversification. The article demonstrates that the CCF provides a robust structure for analysing multi-capital transformation processes, and it argues that its application to tourism contexts benefits from integrating considerations of governance dynamics and environmental thresholds. The conclusions offer insights for designing governance, capacity development and implementation frameworks that strengthen the resilience and long-term sustainability of community-based tourism initiatives in rural settings.

Faro being a seaside city, the tide mills are part of its rich heritage. Located on the shores of the Ria Formosa, between mainland and sea, these mills have a potential tourist and cultural interest that is still unexploited. Taking part in the predominantly Mediterranean climate of Faro, along with tourism being one of the major engines of the region’s economy, proposals to create pedestrian routes are generally welcome. Thus, the objective of this article is to draw attention to a type of heritage that is at high risk of disappearing, developing a pedestrian path in the city of Faro, so that by integrating this heritage into a tourism and sustainable activity, it can be protected and disclosed. This research was based on bibliographic, webgraphic and field surveys. Throughout the development of the research for this work, the locations of several tide mills were identified, most of them in ruins, some disappeared completely only knowing their approximate location, or their function was changed, making use, in this case, of the existing infrastructures. In the Algarve, the region of which Faro is the capital, and in the city itself, the vernacular heritage is systematically ignored, either by ignorance or, for being a "minor" heritage, it is simply insignificant to the eyes of experts and to the general population, who do little to protect it. However, tide mills are part of the collective memory of the region and the city of Faro in particular, so it is important to draw attention to these heritage elements and, in this case, tourism can be a driving force.

This study investigates how to enhance creative tourism in Lampang, Thailand. The research integrates SWOT analysis and the TOWS matrix, using the horse carriage tradition as a case study. A qualitative methodology was employed, incorporating secondary data and fieldwork from May 2024 to October 2024. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, focus groups, workshops, and participatory observation involving 10 key opinion leaders from diverse stakeholder groups. The SWOT analysis revealed robust historical continuity, significant organisational capacity, and high operational expertise as key internal strengths. Conversely, challenges such as an ageing workforce and the risk of knowledge loss were identified as critical internal weaknesses. In addition, the analysis elucidated a range of external opportunities and threats that further contextualise the strategic environment. These findings contributed to developing a TOWS matrix, which resulted in eight actionable strategic recommendations: Utilising heritage for branding and marketing, educational expansion, enhancing tourist experience through safety and education, maintenance and sustainability initiatives, youth engagement and workforce development, lowering costs for residents, knowledge preservation and documentation, and improving compliance and regulation, respectively. The integrated heritage branding approach demonstrates that aligning traditional cultural assets with modern strategic frameworks facilitates sustainable tourism development. This study contributes to the literature by providing a replicable model for balancing cultural preservation with economic growth in creative tourism.

As people seek novel and engaging experiences during their leisure time, places of worship and religious sites emerge as popular tourist destinations. In Poland, Częstochowa stands out as one such revered location, home to the Black Madonna Monastery. Annually, approximately 4 million tourists flock to this sanctuary, with many opting for pilgrimages on foot. While visiting Częstochowa, tourists rely on well-prepared infrastructure to facilitate their stay. However, some residents, particularly those living near the sanctuary, express grievances regarding the inconveniences caused by the influx of tourists. Achieving a harmonious balance between the needs of tourists and those of the residents is imperative. While tourists contribute significantly to the city's revenue, residents strive to maintain a semblance of normalcy amidst the tourist influx. Therefore, analyzing residents' perspectives is crucial to identify areas needing improvement concerning pilgrimage-related activities and to gauge resident satisfaction levels. This paper aims to assess the impact of tourism services on the development of Częstochowa and the daily lives of its residents. Conducted through direct interviews with Częstochowa residents, the research employed the Critical Incident Technique (CIT), typically used for evaluating service quality. This method not only facilitated the organization of obtained data but also highlighted areas needing enhancement. Following the direct interviews, the analysis phase commenced, wherein critical incidents were identified, categorized into positive and negative incidents, and further grouped accordingly. Subsequently, a matrix classifying critical incidents was constructed to identify particularly impactful incidents and those causing significant resident dissatisfaction. The research findings were then presented to city authorities to pinpoint areas for potential improvement as identified by residents. These recommendations aim to not only foster the city's development but also enhance residents' quality of life. Such initiatives constitute significant strides towards fostering sustainable tourism in Częstochowa.

