Division of Surface Science was established in 2021 as a result of its separation from the Department of Physics. Its research initially focused on the design and fabrication of metallic and dielectric thin films with tailored properties. Particular attention was also given to the analysis of their microstructures and optical characteristics. For this purpose, various deposition techniques were used, including physical vapour deposition (PVD) and spin coating. The samples were characterised using a range of techniques, including atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confocal optical microscopy (COM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), four point probe (4PP) method, spectrophotometry, and Raman spectroscopy. In parallel, chemometric methods were developed and applied to the analysis of experimental data. In subsequent years, the scope of research was expanded to include the synthesis of hybrid nanostructures incorporating diatom biosilica matrices, as well as materials synthesised via green chemistry approaches. Experimental studies confirmed the antibacterial properties of these materials. At the same time, research on the nanostructures was directed towards advanced analytical techniques, such as nanostructure-assisted laser desorption/ionization (NALDI) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Furthermore, the scope of research conducted at the Division of Surface Science was expanded to include studies of functional proteins. The use of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) enabled experiments with unattainable conditions using conventional sources. These studies focused on the structural characterisation of proteins exhibiting antibacterial and anticancer properties. The Division of Surface Science is currently a highly interdisciplinary team, bringing together diverse expertise to advance next-generation materials.

Among all kinds of ion-selective electrodes, those with solid contact (SC-ISEs) are currently particularly popular. The elimination of the internal solution significantly improved electrical parameters and also enabled miniaturization, storage and transport of the sensors. However, not all active substances and electroactive materials can be successfully used to prepare these electrodes. The first of them must ensure, among other things, sufficient selectivity of the sensors towards the determined ion in the presence of other accompanying ions, while the second – good stability and reversibility of the potential. Therefore, new functional materials are constantly needed to obtain better and better potentiometric sensors, which can also be used in multi-sensor platforms for comprehensive determination of ion content directly in the in situ environment. This article is devoted to the topic of new functional materials that can be used to improve the operation of potentiometric sensors and expand the scope of their applications. All described electrodes were constructed as part of scientific research conducted during the doctoral studies of the author. Their main goal was to develop new ion-selective electrodes with solid contact with good analytical parameters and sensitive to selected ions (NO3-, Cl–, K+, Cu2+, UO22+), using new ionophores or electroactive materials for their construction. Many different sensors were constructed and tested, the design of which differed, among others, in the material of the internal electrode, the composition of the ion-selective membrane (qualitative and quantitative), and the type and method of using the solid contact material (as an intermediate layer or an additional component of the membrane). New materials were synthesized, their properties were tested using many different analytical methods and then used to prepare ion-selective electrodes. The values of the most important analytical parameters were determined for the obtained sensors and, on their basis, the influence of individual electrode modifications on their operation was determined. Using some of the obtained electrodes, the content of selected ions in natural samples was also analyzed, confirming that they can be used in practical analysis.

Since the Green Revolution, higher crop production has caused a significant decrease in available soil elements. Microelement deficiencies have become a factor that limits the productivity of agricultural crops around the world. Recent advances in bionanotechnology have opened the way to the development of biocompatible foliar nanofertilisers with higher nutrient utilization efficiency. It was assumed that the applied foliar fertilisation would have a positive effect on the growth and development of plants. The application of fertiliser positively affected the parameters analysed of plant gas exchange (net photosynthesis rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular conductance (Ci)) and chlorophyll content and its fluorescence (relative chlorophyll content (CCI), maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem (Fv/Fm), maximum quantum efficiency of primary photochemistry (Fv/F0), photosynthetic efficiency index (PI), total number of active absorption reaction centers (RC/ABS)). Compared to the control, in most analyses, the most stimulating effect was observed for fertiliser concentrations of 0.25 to 0.30% (except Ci - 0.35%). However, the effectiveness of the applied doses depended on the measurement date. To clearly determine the dose that will have the most stimulating effect on the analysed parameters and at the same time will not be toxic to plants, more research should be conducted, especially under field conditions.

The performance of nano-ionic liquids as working fluids for solar thermal energy storage systems is analysed and compared to that of traditional water-based solar storage systems. Critical variables are evaluated via the experimental setup (e.g., heat capacity, collector instantaneous efficiency, and average tank temperature) to obtain the optimum nanoparticle concentration for maximum thermal performance. Results show a significant enhancement in the heat capacity of the ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [Bmim][PF6] with the addition of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO). The best thermal performance is achieved with a 0.60% concentration of nanoparticles that provides a heat capacity increment of 34%. In addition, the instantaneous efficiency of the solar collector increased with the addition of nanoparticles to a peak efficiency of 74.17% at the 0.60% concentration. Moreover, the liquid phase temperature range of [Bmim][PF6] with CuO nanoparticles is significantly more expansive than that of water. It remains a liquid up to 200 °C, compared to water at 100 °C. This broader temperature range makes it highly suitable for high-temperature applications without the water phase change limitations. However, it’s important to note that higher concentrations of nanoparticles can lead to aggregation and reduced thermal performance. In conclusion, our study underscores the potential of nano ionic liquids, with optimized nanoparticle concentrations, as a convincing alternative to conventional thermal storage media. They offer clear advantages in high-temperature applications and can significantly enhance the overall efficiency of solar collector systems.

