Prace te stanowią pierwszy etap projektu ValorWaste, w ramach którego kolejne działania będą dotyczyły zastępowania surowców krytycznych odpadami i produktami ubocznymi w celu dalszej redukcji śladu środowiskowego produkcji cementu.

Cement is one of the key materials in the construction sector, but its production accounts for approximately 7–8% of global CO2 emissions, which, in the context of sustainable development and climate neutrality goals, highlights the importance of life cycle assessment (LCA). This paper presents a review of recent literature concerning changes in cement composition and their environmental impacts assessed using LCA methodology. Studies on cement with alternative materials as additives and company EPD reports were analysed, with particular emphasis on carbon footprint, energy consumption, and system boundaries. In addition, a comparative analysis was carried out between conventional clinker production and a variant in which grid electricity was replaced by electricity generated by photovoltaic panels, modelled in SimaPro. This work constitutes the first stage of the ValorWaste project, in which subsequent activities will focus on substituting critical raw materials with wastes and by-products to further reduce the environmental footprint of cement production.
The analysis of hydrothermal carbonization technology processing showed that this technology effectively transforms hydrated biomass into high-quality hydrated and biocarbon pellets used as biofuels. One of the key advantages of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is its ability to enhance the efficiency of bio-waste recycling, leading to increased productivity in waste management. It also decreases reliance on fossil fuels by providing a sustainable alternative energy source while lowering greenhouse gas emissions associated with conventional waste disposal. The process is highly efficient, converting a significant part of biowaste carbon into biocarbon. Hydrothermal carbonization is an exothermic process operating with low energy consumption. The hydrochar produced can be utilized as a soil amendment, enriching soil and sequestering carbon. Investing in innovative technologies like HTC strengthens sustainable waste management strategies, fostering the circular economy concept. By increased use of hydrothermal carbonization, the volume of untreated biowaste can be reduced while simultaneously producing environmentally friendly materials. The development of this technology holds great potential for transforming organic waste into valuable resources, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional disposal. The assessment showed that it is possible to process approximately 50 million tons of biomass per year in Poland using the HTC method and thus produce about 16.5 million tons of carbon bio pellets.

Przedstawiono metodę hydrotermalnej karbonizacji (HTC) przekształcającą uwodnioną biomasę w wysokiej jakości pellety biowęgla, chemicznie stabilne i składowalne.

Disadvantaged groups refer to individuals or social communities that are in unfavorable social, economic, or educational circumstances, making them particularly vulnerable to social exclusion. These groups gain significant importance in the context of the energy transition, which is one of the most pressing challenges of the Anthropocene era. The urgency to transform our energy systems has never been greater. The energy transition, defined as the shift to clean, sustainable energy sources, offers the promise not only of mitigating the impacts of climate change but also of reducing poverty and enhancing social equity. However, the energy transition requires a holistic approach that considers the intricate interconnections between social, political, and environmental factors, especially in terms of its consequences. These consequences will be particularly pronounced in coal-dependent regions, where both industry and social life have historically revolved around coal mining. Moving away from coal extraction and exploitation in post-mining regions will lead to profound changes in the labor market, potentially causing what is termed “territorial stress,” resulting from deep economic and social transformations. In this context, the principles of a Just Transition emphasize the need to prioritize disadvantaged groups, who are likely to be most affected by the energy transition. This article aims to analyze the opportunities and challenges that the energy transition presents for disadvantaged groups in Silesian Coal Region.

Transformacja energetyczna oznacza jednocześnie konieczność podejścia holistycznego i zrozumienia wzajemnych interrelacji między ładem społecznym, politycznym a kwestami środowiskowymi, szczególnie w aspekcie jej konsekwencji.
Zastosowanie katalizatorów stanowi jedno z rozwiązań problemu minimalizacji emisji toksycznych związków i obniżenia ilości spalin emitowanych do atmosfery podczas spalania paliw w różnych środkach transportu.

