The new EU wastewater directive from November 2024 imposes a number of requirements on wastewater treatment plants, including more restrictive limitations on nitrogen and phosphorus in the effluent, the pursuit of energy self-sufficiency and carbon footprint reporting. Achieving the required nitrogen concentration in treated sewage may require increasing the efficiency of the denitrification process. In practice, to ensure stable and efficient denitrification, an additional source of easily degradable organic carbon, such as methanol, volatile fatty acids or commercial products dedicated to this purpose, is often added to the anoxic chamber. The paper presents the results of research on the suitability of selected industrial wastewater as an alternative carbon source for denitrifying bacteria in one of the wastewater treatment plants in Greater Poland region. In the first stage, the characteristics of sewage delivered from 51 industrial and service entities were analysed. On this basis, four companies were selected from which the wastewater was used for further research. In the second stage, the nitrate utilisation rate was determined for the process without an additional carbon source, with the addition of a commercial agent and with the use of sewage from fish proces sing, the production of creams and confectionery icings, alcohol production and from a catering company. Although wastewater from individual entities increased the efficiency of the process in different ways, in each of the experiments the denitrification rate was higher than that obtained in the control reactor. Laboratory-scale tests have shown the high suitability of selected industrial wastewater to increase the efficiency of nitrogen removal in a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The biggest obstacles to the implementation of this solution on a technical scale are the variability of the composition and non-uniformity of supplies and, usually, insufficient quantity in relation to demand.

W mieszkaniach gazyfikowanych dochodzi do interakcji niektórych szkodliwych składników spalin, pochodzących z kuchenek gazowych i z zewnątrz, przede wszystkim tlenków azotu (NOx). Do dalszych badań i wdrożenia wybrano technologię selektywnej katalitycznej redukcji NOx amoniakiem, połączoną z istniejącym „mokrym” dwustopniowym układem odpylania spalin.

Air pollution in homes may be largely determined by the condition of atmospheric air. In gasified apartments, some harmful components of exhaust gases from gas stoves and from outside interact, especially nitrogen oxides (NOx). From this point of view, the vicinity of industrial facilities with low chimneys may be particularly dangerous. The article presents the results of research on reducing nitrogen oxide emissions from industrial furnaces in which the combustion conditions could not be changed. The research was carried out for the technology of ceramic sinter production in a radiotechnical products plant. The results of research on the effectiveness of several developed denitrification technologies are presented, including the selective catalytic reduction method with ammonia, the adsorption method with various reagents, and the catalytic method without the use of reagents. The developed methods allow for reducing NOx emissions by 30÷60%. The advantage of the developed technologies is the possibility of combining them with the existing gas purification system from production dust. Another important detail was the presence of substances with catalytic properties in the technological process. For further research and implementation, the technology of selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia, combined with the existing “wet” two-stage exhaust gas dust removal system, was selected.
This study employed a laboratory-scale continuous upflow bio-contact oxidation reactor to treat 50 L/day of municipal wastewater in Al Rumaitha City, located north of Al Muthanaa Province in Iraq. The reactor configuration consisted of two anoxic-aerobic reactors nested inside each other, with a 1:3 volume ratio of anoxic to aerobic zones. Both the anoxic and aerobic reactors were loaded with K1 bio-media, filling them to 50% capacity for fixing and preserving the biomass. The reactors were operated in a mode that achieved full nitrification-denitrification without any sludge return, relying solely on internal recycling from the aerobic to the anoxic reactor. After biofilm formation on the carriers, three distinct hydraulic retention times (HRTs) were investigated – ranging from 24 to 12 hours – to evaluate their impact on removing biological nutrients from municipal sewage. In this operational approach, the preferred internal recycle ratio and gas/water ratio for effective nitrogen removal were a complete feed rate recycle of 100% and a ratio of 1:5, respectively. The experiment results highlighted that a 24-hour hydraulic retention time was most suitable for the simultaneous removal of organic carbon (COD) and nutrients. During this period, average removal efficiencies were found to be 93.51% for COD, 94.50% for ammonium (NH4+), 60.98% for total nitrogen (TN), and 67.57% for total phosphorus (TP). Furthermore, the aerobic bio-contact oxidation reactors maintained an average dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of 4.89 mg/L. In contrast, the anoxic bio- contact oxidation reactors exhibited a lower average DO concentration of 0.38 mg/L.
