This article presents the results of a preliminary study of concrete samples with pine chips: the search for the optimum proportion of concrete mixture and waste in the mix, its workability, and the mortar’s bending and compressive strength. By building on the properties of the concrete mix, which reaches its maximum strength value with time, the preparation time of plates is reduced by the pressing and drying process. The effect of the percentage of chips in the mix and the effect of chip fraction on mortar strength - bending test and stretching test are used. The research is conducted to determine the possibility of reusing wood waste in fibre-cement composites for construction applications. Depending on the chip fraction, they gained positive characteristics, the beam with a finer fraction achieved greater strength, similar to a concrete beam. Unground chips, on the other hand, maintained the bond, which did not occur in the finer fraction.

Green concrete refers to concrete incorporating waste materials to reduce environmental impact and consumption of natural resources. This study investigated a novel ultra-lightweight green concrete in which 100% of the aggregate skeleton was composed of sintered fly ash aggregate (Certyd) and wood waste (sawdust and wood chips), partially replacing natural fine and coarse aggregates. The research aimed to evaluate how varying proportions of these waste materials affect key properties and to identify mixtures that balance low density, strength and water absorption. An experimental programme with a fixed CEM I 42.5R Portland cement content (400 kg/m³) and a constant total water content was designed using a two-factor central composite design (fine fraction balance X; coarse fraction balance Y) and second-order response surface regression. Fine aggregate was partially or fully replaced by fine Certyd (0–2 mm) and sawdust (0–2 mm), while coarse aggregate was replaced by coarse Certyd (4–16 mm) and wood chips (2–20 mm). Wood aggregates were pre-treated (mineralised) with aluminium sulfate and hydrated lime to improve compatibility with cement. After ambient air-dry curing, 28-day compressive strength, oven-dry bulk density and 24 h water absorption were measured and analysed. The composites achieved densities of 651–1031 kg/m³, compressive strengths of 1.8–7.3 MPa and water absorption of 25.6–39.8%. The best-performing mixture reached 7.26 MPa at a density of 1031 kg/m³ and 25.6% absorption, corresponding to a high share of mineralised sawdust and a low share of coarse wood chips. Quadratic response surface models for strength, density and absorption showed good statistical adequacy (R² ≈ 0.63–0.64; p < 0.001), confirming the dominant influence of the coarse-phase factor (Y) and the mainly curvature-type effect of the fine-phase factor (X). These model-based findings define a quantitative performance window for dual-waste, ultra-lightweight concretes and provide a tool for preliminary mix optimisation. The results indicate that, although strength remains below that of purely mineral lightweight concretes, the proposed material is competitive within the family of wood-modified lightweight composites and is suitable for non-structural or semi-structural insulating elements that prioritise low density and high waste utilisation.

W niniejszej pracy zbadano nowy, ultralekki zielony beton, w którym 100% szkieletu kruszywowego stanowiło spiekane kruszywo z popiołów lotnych (Certyd) oraz odpady drzewne (trociny i wióry drzewne), częściowo zastępujące naturalne kruszywa drobne i grube. Celem badań była ocena, w jaki sposób zróżnicowane udziały tych materiałów odpadowych wpływają na kluczowe właściwości betonu oraz identyfikacja mieszanek zapewniających kompromis pomiędzy małą gęstością, wysoką wytrzymałością i małą nasiąkliwością kompozytów. Program badań eksperymentalnych z ustaloną zawartością cementu portlandzkiego CEM I 42,5R (400 kg/m³) oraz stałą ilością wody zarobowej zaprojektowano w oparciu o dwuczynnikowy centralny plan kompozycyjny (równowaga frakcji drobnej X; równowaga frakcji grubej Y) oraz regresję. Kruszywo drobne zostało częściowo lub całkowicie zastąpione przez drobny Certyd (0–2 mm) i trociny (0–2 mm), natomiast kruszywo grube zastąpiono przez gruby Certyd (4–16 mm) i wióry drzewne (2–20 mm). Kruszywa drzewne poddano wstępnej obróbce (mineralizacji) z użyciem siarczanu glinu i wapna hydratyzowanego w celu poprawy ich kompatybilności z zaczynem cementowym.