This study evaluates landslide risks in the Bau Trang Lake area, Vietnam, by integrating field data, geospatial analysis, and geotechnical modeling. Bau Trang Lake, a critical ecological and economic site, faces increasing landslide threats driven by hydrogeological dynamics and human activities, particularly unregulated tourism. Using seven thematic maps - geology, topography, slope, soil properties, water permeability, mechanical strength, and land use impacts – this research develops a hazard map categorizing the area into five risk levels: very low, low, medium, high, and very high. High-risk zones, concentrated along the southern and southwestern shores of Bau Ba, are characterized by steep slopes, loose sandy soils, and high water permeability, exacerbated by seasonal rainfall and humaninduced soil compaction. The findings highlight the ecological and economic significance of high-risk zones, which include key tourism destinations. To mitigate risks, the study recommends structural solutions like retaining walls and geotextiles, alongside non-structural measures such as reforestation, zoning regulations, and stakeholder engagement. These strategies aim to balance tourism development with environmental conservation, ensuring long-term sustainability. This research provides a replicable framework for landslide risk assessment and offers actionable solutions to support resilience in environmentally sensitive regions.

Niniejsze badanie ocenia ryzyko osuwisk na obszarze jeziora Bau Trang w Wietnamie, integrując dane terenowe, analizę geoprzestrzenną i modelowanie geotechniczne. Jezioro Bau Trang, krytyczny obszar ekologiczny i gospodarczy, stoi w obliczu rosnącego zagrożenia osuwiskami spowodowanego dynamiką hydrogeologiczną i działalnością człowieka, w szczególności nieuregulowaną turystyką. Korzystając z siedmiu map tematycznych - geologii, topografii, nachylenia, właściwości gleby, przepuszczalności wody, wytrzymałości mechanicznej i wpływu użytkowania gruntów – w ramach tych badań opracowano mapę zagrożeń kategoryzującą obszar na pięć poziomów ryzyka: bardzo niski, niski, średni, wysoki i bardzo wysoki. Strefy wysokiego ryzyka, skoncentrowane wzdłuż południowego i południowo-zachodniego brzegu Bau Ba, charakteryzują się stromymi zboczami, luźnymi piaszczystymi glebami i wysoką przepuszczalnością wody, pogarszaną przez sezonowe opady deszczu i zagęszczanie gleby spowodowane przez człowieka. Wyniki badania podkreślają ekologiczne i gospodarcze znaczenie stref wysokiego ryzyka, które obejmują kluczowe ośrodki turystyczne.

This study aimed to explore the diversity of natural landscapes, faunae, florae, and touristic infrastructures in Taza province and their attractiveness to visitors. Equally, visitors and local populations were interviewed on the socioeconomic activities in the study area. Field visits were realized to delimit the ecosystems, road network, and infrastructures in Taza province. Transects were used to collect faunae and florae data, while a questionnaire was used to collect demographic features and socioeconomic activities in Tazekka National Park. The obtained results showed a high diversity of ecosystems, including forests, steppes, farmlands, and aquatic systems. The documented faunae and florae were diverse with 86 avian species and 16 mammalian species. Two birds Carduelis carduelis and Streptopelia turtur arenicola were classified as vulnerable, while Neophron percnopterus was classified as an endangered species. Two mammals Macaca sylvanus and Cervus elaphus barbarus were endangered. The road network was advanced with four types of roads (highway, national, regional, and provincial) and hotel infrastructures (hotels, restaurants, diesel stations) were diverse and well distributed in each corner of the area. The availability of natural resources and well-developed infrastructures are suggested to support sustainable activities, such as ecotourism, which are expected to add income to local populations. In fact, field interviews showed that the area, principally Tazekka National Park was visited by national and international tourists, which creates jobs for local residents. Equally, many other activities such as agriculture, pastoralism, transportation, and commerce were recorded among the inhabitants. Therefore, more advanced research is needed to characterize new ecosystems that deserve tourist visits as well as how to balance between human activities and the sustainability of natural resources.

