This study investigates the contamination levels of non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in three fish species (Oreochromis niloticus, Cyprinus carpio, and Sander lucioperca) from Al-Massira Dam, Morocco. The sources of PCBs contamination include industrial activities and sewage treatment plants located in the watershed of the Oum Rbiaa river, and lubricating oils from electric transformers rich in pyralene from nearby industries and towns. Fish samples collected between July 2022 and June 2023 were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to determine PCB concentrations. Results show varying PCB levels across species, with Sander lucioperca (5.084 ± 0.501) exhibiting the highest concentrations, followed by Cyprinus carpio (3.329 ± 0.323) and Oreochromis niloticus (2.167 ± 0.201). Predominant congeners include PCB28, PCB52, PCB101, and PCB180, reflecting species-specific accumulation patterns influenced by metabolic rates and dietary habits. Health risk assessments indicate that while PCB levels generally comply with safety guidelines for fish consumption, lifetime cancer risk (LCR) values exceed acceptable thresholds, particularly for adult and heavy fish consumers. Children, more vulnerable due to higher exposure and dietary habits, also face elevated risks. Non-carcinogenic hazard quotients (HQs) suggest high health risks for local fish consumers, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and dietary management to mitigate PCB exposure. Although fish from Al-Massira Dam generally contain PCB levels below regulatory limits, their bioaccumulative nature underscores the importance of continued environmental monitoring and dietary management to protect public health.

Zoptymalizowaną i zwalidowaną metodę zastosowano do analizy zawartości wybranych kongenerów PCB w próbkach rzeczywistych pobranych z terenu Podkarpacia.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are synthetic aromatic compounds produced in large quantities around the world since the 1930s, the synthesis of which was banned in the 1970s. These compounds were widely used, among others, as dielectric fluids in capacitors and transformers, grease and plasticizers. Due to the properties of these compounds, such as resistance to chemical degradation and long half-life (from 3 to 40 years), they constitute persistent environmental pollutants. The highest amounts are found in the soil, but they can also be determined in the air, sediments, water, plants and even living organisms. The aim of the work was to optimize and validate the method for determining PCB congeners 10, 28, 138, 153 and 180 in soil. As part of the method optimization, three extraction reagents and two types of purification sorbents were tested. Validation was performed at two fortification levels to determine the recovery and precision of the method. The optimized and validated method was used to analyze the content of selected PCB congeners in real samples collected from the Podkarpacie region. Based on the conducted research, it was shown that the best reagent for the extraction of PCBs from soil is hexane, and the best sorbent for purification is Florisil. The concentration of PCB 10, 28, 52, 138 and 153 in the analyzed real samples was below the limit of quantification (LOQ<0.005 mg/kg). PCB 180 was determined at a level of 0.007 mg/kg in soil taken from the area next to the railway lines in Głuchów.

The Southwest Nigeria has witnessed tremendous increase in the output of municipal wastes in the recent years. Non availability of government policy on solid wastes management or its lack of effectiveness where it exists makes unabated open burning the predominant means of municipal solid waste disposal in the region. Open burning of municipal wastes being a major source of anthropogenic air emissions was investigated for atmospheric loading of some hazardous organic pollutants using the emission inventory method. The specific pollutants considered in this study were volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo –p- dioxin (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzo furan (PCDF). The estimated release of VOCs, PAHs, PCBs, PCDD and PCDF from open burning of municipal wastes in the region over the 5-year period investigated were 64000 tonnes, 988 tonnes, 43 tonnes, 0.56 tonnes and 0.2 tonnes respectively. Given the serious human health implications associated with these hazardous organic pollutants, the study suggested conversion of wastes to energy as a possible solution since the region also faces energy challenges.

