This study explored the use of eco-friendly cardboard materials in packaging with an enhanced resistance to mechanical damage during transportation. The aim was to develop, manufacture, and evaluate the mechanical performance of load-bearing packaging structures produced without plastics. The focus was on obtaining materials with sufficient strength and the ability to absorb energy from dynamic loads. The study involved a review of relevant literature and a series of comparative experimental investigations. Two types of newly developed board materials with a hexagonal (honeycomb) core structure were examined. The samples varied in terms of facing material (liners), core cell size, and paper grammage. Mechanical testing assessed flat and edgewise compression strength, as well as energy absorption parameters to evaluate the materials’ capacity to dissipate mechanical energy. Preliminary experiments confirmed the suitability of the developed honeycomb-core cardboard panels for packaging applications, including those requiring high strength and protection of contents. The results provide a basis for the development of predictive models of mechanical behaviour for this class of materials. The test methods developed in this study enabled the determination of the materials’ functional properties and the comparison with results from other laboratories. It was found that both paper grammage and core cell size have a significant impact on mechanical strength and energy absorption capacity, indicating a strong potential for practical application in transport packaging systems requiring enhanced protection.

Content available Comparative friction and wear tests of fire hoses
EN
One of the main operational tasks of fire investigation units is to extinguish fires, which is most often achieved by applying various types of extinguishing agents to the burning material. For firefighting to be effective, it is essential to use appropriate equipment, including fire hoses through which water or water-based solutions are transported. Fire hoses must be resistant to mechanical, thermal, and chemical exposures. In particular, they must withstand abrasion, which can compromise tightness and result in leakage or uncontrolled water jets. Hose webbing typically has a multilayer structure. The outer (surface) layer is exposed to abrasion from sliding friction in contact with rough surfaces, sometimes containing abrasive particles. Abrasion against sharp edges occurs less frequently due to safety features such as fire hose saddles. Pilot laboratory tests were carried out on the hose webbing of four fire hose models to determine the coefficient of friction and linear wear. Additionally, observations were made on the wear mechanisms affecting the hose webbing surfaces.

The paper presents the results of contact strength and tribological property tests of spare parts made of a popular resin using a 3D DLP printing technology. Two printer models by the same manufacturer were used in the study. The post-processing technique, which shapes the final functional properties, was diversified. Surface performance properties were compared, i.e. Shore hardness, indentation hardness, Martens hardness, elastic modulus, and parameters related to surface creep and relaxation. Tribological durability in rotary motion and tribological wear in reciprocating linear motion were also evaluated using micro- and nanotribometers. This was followed by surface analyses of the friction track of the analysed materials using microscopic methods: a scanning electron microscope, a WLI interferometric microscope, and an optical microscope. The results were statistically processed and the relationship between the parameters determined in the indentation test was determined.

The purpose of the article was to analyse the reliability, maintainability, and availability estimates of firefighting and rescue engines. Analysing the reliability parameters of heavy firefighting and rescue vehicles over time requires knowledge of their failures. In this article, failure data from the six years of maintenance of ten heavy firefighting and rescue vehicles from ten were analysed in relation to two main subsystems. Reliability analysis was performed and the best-fit distribution was found, with the parameters calculated. For both subsystems, the chassis combined with the cabin and the superstructure, the 2P-Weibull distributionwas identified as the most suitable fit. The availability and maintenance indicators for each vehicle and the individual subsystems were calculated. It was clearly defined that there exists a significant difference between the two subsystems analysed in terms of failure characteristics, as well as maintainability and availability parameters.

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of environmental conditions on changes in the mechanical properties of personal protective equipment (PPE). The paper includes a review of the literature on the subject as well as results of own research. The focus was on ageing, abrasion and service conditions. In addition, the effect of direct exposure of the equipment to harmful and hazardous factors specific to the operating environment was considered. The following personal protective equipment (and/or materials used in their manufacture) was reviewed: special clothing, firefighter boots and firefighter helmet. Ageing processes, abrasion and operating conditions degrade the mechanical properties of PPE. The rate of degradation varies depending on the material used. Direct exposure to a humid environment degrades the properties of materials used in the manufacture of firefighter helmets. The strength of the materials used in the manufacture of head protection and firefighter’s boots decreases when exposed to elevated temperatures. In contrast, the shock absorption capacity of whole helmets when exposed to elevated and high temperatures with low impact energy becomes improved. The puncture resistance of firefighter boots under reduced temperature exposure was found to be higher.

