Współczesny sport coraz chętniej adaptuje zaawansowane rozwiązania inżynieryjne w celu zapewnienia transparentności i dynamiki rozgrywek.

Modern sports increasingly adopt advanced engineering solutions to ensure transparency and the dynamic nature of the game. One of the most iconic examples is the vanishing referee spray, introduced on a large scale during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. While to a layperson it is merely a "white line" on the pitch, from a physical chemistry perspective, it is a complex colloidal system with the characteristics of a foam. This article analyzes the mechanisms of stabilization and rapid degradation of this structure, the impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the stadium atmosphere, and highlights contemporary pro-ecological trends, such as the use of bio-surfactants and polypeptides in the design of modern formulations.

This study presents the results of three measurement campaigns (4th, 5th, and 9th July 2024) conducted at a biogas plant to assess odour emissions using both instrumental and sensory methods. Odour concentrations, intensity, hedonic tone, and detection frequency were analysed alongside gas concentrations of hydrogen sulphide (H2S), ammonia (NH3), and total volatile organic compounds (tVOCs). The highest emissions were consistently recorded at the waste sorting area, with peak odour values exceeding 1300 ou/m3 and elevated gas concentrations (up to 0.7 ppm H2S, 4 ppm NH3, and 15 ppm tVOCs). Moderate levels were observed in composting and digestate handling zones, while background and administrative areas exhibited negligible values. Results from electronic noses and gas sensors showed strong agreement with sensory panel evaluations, confirming the dominant role of raw waste handling in odour nuisance. The use of the Odour Air Quality Index (OAQI) enabled an integrated interpretation of multidimensional data. Across all campaigns, it consistently classified the sorting hall as very poor, placed the composting and digestate zones in the moderate band, and clearly captured day-to-day variability driven by wind conditions. These findings underscore the value of combining real-time instrumental monitoring with trained panel assessments to guide odour mitigation strategies in biowaste treatment facilities.

The subject of the research was the adaptation of odor removal technology in the Compact Trickle Bed Bioreactor (CTBB) in the municipal wastewater treatment plant. The research was conducted in a pilot-scale, which allowed a real evaluation of this technology in real conditions and an assessment of its adaptability to full technical scale. The publication briefly discusses experiences of practical aspects of adaptation, such as the operation of CTBB in conditions of sudden changes in pollutant concentration and variable operating parameters, as well as in terms of the reliability of the installation operating in real conditions, often extremely unfavorable for the technological process. This allowed the establishment of limiting operating parameters for achieving high efficiency of odor degradation. The obtained results confirmed the significant adaptation and implementation potential of the CTBB technology, and thus the possibility of implementation to a full technical scale in wastewater treatment plants.

W 1987r. Światowa Organizacja Zdrowia (World Health Organization; WHO) opublikowała listę objawów związanych z SBS: 1. Dolegliwości typowo alergiczne: zapalenie śluzówek, astma oskrzelowa, przewlekłe zapalenia krtani i oskrzeli; 2. Choroby niezwiązane z występowaniem uczuleń: migreny, rozdrażnienie, zaburzenia koncentracji; 3. Inne: choroba legionistów (wywołana zakażeniem bakterią Legionella), gorączka klimatyzacyjna (humidifier fever), choroby nowotworowe, będące następstwem oddziaływania substancji rakotwórczych takich jak: dym tytoniowy, azbest czy radon. Według WHO i Narodowego Instytutu Bezpieczeństwa i Higieny Pracy Stanów Zjednoczonych (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health; NIOSH) objawy te są związane z problemami środowiska wewnętrznego, takimi jak niekorzystna temperatura w pomieszczeniu, wilgotność powietrza, wilgoć w budynku, przepływ wentylacji, materiały budowlane, hałas, oświetlenie, narażenie na drobnoustroje, takie jak pleśnie i bakterie, alergeny roztoczy kurzu domowego i lotne związki organiczne; LZO (Volatile Organic Compounds; VOCs) oraz lotne związki organiczne pochodzenia mikrobiologicznego; MLZO (Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds; MVOCs). Rozwój nowoczesnych technologii budowy budynków, globalne zmiany klimatyczne oraz dążenie do energooszczędności spowodowały przejście od systemów wentylacji naturalnej (pasywnej) do systemów wentylacji mechanicznej (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning; HVAC) o różnych zasadach działania w celu zapewnienia odpowiedniej wymiany powietrza wewnątrz pomieszczeń.