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the performance of an upgraded oxidation ditch (OD) system, which was designed and implemented to solve the problem of sludge accumulation at the bottom as well as to get the best removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN). The upgrading concept is based on dividing the operating volume of the upgraded OD to achieve interchanging between aerobic and anoxic circumstances in order to provide simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). The obtained results indicated that the average TN removal efficiency was 60%, which could be obtained due to a highly efficient SND approach. In addition, the better TN removal efficiency corresponds to the lower sludge volume index (SVI), which reflects the efficiency of the upgraded OD in preventing the accumulation of sludge at the bottom. Effluent ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and nitrate (NO3--N) concentrations corresponding to a minimum SVI of 41.9 mL/g were 8.6 mg/L for NH4+-N and 8.6 mg/L for NO3--N, respectively. Furthermore, the upgraded OD successfully removes 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended solids (TSS) below the permissible limit for final effluent of 60, 80, and 50 mg/L respectively.
The high content of nitrates in drinking water leads to serious diseases. The creation of biofiltering devices with the longest time of their operation between preventive flushes is extremely important. The purpose of this study was to investigate the features of the functioning of the developed U-shaped submersible denitrifying biofilter during its long-term operation in the piston filtration mode. The denitrification of water by using the method of displacement (piston) biofiltration in a submersible small U-shaped biofilter with immovable carriers of attached microflora in its filter load was studied. As a result, clogging of the pore space of the biofilter in the zone of excess bacterial nutrition is prevented and the vital activity of bacteria is maintained in places where there is no nutrient substrate. It has been shown that, due to adaptive mechanisms, denitrifying bacteria convert nitrate ions into gaseous nitrogen, consuming extracellular polymeric substances. The rate constants of the reaction of reduction of nitrates to molecular nitrogen in different zones of the biofilter under different filtration modes were determined. The activity of the microflora inside the biofilter quickly returns to its original level when a full-fledged external nutrition is resumed. The efficiency of nitrate to nitrogen conversion in the studied biofilter is 94.2±8.9%.
The recharge zone of an aquifer supplying the Tursko well-field (Poland), located in an area of sparse water resources, shows groundwater contamination manifested by high nitrate concentrations and pharmaceutical compounds. This study documents the steady deterioration of groundwater chemistry during one decade of groundwater exploitation, and analyses wastewater impact on the groundwater chemistry using pharmaceutical compounds as anthropogenic tracers, with focus on the influence of treated wastewater and drainage water. These waters infiltrate into groundwater from a drainage ditch located in the water supply aquifer’s recharge zone. It is shown that strongly contaminated water can deliver organic matter and nutrients to the groundwater, activating or intensiying denitrification. As a result, the nitrate concentration has decreased in the groundwater, while concentrations of denitrification products have increased. Associated process of oxidation of organic matter causes periodic exceeding of limits allowed for drinking water. The ability of pharmaceutical compounds to act as anthropogenic tracers shows that infiltration of wastewater is a significant factor influencing drinking groundwater quality.
This study aimed to evaluate the operation technology and functioning of the facilities for the treatment of municipal sewage in a small wastewater treatment plant operating based on the trickling biofilters technology, in the winter (February) and summer (June-July) periods. Additional analyses were conducted to determine the effectiveness of contaminants removal in particular facilities of the technological system tested. The study results indicate that the sewage treatment plant operating based on the trickling biofilters technology ensures effective removal of organic compounds, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total suspended solids. In the summer period, the effectiveness of contaminants removal reached 92%, 52.9%, 97.9%, and 99.9%, respectively, whereas in the winter season, it was lower an reached 69.5%, 12.4, 93.0, and 95.0%, respectively. The treatment effectiveness achieved in this study was referred to the results of the investigations conducted in the same sewage treatment plant 24 years ago. The results obtained may provide a valuable guideline to designers and operators of small sewage treatment plants.
Supplying external carbon sources to treated wastewater is often necessary to achieve high efficiency by wastewater treatment plants that must meet very strict requirements for reducing the nitrogen concentration. The use of conventional carbon sources brings high operating costs for wastewater treatment. It became a reason to look for other, alternative sources of organic carbon. The paper presents the effectiveness of nitrogen removal from wastewater with the use of glycerol as an external carbon source. The research was carried out during the municipal wastewater treatment process in two independent SBR-type activated sludge chambers on a laboratory scale. A single cycle of the reactor operation lasted 6 hours and included the following phases: sewage supply (2 min), mixing (anaerobic) (60 min), aeration (3.5 hours), sedimentation (1 hour) and decantation (0.5h). To one of the chambers in each cycle, after twenty minutes of the sewage supply, glycerol was added as a source of easily available organic compounds. Tests have shown that the use of glycerol as an external carbon source during wastewater treatment resulted in higher nitrogen removal efficiency than in the reactor where no external carbon source support was applied with a low level of COD value in treated wastewater. Wastewater treatment in the reactor without the addition of a carbon source resulted in the total nitrogen removal in 87.8% and ammonium nitrogen in 96.5%, whereas wastewater treatment in the reactor with the addition of glycerol resulted in the removal of total nitrogen in 93.6% and ammonium nitrogen in 98.8%. Despite the increase in the final nitrate concentration in both reactors, the nitrate concentration in the reactor using an external carbon source was lower by as much as 3.4 mg N/dm3. The COD fractions and their changes in wastewater were determined in order to find out their quantitative and percentage share. Determination of COD fraction allows to assess the susceptibility of wastewater to biological treatment, additionally indicating impurities that are difficult to decompose, which reduce the effectiveness of biological wastewater treatment. Introduction of an external carbon source in the form of glycerol to municipal sewage caused an increase in the SS fraction by 57 mg O2/ dm3, thus increasing the percentage of readily biodegradable dissolved organic compounds from 10% to 30%. The increased amount of easily available carbon compounds has contributed to the increase of denitrification rate. In the initial phase of denitrification with the addition of an external carbon source in the form of glycerol, an acceleration in the removal of nitrogen compounds by 1.9 mg N∙ dm3 /h compared to the control reactor, was observed.