Environmental issues have become an important consideration to be included in business operations. One of the main environmental problems in the wood industry is the high production of wood waste and increasing scarcity and cost of raw materials. For this reason, companies need to utilize wood waste to reduce material costs and, at the same time, reduce the impact of waste on the environment. Converting wood waste into products that can be sold will increase its economic value. This research aims to identify the types of waste from a furniture company and reduce waste by designing various products made from wood waste. Wood chips are wood waste that have the potential to be reused. Waste wood chips from the materials station can be used to create bedside table products. The bedside table was chosen because of its high selling price, and the company could make it with its existing resources. Apart from that, the company still needs to expand its variety of bedside tables. The bedside table was designed using the TRIZEE method. TRIZEE is a method that combines eco-efficiency with 40 TRIZ principles, which can reduce environmental impacts in alignment with company goals. The design process resulted in 4 bedside table variations. Production capacity is estimated to produce 56 bedside tables per month. If scrap waste is successfully used as bedside table material. Apart from saving raw materials, the company will be able to reduce wood waste and gain greater profits from waste utilization.

The impact of the share of waste lignocellulosic biomass from apple orchards on the susceptibility to drilling of produced particle boards. Every year, care cuts are carried out in the orchards, which result in a significant amount of waste. This waste is a valuable source of lignocellulosic material for particleboards production. As part of this study, the influence of the share of waste apple wood on the susceptibility to drilling of particleboards was investigated. Three-layer particle boards with share of lignocellulosic waste biomass from apple orchards (0%, 25%, 50% and 75%) and density level at 650 kg/m3 and 550 kg/m3 were made. The particleboards were examined for the axial force and torque that occurs during drilling. The highest value of the axial force during drilling was notice for particleboard without apple wood and a density of 650 kg/m3 . While the lowest axial force during drilling was recorded for particleboard with 50% share of apple wood and density of 550 kg/m3 . The obtained results allow to conclude that density of the produced particleboards and the share of apple wood waste have a statistically significant effect on the axial force during drilling. While the share of apple wood do not statistically affect the torque during drilling. In the case of the pressing unit pressure used in the particleboards production process, no statistically significant influence on the axial force and torque during drilling was found.

Smart design upcycling of post-production display panels into new creative materials to support the sustainable development of a circular economy in the furniture industry. The economy is currently transforming from a linear economy to a circular economy. This is increasingly supported by policy, legislation, industry, and academia. A circular economy means more efficient management of renewable natural resources, which has implications for businesses’ bioeconomies, as expressed in the sustainable development goals of the United Nations’ 2023 Agenda. Our study contributes to solving a research gap by seeking to answer several questions: How can post-production residues be used to improve a company’s bioeconomy? Can they bring profit to a company while saving natural wood? Is upcycling using the smart design of post-production a helpful solution for material and cost savings in the bioeconomy? The outcome of our study is twofold. From a creative input perspective, we show the creative possibilities of upcycling production residues. For business models, we refine the conceptualisation of a sustainable SME circular bioeconomy through the profit gained from such a product solution. Based on our research, we present conclusions and suggestions for small and medium-sized enterprises, scientists, designers, and technologists to help the furniture industry transition from a linear economy to a sustainable circular economy. This promotes company profitability and growth and helps to save natural wood.

