The article evaluates the sustainability of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) using an original multicriteria assessment encompassing ecology, economics, social perception, aggregate quality, and durability. The social perception module was delineated in detail. RAC was compared with natural aggregate concrete (NAC), and hybrid mixes emerged as the optimal choice. The analysis of concrete utility uses a multicriteria assessment as a comparative tool to systematise the variants.

Recycled construction aggregates represent a wide range of aggregates used in road engineering and are characterised by relatively high variability in the properties tested even within the same type of raw material used for its production. The properties laid down in specific regulations concerning applications do not reflect the specific characteristics of recycled aggregates. Being aggregates that are inherently multi-component or formed by mixing different raw materials and crushable, they require expanded testing and evaluation methods for their classification for road engineering applications. The important strength- and durability-related properties of these aggregates are grading stability, stability of load-bearing capacity, and reinforcement ratio. The basic element of this paper will be the results of aggregate tests and their analysis in terms of the evaluation of properties resulting from the specificity of aggregates as well as the classification of requirements and performance characteristics used in Polish technical documents. The maximum change in grading makes it possible to pre-classify recycled construction aggregates for specific layers in road pavement construction. On the other hand, the stability of load-bearing capacity expressed through the guaranteed bearing capacity index or reinforcement ratio makes it possible to correctly identify changes in load-bearing capacity in an aggregate in terms of minerals, composition, or chemistry.

The article presents preliminary results of research on the use of recycled plastics (PA, PE, HDPE, PP, PVC, ABS, PET) as a partial replacement for fine gravel in concrete mixes. Grain size distribution, bulk density, and physico-mechanical properties of concretes with 20 and 40% plastic content were analyzed. The best results were obtained for 20% PVC, which increased compressive strength and reduced water absorption. Other plastics, except PE, showed strength reductions not exceeding 20%. A decrease in density was observed in all variants, which may be beneficial for lightweight concrete applications. These initial findings highlight the potential of PVC as a recycled aggregate for further research on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete.

Unbound aggregates from recycled concrete as weak (crushable) aggregates are subject to intensive changes in grading as a result of compaction. The tests of grading and grading after 5-fold compaction using the Proctor method according to PN-EN 13286-2:2010 [1] were referred to the requirements included in WT-4 2010 [2]. In the analysis of aggregates from recycled concrete, the results of water absorption, frost resistance and loadbearing index tests were also used to assess the changes in grading. The obtained results of the analyses of aggregates from recycled concrete as weak aggregates confirm the dependence of the change in grading on the type of components and grading continuity.

For about a decade, the carbonation of concrete has been viewed as a way to enable the sequestration of carbon dioxide, previously emitted in cement production processes. CO2 sequestration can be intensified by subjecting recycled aggregate to carbonation. The use of such aggregate in the realization of warm foundation slabs, which are a solution in passive and zero‑energy houses, contributes not only to one of the principles of sustainable construction, which is the circularity of building materials, but also to the improvement of the properties of concrete, such as obtaining greater strength comparing to the use of aggregate not subjected to carbonation. The study shows that the strength increased by an average of about 16% and was comparable to that of concrete with natural aggregate. At the same time, the concrete’s water absorption decreased (13 to as much as 30%) as well as the degree of strength loss in the frost resistance test.

The use of recycled aggregate in concrete mixtures represents a significant step toward sustainability in the construction industry. This study focuses on the characteristics and mechanical properties of concrete mixtures in which natural aggregate is replaced with recycled material obtained from construction debris. The main advantages of this approach include the conservation of non-renewable natural resources, the reduction of construction waste, contribution to the circular economy, and the reduction of the carbon footprint. The research analyzes two variations of concrete mixtures with recycled aggregate—the first replacing only the coarse fraction up to 50%, and the second with a full 100% replacement of both coarse and fine fractions. The study compares compressive strength, bulk density, and modulus of elasticity, with results indicating that a higher proportion of recycled aggregate leads to lower strength and elasticity values. Laboratory tests demonstrated a gradual increase in strength over time, with the maximum achievable strength classes being C30/37 for a 50% replacement and C20/25 for a 100% replacement. Concrete mixtures with recycled aggregate are particularly suitable for sub-base layers, foundations, and infill structures. However, their application is limited in heavily loaded or chemically aggressive environments. The findings of this study suggest that recycled aggregate has the potential to become a viable alternative to natural materials in specific applications. To further expand its usability, additional testing is required, particularly regarding freeze-thaw resistance and chemical durability. The research supports the role of recycled aggregates in sustainable construction while highlighting areas for further development.

