5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a naturally occurring amino acid present in all living cells. Application of this compound across various fields is primarily attributed to its unique biochemical properties. As a precursor to heme, 5-ALA possesses the ability to be converted into protoporphyrin IX, a molecule with photosensitizing characteristics. Consequently, 5-ALA is employed in photodynamic pathogen inactivation and in photodynamic therapy and diagnostics targeting neoplastic tissues. Furthermore, 5-ALA enhances plant tolerance to abiotic stress factors and plays a critical role in metabolic processes essential for optimal plant growth. 5-ALA is used as a natural biostimulant, promoting increased chlorophyll synthesis and thereby enhancing photosynthetic efficiency. Extensive research is ongoing regarding the application of 5-ALA in animal husbandry and aquaculture.

Visible light is a potential innovative method for developing the activated sludge (AS) system. AS is consisted of a complex community of diverse microbes that respond differently to light based on wavelength, intensity, and exposure time. The present study examined the possibility of stimulating activated sludge using visible light radiation. Five light wavelengths (white, solar, red, blue, and green lights) are provided with three intensity levels. Mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) and mixed liquor volatile suspended solid (MLVSS) were used as indicators to evaluate activated sludge performance. From the experimental results, 15–20 days achieved high biomass productivity for all wavelengths. There was a direct relationship between AS biomass and intensity, except white light, the proportion was inverse. Green, blue, and red light achieved maximum stimulation of MLSS reached (48.57, 48.29, and 33.57%) relative to control at (130±3.41, 100±2.9, and 40±4.89 W m-2). Besides, the highest stimulation of MLVSS under green, white, and solar light was (84.54, 55.01, 39.33%) relative to control at (115±3.17, 24±3.72, 40±3.1 W m-2). The maximum growth rate (μ) of MLSS and MLVSS achieved under white and green lights reached (0.096235, and 0.115377 d-1) at (24±3.72, 115±3.17 W m-2), during 5 days, respectively. Van and the developed models could predict a high correlation exceeding (r = 0.98) with white and solar light.

The aim of the study was to analyze the growth and development of two species of duckweed: Lemna minor and Lemna trisulca under different combinations of temperature (15–25 °C) and photoperiod (12–24 hours), while controlling physicochemical parameters such as electrical conductivity, pH, and oxygen content. The plants were placed in synthetic nitrogen medium, and their growth was monitored for 40 days. Statistical methods, including analysis of variance (ANOVA) and principal component analysis (PCA), were used for data analysis. The results showed that both species grow better at higher temperatures (25 °C) and longer photoperiods (24 hours). Lemna minor achieved higher surface coverage up to 58.4% and biomass over 1.44 g fresh weight under optimal conditions (25 °C and a 12-hour photoperiod), indicating its high efficiency in utilizing favourable conditions. Lemna trisulca, on the other hand, showed a more stable increase in biomass (1.03 g fresh weight) and cover 45.8% under its extreme conditions (15 °C and 12-hour photoperiod). Regarding adaptation to changing physicochemical conditions, Lemna minor responded better to favourable parameters, achieving higher growth rates under optimal pH 6.05 and electrical conductivity 31.6 μS/cm, while Lemna trisulca showed stable growth even in more variable conditions, with minimal decrease in growth under higher conductivity (583 μS/cm) and lower pH (6.96). The research findings reveal that Lemna minor is more competitive under optimal conditions, which may result from its more efficient use of available resources. Its rapid growth makes it particularly valuable in bioremediation, while Lemna trisulca may cope better with variable aquatic conditions. The conclusions emphasize the adaptive differences between the two species, which is significant for managing aquatic ecosystems. Lemna minor is suitable for stable environments, whereas Lemna trisulca finds applications in more variable conditions, indicating their diverse potential uses in environmental protection and bioremediation. These studies provide important data on the adaptive capabilities of duckweed, which is essential for effective management of aquatic ecosystems.