Increasing public awareness of air pollution emissions, the consequences that follow, as well as the tightening of standards and regulations, has a very strong impact on industry, transportation and energy. The use of catalysts is one of the solutions to the problem of minimizing the emission of toxic emissions and decreasing the amount of exhaust gases emitted to the atmosphere during the combustion of fuels in various means of transportation. In their construction, catalysts contain a combination of three metals, Pt, Pd and Rh, which are key elements that minimize harmful emissions. Due to the continuous development of the automotive sector and the increasing number of vehicles on the Polish market, the production of automotive catalysts is the largest sector of demand and consumption of PGMs (platinum group metals). Most studies and expert opinions predict that future demand for these critical metals will increase as a result. This brings with it the need to recycle catalytic converters and turn back PGMs in the production process, so as to minimize their extraction from primary sources.
The properties and composition of the sludge generated in water treatment systems depend primarily on the type and composition of the water to be treated, the treatment methods, and the type and doses of chemical reactants. The sludge produced in the water treatment plant (WTP) under study follows the technological processes of coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration. The analyses aimed to characterize the sludge in terms of its physico-chemical properties and classify it in terms of its potential discharge into the river and management. Four series of sediment tests were conducted over a calendar year (March, June, September and December), analysing selected parameters using various test methods, including the X-ray crystallography (XRF) method. The publication's authors showed that the sediment consists mainly of sand, clay, and silt particles with grain sizes ranging from 0.001 mm to 1 mm. Silica (53.78%), alumina (23.58%), calcium oxide (8.28%), iron (III) oxide (5.61%), and potassium oxide (2.36%) represent the main chemical constituents present in the sediment. The authors characterized the sediment in terms of the content of biogenic compounds: various forms of phosphorus and nitrogen, organic compounds – determined as total organic carbon (TOC), selected metals, and the content of individual elements (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur). In addition, the sludge samples were also characterized in terms of calorific value, ash content, water content, and heat of combustion. Discharging WTP sludge into rivers, ponds, and lakes or storing dewatered sludge is an environmentally unfriendly form of disposal for this type of waste. The authors see the possibility of conducting further research on using WTP sludge in wastewater treatment, removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions, producing cement and construction materials, and recovering or recycling.
The textile and clothing industry is one of the most resource-intensive and polluting industries. The circular economy (CE) is one of the solutions to these problems. The textile industry has been identified as one of the most in need of transformation towards CE. The transition to a circular economy requires changes in the behavior and actions of all market players. Consumer interest in sustainability and the CE can stimulate companies to be more responsible and offer more circular solutions. This article analyses the knowledge and attitudes of consumers, adults living in Lodz (Poland), towards new circular models in the fashion industry (e.g. rent, repair). The development of the clothing rental service is still insufficient, but repair and the use of online portals to sell/ buy second-hand clothing is becoming increasingly popular. However, it is still necessary to orient people towards environmentally friendly activities.
This article discusses the advantages of using renewable energy resources (RES), analyzes the resource potential of Ukraine in terms of energy production and substantiates the benefits of using RES for energy security. It explores the potential of the existing technological infrastructure for the sustainable development of the energy industry in Ukraine. It also identifies the structure of energy capacities and the technically achievable potential of energy production from RES and alternative fuels as a basis for different scenarios for the prospective development of alternative energy in Ukraine. Modele te pokazują aktualny stan bezpieczeństwa energetycznego Ukrainy w zakresie potencjału surowcowego, wystarczalności ekonomicznej oraz wsparcia instytucjonalnego i organizacyjnego wykorzystania surowców energetycznych.
The Green Deal and the New Industrial Strategy for Europe recognize the access to raw materials and the security of supply from secondary and primary sources as essential for Europe’s transition to sustainability. It can be expected that with the development of the circular economy approach, the extraction of primary resources would be diminished, but it is emphasized that a circular economy may need a wider range of metals and other raw materials critical to the new environmentally friendly technology, especially in renewable energy and mobility. Therefore, the latest global initiatives and EU policies focus on ensuring resource efficiency in a holistic manner, from the extraction of raw materials to the re-use of the end products, which requires data transparency not only on material and waste flows, but also on financial and economic burdens including incentives and subsidies. In addition, for sectors with significant environmental impacts, the transparency of information on payments to central governments and local authorities can increase social acceptance and accountability and allow for further development. The paper analyzes regulations and initiatives supporting the disclosure of wider data than required in financial and corporate social responsibility reporting related to the implementation of a circular economy. As circular economy indicators take upstream resource flows into account, the transparency of environmental and economic data in the value chain is required, for example for the calculation of the environmental footprint. Moreover, transparency is important for mining companies’ stakeholders to increase social acceptance of mining activities and facilitate the transition to a circular economy.

Artykuł analizuje regulacje i inicjatywy wspierające ujawnianie szerszych danych niż wymagane w raportach finansowych i społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu, związanych z wdrażaniem gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym.