Pojedynczy cykl pracy reaktora trwał 6 godzin i obejmował takie fazy jak: doprowadzenie ścieków (2 min), mieszanie (beztlenowa) (60 min), napowietrzanie (3,5 h), sedymentację (1 h) i dekantację (0,5 h). Wprowadzenie zewnętrznego źródła węgla w formie gliceryny do ścieków komunalnych spowodowało wzrost frakcji SS o 57 mg O2/ dm3, zwiększając tym samym procentową zawartość związków organicznych rozpuszczonych łatwo biodegradowalnych z 10 do 30%. Zwiększona ilość łatwo przyswajalnych związków węgla przyczyniła się do zwiększenia szybkości denitryfikacji. W początkowej fazie denitryfikacji z dodatkiem zewnętrznego źródła węgla w postaci gliceryny zauważono przyśpieszenie usuwania związków azotu o 1.9 mg N∙ dm3 /h w porównaniu do reaktora kontrolnego.
Wykazano, że szybkość usuwania związków organicznych (ChZT) w cyklu pracy reaktora wynosiła 13,1÷18,9 gO2/(m3h), ubytek azotu amonowego następował z szybkością 5,9÷6,9 gN/(m3h), a szybkość przyrostu ilości azotanów(V) wynosiła 3,3÷4,9gN/(m3h). Uwalnianie ortofosforanów następowało w fazie napełniania i mieszania z początkową szybkością 43,2÷46,6 gP/(m3h) (stała szybkości uwalniania ortofosforanów wynosiła 0,93÷1,10 1/h), natomiast szybkość pobierania ortofosforanów – 16,8÷23,2 gP/(m3h).

The aim of this study was to assess kinetics of organic (COD), nitrogen and phosphorus compound removal from sewage by activated sludge in SBRs operating on technical scale in a winter season. Additionally, a balance of nitrogen compounds in the operating cycle of the SBR was presented. The rate of organic compounds removal in the reactor’s working cycle was 13.1–18.9 gO2/(m3h), of ammonia removal – 5.9–6.9 gN/(m3h), while the increase in nitrates was 3.3–4.9 gN/(m3h). Orthophosphates were released in the filling and mixing phase at an initial rate of 43.2–46.6 gP/(m3h) (the rate constant was 0.93–1.10 h–1). The orthophosphate storage rate was 16.8–23.2 gP/(m3h). The study demonstrated that complete ammonia oxidation occurred in the last hour of the reaction phase, which meant that the increase in the concentration of ammonia in the influent might result in an increase in the concentration of nitrogen in the effluent. On the basis of the nitrogen compounds balance in the SBR cycle, it was determined that the total amount of nitrogen removed from the sewage by denitrification and utilized for biomass synthesis was 27.02–29.62 gN/m3, while the denitrification efficiency was at the level of 67.4–75.4%.
Obniżenie ilości azotu odprowadzanego w ściekach oczyszczonych do środowiska jest jednym z najważniejszych zadań komunalnych oczyszczalni ścieków prowadzonym w reaktorach biologicznych.
This work presents the results of a study on the effect of electrical current density (53, 105, 158 and 210 mA/m2), type of the external source of carbon (citric acid, potassium bicarbonate), and C/NNO3 ratio (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5) on the effectiveness of nitrogen and phosphorus removal from synthetic wastewater with physicochemical parameters typical of municipal sewage subjected to bio-treatment in the highly efficient system for organic compounds removal ensuring efficient course of the nitrification process. The denitrification efficiency was found to depend on the type and dose of carbon and on the electrical current density. Higher values of this parameter were determined in the reactor with citric acid than in one with potassium bicarbonate used as carbon sources. Total phosphorus was removed in the processes of electrocoagulation and biomass growth. Higher efficiency of dephosphatation was achieved in the reactor with electrical current passage than in the reactor without it. The type of carbon source had little effect on the dephosphatation efficiency. The use of electrical current density of 210 mA/m2 and citric acid as a carbon source with C/N=1.5 allowed achieving 87.61(±1.6)% efficiency of denitrification and 97.69(±2.1)% efficiency of dephosphatation.
