The energy transformation and the move away from a fossil fuel-based economy towards renewable energy sources (RES) raises new challenges in obtaining and efficient management of electricity. One of the important part of this is the use of electrolyser and fuel cell systems. Electrolyser systems can act as dual systems, on the one hand producing hydrogen for the end user, and on the other offering the service of balancing the operation of electricity grids by absorbing the excess electricity generated from temporary surges in RES production. The article discusses the design and operation of the currently available, four water electrolyser solutions. Their advantages and disadvantages are analysed and the challenges facing this hydrogen extraction technology are discussed.
This paper presents the results of an experimental study investigating the effect of the anode surface area exposed to the aqueous electrolytic solution on the discharge onset voltage required for plasma formation at the negatively charged electrode (cathode) in the cathodic regime of plasma-driven solution electrolysis (PDSE). The study demonstrates that increasing the active surface area of the anode from 3 cm² to approximately 305 cm² leads to a 25.2% reduction in the discharge onset voltage, decreasing it from 59.2 V to 44.3 V. Simultaneously a 5% decrease in the discharge onset current was observed, resulting in a 28.7% reduction in the discharge onset power. This insight is especially significant as it reveals an additional approach to reducing energy consumption in the PDSE process.

This paper represents a review of hydrogen production systems using different methods, showing the importance and many parameters involved in producing hydrogen gas. Methodologies that are included in this review paper are water electrolysis, alkaline electrolysis, thermochemical water splitting, biomass, catalytic generation of hydrogen by ZrO2, polyethylene glycol, geothermal energy, wind energy, niobium-based photo catalyst, natural gas, artificial leaf, and biological production. Water electrolysis involves electricity breaking the water molecule into oxygen and hydrogen. A power supply is given to both positive and negative electrodes, dipped into the electrolyte and in alkaline electrolysis, an aqueous potassium hydroxide solution is used. The following method is thermo-chemical water splitting, a cycle loop of reactions with no greenhouse gas emission. It requires a high temperature to split the water molecule into oxygen and hydrogen. Biomass is a friendly method in which a low biomass concentration is used to avoid the polymerization of products. Zirconia is a catalyst used to increase the rate of gasification in biomass technology. Zirconia is also used in another method to degrade the polyethylene glycol in Inconel at high temperatures to produce hydrogen. Another reliable method used to produce hydrogen is the geothermal energy method which requires a PEM electrolyzer and is operated at a specific temperature range. The latest technology, an artificial leaf with a photovoltaic Si junction sandwiched by Co-OEC and NiMoZn catalysts, produced oxygen and hydrogen in the presence of sunlight and water after the formation of hydrogen stored in liquid and solid form by process of absorption and adsorption.

The article analyzes the evolution of the role of hydrogen in the energy transition between 2019 and 2025, focusing on the phenomenon referred to as the hydrogen swing. In the early period, hydrogen was perceived as a universal energy carrier and a key element of strategies to achieve climate neutrality. Over time, these ambitious expectations were adjusted, due to high production costs, infrastructure limitations, and insufficient renewable energy supply. The study presents expert assessments regarding Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) and Commercial Readiness Index (CRI) for various hydrogen production methods. Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) and coal gasification proved to be the most mature technologies (TRL 7-9, CRI 4-6), whereas electrolysis and alternative methods, such as biomass-based hydrogen or nuclear-based hydrogen, remain less developed. Cost analysis indicates that, under current conditions in Poland, the most economically competitive form is hydrogen produced from biogas via reforming, with production costs of 25-35 PLN/kg, compared to electrolysis based on renewable energy sources (RES) meeting FRNBO requirements, which costs 50-60 PLN/kg.
The objectives of this research work were the construction and evaluation of a laboratory scale electrolytic cell using a bipolar membrane for the production of sodium hypochlorite. The dependence of the cell operation factors on the sodium hypochlorite concentration and specific energy consumption was evaluated, using sodium chloride solutions previously prepared in the laboratory; the experiments were carried out following a factorial design with three levels (3, 4 and 5 V) for the electric potential and sodium chloride concentration (10 and 30 g/L), maintaining a constant electrolysis time of 120 min and recirculation flow of the solutions in both compartments at 350 mL/min. The results showed that the achieved sodium hypochlorite concentration is in the range of (540–1040 mg/L) and power consumption is in the range of (2.1–5.35 kW/kg of NaClO). The sodium hypochlorite concentration and energy consumption were strongly affected by the electric potential applied to the cell, as the voltage increased from 3 to 5 V. In conclusion, this research revealed that this is a promising technology, especially if low concentrations of sodium hypochlorite are used.

The content of this study discusses the kinetic issues of hydrogen evolution on metallic surfaces. For this purpose, the electrochemical deposition of Ni, Co, and Co–Ni alloy coatings from chloride baths on chromium-nickel steel (304) substrates was conducted. The deposited materials were then used as the cathode for electrolytic hydrogen evolution. Due to differences in electrochemical reaction mechanisms, the studies were carried out in acidic (0.5 M H2SO4) and alkaline (1 M NaOH) environments. Using different polarization rates (0.05; 0.1; 0.2; 0.5; 1; 2 V/s), cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves were recorded, showing the current intensity as a function of potential. Based on the experimental H2 evolution curves and the ESTYM_PDE program, a mathematical model was developed to determine the parameters of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on the metal and alloy coatings.

