Arm-Z to koncepcja hiper-redundantnego manipulatora robotycznego składającego się z identycznych modułów o jednym stopniu swobody (1-DOF) i realizującego dowolne ruchy końcówką w przestrzeni roboczej.

Arm-Z is a concept of a hyper-redundant robotic manipulator composed of congruent modules with one degree of freedom (1-DOF) each. The end-effector of Arm-Z is capable of performing any movements in the workspace. The two main advantages of Arm-Z are: economic (due to the potential mass production of the modules) and robustness (since the broken modules can be easily replaced). On the other hand, controlling such a highly non-linear system is much more difficult than a typical industrial manipulator and requires the use of appropriate optimization techniques. This paper presents the preliminary results of the implementation of an algorithm based on the simple gradient method for finding the transition trajectory between the given states of Arm-Z. An example task for the manipulator is presented: Arm-Z is to safely enter the workspace, inspect the five points given, and safely leave the workspace. This experiment is a three-dimensional version of the previously implemented two-dimensional inspection.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań nieniszczących fibrobetonu z dodatkiem włókien stalowych wytworzonego na bazie piasków odpadowych. Belki fibrobetonowe o różnej zawartości włókien stalowych poddane były dwóm rodzajom drgań własnych: drganiom skrętnym i giętnym. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych testów i analizy Fouriera, wyznaczono częstotliwości tych drgań. Posłużyły one do określania dynamicznego modułu sprężystości, dynamicznego modułu odkształcenia postaciowego oraz dynamicznego współczynnika Poissona.

The article presents the results of non-destructive testing of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) based on waste sand. Fiber concrete beams with different steel fiber content were subjected to two types of free vibrations: torsional and flexural vibrations. Based on the tests and Fourier analysis, the frequencies of these vibrations were determined. They were used to determine the dynamic modulus of elasticity (Young’s modulus), the dynamic shear modulus (modulus of rigidity) and the dynamic Poisson’s ratio. In the next stage, the influence of steel fibers on these parameters was determined. The tests have shown that the addition of steel fibers increases the value of dynamic modulus of elasticity and the dynamic shear modulus up to a certain critical fiber content, beyond which the values of these moduli decrease; moreover, steel fibers do not affect the value of the dynamic Poisson’s ratio.
This paper presents the concept of hierarchical extremely modular systems (EMS). The biology-inspired nomenclature, genetic encoding, and operations for this class of structures are introduced and illustrated with various examples. Four mutation types are introduced and briefly analyzed. A relatively good convergence of the evolution strategy-based algorithm applied for optimization of EMS is shown.

The article describes the examination of the internal structure of concrete reinforced with steel fibers using two non-destructive measurement techniques: a method using ultrasonic waves and a method using electromagnetic induction. The ultrasonic method allowed for the determination of material defects resulting from the non-uniform distribution of fibers in the space of the tested sample bodies. The method using electromagnetic induction allowed for the identification of fiber content. Research has shown that fiber concrete, characterized by a relatively high content of steel fibers (above 1.5% by volume), is susceptible to the formation of material discontinuities in its internal structure. This phenomenon occurs to a very small extent in concrete with steel fiber content below 1.5%.
W artykule przedstawiono kilka koncepcji kinetycznych obiektów małej architektury opartych na Arm-Z: spiralną kolumnę o regulowanej wysokości, system nadążania słonecznego, kinetyczną rzeźbę bioniczną i kinetyczny zraszacz/fontannę. Każdy moduł jest wyposażony w zestaw cylindrycznych i stożkowych kół zębatych z zębami prostymi o profilu spiralnym (do połączeń miedzy modułami).