The growing demand for sustainable construction indicates the need for research into eco-friendly alternatives to traditional materials. This review analyses recent advances in prefabricated wall panels made from environmentally friendly and recycled materials, focusing on their structural, thermal, and environmental properties. The studies cover six groups of materials: recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), fly ash, agricultural waste, industrial by-products, and bio-based and natural fibres. The results confirm that these materials can achieve comparable mechanical strength while offering a lower carbon footprint, improved thermal insulation, and reduced costs. The findings demonstrate that integrating these materials with prefabrication technologies can significantly support sustainable construction without compromising durability or functionality.

The escalating demand for infrastructure in rapidly urbanizing regions has intensified the depletion of natural resources and amplified industrial waste generation. This dual impact not only accelerates global warming but also exacerbates environmental degradation through increased carbon emissions. In response, this study explores a sustainable alternative by incorporating industrial by-products and recycled aggregates into geopolymer concrete (GPC) production. Specifically, cement was partially substituted with industrial waste materials – 15% pozzolanic by-product and varying percentages (0–50%) of reactive alkaline residue – alongside a consistent 25% replacement of natural coarse aggregate with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). The fresh and hardened properties of the resulting GPC were assessed through slump and compressive strength tests. Results indicated that increasing the proportion of alkaline residue adversely affected workability, while compressive strength exhibited significant enhancement, reaching up to 136 MPa compared to the baseline 75 MPa. These findings highlight the potential of geopolymer concrete utilizing secondary raw materials as a cost-efficient and environmentally conscious construction material. The use of such by-products not only mitigates solid waste accumulation but also contributes positively to the circular economy and low-carbon development strategies.

This article presents the results of a study on the properties of geopolymer composites containing recycled aggregate from cement concrete. The effect of recycled aggregate content on the shrinkage, compressive strength and absorbability of the material was analyzed. The results showed that an increase in the proportion of recycled aggregate leads to an increase in shrinkage and absorbability and a decrease in the mechanical strength of the composite. Nevertheless, the use of recycled aggregates is in line with the principles of a closed-loop economy. The need to modify the composition of the geopolymer mixture to improve the physical-mechanical parameters of the composites was also pointed out.

Sustainable building projects has become increasingly important in recent years. To improve the circulation of materials in the construction sector, circular economy-inspired actions have been taken into account for CDW management The article investigates the possibility of using recycled aggregate as a reservoir of water for internal curing of concrete, in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and circular economy. The experiment consisted of four different curing scenarios and different proportions of recycled aggregate. The experiment measured the following properties: compressive strength, density, porosity, and SEM analysis of the interfacial transition zone between the aggregate and the cement paste. The analysis revealed that substituting ten percent of natural aggregate with recycled aggregate can shorten the external water curing time required for the concrete without affecting its final strength adversely. This solution also does not cause a significant increase in the porosity of concrete or a deterioration in the quality of the interfacial transition zone.

Zrównoważone budownictwo staje się coraz ważniejsze w ostatnich latach. Aby poprawić obieg materiałów w sektorze budowlanym, podjęto działania inspirowane gospodarką o obiegu zamkniętym uwzględniane w zarządzaniu odpadami klasyfikowanymi jako budowlane i rozbiórkowe.

Every day, construction and demolition waste is generated worldwide. As the road business and traffic grow, construction materials have evolved to include more unorthodox features. Road construction and maintenance rely significantly on quarried aggregates, resulting in high resource extraction demands. There is a trend toward employing secondary (recycled) materials rather than primary (virgin) ones to address this. This transformation requires the use of a variety of secondary and tertiary components, including waste byproducts. Numerous studies have been conducted to study and analyze the suitability and practical application of recycled materials in the field. Some recycled materials have better qualities than others, proving satisfactory performance in real-world circumstances. However, concerns about their incorporation persist, based on laboratory research and field observations. These concerns emphasize the necessity for more in-depth research to address potential difficulties. It is claimed that using recycled and tertiary materials in road construction can greatly help to save natural resources. This study predicts the attributes of selected materials, such as gradation, water absorption, maximum dry density, impact value, flakiness, and elongation, to establish their appropriateness for the production of Granular Sub-base (GSB) and Wet Mix Macadam (WMM).