The paper presents the experimental study's results on indirect sonication's effect on plasma formation and energy parameters in the cathodic regime of plasma-driven solution electrolysis (PDSE). In the study, two types of experiments were carried out. The first was to observe the effect of the indirect sonication on the transformation of the DC electrolysis of 10 wt% Na2CO3 aqueous solution from its Faradaic regime to the cathodic regime of PDSE with increasing the applied DC voltage. Sonication was found to decrease the average power needed to attain the plasma formation at the discharge electrode by ca. 10% compared to PDSE without sonication. The second experiment concerned the statistical determination of the energy parameters (current density and power consumption) in the cathodic regime of PDSE with varying the applied DC voltage. It was revealed that sonication reduces the applied DC voltage by 14 V to achieve the minimum current density at which sonication exhibits a synergetic effect on PDSE, reducing the power consumption by 21.5% compared to PDSE without sonication.

The power sector confronts a crucial challenge in identifying sustainable and environmentally friendly energy carriers, with hydrogen emerging as a promising solution. This paper focuses on the modeling, analysis, and techno-economic evaluation of an independent photovoltaic (PV) system. The system is specifically designed to power industrial loads while simultaneously producing green hydrogen through water electrolysis. The emphasis is on utilizing renewable sources to generate hydrogen, particularly for fueling hydrogen-based cars. The study, conducted in Skikda, Algeria, involves a case study with thirty-two cars, each equipped with a 5 kg hydrogen storage tank. Employing an integrated approach that incorporates modeling, simulation, and optimization, the techno-economic analysis indicates that the proposed system provides a competitive, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution, with a rate of 0.239 $/kWh. The examined standalone PV system yields 24.5 GWh/year of electrical energy and produces 7584 kg/year of hydrogen. The findings highlight the potential of the proposed system to address the challenges in the power sector, offering a sustainable and efficient solution for both electricity generation and hydrogen production.
One of the most straightforward and affordable ways to produce hydrogen is by alkaline water electrolysis. In order to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, an electrolyser is often subjected to current levels of 1.23V. The electrodes in an electrolytic cell are the primary structural component. The cathode electrode type is the one where hydrogen is created via the reduction reaction between the two types of electrodes. LPG is combined with hydrogen at a 4:1 ratio to lower the combustion energy because hydrogen cannot be used directly in a traditional SI engine due to its higher energy production during combustion. With the aid of a vaporizer unit, the hydrogen and LPG are combined in the necessary ratio. Through the bypass line created on the input manifold before the carburettor, where air is also mixed with the hydrogen-LPG fuel with the A/F ratio of 17:1 (stoichiometric ratio) for complete combustion, the fuel mixture is transported to the engine's combustion chamber. Due to the usage of LPG and hydrogen, full combustion may occur as a result of the production of a blue flame during combustion. Better mixing of the fuel and air can be achieved since the fuel mixture is conveyed in va-por state instead of semi-liquid form as in a conventional SI engine. This approach of using mix fuel (LPG+H2) for con-ventional SI engines can lower nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbon values in the exhaust gas more effectively.
Energy efficiency is a global need to decrease net emissions and optimise the use of renewable energy sources. Ongoing research focuses on optimizing the use of renewable energy resources to maximize their consumption. Fuel cells, which utilise water to generate electricity, are among these renewable energy resources. Nevertheless, as previously said, there is ongoing research focused on optimising the synthesis of hydrogen and the extraction of voltage and current. In this study, we present the utilisation of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in the extraction of hydrogen and silica nanoparticles for the enhancement of power values. The experiment clearly demonstrates that using a 50% NaOH solution resulted in the production of about 5.602 litres of hydrogen gas. Furthermore, the molar percentage of hydrogen in the final product was determined to be 85.74%. The gas chromatography analysis findings indicate that the product contains 81.58% hydrogen, 11.62% nitrogen, and 0.04% carbon dioxide. The electrical efficiency achieved is 86% with a heat loss of 13.96%. In addition, the research included the introduction of silica nanoparticles into the water. It was noted that this led to an increase in power density when the relative humidity was about 70%. The study also revealed that these nanoparticles had the potential to boost fuel cell performance.
Magnesium oxide (MgO) is an essential material for producing solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) sealant. It can be derived from bittern waste. The common approach uses membrane electrolysis, which requires complex equipment and high energy costs. Alternatively, direct electrolysis can be taken using proper parameters to maximize the production rate. This work analyzes the process according to the input voltage, which varies between 10 and 16 Volts. The designed working voltage is suitable for direct conversion from renewable sources such as photovoltaic. The evaluation shows that the working voltage notably affects the reaction rate of the bittern solution. The working voltage of 16 Volts has the lowest power factor (2.58), while the working voltage of 10 Volts indicates the highest power factor of 3.56. It makes the reaction rate for the working voltage of 10 Volts extremely low, causing the lowest production rate of MgO with only 4.27 Grams. Oppositely, the suitable working voltage improves the production of MgO up to 75%. Microscope evaluation indicates that the produced MgO from the process has a lower agglomeration concentration after heat treatment at 700 °C, which is desirable to ensure effective fuel transfer in fuel cell apparatus.
The manuscript explores the feasibility of recovering zinc and iron from waste galvanic sludge generated during galvanic plating processes. Galvanic sludge, characterized by elevated concentrations of heavy metals, represents a suitable candidate for hydrometallurgical recycling. The primary objective of the experimental and practical phases was to extract zinc and iron through the leaching of galvanic sludge. Leaching procedures were conducted using sulfuric acid at varying temperatures and time durations, augmented by the introduction of oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide or ozone. Subsequent separation of the leach and filtrate was achieved through filtration. The leachate underwent additional processing involving the precipitation of iron and other metals, employing diverse agents. Following further filtration, electrolysis was employed to attain pure zinc on the cathode, utilizing an electrical voltage of approximately 3 V. Comprehensive chemical analyses were conducted on all intermediate products, including the leachate, leach liquor, filtrate, solid precipitate, and the separated metal on the cathode. The outcomes of these analyses are meticulously presented in tables and graphs.