An efficient method of burning polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is often used to remove the environmental burden of PCBs. However, combustion produces toxic dioxins and furans (PCDD/F), so residents are increasingly rejecting this method. The heat treatment (HT) method does not burn PCBs but evaporates it from sediments. Even in this process, PCDD/Fs are formed to a lesser extent, which are destroyed by radiation processing (RP) following the HT. At the same time, the RP method degrades PCB congeners down to biphenyls, which decompose easily in the environment. A block assembly of a complex synergistic combination of equipment for methods of thermal (HT) and radiation (RP) destruction of PCBs in sediments is proposed. The efficacy of this complex was preliminarily determined at a level of 70-fold reduction in PCB concentration in sediments. To achieve a higher reduction factor in the concentration of PCBs, possible procedures for optimizing the settings of individual devices of this complex are presented.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of industrial waste landfill on the release of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on the environment with reference to water flow directions. 10 study plots were designated around the landfill site. Soil samples were taken from different soil layers. Plants: Solidago canadensis (leaves, stem), Quercus L. (leaves), and Poaceae were tested on PCBs contents. Groundwater samples were taken from piezometers. PCBs in the samples were determined by gas chromatography with an electron capture detector (GC/ECD). The highest accumulation of PCBs congeners was observed in the topsoil layers and decreased with the sampling depth. The dominant PCBs congeners in soil were PCB 28 and PCB 138, in plants PCB 28 and PCB 52. The most significant PCBs accumulation in the topsoil layer occurred in the research area on which the largest amount of waste was deposited and was equal to 14.2 ng/g. The largest sum of determined PCBs congeners was found in Solidago canadensis leaves – 3.26 ng/g and Quercus L. leaves – 3.32 ng/g. PCB 28 and PCB 52 were capable of translocation from soil to plants. It was found that the water flow direction did not affect PCB content in soils.

The article presents issues related to biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls in soil by inoculation with a biopreparation IN-3 developed on the basis of microorganisms capable of metabolizing PCB. Biodegradation tests were carried out using the ex-situ technological pile method on a specially constructed test stand. As part of the research, physical and chemical analyzes of the initial soil were performed, with particular regard to the content of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), PCB chromatographic analyzes and toxicological analyzes. Before inoculating soil with biopreparation IN-3, the parameters of the process were established (temperature = 17–25°C, humidity = 20–25%, pH = 7.5–7.8, content of nutrients: C:N:P = 100:10:1), which were monitored during bioremediation. During soil treatment, the content of identified PCB congeners was monitored. The assessment of biodegradation efficiency of polychlorinated biphenyls in soil was complemented by toxicological monitoring, which was carried out using live organisms representing all trophic levels: producers (PhytotoxkitTM test), consumers (Ostracodtoxkit FTM test) and reducers agents (Microtox®SPT test). Also, the presence of mutagenic factors were tested with the Ames mutagenicity test. As a result of the six-month biodegradation process of soil contaminated with aged transformer oil, upon inoculation with biopreparation IN-3, a reduction in the content of polychlorinated biphenyls from 13 153.9 µg/kg d.m. down to 1650.4 µg/kg d.m. (87.5%) was archieved. The obtained chromatographic analysis results showed that the efficiency of the PCB biodegradation depended on the number of chlorine atoms in the biphenyl ring (with the increase in the number of chlorine atoms in the PCB molecule the degree of biodegradation decreased) and the structure of the molecule (PCB congeners having 2 or more chlorine atoms in the biphenyl ring ortho positions were more difficult to biodegrade than non-ortho or mono-ortho, while polychlorinated biphenyls, in which chlorine atoms occur on only one phenyl ring, were more easily biodegradable). The toxicological analysis showed a reduction in the toxicity of the soil tested from toxicity unit TU = 26.7 to TU = 6.1. In addition, toxkit tests (PhytotoxkitTM and Ostracodtoxkit FTM) showed a decrease in inhibition of test organism growth from 69.3 to 14.8% (Ostracodtoxkit FTM test) and from 64.7–78.0 to 11.9–17.5% (Phytotoxkit test). Decreasing the mutagenicity index from 8.3 to 1.5 in the Ames test confirmed the effectiveness of the purification process. Based on the results of the experiment, conclusions were made regarding issues related to biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls in soil.