Organic wood waste (sawdust, shavings, pieces of wood and bark), is widely used as a secondary raw material and, after composting, for soil fertilisation and substrate production in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, urban landscaping and rehabilitation of degraded land. However, problematic to process is wood waste that is very dirty with soil. They have limited calorific value and cannot be used in the R10 recovery process of land treatment benefiting agriculture or improving the environment. However, the morphological composition of these wastes indicates that they have good properties and can be used for agricultural use and for the reclamation of degraded land. The research involved wood waste with the code 03 01 99 (other unspecified waste from wood processing and the production of panels and furniture) generated during the preparation of deciduous tree logs for the veneer production process, and ashes from the burning of wood waste generated in the veneer production factory. The aim of the study was to assess the chemical composition of these wastes and the possibility of their agricultural use. In the samples of wood waste and ashes there was determined: pH; chlorines content; conductivity; hydrolytic acidity; content of micro and macroelements and heavy metals. The morphological composition of the waste is dominated by sawdust, with a smaller share of shavings, bark and earth parts, and a small addition of pieces of wood of various sizes. It is rich in easily bioavailble as well as total macroelements and is not contaminated with heavy metals. Analyzed wood waste has deacidifying properties, high sorption and buffering capacity. Studies have shown that the wood waste produced at the veneer factory, can be used as an organic fertiliser, a component of other organic fertilisers, for soil mulching, horticultural substrate and soil and land reclamation. The ash obtained from burning wood is strongly alkaline and rich in alkaline cations, mainly Ca, Mg and K. It is not contaminated with heavy metals. The ash can be used for soil deacidification and fertilization, especially for soil reclamation. The waste from the heap can be used as an organic fertilizer, a component of other organic fertilizers, for mulching soils and as a gardening substrate. However, the possibilities for non-agricultural (e.g.: for the production of pallet, particle board) use are limited due to the high proportion of earthy parts.

Hollow Lightweight Concrete (HLC) beams are gaining popularity due to low cost and low weight as compared with the Solid Lightweight Concrete (SLC) beams. HLC and SLC beams decrease in weight, without losing strength and durability. Flexural and shear behavior of reinforced HLC and SLC beams made with sawdust under two-point load is investigated in this study. The ultimate deformation efficiency and shear resistant mechanism of HLC beams are discussed experimentally and compared with other SLC beams. The beams, tested in this research, are rectangular. Beams were designed and constructed as 12 * 23 * 100 cm. Six concrete beam models were prepared including three SLC beams without the hollow and the other three HLC beams poured hollow 50 * 7.5 cm throughout the all beam of 100 cm. All beams were split according to the distance between vertical stirrups, these stirrups were divided into three specimens 45, 13, and 6 cm. By analyzing six experimental test beams, in this research, investigated the effect of diverse factors on the shear of beams. On comparison with normal concrete beams, this work describes the failure of mechanism, process, and ductility. The first crack loads, ultimate loads, load-deflection behavior, crack patterns and shapes of failure were investigated in this study. The experimental results show the ultimate performance of HLC beams are pure shear and controlled by yielding tension and compression steel bars. Also, it is found that the measured size and configuration of the hollow opening had an effect on the load-carry capacity and mid-span deflection of HLC beams. Thus, the design and construction details of beams can be additionally customized to reduce the total cost and weight of the HLC beams.

Management of post-production wood waste in the aspect of circular economy. Sustainable resource management involves turning waste into resources. The estimation of various waste streams and their potential use as secondary raw materials underlies the circular economy. The management of wood waste in terms of the Circular Economy should assume material use of this waste before energy use. One of the possibilities of material management of this waste is the use of biological treatment through composting. Input materials for the composting process should have technological and physical-chemical characteristics, respectively. The aim of this study was to characterize the wood raw material (wood waste as a by-product) and qualify it for the composting process on the basis of its composition. Based on the literature research, it was found that there is possibility of using these wastes for management through biological disposal. The obtained composts from wood waste can be used as a raw material to supply the soil with humic substances and mineral compounds.

Dojrzałe komposty z odpadów drzewnych powinny znaleźć przyrodnicze zastosowanie do zasilania gleby w substancje humusowe i związki mineralne.

The by-products of wood sawdust and wood fiber are considered to be waste material. It is utilized in the construction of buildings in the form of sawdust concrete or wood fiber concrete. It is used to make lightweight concrete and possesses heat transfer of a long duration. In this study, wood concrete was made at eleven different mix proportions of cement to wood waste by weight, to produce a lightweight concrete aggregate that has the density 1508-2122 kg/m3. The experimental work consists of 330 concrete specimens as 99 cubes (150 * 150 * 150) mm, 165 cylinders (150 * 300) mm, 33 prisms (50 * 100 * 200) mm, and 33 prisms (100 * 100 * 500) mm. Mechanical and thermal properties such as stiffness, workability, compressive strength, static elasticity modulus, flexural forces, splitting tensile strength and density were examined in the specimens after 28 days of 20 oC curing. Also, compressive strength was investigated at 7 and 14 days of curing at 20 oC. The basic observation of the results shows the values with the limitations of ACI and ASTM. Moreover, it is the perfect way to reduce solid wood waste and produce lightweight concrete to be used in industrial construction. It was found that with the increase in the quantity of wood waste, the strength decreased; however, in terms of workability and concrete with a higher quantity of wood waste held very well. Lightweight concrete aggregate is around 25 percent lighter in dead load than standard concrete. Given all the physical and mechanical properties, the study finds that wood concrete can be used in the construction of buildings.

