This article, incorporating a case study, analyses the evolution of warehouse processes toward modernization, focusing on the practical aspects of implementing innovation within a demanding industrial environment. The primary objective and research problem of this study is to assess the potential of modern IT and automated technologies to optimize processes and enhance warehouse operational efficiency. The study examines an enterprise’s adaptability, defined as the speed at which solutions improving warehouse structure are implemented. The modernization of existing systems plays a critical role in the implementation of advanced warehouse management methods. The study explores the application of technologies ranging from RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) units to complex WMS (Warehouse Management System) class systems. A major challenge for today’s industrial sector is the ability to integrate AI and machine learning with the still-essential element of human labour. Such digital transformation is becoming a tangible form of competitive advantage, while unpredictable times force management to take a decisive stance, which translates into increased organizational endurance. Modern warehousing is the key to achieving both operational and optimization excellence. This study also highlights the opportunity to integrate AI with personnel through “pick-by” systems, while identifying the lack of rapid adaptability as a primary implementation barrier. Executing modern solutions is difficult and costly from an organizational perspective, as it requires full commitment from management and the continuous improvement of infrastructure and resources. Furthermore, the necessity of tailoring technology to the business profile, product range, and contractors is emphasized. In conclusion, achieving the operational optimum through AI is feasible, provided it proceeds gradually and prudently.

Rozwój transportu intermodalnego to nie tylko kwetsia ekologii i odciążenia dróg - to też strategiczny element bezpieczeństwa, spójności i efektywności całej logistyki w Polsce - rozmowa z DARIUSZEM JOŃSKIM, posłem do Parlamentu Europejskiego, członkiem Komisji Transportu i Turystyki.
Background: This paper addresses a significant gap in logistics research by introducing and empirically evaluating a novel hybrid order batching method designed for 3PL e-commerce warehouses. The scientific goal was to compare the operational effectiveness of this method - integrating heuristic, machine learning, and a generative Large Language Model (LLM) - against ten other algorithmic approaches to identify a solution that best minimizes picking path lengths while ensuring robustness and fast processing times. Methods: The study was based on three months of operational data from a 3PL provider, covering orders processed via simultaneous multi-carton picking. The performance of eleven distinct methods was evaluated using key parameters, including average path length, its statistical distribution, and algorithm processing time. Results: The quasi-optimal heuristic method achieved the shortest average picking path, offering a strong trade-off between solution quality and runtime. However, the proposed hybrid approach proved to be the most flexible and robust against data variability. This research confirms the practical feasibility of using an LLM for real-time batching decisions, a relatively unexplored application in logistics. Conclusions: The study concludes that the adaptive, multi-stage structure of the proposed hybrid method significantly enhances efficiency in dynamic warehouse environments. This research represents one of the first attempts to empirically validate the application of a generative language model within a hybrid batching methodology for 3PL e-commerce logistics, confirming its practical potential and contribution to adaptive logistics management.
Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to profoundly reshape logistics and supply chain management in the 21st century - much as the steam engine, electricity, and computers transformed industries in earlier eras. AI is recognised as a key driver in developing next-generation supply chains, enhancing organisational agility, and improving delivery efficiency. It supports a wide range of operational and managerial functions, including preventive, reactive, and corrective actions within logistics systems. Most importantly, AI reduces the risk of human error, thereby mitigating economic and business losses and lowering operational costs. This article aims to identify the most critical areas of AI application in logistics and supply chain management, explore its broader potential uses, and discuss solutions to implementation challenges, with particular emphasis on the human factor. As a holistic review, the study contributes to the literature by mapping current AI applications, highlighting emerging trends, and underscoring human-centric challenges, thereby providing a foundation for further research. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following the SALSA (Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, and Analysis) approach to address the research gap in understanding the practical applications of AI tools in logistics and supply chain management. Results: The analysis revealed five key directions for implementing AI technologies in logistics and supply chains. Human factors - and the related phenomenon of “dehumanisation”- emerged as critical challenges for managers overseeing transformations that extend beyond IT integration towards the systemic adoption of AI in operations and management. Conclusions: The potential applications of AI in logistics are diverse, encompassing demand forecasting, inventory management, delivery route optimisation, resources planning, and process monitoring, among others. Each of these applications influences the role of humans within organisations and operational processes, requiring strategic, tactical, and operational adaptation. The study identifies its limitations and proposes directions for future research on AI applications in logistics and supply chain management. Human-machine interaction should remain a central focus of future investigations into AI-driven transformations.

