The article discusses various aspects related to determining the composition of exhaust gases (i.e. nitrogen oxides) generated by a turbine aircraft engine. The paper highlights the problem of ozone depletion caused by toxic components of aircraft engine exhaust gases. The study is concerned with an engine used on the F-16 aircraft, i.e. F100-PW-229. GasTurb 12 software was used to calculate the engine’s operating parameters and to determine nitrogen oxides emission levels. The calculations were also performed analytically. The calculated thrust value was compared with data published in scientific articles (thrust of the engine). Characteristics of NOx emissions were obtained as a function of high-pressure rotor speed, temperature at the combustion chamber outlet, temperature downstream of the compressor, and engine thrust. The results obtained seem to correlate closely with data available in the literature.

Miniature turbine engines, due to their small size and high trust in aircraft, are finding increasing use in autonomous power systems and for e.g. model aircraft, drones, small generators, experimental vehicles. A key challenge in their development is the optimization of the combustion chamber, which directly affects engine performance, emissions and stability. This article focuses on the question of how to design and optimize a combustion chamber for a miniature turbine engine to achieve maximum energy efficiency while maintaining compact dimensions and low emissions. The goal of the research was to develop a novel combustion chamber design that minimizes pressure losses and ensures efficient fuel combustion in a limited space. To this end, computational fluid mechanics (CFD) methods were used to simulate flow and combustion processes in various geometric configurations. As a result of the research, a combustion chamber was designed and simulations were conducted, which requires further redesign to negate the formation of unfavourable air turbulence zones. The authors' own contributions include the development of innovative combustion chamber geometry and the application of advanced optimization algorithms in CFD simulations.

EN
One of the biggest challenges of modern aviation is the development of technologies that reduce or eliminate emissions of harmful combustion components into the atmosphere. European authorities are imposing increasingly stringent emissions regulations. Therefore, new models of combustion chambers, new combustion methods, as well as new types of aviation fuels must be developed. This article presents the possibilities of using hydrogen propulsion in aviation. The reasons for conducting research on hydrogen propulsion are discussed, as well as the history of the introduction of hydrogen propulsion into aircraft engines. Problems that can be encountered in the production and storage of hydrogen are identified and explained. Proposals for the use of hydrogen combustion or the use of fuel cells to power turbine engines are also presented, and the economic aspect of this type of fuel is discussed.

The article focuses on the problem of loading the combustion chamber of diesel engine pistons together with the method of its optimization using the DuralBowl technology. Along with the growing requirements of exhaust emission standards, the increasing competition in the efficiency of internal combustion engines, the load on the combustion pistons increases due to the increase in pressure and temperature of fuel combustion and the tendency to slim the structure. Numerical analyzes and analyzes of damaged pistons in diesel engines have shown that one of the places most exposed to piston damage are the combustion chambers. There is a concentration of thermomechanical stress at the edge of the combustion chamber, which may lead to the destruction of the piston and the necessity to carry out overhaul of the drive unit. One of the technologies that optimizes the strength of this zone is the DuralBowl local remelting process. This process allows for several timesimprovement in the fatigue strength of pistons in internal combustion engines. The article analyzes the thermomechanical load on the combustion chamber along with the impact of this load on the durability of pistons in diesel engines. An analysis of the DuralBowl process was also performed, aimed at eliminating the negative effects of loading the combustion chamber, extending the piston life. The analysis focused on the microstructure of the material before and after the DuralBowl process.

Sources of renewable energy have been increasingly used all over the world. This kind of energy is highly desirable because of its unlimited availability. Unfortunately, renewable energy production very much depends on weather conditions. Consequently, it is necessary to store the produced excess energy in order to use it when needed. There is a technology able to produce a hydrogen/methane fuel from excess renewable energy, which may be stored. This technology is called the Power-to-Gas technology (P2G). Since the efficiency of this technological process depends on the hydrogen fraction in the renewable energy fuel, there is a need to increase this fraction. Concurrently, the gas microturbine technology is increasingly widely used in various industries (aviation, energy, automotive, military, etc). The P2G technology and the gas microturbine technology are likely to be integrated in the near future and, as mentioned above, the hydrogen fraction in the methane-hydrogen fuel will tend to increase. In order to power a gas microturbine with the methane-hydrogen fuel, it will be necessary to modify the combustor to avoid an excessive temperature increase and flashbacks. In this paper it is proposed to apply an autonomous internal exhaust gas recirculation system to resolve the hydrogen combustion problems indicated above. The operating principle and the proposed design of the recirculation system and the latter’s impact on the combustor’s operating parameters and emissivity (NOx and CO) are presented.

Przedstawiono zmodyfikowaną propozycję wartościowania (ilościowego określenia) działania komór spalania turbinowych silników spalinowych z uwzględnieniem zachodzących w nich oddziaływań energetycznych. Propozycja ta uzupełnia i uściśla rozważania zawarte w publikacji [4].