A technological quality method was used to compare two methods of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) production. The first method was the classic spray method (CM) and the second was a dry single-stage method (DSM). The assessment criteria were environmental, based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) evaluation and economic, based on production costs. The technological quality assessment of CM was 6.5% lower in comparison to DSM. LCA environmental analyses showed that the partial environmental quality of DSM was lower by only 4.4% compared to CM. Partial economic quality was lower by 10.3%, mainly due to the lower energy costs (on average 52%) for DSM. The advantage of the new DSM method is the technological progress achieved, mainly due to the application of new technology, design, and apparatus solutions; thus, the basic elements of the activities proposed in the methodology allow for cleaner STPP production.
The operation of thermal devices and installations, in particular heat exchangers, is associated with the formation of various deposits of sediments, forming the boiler scale. The amount of precipitate depends on the quality of the flowing liquids treatment, as well as the intensity of the use of devices. There are both mechanical and chemical treatment methods to remove these deposits. The chemical methods of boiler scale treatment include the cleaning method consisting in dissolving boiler scale inside heat devices. Worked out descaling concentrate contains phosphoric acid (V) and the components that inhibit corrosion, anti-foam substances, as well as anti-microbial substances as formalin, ammonium chloride, copper sulphate and zinc sulfate. Dissolution of the boiler scale results in the formation of wastewater which can be totally utilized as raw materials in phosphoric fertilizer production. As a result, both the preparation produced and its use are entirely free from waste.
Building a Strategic Battery Value Chain in Europe COM/2019/176 is a priority for EU policy. Europe’s current share of global cell production is only 3%, while Asia has already reached 85%. To ensure a competitive position and independence in the battery market, Europe must act quickly and comprehensively in the field of innovation, research and construction of the infrastructure needed for large-scale battery production. The recycling of used batteries can have a significant role in ensuring EU access to raw materials. In the coming years, a very rapid development of the battery and rechargable battery market is forecast throughout the EU. In the above context, the recycling of used batteries plays an important role not only because of their harmful content and environmental impact, or adverse impact on human health and life, but also the ability to recover many valuable secondary raw materials and combine them in the battery life cycle (Horizon 2010 Work Programme 2018–2020 (European Commission Decision C(2019) 4575 of 2 July 2019)). In Poland, more than 80% of used batteries are disposable batteries, which, together with municipal waste, end up in a landfill and pose a significant threat to the environment. This paper examines scenarios and directions for development of the battery recycling market in Poland based on the analysis of sources of financing, innovations as well as economic and legal changes across the EU and Poland concerning recycling of different types of batteries and rechargable batteries.

The paper presents an application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method for the environmental evaluation of the technologies for the fertilizers production. LCA has been used because it enables the most comprehensive identification, documentation and quantification of the potential impacts on the environment and the evaluation and comparison of all significant environmental aspects. The main objective of the study was to assess and compare two technologies for the production of phosphorus (P) fertilizers coming from primary and secondary sources. In order to calculate the potential environmental impact the IMPACT 2002+ method was used. The first part of the LCA included an inventory of all the materials used and emissions released by the system under investigation. In the following step, the inventory data were analyzed and aggregated in order to calculate one index representing the total environmental burden. In the scenario 1, fertilizers were produced with use of an integrated technology for the phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ash (SSA) and P fertilizer production. Samples of SSA collected from two Polish mono-incineration plants were evaluated (Scenario 1a and Scenario 1b). In the scenario 2, P-based fertilizer (reference fertilizer – triple superphosphate) was produced from primary sources – phosphate rock. The results of the LCA showed that both processes contribute to a potential environmental impact. The overall results showed that the production process of P-based fertilizer affects the environment primarily through the use of the P raw materials. The specific results showed that the highest impact on the environment was obtained for the Scenario 2 (1.94899 Pt). Scenario 1a and 1b showed the environmental benefits associated with the avoiding of SSA storage and its emissions, reaching -1.3475 Pt and -3.82062 Pt, respectively. Comparing results of LCA of P-based fertilizer production from different waste streams, it was indicated that the better environmental performance was achieved in the scenario 1b, in which SSA had the higher content of P (52.5%) in the precipitate. In this case the lower amount of the energy and materials, including phosphoric acid, was needed for the production of fertilizer, calculated as 1 Mg P2O5. The results of the LCA may play a strategic role for the decision-makers in the aspect of searching and selection of the production and recovery technologies. By the environmental evaluation of different alternatives of P-based fertilizers it is possible to recognize and implement the most sustainable solutions.

Tantalum is a chemical element with important properties. It is used in industry and its numerous branches for instance in jewelry and watchmaking products. As a result, it is not uncommon for this metal to become an object of interest for a variety of buyers. After it has been bought back from the customers, tantalum can be recycled and, as a result, its full content can be retrieved. In economy, tantalum has become a ‘technology-critical element’ which is increasingly used in new technologies. This has led to a need to evaluate potential environmental impacts, which, in turn, requires knowledge of its concentration in the natural and industrial environment. This paper will present secondary sources of tantalum extraction and recycling, which makes it possible to limit the use of this raw material from natural sources, which are in increasing exhaustion. The analysis also includes the case study of the old Penouta mine, and processing of tailings from waste-rock heaps and ponds on these area. It is located in the innermost part of the Iberian Variscan Belt in Galicia in northwest Spain where two main formations crop out: the Viana do Bolo Series (high-grade metamorphic rocks) and the Ollo de Sapo Formation.
Assessment and management of risk constitute the subject of many researches. Nevertheless, many more specific factors are applicable during the implementation of innovative technological projects. On the article identified risk factors, which have been supplemented, systematized and assigned to the individual risk categories. The risk assessment methods for R&D projects have been analysed, as well as the risk sheets have been developed for the R&D project through the use of dotProject application. Also shown that networking and clustering is a change for fruitful cooperation within difference EU projects, which create trust between business and sciences and reduce the risk.
Gospodarka odpadami komunalnymi w Polsce stoi przed szeregiem wyzwań w aspekcie wdrażania GOZ, przede wszystkim w zakresie osiągnięcia narzuconych przez KE wartości recyklingu, do minimum 55% do 2025 r.