Sztuczna inteligencja (Artificial Intelligence, AI) to zbiór metod i technologii pozwalających komputerom wykonywać zadania wymagające dotąd ludzkiej inteligencji: rozumienia i generowania języka, klasyfikacji i rozpoznawania obrazów, podejmowania decyzji, planowania i uczenia się ze wzorców. Współczesne podejście do AI opiera się głównie na: uczeniu maszynowym, uczeniu głębokim, modelach generatywnych i coraz częściej na hybrydowych podejściach neurosymbolicznych, łączących statystyczne uczenie z logiką i regułami. Sztuczna inteligencja w logistyce to potężne źródło przewagi konkurencyjnej – poprzez optymalizację tras, prognozy popytu, automatyzację magazynów i wzrost odporności łańcucha dostaw – a także zestaw realnych wyzwań: od jakości danych, przez koszty i kompetencje, po kwestie prawne, bezpieczeństwo i etykę. Sukces wdrożeniowy zależy od podejścia systemowego: danych, ludzi i odpowiedzialnej inżynierii algorytmów.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a set of methods and technologies that enable computers to perform tasks which previously required human intelligence, including understanding and generating language, classification and image recognition, decision-making, planning, and learning from patterns. Contemporary approaches to AI are based primarily on machine learning, deep learning, generative models, and increasingly on hybrid neuro-symbolic methods that combine statistical learning with logic and rule-based reasoning. In logistics management, AI represents a powerful source of competitive advantage – through route optimization, demand forecasting, warehouse automation, and enhanced resilience of supply chains – while also bringing significant practical challenges: from data quality issues, through costs and skills requirements, to legal, security, and ethical concerns. Successful implementation depends on a systemic approach that integrates high-quality data, human expertise, and responsible algorithm engineering.
Purpose: The goal of this research is to provide a practical demonstration of the tier-captive SBS/RS system's step-by-step implementation procedure. This includes making the necessary modifications to the warehouse's operating system, a comparison of investment efficiency, and an examination of the specific advantages and disadvantages of the implemented system. Design/methodology/approach: The article follows case study method, focusing on one deliberate chosen enterprise, utilizing mixed methods research: two in-depth interviews with warehouse managers, WMS (Warehouse Management System) and Kisoft data analysis. Findings: The distribution company found that tier-captive SBS/RS system solutions in warehouses can improve efficiency, reduce employee numbers, and increase speed. The automated warehoused equipped with tier-captive SBS/RS system achieved higher picking efficiency and a shorter picking time. However, implementing these solutions requires overcoming financial barriers, proper training, and addressing human errors. Despite these challenges, the company continues to update IT systems, inspect parts, and replace parts. Despite these benefits, personnel will never be completely replaced by these systems, as they will still be responsible for controlling processes, making changes, and making changes where errors occur. Research limitations: Case studies by definition may lead to an external validity; the chosen sample may hardly allow for necessary generalization; triangulation methods allow for mistakes such as biased information, cause errors due to inappropriate question construction, inaccuracies, or attempts to present the company from a better perspective or maintain anonymity. Originality/value: The use of case study method provides unique perspective into the well- researched field of literature and detailed insight into a highly secure field of innovation deployment into the warehouse system.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to delve into the effectiveness of third-party logistics (3PL) providers in inventory management for retail businesses operating in the e-commerce sector. Design/methodology/approach: The study focuses on analyzing a conducted case study. The case study aims to compare the currently functioning inventory management system with the system proposed by the 3PL provider for managing the location of SKUs in the warehouse. Findings: The research has allowed for a positive verification of the posed hypothesis (i.e., a 3PL company is capable of better inventory management for an e-commerce service recipient). The 3PL provider has the potential to implement an improved inventory management system based on location management and automated storage processes built upon the logistic service provider's know-how. Research limitations/implications: The primary limitation of the research lies in presenting results based solely on a single case study and the instance of a logistics operator with significant experience and an established market position. Originality/value: This article constitutes a significant contribution to the expanding spectrum of research concerning the role of third-party logistics (3PL) providers in enhancing inventory management processes, particularly in the context of e-commerce. The added value lies not only in confirming the positive affirmation of the research hypothesis but also in highlighting the immense potential that 3PL providers possess in implementing advanced inventory management systems based on location management strategies and warehouse process automation.
At present, energy saving and renewable energies represent one of the most important axes of sientific research. One of these renewable energies is solar energy, which has two aspects: solar thermic and solar photovoltaic; this energy is highly coveted due to its availability, but the cost of this energy remains very high, specially for autonomous installations where there are storage batteries. the aim of this work is to minimise the invisible cost of storage and to promote energy saving using a connected network energy management system controlled by fuzzy logic.. There are several types of storage batteries, including batteries that are less expensive in terms of storage capacity and price (Wh/Price), such as OPZS batteries, but they cannot be used for a single consumer because their capacity is very large. In our work, we propose a collective storage structure between multiple variable loads, and each load is equipped with a photovoltaic generator that supplies the same storage bus. Fuzzy logic is used to collect information on the behaviour of loads, in other words the consumers, their compliance with the consumption instructions set in advance, as well as the degree of contribution to recharging the collective storage bus. Using mathlab simulink, we have performed a simulation of the proposed system. The result is that the program classifies the consumers and gives them a quantity of energy from the storage bus according to their class, a quantity that can be estimated using fuzzy logic. This approach can be used in a number of different ways, either by the electricity network distributors by installing collective storage buses in each utility, with multiple benefits such as the use of the storage bus as a back-up source in the event of a network failure to ensure continuity of service, energy savings, because consumers will try to save as much energy as possible in order to have a good rating and benefit from more energy in unfavourable weather conditions. It will also enable the electricity distributor to have a more smart and better-controlled grid, because consumers will respect hourly power consumption thresholds to have a better rating at all times instead of varying consumption rates on an hourly basis, as many suppliers do, to avoid consumption peaks that cause problems on the electricity network, such as voltage drops. Or co-location in a collective storage bus for off-grid installations to minimise the investment cost of the storage bus and be more respectful of the environment.