Marinas are of key importance in the development of sustainable marine tourism, whereas requirements posed by certification organizations can have a motivating effect and contribute to the implementation of environmentally and socially friendly solutions. The aim of this study is to analyze two world-leading marina categorization systems: the Gold Anchor Scheme and the IMCI Blue Star Marina Certification System. A special focus is made on the criteria relating to sustainable development, such as requirements concerning services, equipment, and management, posed to marinas by the accreditation bodies. The following research question has been defined: Do certification and categorization contribute to the development of sustainable sailing tourism? The results of the conducted analyses show that part of the requirements set by the accreditation organizations running two of the most popular marina categorization schemes worldwide relate to the achievement of sustainable development goals. The requirements motivate the management at marinas applying for a category to implement solutions that are friendly to the environment and society, and contribute to the growth of local economies. The research results indicate that the categorization of marinas is not only of some marketing value but is also a useful tool in the development of sustainable marine tourism.

The paper explores whether the change in International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) is an essential factor affecting a country's tourism investment over seven years (2014-2020). The current study employs quantitative analysis to examine the influence of IPSAS adoption on the sustainable development of tourism in 159 countries located in the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The results indicate that the introduction of IPSAS has a positive impact on global tourism investment. Applying IPSAS will increase oversight and accountability over-tourism projects and enhance foreign investors' confidence in achieving sustainable tourism. The results also show that Asia-Pacific countries reached the highest level of foreign tourism investment during the study period, followed by Europe and Latin America, then the Middle East and African countries. The findings of this paper provide a greater understanding of the impact of the transparency and accountability requirements included in the IPSAS in attracting foreign investment and promoting sustainable tourism development. Consequently, public sector policymakers must devise effective strategies to advance IPSAS reporting policies. These results have global implications because sound financial reporting and economic planning are crucial for African countries' development, sustainability, and other world regions. This article is one of the few that examines the effect of IPSAS adoption on FDI as a proxy for Sustainable Tourism Development. Additionally, it makes an innovative methodological addition to the literature on the macroeconomic impact of IPSAS adoption by developing a scoring system for IPSAS transition degree, as no other research has employed this way of estimating transition degree.

Wyniki te mają globalne konsekwencje, ponieważ rzetelna sprawozdawczość finansowa i planowanie gospodarcze mają kluczowe znaczenie dla rozwoju, zrównoważonego rozwoju krajów afrykańskich i innych regionów świata.

This study aimed to assess the opinion of the inhabitants of protected areas in the Polish--German borderland on the development of tourism using the concept of sustainable tourism. It was examined whether the type of protected area and the country of residence were determinants of sustain-able tourism development. In 2019-2020, a questionnaire survey was conducted among residents near 14 protected areas in the Pomerania Euroregion. Multinomial and ordinal logit models were used in the data analysis. The main limitations of the survey were the inability to refer to similar surveys from previ-ous years and for other protected areas in Poland and Germany. This prevented a complete spatial-tem-poral analysis. The study carried out on the acceptance by inhabitants of the neighbourhood of protected areas in the Pomerania Euroregion is unique. The Polish protected regions of the Pomerania Euroregion were shown to have more significant potential for sustainable tourism development than the German ones. The results also show some differences in the perception of tourism by the Poles and the Germans.

Uniemożliwiło to przeprowadzenie pełnej analizy przestrzenno--czasowej.