The paper presents the efficiency of nitrogen removal from wastewater using Brenntaplus VP1 as an external carbon source. The study was conducted during the municipal wastewater treatment process in two independent activated sludge chambers of SBR type. One of the chambers contained glycerol as the source of easily available organic compounds. The study showed that the use of Brenntaplus VP1 as the external carbon source during wastewater treatment resulted in a higher efficiency of nitrogen removal than in the reactor without the external carbon source applied, resulting in low level of the COD value in the treated wastewater. There was a significant acceleration of the denitrification process as compared to the control reactor.
This work presents the results of an experiment on the effect of electrical current density (53, 105, 158 and 210 mA/m2), the type of an external source of carbon (citric acid, potassium bicarbonate) and C/NNO3 ratio (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5) on the quantity and quality of formed sludge. The experiment was conducted in sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs), under anaerobic conditions, with and without the passage of electrical current, under controlled pH of 7.5–8.0. The study demonstrated that in the reactors with electrical current passage and external source of carbon, the volume of sludge increased along with the current density increase from 53 to 158 mA/m2. At its highest density (210 mA/m2), the concentration of sludge was insignificantly lower. For all densities of electrical current and C/NNO3 values, the concentrations of sludge formed in the reactors with potassium bicarbonate (1.00 to 1.26 g d. m./L) were lower than in the reactors with citric acid (1.26 to 1.30 g d. m./L). The concentration of organic matter was higher in the sludge from the reactors with electrical current passage and potassium bicarbonate, compared to the sludge from the reactors with citric acid. In the reactors with electrical current passage and external source of carbon, the total nitrogen content in the sludge decreased along with the C/NNO3 ratio increase for current densities of 53 and 105 mA/m2. For a higher electrical current density, the nitrogen content in the sludge was similar. Irrespectively of the current density, the nitrogen content in the sludge from the reactors with citric acid was higher than in the sludge from the reactors with potassium bicarbonate. For higher current densities (158 and 210 mA/m2) the increase in the C/NNO3 value caused an increase in the P content in the sludge. The electrical current density increase contributed to increasing the content of phosphorus in the sludge. The phosphorus content in the sludge from the reactors with citric acid was lower than in the sludge from the reactors with potassium bicarbonate. The CST values prove that the sludge formed during the wastewater treatment in electrobiological SBBR was characterized by very high dewaterability. The capillary suction time decreased along with increasing the electrical current density but was not significantly affected by the type of carbon source.
This study investigates the feasibility of using an organic substrate in the form of acetic acid to enable wastewater denitrification in a Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor (SBBR). The impact of nitrates presence on the yield of biological dephosphatation was determined as well. The experiment included 296 cycles and was divided into 4 series differing in the load of nitrates. The N:(C and P) ratios were: 7:(140 and 7); 35:(140 and 7); 70:(140 and 7) and 140:(140 and 7). The hydraulic retention time in the reactor was 12h (6h of mixing – dissolved oxygen concentration below 0.1 and 6h of aeration – concentration of dissolved oxygen 3.0±0.8 mgO2·dm-3). The study demonstrated that the 30-day adaptation period (60 cycles) was sufficient for the development of a stable biofilm. The C:N ratio of 2 ensured the total nitrogen concentration in the effluent below 1 mgN·dm-3. The mean efficiency of biological dephosphatation reached 7.0, 17.4, 18.7, and 30.3% in series 1–4, respectively. In the case of series 2 and 3, no significant differences were demonstrated in the total phosphorus concentration in the effluent. In the other series, the differences turned out to be significant.

The effective removal of nitrogen compounds is one of the main problems of WWTPs. When the denitrification process is inefficient, it is possible to dose an external carbon source to the biological reactor. At „Czajka" WWTP the following substances were used to support the denitrification process: Brenntaplus VP3 and KemCarbo SM70. The analysis covered the influence of external carbon sources used at the WWTP on the efficiency of the denitrification process in the years 2015-2016.The conducted analysis did not confirm any significant influence of the used external carbon sources on the high efficiency of nitrogen compounds removal from sewage at the "Czajka" WWTP. The obtained results can be caused by small doses of the applied preparations. During the experiment a slight increase in COD/N ratio was obtained, sometimes without reaching the value indicated as required.