Arm-Z is a conceptual hyperredundant robotic manipulator composed on linearly joined number of identical modules. Each of them has one-degree-of-freedom (1-DOF) - the relative twist. Since modules are congruent, Arm-Z presents potential economical advantages and enhanced robustness. The modules can be mass produced and easily replaceable. The control of Arm-Z, however, is difficult and not intuitive. Therefore it most often requires the use of computational intelligence techniques. This article presents selected concepts for kinetic street furniture based on Arm-Z: a helical column of adjustable height, a sun tracking shade or solar energy harvesting device, bio-mimicing sculpture, sprinkler or fountain. All these ideas are based on low-tech approach. For this purpose, the initial unit in the chain is fixed to the solid foundation. For simplicity, the drive is applied directly to the first unit and transferred by the means of internal gears to the following modules. All of them are equipped with a set of cylindrical and bevel gears with straight teeth with involute profile (for connecting the modules).

The article presents a research program aimed at preliminary determination of the potential of iPAD-LiDAR technology in the inventory of building structures. The authors focused on the use of commercially available devices (mobile phones and tablets) equipped with a LiDAR sensor. Such devices can be treated as low-cost measuring devices and used for engineering measurements. The first possible area of use of the devices discussed is broadly understood construction inventories, which, when performed using traditional methods, always involve a large amount of work. The automation of this process and the quality and quantity of data obtained during the inventory create a completely new technical reality and related measurement and diagnostic possibilities.
Arm-Z is a concept of a hyper-redundant manipulator based on linearly joined sequence of congruent modules by oblique swivel joint mechanism. Each module has one degree of freedom only, namely a twist relative to the previous module in the sequence. Although the concept of this type of manipulator is relatively old and simple, its control is very difficult an nonintuitive, which results in a limited use in industrial practice. This paper presents a simple simulation of Arm-Z in Mathematica programming environment which demonstrates a few simple but potentially useful movements.

Arm-Z to koncepcja hiperredundantnego manipulatora robotycznego składającego się z przystających modułów o jednym stopniu swobody (1-DOF) i realizującego (prawie) dowolne ruchy w przestrzeni. Mimo to, prezentowane podejście jest racjonalne, zważywszy powszechną dostępność wielkich mocy obliczeniowych w kontraście z wysokimi kosztami i „delikatnością” niestandardowych rozwiązań i urządzeń. W artykule nakreślono ogólną koncepcję manipulatora Arm-Z i zaprezentowano wstępne prace zmierzające do wykonania prototypu.

Arm-Z is a concept of a robotic manipulator comprised of linearly joined congruent modules with possibility of relative twist (1 DOF). The advantages of Arm-Z are: economization (mass-production) and robustness (modules which failed can be replaced, also if some fail the system can perform certain tasks). Non-intuitive and difficult control are the disadvantages of Arm-Z. In other words, the combination of non-trivial module shape with forming of practical modular structures and their control (from state A to B) is computationally expensive. However, due to availability of modern computational power, proposed here approach is rational and competitive, especially considering the high cost and sensitivity of non-standard solutions. This paper outlines the general concept of Arm-Z manipulator and presents preliminary work towards making a proof-of-the-concept prototype.
This paper presents a concept of an extremely simple planar manipulator composed of 24 congruent modules. Each module has only two possible discrete positions in relation to the previous module: left (-π/6) or right (π/6). However, despite its conceptual simplicity, this manipulator can perform relatively demanding tasks, for example as an inspection device. The manipulator is placed in an experimental environment, and the goal is to place its tip in close proximity to five given points without collisions. Despite the constraints of its motion, the manipulator effectively “crawls” inside the working space and visits assigned points. The control of the manipulator is executed by manual placing to desired configurations and interpolating the intermediate transitions. The preliminary results are promising and show that for certain practical types of tasks, the functionality and precision of this extremely simple manipulator could be sufficient, e.g., visual inspection, provision of survival supplies, placing of explosives, etc.
Extremely Modular Systems (EMSs) are comprised of as few types of modules as possibleand allow creating structurally sound free-form structures that are not constrained bya regular tessellation of space. Truss-Z is the first EMS introduced, and its purpose isto create free-form pedestrian ramps and ramp networks in any given environment. Thispaper presents an overview of various multi-objective optimization methods applied toTruss-Z structures.