This paper presents a numerical simulation for predicting the combustor exit temperature pattern of an aircraft engine, developed using the commercial fluid simulation software Ansys Fluent, which assumes a shape probability density function for the instantaneous chemistry in the conserved scalar combustion model and the standard k-ε model for turbulence. We found the compliance of the radial and circumferential non-uniformities of the exit temperature with the experimental data to be insufficient. To achieve much more accurate result, the mixing intensity was enhanced with respect to the initial calculation due to using the reduced value of the turbulent Schmidt number Sc. Numerical simulation was performed for values of the turbulent Schmidt number from Sc = 0.85 (default) up to Sc = 0.2, with results confirming the reduction of radial and circumferential non-uniformities of exit temperature. However, correlation between radial and circumferential non-uniformities is not admissible for these cases. Therefore, we propose to use a temperature-dependent formulation of the turbulent Schmidt number Sc, accounting for the increase in Sc number with increasing gas temperature. A user defined function (UDF) was used to implement the Sc number temperature dependence in Ansys Fluent. The numerical results for the proposed Schmidt number Sc temperature dependence were found to be in acceptable agreement with the experimental data both for radial and circumferential non-uniformities of the exit temperature pattern.

Stwierdzono niewystarczającą zgodność niejednorodności promieniowych i obwodowych temperatury wylotowej z danymi eksperymentalnymi. W celu uzyskania bardziej dokładnego wyniku, intensywność mieszania została wzmocniona w stosunku do początkowych obliczeń w związku z zastosowaniem zredukowanej wartości turbulentnej liczby Schmidta Sc.

The gas microturbines gain significance in various industry sectors. One of their most crucial advantages is the capability of utilizing variety of fuels. At the same time, the emissions regulations become increasingly strict. This is why there is a need to look for a new technological solution to limit the emissions of selected substances, like carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). The internal recirculation of the flue gases is well known to limit the temperature peak and for the homogenization of the temperature field gradient in different combustion chambers. This paper presents a numerical investigation of a novel internal flue gas recirculation system applied to gas microturbine combustors. The ability to perform an internal exhaust gases recirculation by adding a combustor internal pipe system was verified numerically. This paper exposed the numerical investigation methods and obtained results. The study presents the concept and results performed on three cases of internal exhaust gases recirculation systems applied to a reference combustor. The work permitted to demonstrate numerically that it is possible to perform an autonomous exhaust gases recirculation inside gas micro-turbine combustor at a maximum global rate of 0.51%, and that the recirculation system has an impact on the combustion processes without specially modifying the combustor work parameters.

Paper discusses the problem of pressure drop in the process of working medium flow through combustion chamber of gas turbine. The pressure loss is an internal disadvantage of combustion chamber depends on many parameters, especially the chamber design and working gas flowrate. There is a problem to calculate the parameters of working medium in characteristic points of gas turbine thermodynamic cycle because the total pressure before and after combustion chamber is not known. There is a lack of information from manufacturer about it and in publications as well (mainly no experimental data, only theoretical considerations). It will be important information because the pressure drop has an meaningful influence on gas turbine performance. The paper presents an estimation of decreasing the performance of gas turbine from discussed reason. Author of that manuscript recognized the necessity of showing the importance of that parameter and turning the attention to not fully recognized problem.

The article describes the problem of measuring the temperature in a pulse combustion chamber. The object of the study is a valveless pulsejet. The problem is analysed on the example of exhaust gases temperature measurement. The measurement in these conditions requires the use of a sensor resistant to large changes in gas velocity and temperature and at the same time with adequatly low inertia. This excludes the use of fast and precise yet thin, resistant wire sensors or ultrafast thin film thermocouples. Finally, a temperature measurement system based on sheated thermocouples was chosen. During each test the thermocouple has its own temperature which is different from the medium temperature. In order to properly determine the measured temperature of flowing media it is necessary to take the sensor time characteristics into account. In this article the iteration method is proposed to solve this problem.

The proposed article involves an investigation of the processes taking place during the preparation of mixed fuels that are combined directly before combustion. The fuel dose formed in this way must take into account the qualitative and quantitative composition of the fuels and the amount of air in the process. Given that liquid fuels similar to gasoline (e.g. methanol, ethanol, butanol) are characterized by different properties, their comparison would be useful in order to use their ratio to influence the combustion process. The process of fuel preparation plays a decisive role in this issue. The article describes abilities of modelling the injection of various fuels simultaneously to the combustion chamber for creating fuel mixture directly before ignition. First part of the article consists of analysis of light hydrocarbon fuels mixing abilities, supported with present research data. Next part describes the evaluation of execution of the assumed system – two fuel injectors with analysis of spray penetration. The modelling of the injection and spray was performed in the AVL FIRE 2014.2 environment and the results were presented. The injection possibility was proven by injecting the fuel to the combustion chamber model. Local values of air-fuel ratio, density and ambient pressure were presented to better understand the potential in mixing fuels directly before ignition. The conclusion includes description of fuel mixing abilities, influence of various fuels on creation of a stratified mixture and definition of controllability of charge ignition.