W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienia związane z biodegradacją polichlorowanych bifenyli w glebie w drodze inokulacji biopreparatem IN-3, opracowanym na bazie mikroorganizmów zdolnych do metabolizowania PCB. Badania biodegradacji prowadzono metodą pryzmowania ex-situ na specjalnie do tego celu skonstruowanym stanowisku badawczym. W ramach prowadzonych badań wykonano analizy fizyczno-chemiczne gleby wyjściowej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zawartości substancji biogennych (azot i fosfor), analizy chromatograficzne PCB oraz analizy toksykologiczne. Przed przystąpieniem do inokulacji gleby biopreparatem ustalono parametry prowadzenia procesu (temperatura = 17–25°C, wilgotność = 20–25%, pH = 7,5–7,8, zawartość substancji biogennych: C:N:P = 100:10:1), które kontrolowano w trakcie bioremediacji. W trakcie oczyszczania gleby prowadzono monitoring zawartości zidentyfikowanych kongenerów PCB. Ocenę skuteczności biodegradacji polichlorowanych bifenyli w glebie rozszerzono o monitoring toksykologiczny, który przeprowadzono przy użyciu żywych organizmów reprezentujących wszystkie poziomy troficzne: producentów (test PhytotoxkitTM), konsumentów (test Ostracodtoxkit FTM) i reducentów (test Microtox®SPT), a także wykonano badania obecności czynników mutagennych (test Amesa). W wyniku przeprowadzonego sześciomiesięcznego procesu biodegradacji gleby zanieczyszczonej zestarzałym olejem transformatorowym, na drodze inokulacji biopreparatem IN-3, osiągnięto obniżenie zawartości polichlorowanych bifenyli z 13 153,9 µg/kg s.m. do 1650,4 µg/kg s.m. (87,5%). Ponadto testy typu toxkit (PhytotoxkitTM i Ostracodtoxkit FTM) wykazały obniżenie zahamowania wzrostu organizmów testowych z 69,3% do 14,8% (test Ostracodtoxkit FTM) oraz z poziomu 64,7–78,0% do 11,9–17,5% (test PhytotoxkitTM). Obniżenie wskaźnika mutagenności z 8,3 do 1,5 w teście Amesa potwierdziło skuteczność przeprowadzonego procesu oczyszczania. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników przeprowadzonego eksperymentu sformułowano wnioski dotyczące zagadnień związanych z biodegradacją polichlorowanych bifenyli w glebie.

The present study thoroughly evaluated the eff ect of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) on eluting of Aroclor1242 (one kind of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls)) from contaminated soil. The factors that might aff ect eluting effi ciency including HP-β-CD concentration, contact time, eluting cycles, temperature, pH, salt content, humic acid, and ultrasonic were all tested to evaluate the PCBs eluting effi ciency by HP-β-CD. Results indicated that Aroclor1242 can be eluted eff ectively from soil by HP-β-CD solution, 81% of Aroclor1242 was eluted from soil by 50 g/L of HP-β-CD solution after three cycles eluting, and the eluting effi ciency was improved by increasing temperature and with ultrasonic. Furthermore, it was shown that the humic acid and extreme acidic/alkaline condition both decreased the eluting effi ciency. In addition, column eluting experiment was conducted to simulate the practical HP-β-CD eluting of Aroclor1242 from contaminated soil, 18% of the PCBs was eluted from the soil column by 10 g/L of HP-β-CD. Overall, the results indicated the high extract power of HP-β-CD toward PCBs polluted soil and potential use of HP-β-CD for in situ remediation of PCBs contaminated soils.