W artykule omówiono badania nad zastosowaniem kruszywa recyklingowego w postaci regranulatu polipropylenowego (PP) w druku 3D kompozytów cementowych.

The paper discusses research on the use of recycled aggregate in the form of polypropylene (PP) regranulate in 3D printing of cement composites. The focus was on analyzing the impact of replacing natural aggregate with PP regranulate on the mechanical and rheological properties of the cement-based composite. Tests were conducted to assess the flexural and compressive strength of samples cured under standard conditions and exposed to a temperature of 300°C. The study tested various levels of natural aggregate replacement with PP regranulate (10%, 30%, 50%) in the cement mixture. It was found that replacing natural aggregate with PP regranulate resulted in a reduction in compressive and flexural strength by up to 66.36% for samples stored under standard conditions, and by up to 80.11% for samples exposed to 300°C. Additionally, destructive testing was performed on trusses made using 3D printing technology for a mix with 10% replacement of natural aggregate by PP regranulate and a reference mix. The tests showed that in the printed truss structure, where tensile strength was the failure criterion, the reduction in strength due to the use of PP regranulate was not statistically significant compared to the reference mix.

Reusing waste materials such as construction and demolition waste is an environmentally significant task. This article aims to improvethe qualityof recycled aggregates afterthe demolitionof concrete structures. Two methods, mechanical cleaning and impregnation, were explored to enhance the quality of coarse aggregates. The findings indicate that mechanical cleaning is more effective than soaking in a sodiumsilicate solution. The compressive strengthof concrete made withmechanically cleanedrecycled aggregates was 2.3 times greater than that of concrete made withuntreated rubble. Concrete with impregnatedrubble had a compressive strength 1.1 timesgreater than that of concretewith untreated aggregates.Infraredspectroscopy was used to studythe microstructure, revealing that the type of treatment does not influence the quantity of portlanditeand ettringite in hydrated cement. However, the treatment of recycled aggregates alters the interactionin the gel portion of cement hydrationproducts.Concrete with aggregates treated by sodium silicatehas more aluminate components.Additionally, there is a shiftof the bands assignedto Si-Ostretching to higherwave numbers (from 995 cm–1 to 1088 cm–1), which can be attributed to the formation of calcium-silicate-hydrate gel with a lower calcium/silicon ratio.

Permeable concrete has the characteristics of breathability, permeability, and high heat dissipation. To improve its mechanical and frost resistance properties, this study optimized the preparation and performance of permeable concrete by adding materials to improve its performance. The performance analysis validate that epoxy resin owns a filling effect on the pores of permeable concrete. The internal curing agent, high water absorbent resin, has a good water absorption effect. The synergistic effect of these two increases the density and compressive strength of permeable concrete. When the two contents are 0.5%, the maximum compressive strength of modified permeable concrete at 7 and 28 days was 15.62 and 17.97 MPa, respectively. Under the action of freeze-thaw cycles, its mass loss rate show an upward trend By comparison, epoxy resin and high water absorbent resin are beneficial for improving the frost resistance of permeable concrete. The minimum value of relative dynamic modulus of elasticity remains stable at over 80%, and the loss rate of dynamic modulus of elasticity is all below 0.4. However, the influence of epoxy resin and SAP on the mass loss rate is relatively small, and the mass loss of all experimental groups is controlled below 2.5%. The binomial Fourier function model is the best predictive model for permeable concrete under freeze-thaw cycles. This study has positive significance for improving the performance of permeable concrete and maintaining the sustainable development of ecological cities.

Sustainable construction represents a pivotal aspect of contemporary engineering endeavors, which are directed towards the minimization of the detrimental impact of the construction sector on the environment. This is achieved through the efficient utilization of resources and the reduction of waste generation. The study presented an analysis of the mechanical properties of ad hoc reinforced concrete beams made of concrete with recycled and natural aggregate. The objective of this study was to assess the potential of recycled aggregates as a substitute for natural aggregates in reinforced concrete structures, with the aim of contributing to the sustainable development of construction. The experiments compared the behavior of reinforced concrete beams with the same degree of reinforcement but differing in the type of aggregate. The results demonstrated that recycled aggregate beams exhibited lower stiffness and higher deformation under load compared to natural aggregate beams, particularly at loads close to the breaking force. Nevertheless, similar failure modes and cracking patterns were observed in both types of beams, indicating that concrete with recycled aggregate could be employed effectively in specific structural applications.