Municipal waste management has been an area of special interest of the European Commission (EC) for many years. In 2018, the EC pointed out issues related to municipal waste management as an important element of the monitoring framework for the transition towards a circular economy (CE), which is currently a priority in the economic policy of the European Union (EU). In the presented monitoring framework, 10 CE indicators were identified, among which issues related to municipal waste appear directly in two areas of the CE – in the field of production and in the field of waste management, and indirectly – un two other areas – secondary raw materials, and competitiveness and innovation. The paper presents changes in the management of municipal waste in Poland in the context of the implementation of the CE assumptions, a discussion of the results of CE indicators in two areas of the CE monitoring framework in Poland (production and waste management), and a comparison of the results against other European countries. In Poland, tasks related to the implementation of municipal waste management from July 1, 2013 are the responsibility of the municipality, which is obliged to ensure the conditions for the system of selective collection and collection of municipal waste from residents, as well as the construction, maintenance and operation of regional municipal waste treatment installations (RIPOK). The municipality is also committed to the proper management of municipal waste, in accordance with the European waste management hierarchy, whose overriding objective is to prevent waste formation and limiting its amount, then recycling and other forms of disposal, incineration and safe storage. The study analyzed changes in the value of two selected CE indicators, i.e. (1) the municipal waste generation indicator, in the area of production and (2) the municipal waste recycling indicator, in the area of waste management. For this purpose, statistical data of the Central Statistical Office (GUS) and Eurostat were used. Data has been presented since 2014, i.e. from the moment of initiating the need to move to the CE in the EU. In recent years, there has been an increase in the amount of municipal waste generated in Poland as well as in the EU. According to Eurostat, the amount of municipal waste generated per one inhabitant of Poland increased from 272 kg in 2014 to 315 kg in 2017. It should be noted that the average amount of municipal waste generated in Poland in 2017 was one of the lowest in EU, with a European average of 486 kg/person. Poland has achieved lower levels of municipal waste recycling (33.9%) than the European average (46%). The reason for Poland’s worse results in the recycling of municipal waste may be, among others, the lack of sufficiently developed waste processing infrastructure, operating in other countries such as Germany and Denmark, and definitely higher public awareness of the issue of municipal waste in developed countries. Municipal waste management in Poland faces a number of challenges in the implementation of GOZ, primarily in terms of achieving the recycling values imposed by the EC, up to a minimum of 55% by 2025.

Nowadays, one of the principal axes of the activity is the transformation from linear economy into circular economy, where the waste is the beginning of another life cycle, and the consumption of raw materials, energy and wastes is minimized through among others creation circulation circuits. However, to fully implement these postulates is necessary to develop good practices in the field of business and science cooperation to promote circular economy. The main goal of the article is s a project review established by European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) in the metal sector, which are crucial for the development of among others modern technologies.
W artykule przedstawiono problematykę odzysku surowców metalicznych z baterii i akumulatorów w Polsce. Przyjęto optymistyczne założenie, iż zgodnie z koncepcją gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym, działania w zakresie recyklingu i pozyskiwania metali z odpadów będą w Polsce wspierane. Jest to o tyle realistyczne, iż w styczniu 2019 r. utworzono nową Krajową Inteligentną Specjalizację Gospodarka o obiegu zamkniętym – woda, surowce kopalne, odpady.

The article presents the issues connected with recovery of metals from batteries and accumulators in Poland. On the basis of available data about - the amount of generated waste (GIOŚ, GUS), volume of production, as well as literature review on possibilities of technological recovery and after verification with recyclers - the amount of metals to be recovered was estimated, at present and in the future. It was assumed that implementation of circular economy concept in Poland will support activities in the field of recycling and recovering metals from waste. Moreover a new National Smart Specialization was created in January 2019, entitled The circular economy - water, fossil, raw materials, waste. In addition, the proposal of the Mineral Policy of Poland implementation with the pillar on raw materials recovery from waste has been broadly discussed. Also the dynamic development of high technologies increases the demand for various raw materials, including rare metals. Therefore, it can be considered that it will be no additional legal, environmental or social barriers to recover metals from waste
