Unsatisfactory condition of a large part of the urban underground infrastructure and construction of buildings, especially those with deep foundations, requires close cooperation of the installation industry, constructors and geotechnical engineers in the project preparation. The safety of buildings largely depends on the technical condition of the adjacent infrastructure. As the situations described in this article show, there is a need to consider the relationships between the underground urban infrastructure and the nearby buildings. Failures or emergencies in the underground infrastructure may deteriorate the technical condition and, in some specific cases, lead to a collapse of buildings or their parts. The emergency events may take place during the execution or operation, affecting both the underground systems and building structures.

Budownictwo podziemne górnicze przeżyło w latach koniunktury górnictwa burzliwy okres dynamicznego rozwoju, dziś znajduje się w stanie pewnego regresu. Budownictwo to ma jednak znaczące osiągnięcia w zakresie doskonalenia tradycyjnych technologii górniczych, znajdujących zastosowanie w wielu gałęziach budownictwa podziemnego. Specjaliści tej dziedziny, i nie tylko, coraz częściej podkreślają, że wiek XXI zmusi ludzkość do rozwiązywania problemów cywilizacyjnych w przestrzeni podziemnej. Budownictwo podziemne w Polsce stanowi, jak dotąd, margines realizowanych inwestycji komunikacyjnych, komunalnych i przemysłowych. Przykładem może być projektowana i budowana droga Kraków - Zakopane, gdzie ogranicza się do minimum długość odcinków tunelowych, mimo że są korzystniejsze pod względem eksploatacyjnym i ekologicznym.

Underground construction has experienced in the years of favourable situation in mining a stormy period of dynamic development and today is in a situation of some regression. The construction had, anyhow, meaningful accomplishments with regard to improvements of traditional mining technologies, finding application in many branches of underground construction. The specialists from this field, and not only, more and more often stress that the XXI century will forced the human kind to solve civilization problems in an underground space. The underground construction in Poland constitutes, as far as now, a margin of transportation investments, municipal industrial ones. Designed and constructed highway Kraków - Zakopane can be an example where tunnel sections are being limited to a minimum irrespective of the fact that they are more favourable both with regard to exploitation and ecology.

Prognozy demograficzne ONZ wskazują na wzrost liczby ludności miejskiej na kuli ziemskiej do 5 mld; co stanowić będzie 61 % ludności świata, a liczba ta wyniesie 8,1 mld. Śledzenie tej tendencji i zapewnienie przyjaznego środowiska miejskiego staje się głównym zadaniem międzynarodowego planu zrównoważonego rozwoju. Wykorzystanie przestrzeni pod powierzchnią terenu jest jednym z podstawowych sposobów pozwalających na rozwiązanie problemów wynikających z rozwoju, głównie ekologicznych. W artykule Autor stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie – dlaczego budować pod ziemią? Pisze także o ryzyku występującym w budownictwie podziemnym oraz kierunkach jego rozwoju.

Demographic forecasts of the UNO indicate to growth of a city population in the World to the figure of 5 bln; what would constitute 61 % of the World's population and the figure will amount to 8,1 bln. Tracing of this trend and securing of a friendly city environment becomes a main task of the International sustainable development plan. Utilisation of the space under the surface of the terrain is one of the basic means allowing for solving of problems resulting from the development, mainly then ecological ones. In the article the author tries to answer the question - why to construct underground? He also writes about the risk occurring in underground construction and trends in its development.