Photopolymerization is a leading technology in coatings, adhesives, and additive manufacturing, where efficient photoinitiators are essential. This study highlights Disperse Blue 1, a commercially available organic dye, as a potent yet underexplored candidate for light-induced polymerization. Beyond its role as a colorant, Disperse Blue 1 exhibits remarkable photochemical reactivity, luminescence, and photostability. We investigate its function as both a photoinitiator and photosensitizer, demonstrating its capacity to initiate radical polymerization, enhance reaction kinetics, and synergize with iodonium salts in resin formulations for 3D printing. Its integration into 3D-VAT processes enables the fabrication of functional hydrogel structures, offering new opportunities in soft material design. These findings position Disperse Blue as a versatile component for next-generation photopolymer systems, supporting the development of tunable, high-performance materials for advanced manufacturing applications

Tilted fibre Bragg gratings (TFBG) are used as sensors in the measurement of many physical and chemical quantities. Measurement is performed indirectly by analysing the power of light transmitted at a specific wavelength or in a selected range of light wavelengths. The wavelengths to be used are chosen arbitrarily by the researcher. However, a change of parameters of the TFBG grating requires reselection of the wavelengths to be used in the measurement. Due to the fact that the TFBG spectrum most often shows the most significant sensitivity to changes in the measured parameters in the cladding mode range or a shift of the Bragg resonance, these are most often used in measurements. The need for human selection of the wavelength range to use was the motivation to undertake research into a method for automatic feature extraction of the TFBG spectrum. The method is designed to enable the identification of the cladding mode minima, the range of wavelengths at which they occur, and the wavelength at which the Bragg resonance occurs. In addition, the heights of the cladding mode minima and the Bragg mode were calculated. The developed algorithm detects key features of TFBG transmission spectra for both P and S polarisation. It automatically identifies the cladding mode range, including their minima and maxima. Furthermore, it allows the determination of the position and height of the Bragg mode for TFBGs with tilt angles up to 6 degrees. The present solution is a pioneering work providing a basis for automating the selection of wavelength ranges or spectrum features for use in TFBG-based sensors.

In accordance with the International Coordinating Committee’s recommendations, an acceptable UPLC-MS method is being developed for analyzing Relugolix stability under various stress scenarios. Stress conditions included exposure to 0.1 and 1 N acid, alkali, hydrolysis, peroxide, light, reduction, and heat. The mobile phase for this analysis was prepared by blending acetonitrile and a 0.1% orthophosphate solution in a 50:50 (v/v) ratio. A C18 Column with dimensions of 100x2.1mm and a particle size of 1.7 μm was employed as the stationary phase. The wavelength at which detection was performed was 247 nm, and the flow rate was maintained stable at 0.5 mL min-1. Strong linearity was shown by this method across a concentration range of 1.25 μg mL-1 to 7.5 μg mL-1. The method’s reliability was shown by ensuring all of the validation parameters fell within the acceptable range. Furthermore, forced degradation studies were conducted using standard drugs. Different stress conditions led to the formation of degradation products, which were successfully separated from Relugolix using the C18 column in combination with an auto-purification mass spectrometer. Among the stress conditions, alkaline conditions showed a lower degradation rate. Interestingly, seven distinct types of degradation products were identified from the degradation studies under acid, alkali, hydrolysis, hydrogen peroxide, light, reduction, and thermal conditions. Remarkably, these seven degradation products have not been reported in previous literature, making this study the first to document their existence.

Conservation principles and practices were introduced to Islamic historic cities by European orientalists in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. While they played an important role in the conservation of the historic built heritage, they paid little or no attention to some intangible aspects of that heritage. The place of light and shade in the city is one of these missed aspects in practices of conservation in Islamic historic cities up to the present. Perhaps this was caused by the difference in symbolic meanings and significance of light and shade between Western and Islamic worldviews. The aim of this paper is to develop an understanding of the significance of light and shade from Arab-Islamic viewpoint. A theoretical essay is developed by examining the values and meanings of light and shade within the cultural context of Arab-Islamic worldview and value system. Then, brief observations are made on the light and shade as treated by conservation projects for the built heritage of Cairo. The paper concludes by recommendations regarding light and shade for culture-specific understanding, conservation, presentation and management of the Islamic built heritage in Cairo and other cities within the Islamic world.