A firefighter's helmet is used as a basic personal protective equipment item. The purpose of the helmet is to absorb a part of mechanical impact acting towards the rescuer's cervical spine, which may lead to its injury. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of changes in the helmet design on the threshold passive forces transferred to the firefighter's cervical spine. The test subjects were firefighter’s helmets compliant with the European standard for helmets used by fire brigades. The study was carried out under model conditions, using special equipment with a head model and an additional force sensor placed under it, where the cervical spine is anatomically located. The central impact energy was assumed to be 60 J. A semi-spherically ended beater was used. The experimentally determined force-displacement characteristics revealed two phases of force increase. Using polyurethane foam as a cushioning insert instead of the expanded polyester used in older designs reduced values of forces in the first phase of the characteristic. There were many cases where the critical passive force value was exceeded, which would have resulted in the cervical spine injury. Modifications in material selection and component manufacturing technology affect the protective capabilities of firefighter’s helmets and result in their improvement. Nevertheless, helmets that are currently in use are still affected by forces whose values exceed the ones that are considered to be safe for a firefighter.

The paper deals with the issue of mechanical strength of climbing ropes. These ropes are exposed to the influence of exploitation factors both during training and in rescue operations. Among others, they may sustain mechanical, thermal and chemical damage. The study attempted to provide an evaluation of the effect this damage has on the mechanical strength and extensibility of ropes. The tests were carried out in laboratory conditions, and the courses of force in the function of deformation and impact of force on deformation were recorded. An unfavourable influence of some types of damage on the strength and extensibility of ropes was demonstrated. Mechanical and thermal stresses mainly cause damage to the rope sheath. Their effect on endurance is similar. The remaining strength of the rope is slightly above the minimum allowable tensile strength. On the other hand, the chemical treatment did not cause a noticeable decrease in the rope’s strength.

Tire wear and damage tests have been carried out on a sample of 45 trucks in Warsaw. The aim of the research was to assess the damageability and to determine the qualitative characteristics of typical operational damage to the truck tires. A linear measurement of the tread height and organoleptic assessment of the form of damage were used. Three groups of vehicles were analysed: trucks with an integrated body, used in severe conditions on short routes - category I; tractor-semi-trailer combinations, used in conditions of heavy loads on intercity routes - category II; truck-trailer combinations, used with moderate load on intercity routes, long - category III. It has been shown that the most common types of damage are: excessive tread wear, mechanical cut of the tread and uneven tread wear (35%, 30%, 24% of all tested tires, respectively). It was shown that tires in vehicles of categories I and II are distinguished by high damageability (30.5% and 28.6%, respectively), with tread cut damage prevailing in the first group, and excessive tread wear in the second group. The damageability of vehicles in the third group was more than two times lower.

The present work investigated the water absorption of thermoplastic matrix composites and their effect on tribological behaviour. Four thermoplastic composites were researched based on Polyamide 6 and Polyamide 66 matrix reinforced with glass fibres. The composites fabricated using the injection moulding technique were immersed in distilled water at room temperature for a water absorption test for 14 days. Dry sliding wear was conducted using a pin-on-disc trbiotester. The coefficient of friction (COF) and the wear rate (K) was determined. The sliding trace was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to reveal the sliding wear mechanism of composites. Studies have shown that polyamide PA6 based composites are less prone to absorb water than PA66 matrix. In addition, the composites richer in fibreglass exhibit lower water absorption. Tribological results indicated that polymer composites showed higher COF and K after water absorption testing. Mean COF and K were in the range of 0.071÷0.321 and 2.51∙10-6÷1.81∙10-4 mm3N-1m-1, respectively. Wear traces SEM analysis revealed that untreated samples are characterized by less intense abrasive and adhesive wear mode than the hydrated polymers. Besides, the degradation process took place primarily at the polymer matrix-fibreglass interfaces.