Obecnie oszczędzanie energii i odnawialne źródła energii stanowią jedną z najważniejszych osi badań naukowych. W rezultacie program klasyfikuje konsumentów i daje im ilość energii z magistrali magazynowej zgodnie z ich klasą, ilość, którą można oszacować.
This paper presents findings 3from an ethnographic study investigating the implementation of a put-to-light (PTL) system within Micro Fulfillment Centers (MFC) to enhance last-mile delivery in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry. Grounded in immersive fieldwork at the warehousing and distribution departments of India’s largest FMCG manufacturer, the study identifies effective strategies for optimizing last-mile logistics by addressing organizational challenges. The novelty of this research lies in its detailed ethnographic approach, providing unique insights into the practical implications of PTL systems and MFC operations. By closely examining day-to-day practices through field observations and informal interviews, the study uncovers opportunities for redefining lean supply chain dynamics, reducing lead times, and enhancing customer satisfaction. The research proposes a restructured supply network tailored to the specific needs and pain points of MFC operations. Despite the intricate nature of FMCG logistics, the study highlights the significant advantages of technologies such as IoT, AI, digitization, and ERP systems. When integrated with PTL systems and leaner supply chain practices, improvements contribute to enhanced efficiency, reduced wastage, and improved environmental sustainability in the FMCG sector, with potential application to similar environments, including food-product logistics, which require shorter storage and distribution cycle time.

Automatyzacja procesów to niezbędny element dzisiejszej logistyki. Automatyzacja magazynów przeszła długą drogę, od stosowania prymitywnych automatycznych systemów składowania i pobierania towarów do różnych kombinacji zaawansowanych systemów technologicznych.
Rozmowa z BARTŁOMIEJEM SKÓRSKIM, Menedżerem ds. Rozwoju Biznesu Hikvision Poland, sp. z o.o. Branża logistyczna przechodzi dynamiczną transformację, dążąc do osiągnięcia większej efektywności operacyjnej.
Background: The research problem addressed in this article is to determine the challenges in the field of cold supply chain finance. The cold supply chain covers all processes related to the storage, transportation and distribution of products that require low temperatures. Complex infrastructure, including cold stores, warehouses and transport vehicles, must be adapted to store and transport products at low temperatures, which can generate high logistics costs. Therefore, there is a need to optimize supply chain finances. Financial management in the cold supply chain area constitutes a research gap, given the limited number of verified publications on this topic. Based on the theory of supply chain finance (SCF) and cold supply chain (CSC), this study aims to examine the challenges that may arise in the financial management of cold supply chains. Although numerous publications on CSC in the pharmaceutical industry and supply chain finance exist, there is a research gap in combining these two areas. Methods: A thematic literature review complemented by an expert interview with an international pharmaceutical company - a leader in supply chain management - and the analytical induction method were used. These methods will help determine the specificity of applying SCF in cold supply chains. Results: This study presents generalizations regarding cold supply chain finance. The article extends the literature by reviewing these practices and by enabling research on best practices, as well as assessing a commonly accepted model for managing financial supply chain challenges. Although the study presents an in-depth assessment of cold supply chain finance practices, its limitations arise from the inability to compare the collected results with those from other companies. This is due to the small number of multinational pharmaceutical companies and the general reluctance to share financial or supplier information with the scientific sector. Conclusion: There is a very high, yet untapped, potential for using a wide range of SCF solutions to improve both operational and investment activities, as well as strategic ones (such as mutual capital investments of contractors). Effective financial management in CSC requires partnerships and advanced technology, particularly in pharmaceutical companies with numerous suppliers. It is also recommended to create departments responsible for supply chain finance and categorize suppliers into key groups.

The innovative approach to the issues of integration of an electricity storage, heat storage and an electrode heating boiler in the heating system in this paper is presented. In recent years, a growing share of renewable energy sources in heating has been observed, which may result in the dynamics of electricity price variability being greater and more frequent than in daily and annual periods. This may apply in particular to the price of heat from electrode boilers. The proposed solution to optimize heat prices at an acceptable level for end users, consisting in connecting an electrode heating boiler with heat and electricity storage facilities is presented.

W artykule przedstawiono innowacyjne podejście do zagadnień integracji magazynu energii elektrycznej, magazynu ciepła i elektrodowego kotła ciepłowniczego w systemie ciepłowniczym.