Ship diesel engines are a significant source of aerosol nanoparticles on water bodies. The nanoparticles, significantly enriched with various environmental pollutants, are transported ashore by air currents or deposited on the water surface. The predominance of transport over deposition depends on the sedimentation rate of the nanoparticles. In general, the sedimentation rate of nanoparticles is very low, but can be significantly accelerated by scavenging nanoparticles on microdroplets. The mist of microdroplets, a kind of sea-spray aerosol, is generated by sailing ships through hull motion and/or propeller rotation. Therefore, the number and size of microdroplets are critical parameters for the environmental fate of the nanoparticles. The number size distribution and number concentration of microdroplets generated by sailing ships were measured using commercially available disdrometer mounted on the prow of an inflatable boat, which chased the ship. A Meteorological Particle Spectrometer (MPS) was deployed in the Baltic Sea, where a ship with a length of 140 m and a maximum diesel engine power of 7.9 MW was tracked. The distance between the ship and the MPS ranged from 40 to 800 m. The microdroplet number concentration was in the range of 8.2·10-4 - 3.1 cm-3 and microdroplet size distribution exhibited mode at 0.05 – 0.10 mm. A Laser Precipitation Monitor (LPM) was used on the Vltava River in Prague, where four ships ranging in length from 30 to 50 m with maximum diesel engine power from 125 to 229 kW and a ferry 8.5 m long with engine power of 22 kW were measured. The distance from the ship stern to the LPM varied between 18 and 120 meters. Out of a total of 54 measurements made, 28 were evaluated. An average speed of the ships was 4.5 m·s⁻¹. The microdroplet number concentration ranged between 4.6 10-5 - 2.6·10-2 cm-3 , microdroplets number size distributions always showed mode at 0.16 – 0.25 mm. Besides the difference of detection capabilities of the LPM and MPS, the differences between the sea and river experiments for droplet number concentrations and size distribution can be attributed to the difference in size and power of the ships being tracked.

Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary field that combines branches of science such as engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, biotechnology, medicine, and pharmacy. Due to the rapid growth of interest in nanotechnology, new methods are needed to study the effects of nanoparticles on living organisms. In combination with in vitro and in vivo studies on vertebrate animals, valuable research data can be obtained through in vivo studies on invertebrates. Drosophila melanogaster (D. melanogaster), widely known as the fruit fly, has long been a cornerstone of genetic and developmental biology research. Its popularity owes to the short life cycle and approximately 13,600 genes, many of which are homologous to human genes. In recent years, the use of D. melanogaster has also been extended to the rapidly growing scientific field of nanotechnology. As a model organism, D. melanogaster offers a unique combination of genetic tractability and conservativeness of biological pathways, making it an ideal candidate for studying the biological impacts of nanoparticles. This article discusses the types of nanoparticles as a drug delivery system, one of their classifications, and use in pharmacy. It also reviews the growing role of D. melanogaster in nanoparticle research, highlighting its potential to provide insights mainly into nanoparticle toxicity, biodistribution, and therapeutic applications.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are multifunctional materials with wide application potential. The aim of this research is to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles utilizing Indigofera tinctoria leaf extract in methanol as an eco-friendly reducing and stabilizing agent. Synthesis was carried out with variations in extract mass, namely 1 g (Z1), 5 g (Z5), and 10 g (Z10) to evaluate the effect of the extract concentration upon the characteristics of the nanoparticles. FTIR, XRD, SEM, XRF, and UV-Vis DRS were used to characterize the samples. FTIR analysis results showed typical ZnO peaks at wave numbers 422-430 cm-1. XRD analysis revealed that the nanoparticles have a hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure with space group P63mc. The crystallite size decreased as the extract concentration increased, amounting to 16.55 nm (Z1), 15.21 nm (Z5), and 13.75 nm (Z10). The band gap energy value increased from 3.19 eV (Z1) to 3.21 eV (Z10), indicating an increase in optical activity at higher extract concentrations. Morphological analysis by SEM showed that all samples exhibited a quasi-spherical shape. EDS characterization revealed that only Zn and O elements were identified. XRF results confirmed the pristineness of ZnO nanoparticles, with a ZnO content of 98.99%. This research provides new insights into the potential use of Indigofera tinctoria leaf extract in the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles, which can be utilized in various functional material and technology applications. These results also open up opportunities for the development of green synthesis methods for the fabrication of nanomaterials with characteristics that can be customized according to application needs.

