On the border of the Kujavian Anticlinorium and the Łódź Synclinorium, the Rogóźno salt dome was formed and broke through the overburden of Mesozoic formations. The groundwater circulating around them leaches the salt body and, being saline, is subject to drainage in the Moszczenica valley. Previous measurements of vertical hydraulic gradients and physicochemical analyses showed conditions favorable for the penetration of aqueous solutions of Zechstein salt into the riverbed, which is particularly intensified at low surface water levels. The main objective of this publication is to determine the origin of groundwater flowing into the hyporheic zone (HZ) of Moszczenica using radium isotopes. Hydrochemical studies were carried out on deep groundwater in the supply area, flow and drainage zones of the Groundwater Body, within the boundaries of which the salt dome is located. The preliminary assessment of the hydrochemical specificity of HZ waters, carried out using the EMMA method, showed that these are waters which, as a mixture, cannot be related to any of the end member elements selected from the set of local groundwaters. Based on previous hydrochemical studies, the share of deep groundwaters in the HZ was determined to be 22–33%. On this basis, the reconstruction of the sought mixing end element was performed with the isotopic signature of the river water and the mixture of HZ waters. Using several computational scenarios, it was indicated that these may be waters from deep parts adjacent to the salt diapir of Cretaceous aquifers from the southwest.

Mioceński poziom wodonośny i głęboki poziom plejstoceński występują w strefie doliny w łączności hydraulicznej. Uwzględniając odmienne warunki kształtowania się środowiska hydrogeochemicznego wód podziemnych, wydzielono trzy strefy: poziom mioceński przed doliną kopalną (strefa A), głęboki poziom plejstoceński w obrębie doliny kopalnej (strefa B) i poziom mioceński poza doliną kopalną (strefa C). W obrębie doliny kopalnej w wodach głębokiego poziomu plejstoceńskiego (strefa B) stwierdzono wysokie zawartości jonów Cl/- i SO2-/4. Dla jonów Cl/- i SO2-/4 wykonano mapy stężeń bez zastosowania interpolacji metodą krigingu punktowego. Wzrost zawartości jonów Cl/- i SO2-/4 w strefie B jest związany z ascenzją wód z poziomów mezozoicznych. Zmiany twardości, zasadowości i zawartości jonów wapnia, obserwowane w wodach głębokiego poziomu plejstocenu, najprawdopodobniej są związane ze zmianą warunków utleniająco-redukcyjnych i rozkładem materii organicznej. W wyniku analizy czynnikowej wyróżniono trzy czynniki kształtujące skład chemiczny wód podziemnych: F 1, F2 i F3. Wyróżnione procesy formowania składu chemicznego wód poziomów mioceńskiego i głębokiego plejstoceńskiego mają charakter geogeniczny i są uwarunkowane obecnym systemem krążenia wód.

The analysis of chemical composition variability of the Miocene aquifer groundwater during the groundwater flow through the buried Pleistocene valley is presented in the paper. The study area is located in northern Wielkopolska, where the homogeneous Miocene aquifer was found over a wide area. This aquifer is intersected by the buried valley located in the vicinity of Wysoka. The deep Pleistocene and Miocene aquifers are found in hydraulic connection within the buried valley area. Taking into account the dissimilar formation conditions of the hydrogeochemical environment, three zones were distinguished: the Miocene aquifer preceded the buried valley (A zone), the deep Pleistocene aquifer within the limits of the buried valley area (B zone), and the Miocene aquifer beyond the buried valley (C zone). The deep Pleistocene aquifer groundwater (zone B) within the buried valley area was found to contain evidently high concentrations of chloride and sulphate ions. Maps of Cl- and SO2-/4 concentrations were made without interpolation using the point kriging method. The incerease of the concentrations in the deep Pleistocene aquifer (zone B) is due to an ascent from the Mesozoic aquifers. The changes in water hardness and alkalinity of the deep Pleistocene aquifer in the research area may be related to the change in redox potential conditions and decomposition of organic matters. A set of factors (F 1, F2 and F3) affecting the chemical composition of groundwaters was distinguished as a result of the factor analysis. The identified processes which affected the chemical composition of the Miocene and deep Pleistocene aquifers are of natural geological character and are associated with the current groundwater flow system.

Brackish or salt groundwaters occur in many places along the Polish Baltic coast as a results of intrusion due to overexploitation or ascension from Mesozoic strata. The results of hydrogeochemical, geophysical and modelling investigations carried out during the last ten years reveal different origin and residence time of water in the coastal aquifers. Differences in density of waters, piezometric heads and recharge by meteoric water are the main factors of the salinization of the groundwater along the coast. Three types of coastal hydrogeological units were established and mathematical models of salt water transport are quoted. Limitation of groundwater exploitation of the water intakes in this region according to the safe yield of water is the master point of groundwater resources protection.
