The white cane has long been a hallmark of blind and visually impaired individuals, for whom it serves as a substitute for sight in daily life. Pervasive technological advances and process automation have contributed to the emergence of compact prototype canes for the blind. When designing and subsequently constructing such devices, it is important to remember that technology should play a supportive role. Alongside technical aspects, user comfort is equally important, so each prototype deserves a broader consideration in the context of contemporary cognitive science. This article presents the results of laboratory testing of a virtual cane prototype for blind and visually impaired individuals. The purpose of this testing was to verify the functionality of the device itself and to engage in a preliminary discussion of its role in the user's cognitive process.

The composite consisting of bis-GMA/UDMA/HEMA/TEGDMA monomer mixture forming a polymer matrix filled with silanized silica (45 wt%) was modified with CTAB or DODAB quaternary ammonium salts (0.5‒2.0 wt%). The hardness, flexural strength as well as diametrical tensile strength of the composite before and after modification were evaluated. The type and amount of salt affected the hardness, flexural strength, and shrinkage stress; however, they did not influence the diametral tensile strength of the tested composites.

This article is a development of a paper presented at the International Conference “Intelligent Solutions for Industry - ISI 2022”, under the media patronage of the “Mechanik” journal, which is a platform for the exchange of knowledge, review and discussion of theoretical advances, research results and industrial experience, between academics, researchers, policy makers, practitioners and students working on topics related to Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing. Artificial intelligence (broader: computational intelligence) has been an area of intense research and industrial application for many years, but it continues to open up new areas of exploration and application for researchers, clinicians and industry practitioners. The development of the Industry 4.0 paradigm has further accelerated these processes. A particularly interesting field of application for artificial intelligence is medical devices produced by incremental technologies, popularly known as 3D printing. The cumulative potential of Industry 4.0, 3D printing (or indeed reverse engineering as a whole) and the latest developments in artificial intelligence could realise a breakthrough giving new design and manufacturing technologies in personalised mass production. The article shows selected possibilities in this area based on an overview of in-house solutions developed during the implementation of the NCBR grant “Things are for People” dedicated to a 3D printed arm exoskeleton.

Computational intelligence (CI) can adopt/optimize important principles in the workflow of 3D printing. This article aims to examine to what extent the current possibilities for using CI in the development of 3D printing and reverse engineering are being used, and where there are still reserves in this area. Methodology: A literature review is followed by own research on CI-based solutions. Results: Two ANNs solving the most common problems are presented. Conclusions: CI can effectively support 3D printing and reverse engineering especially during the transition to Industry 4.0. Wider implementation of CI solutions can accelerate and integrate the development of innovative technologies based on 3D scanning, 3D printing, and reverse engineering. Analyzing data, gathering experience, and transforming it into knowledge can be done faster and more efficiently, but requires a conscious application and proper targeting.

Purpose: In this paper, in vivo methods of estimation of the shear modulus and hydraulic permeability of subcutaneous tissue of lower limb are presented. Methods: The experimental technique is based on single- or two-chamber inflation-deflation tests in which temporal changes in limb circumference under the test chamber for cyclic loading are registered. Simplified models for fast undrained deformation and slow creep of oedematous tissue with squeezing out interstitial liquid were considered. Finite element simulations of the chamber test within a finite deformation poroelastic model were elaborated. Results: Formulas necessary to estimate the shear modulus and permeability of subcutaneous tissue were derived and then tested or calibrated using the results of poroelastic simulations. An example of application of the derived formulas for clinical data obtained from the chamber test was discussed. Conclusions: A simple in vivo methods of estimation of the hydromechanical properties of lymphedematous tissue (shear modulus and permeability) were proposed. The strengths and weaknesses of the proposed methodology were discussed.

The article presents industrial floors subjected to variable dynamic loads, which have a negative impact on their condition and deepen degradation. Two methods of examination of abrasion floor – BCA examination and research on Boeheme disk – were analyzed, which roughly showed the resistance of the floor slab to circular motion originating from hard, non-pneumatic wheels, e.g. from transport trolleys. An example of the renovation of the industrial floor preceded by the tests of resistance to abrasion is shown.