The paper presents laboratory tests results of wear in the abrasive mass of cultivator coulters subjected to coated electrode pad welding. In the first stage of the test, one type of electrode was used and a padding weld was applied to the coulter surface in three different shape variants (perpendicular, parallel to the abrasive mass stream and V-shaped). The lowest abrasive wear was obtained for samples with a padding weld deposited perpendicularly to the abrasive mass stream. Therefore, in the second stage of the research, this padding weld shape was selected and made using three different electrodes. Tests of abrasive wear both in the first and the second stage of the experiment were carried out at a distance of 100 km by the "rotating bowl unit" method. Both the direction of the application of the padding weld (shape) and the chemical composition of the electrode used in the pad welding process significantly increased the resistance to abrasive wear compared to coulters whose surface has not been welded.

The biomaterials, which are the subject of this work, are the dental restorative materials classified as light cured polymer matrix ceramic composites or resin based composites. The dental composite materials are needed for the repairment of human teeth. Fillings and other dental applications are exposed to the biomechanical loading in the chewing process. The wear resistance and hardness are important functional properties. Currently, nanofiller composites play an important role among dental composites. The objective of this paper was to study and analyze the friction, mechanical and wear properties of the surface of polymer matrix ceramic filed nanocomposites. Three material groups were used, one commercial composite Filek Z550 (3M ESPE, USA) and two experimental composites Ex-nano(G) and Ex-flow(G). The microindentation tests were conducted on the Micro Combi Tester device (Anton Paar GmbH, Germany). Rotating sliding ball-on-disc friction tests were performed against an alumina ball on 5 N load at 1 Hz in the bath of artificial saliva at 37°C. The linear wear and friction coefficients were evaluated. In the light of the obtained results of contact and friction strength tests, it was found that the performance depends on the production technology of the polymer-ceramic composites. The test results indicate that the share of filler nanoparticles the in experimental composites is advantageous due to the tribological wear.

One of the functions of engine fuels is the lubrication of engine injection equipment components. The elements of the injection system are lubricated only with the fuel used to power the engine; therefore, the lubricity and its impact on the elements of the engine injection system are an important issue. The share of biofuels to power internal combustion engines is constantly increasing, because EU Member States are required to use fuel with the addition of biocomponents to power vehicle engines. These fuels are more ecological compared to petroleum fuels. Therefore, it is also necessary to identify the lubricating properties of these fuels, which can significantly affect wear processes. In order to identify wear indicators, laboratory tests were carried out to determine the lubricating properties of biofuels based on vegetable oils in relation to diesel fuel. Tribological tests were carried out for the ball-disc friction node of 100Cr6 material, which is most often used in the construction of precision pairs of injection equipment. Comparative tests were carried out for samples immersed in a fuel bath on a CSM tribometer. The friction coefficient waveforms as a function of friction distance and sample load were determined. The measured force values indicate a significant impact of the fuel used on the operating conditions and consumption in the kinematic pair being the subject of the work.

Jedną z funkcji paliw silnikowych jest smarowanie elementów aparatury wtryskowej silnika. Elementy układu wtryskowego są smarowane jedynie paliwem służącym do zasilania silnika, dlatego ważną kwestią jest smarność paliwa i jej wpływ na elementy układu wtryskowego silnika. Udział biopaliw do zasilania silników spalinowych ciągle wzrasta, ponieważ państwa członkowskie Unii Europejskiej mają obowiązek stosowania do zasilania silników samochodowych paliwa z dodatkiem biokomponentów. Określono przebiegi współczynnika tarcia w funkcji drogi tarcia i obciążenia próbek. Zmierzone wielkości siły wskazują na istotny wpływ stosowanego paliwa na warunki pracy i zużycie w parze kinematycznej będącej przedmiotem pracy.