Processing of wood and composite wood materials contributes to the creation of considerable amounts of production residues. These materials are potential energy sources. However, the content of synthetic substances (including binding and finishing agents) may cause the emission of harmful substances during the thermal destruction of such materials. Therefore, to derive benefit from waste from wood-based materials, it is necessary to obtain information on its physical and chemical properties (especially its fuel properties). Hitherto, literature reports say little of those properties. The aim of this study was to determine the basic fuel properties of residues from the industrial processing of composite wood materials (such as particleboards, fibreboards and plywood) and to assess their suitability for biofuel production. Four groups of wood-based materials were tested:. particleboards (standard boards and OSBs), fibreboards (MDF, HDF, CDF and SB), layer materials (plywood and LVL), and wood materials being a combination of the other groups (double T-bars). The total moisture content, ash content, elementary composition (C, H, N, S, Cl), trace element content (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) and gross calorific value were determined, and the net calorific value was calculated. The results showed that the tested wood materials had favourable fuel properties and could be used in place of raw wood as an energy source.

As it is known active carbons are universal sorbents allowing to solve a wide range of industrial tasks, problems of environmental protection and a human health. New perspective raw material for active carbons production (AC) is different plant wastes including waste wood, the volume of which is constantly increasing, and the only way of their dsposal is incineration. In recent years we developed three main new technologies of AC on base of plant raw materials and showed the prospects of their use in environmental technologies. We made examples of developing new active carbons and their implementation in practice of the environmental technologies. In particular, it is shown to be effective in cleaning the exhaust air, water treatment, soil rehabilitation and other fields.

This paper presents the melting characteristics of ash from different residual forest biomass - wood pellets, oak chips, coniferous bark, deciduous tree bark, wet sawdust and non-sorted blueberries. The melting temperatures of ash in reducing and oxidizing atmospheres were similar and did not differ by more than 10°C to 30°C. These values were within a range of 1230°C to 1330°C, and for the blueberry it was more than 1500°C. Only ash pellets melted in a reducing atmosphere at a temperature of 1280°C, and in an oxidizing temperature at 1430°C. To compare, determination tests were also performed for ash from “agro” biomass waste. Ash melting temperatures for biomass composites of agricultural origin (made in an oxidizing atmosphere), turned out to be lower than the temperatures of ash from wood biomass. In the results of the presented elemental analysis, the share of chlorine and sulphur and the impact S/Cl on high temperature corrosion processes were indicated. On the basis of the results for all the tested types of biomass, the calculated ratio S/Cl was below the value of 2.0. This means that the tested biofuels do not meet the safe use of biofuels detailed in the energy sector criterium (from the point of view of boiler operation).

This paper presents the results of the gasification of sawmill waste – pine sawdust, deciduous sawdust, bark pine, wet sawdust and wood pellets. The moisture content of the waste in the test varied from 9 to 48%. The higher the moisture of biofuels, the lower the quality of the energy. This was confirmed by the results of the fuel property analysis, which are presented in the paper. The wood biomass gasification process was carried out in a compact bed gasifier with a power of 5 kW. The gasifying factor was the air fed to the bed through a grid sieve from the bottom of the gasifier. The research showed that the shares of flammable components in the resulting gas generator varied, resulting in differing calorific contents. Studies have shown that the gasification of wood biomass (even with a large moisture load, allows it to be transformed into a low-calorie fuel gas. The gasification of wood waste with a moisture content level of 9-11% only resulted in a larger share of combustible components in the gas generator. In the case of the pellets, the syngas contained 30% carbon monoxide, 12% methane and 8% hydrogen.