Miejsce światła i cienia w mieście jest jednym z tych pominiętych aspektów w praktykach konserwatorskich w islamskich miastach historycznych aż do chwili obecnej. Esej teoretyczny został opracowany poprzez zbadanie wartości i znaczeń światła i cienia w kontekście kulturowym arabsko-islamskiego światopoglądu i systemu wartości.

The aim of the following article is to draw attention to the element in architectural design, which might be considered to be of least importance - colour. Furthermore, the scope is placed on possibly the most outstanding of the achromatic colours - white colour. Being asociated with purity, it is considered by some to be the absence of colour. Among of all the other colours, it has the most features. Not only of these features that place it highest in the colour hierarchy - such as purity and elegance, but also of these thanks to which it takes the rightful highest place. It emphasizes in the combination with colour, it allows it to become more noticable. It is against the background of whiteness that any colour becomes clearer. It is only with black that it forms a colourful pair and it is only in relation to black that it becomes dynamic; in other colour relationships it remains neutral. It harmonises very well with other materials and has space-opening qualities, which is why it is the best addition for experiencing space.

While perfecting the public space of the city in the broadly understood revitalization process, seeking new common grounds for a dialogue with its users, one reaches for the implementation of aspects of space dramaturgy. The essence of the analysis is to demonstrate that urban space (historic, post-industrial, contemporary) and its stage-like quality inspires creators, whereas architects and urban planners make use of the dramaturgy of public space as an important aspect for its revitalization. Quite a special tool in this respect is artificial lighting, which in the contemporary reality requires a balance of ecological and dramaturgical aspects, which in turn constitutes the essence of the concept of nocturnal urbanism. Thus construed creation / modification / revitalization of public space, at times inspired by temporary artistic endeavors, highlights its values permanently, enables to encode a dramaturgical potential in it, which enriches the way it is utilized, improves the quality of life of its inhabitants, but also offers new creative pretexts.

The establishment by the United Nations of the International Year of Glass 2022 draws attention not only to this wonderful and diverse material, but also to its cultural, historical, civilization aspects and roles, and for us, the readers of the Journal Elektronika also the roles in science, technology and industry. The International Year of Glass IYoG 2022, as its organizers admit, is in a sense a continuation of the very successful International Year of Light 2015 (IYoL). Without the success of the IYoL2015, the IYoG2022 probably would not be possible at all? Glass is the basis of optical engineering, volume optics, and also largely hybrid and integrated optics. Gas-phase synthesized silica glass is the foundation of fiber optic telecommunications. Tools such as femtosecond lasers and nanometer material processing technologies have enabled significant advances in research and application of glasses for the ICT. Glass nanometer periodic structures, and in the future periodic modulated ones, opened up the possibility of shaping the wave structure of a single photon. When encountering such atomic-sized lossless glass structures, the photon’s wave function interacts with their De Broglie material wave. As a result of the interaction, the photon’s wave function contains components derived from the material wave. We dress the photon in a stationary material mantle. Glass has a remarkable future in optical photon, linear realizations of processors and functional circuits of quantum information techniques.

PL
Zamknięcie światła, uchwycenie go w przestrzeni wewnętrznej stało się trudnym zadaniem architektonicznym. Przypomina ono próbę trzymania wody w dłoniach. Niektóre ćwiczenia pedagogiczne i nasze ostatnie projekty mogą służyć jako swoista ilustracja, szczególnie „patio” naszej pracowni, które zostało zamienione w laboratorium, z zamiarem dokładnego zbadania i obserwacji naturalnego światła.

In my opinion, intuition is not in opposition to rationality. “Rational and irrational tendencies do not stand in contradiction to each other”, as the thesis of the 17th International Scientific Conference in Krakow states, although I do not believe that we should associate intuition with irrationality. I have always believed that even in the most miserable and obscure place we live in, where shadow or darkness have permanent shelter, a tiny light beam will enable us to connect with reality, with the immensity of the universe of the stars and the planets through the natural light. Enclosing the light, capturing it in an interior space, has become at all times a difficult architectonic aim to achieve. It is like trying to hold water in your hands. Some pedagogical exercises and our last projects can serve as an illustration, especially the “patio” of our studio that we have turned into a laboratory with the intention to examine and observe natural light closely.