The article presents issues related to the development of the chromatographic methodology for determining polychlorinated biphenyls in soil samples. For this purpose, a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD) from Perkin Elmer was used. As part of the research, optimal chromatograph parameters were determined, such as injector temperature, ECD detector temperature, oven temperature course during chromatographic analysis, time of analysis and a chromatographic column allowing selective separation of analytes. Then, the chromatographic system was calibrated and the analytical method for polychlorinated biphenyls determination was validated, based on the Supelco and Sigma-Aldrich reference solutions with numbers 47330-U and 36989, respectively. Calibration curves for each of the congeners tested were PCB (PCB-10, PCB-28, PCB-53, PCB-101, PCB-138, PCB-153, PCB-180, PCB-209) in two concentration ranges. The validation of the analytical method included the determination of linearity, standard deviation, relative standard deviation, detection limit (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of the above PCB congeners. To this end, the development of the methodology for preparing soil samples for chromatographic analysis has been tested for the selection of the extraction method (extraction with solvent assisted by shaking, extraction with ultrasonic assisted solvent, solvent extraction in a Soxhlet apparatus), solvent/solvent system selection (n- hexane, a mixture of n-hexane and dichloromethane in a 1:1 ratio) and selection of sorption material in the SPE solid phase extraction stage (columns for special tasks, Florisil packed columns). Model samples used soil contaminated with the Supelco standard solution number 47330-U. For all the combinations of the above-mentioned conditions of preparing the sample for chromatographic analysis, the recovery rate of individual analytes was calculated. On the basis of chromatographic analyses and recovery levels, the most optimal methodology for preparing soil samples for chromatographic analysis was selected for the determination of polychlorinated biphenyls. The developed methodology for the determination of polychlorinated biphenyls in soil samples was tested on real samples of soils contaminated with aged transformer oil taken from the areas of south-eastern Poland. The analytical procedure for the determination of PCBs in soil samples included: initial sample preparation (drying, milling, homogenization), isolation of analytes from the sample matrix (solvent extraction assisted by shaking with a 1:1 mixture of solvents n-hexane: dichloromethane), sample purification from disturbing substances (a set of two columns for SPE extraction: Silica gel No. 7086-03 and PCB-A No. 7511-04 from Bakerbond), chromatographic analysis. The application of the above-mentioned analytical techniques allowed to obtain information on the content of polychlorinated biphenyls investigated in soils samples.

Dodatkowo ekstrahowanie próbek porównano stosując jako rozpuszczalniki n-heksan i mieszaninę n-heksan/dichlorometan. W próbkach oznaczono stężenie sześciu kongenerów dioksyn: PCB 28, PCB 52, PCB 101, PCB 138, PCB 153 i PCB 180. Analizę jakościową i ilościową wykonywano metodą chromatografii gazowej z detektorem wychwytu elektronów GC-ECD.

The paper presents a comparison of different methods of extraction of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) from the bottom sediments. High-temperature extraction, ultrasonic extraction, extraction by shaking, and modifications of these methods were tested. In addition, the extraction of the samples were compared using n-hexane and n-hexane/dichloromethane as solvents. In the samples, the concentration of the six congeners of dioxins: PCB 28, PCB 52, PCB 101, PCB 138, PCB 153, and PCB 180. Qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed by GC-ECD. Each of these methods of extraction has proven to be effective and selective for each PCB. The best results were obtained by extracting the sample in an ultrasonic using a solvent mixture of n-hexane/dichloromethane.

The abiotic transformations of 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been examined in the presence and of zero valent iron (Fe(0)) under subcritical conditions. It was found that the degradation of DCP was significantly enhanced, showing complete degradation of DCP in 3 h at 300 °C. Control experiments without Fe(0) indicated that the removal of DCP in the iron–water system was mostly due to subcritical water oxidation and that the enhancement of degradation in the presence of Fe(0) was less significant. Regardless of Fe(0), PCBs were rapidly decomposed, showing 93% destruction in 5 h at 300 °C. Product identification by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that the reductive transformation of DCP and PCBs w Fe(0) existed under subcritical conditions. Our results suggest that subcritical water degradation may be a possible remediation option to treat DCP and PCBs in water and soil.

Management practices for medical waste should be conducted using the best available techniques in order to minimize harmful effects of medical waste. Most common practices in Turkey were reported to be burying with lime and incineration. Although incineration stood out as a better option in terms of environmental and public health, it produced air pollutants such as dioxin, furan and co-planar PCBs as a result of incomplete burning of plastics. Consequently three options, namely converter, autoclave, and ozonator technologies were investigated for economic feasibility in the medical waste treatment field. ozonator technology was concluded to be the economically best option.

Effect of column bleed on trueness of determination of trace levels of dibenzofuranes (PCDD/F) and biphenyls (PCB) by gas chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) was studied. As a result of extensive bleed of an arylenesiloxane capillary column, fluctuations of abundance ratios of monitored ions were observed, making exact determination of target analytes impossible. These effects were observed on food samples as well as on pure standard mixtures. The column bleed affected the abundance ratios of PCDD/F and PCB within the range of 13–328 pg of target analyte/mL, and higher levels of analytes remained intact. An analysis of diluted calibration mixtures is recommended as a tool for detection of column bleed.