This study focuses on the characterization of free vibration of composite shell structures strengthened by different volume fractions of nanoparticles analytically and numerically. Using simply supported boundary conditions, the governing differential equation of motion for the shell was formulated based on the DonnellMushtari-Vlasov (DMV) shell theory. For different design parameters, the natural frequency was investigated by employing the Orthogonality method. Four different layers of material, namely Perlon, Carbon, Kevlar, and Kenaf, of thickness 30 mm, were made. Nanoparticles Alumina (Al2O3) and Silica (SiO2) were chosen and mixed in varying volume fractions (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5%) for the sample fabrication. Two types of samples, A and B, were created based on the arrangement of layers. The tensile tests were performed on the fabricated specimens to identify the longitudinal Young’s modulus of specimens. The two groups that consist of different layers of materials were made and named as group A and group B. The results indicate an increase in Young’s modulus of 33.9% increase for nano Al2O3 and a 42.25% increase for nano SiO2 at a volume fraction of 2.5% for group A, while for group B, the enhancement was 37.96% and 47.39% for Al2O3 and SiO2 nanoparticles, respectively. The results indicate that as the volume fraction of nanomaterial is increased, the natural frequency increases. The experimental results are used to validate both analytical and numerical solution conducted by the finite element method (FEM) under various loading conditions. The maximum difference between the analytical and numerical prediction of the natural frequency results was within 5%.

Introduction: Lipids are crucial biomolecules that confer structural integrity to cell membranes, facilitate signalling and regulate energy dynamics. Dysregulation of lipids is associated with various diseases, including diabetes, chronic inflammation, and neurological and cardiovascular disorders. Objective: This review seeks to critically evaluate recent advancements in lipidomics, particularly concerning membranous nanoparticles such as extracellular vesicles (EVs), and to investigate the analytical potential of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) for nanoscale lipid mapping. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted, focusing on mass spectrometry (MS)-based lipidomic methodologies. Particular emphasis was placed on studies utilising ToF-SIMS to image lipid distribution and composition in cells and membrane-bound nanoparticles. While traditional MS techniques are proficient in identifying and quantifying lipids, they lack spatial resolution. ToF-SIMS addresses this limitation by enabling in situ molecular imaging at micrometre scales, revealing lipid heterogeneity within biological structures and providing unique insights into membrane architecture and lipid sorting. A comparative evaluation highlights both the strengths (e.g., spatial accuracy) and limitations (e.g., challenges in quantification) of ToF-SIMS in relation to alternative methods. Conclusions: ToF-SIMS introduces a critical spatial dimension to lipidomics, bridging conventional bulk analysis with nano-lipidomic imaging. Its integration with complementary techniques holds promise for novel insights into lipid biology, biomarker discovery, and translational applications in diagnostics and drug delivery.

Pieczywo jest produktem spożywczym o stosunkowo krótkiej przydatności do spożycia. Z tego względu jest to jeden z najczęściej marnowanych asortymentów żywności. Istnieją dwa powody pogorszenia się jakości pieczywa. Pierwszy z nich to przemiany fizyczne zachodzące w pieczywie po wypieku, ogólnie nazywane czerstwieniem, a drugi to zmiany mikrobiologiczne, związane z pleśnieniem pieczywa. W artykule omówiono tradycyjne metody przedłużania trwałości pieczywa, jak pasteryzacja, sterylizacja pieczywa i pakowanie w atmosferze modyfikowanej wraz z rodzajami materiałów opakowaniowych.

Bread is a food product with a relatively short shelf life. For this reason, it is one of the most frequently wasted food products. There are two reasons for the deterioration of bread quality. The first of them are physical changes occurring in bread after baking, generally called staling, and the second are microbiological changes related to bread molding. The article discusses traditional methods of extending the shelf life of bread, such as pasteurization, sterilization of bread, and modified atmosphere packaging, along with the types of packaging materials. A literature review is also presented regarding new, promising solutions in this area, which are not yet widely used in the packaging of bakery products. Active packaging, where the chemicals responsible for the active function can be placed in a sachet inside the packaging or incorporated directly into the packaging material was presented. It was indicated that natural essential oils extracted from plants with antimicrobial properties can be used to design active packaging for bread. Another solution is the application of nanoparticles as components of polymers with an improved oxygen barrier function or absorbing oxygen and water. These substances, as numerous studies indicate, may delay the development of microorganisms and molds in bread