Accumulation of contaminants in enclosed spaces adversely affects people’s comfort and health and leads to the so-called „Sick Building Syndrome” (SBS). For this reason indoor air quality (IAQ) in residential spaces as well as in public buildings and places has become an important indicator of the health and well-being of users. In 1987, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a list of symptoms associated with SBS: 1. Typically allergic symptoms: mucous membrane inflammation, bronchial asthma, chronic laryngitis and bronchitis; 2. Non-allergic related diseases: migraines, irritability, concentration disorders; 3. Others: legionnaires’ disease (caused by infection with the bacterium Legionella), humidifier fever, cancers resulting from exposure to carcinogenic substances such as tobacco smoke, asbestos or radon. According to WHO and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), these symptoms are linked to indoor environmental problems such as unfavorable indoor temperature, air humidity, building moisture, ventilation flow, building materials, noise, lighting, exposure to microorganisms like molds and bacteria, allergens from house dust mites and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs). The development of modern building technologies, global climate changes, and the pursuit of energy efficiency have led to a shift from natural (passive) ventilation systems to mechanical ventilation (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning; HVAC) systems operating under various principles to ensure proper air exchange indoors. Increasing research in recent years indicates that ventilation units may be sources of microorganisms and chemicals causing secondary indoor pollution. Currently, there is a lack of awareness about quantitative determination, identification, and potential health effects of IAQ. This article presents a literature review on biological and chemical contaminants suspended in indoor air, with special attention to volatile organic compounds, especially of microbial origin. It discusses sources and causes of contamination and the possibility of chemical reactions in air and on filters leading to the formation of secondary organic pollutants. The role of HVAC systems in managing microbial and chemical contamination in indoor environments is also highlighted.

The Southwest Nigeria has witnessed tremendous increase in the output of municipal wastes in the recent years. Non availability of government policy on solid wastes management or its lack of effectiveness where it exists makes unabated open burning the predominant means of municipal solid waste disposal in the region. Open burning of municipal wastes being a major source of anthropogenic air emissions was investigated for atmospheric loading of some hazardous organic pollutants using the emission inventory method. The specific pollutants considered in this study were volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo –p- dioxin (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzo furan (PCDF). The estimated release of VOCs, PAHs, PCBs, PCDD and PCDF from open burning of municipal wastes in the region over the 5-year period investigated were 64000 tonnes, 988 tonnes, 43 tonnes, 0.56 tonnes and 0.2 tonnes respectively. Given the serious human health implications associated with these hazardous organic pollutants, the study suggested conversion of wastes to energy as a possible solution since the region also faces energy challenges.

Chemical compounds released into the air by the activities of industrial plants and emitted from many other sources, including in households (paints, waxes, cosmetics, disinfectants, plastic (PVC) flooring), may affect the environment and human health. Thus, air purification is an important issue in the context of caring for the condition of the environment. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as liquids with environmentally friendly properties (non-volatile, biodegradable, non-toxic, cheap, easy to prepare) are a promising solution to this problem. This paper reviews the advances made in the application of DESs as sorbents for the purification of atmospheric and indoor air. The potential of DESs and their subclasses (including SUPRAmolecular Deep Eutectic Solvents, SUPRADESs) applications in air purification processes were also summarized. The authors believe that this review can be useful for future readers as a starting point for research in the field of DESs and their application in air purification.

In this study, we investigate the changes in the concentrations of suspended particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) and selected gaseous pollutants (VOCs, H2S) in the atmospheric air inside and outside a 9-story building, which is intended primarily for the teaching activities. The purpose was to determine whether the air quality inside the building is directly dependent on the outside air quality. The analysis also included the influence of the height of the building, its location and environment, as well as meteorological conditions. No clear correlation was found between the measured parameters inside and outside the building. The height above ground (the floor on which the measurements were made) was found to have a significant influence on the concentration of each pollutant. Wind direction was also found to have a very important impact on the air quality inside the building. A strong relationship was observed on the leeward side between the concentration of impurities on the inside and outside of the building.

A SAW gas sensor based on Zinc Oxide (ZnO) piezoelectric substrate is simulated and evaluated for the detection of the dichloromethane (DCM) volatile organic compound (VOC). The study is performed based on the finite element method (FEM) using COMSOL Multiphysics software. The obtained device response using the ZnO substrate is compared to the one using the typical lithium niobate (LiNbO3) piezoelectric substrate. A thin film of polyisobutylene (PIB) membrane is selected to act as the sensing layer. The obtained results reveal a linear behaviour of the resonance frequency downshift (i.e., the sensor sensitivity) versus the investigated gas concentrations varying from 10 ppm to 100 ppm of DCM gas. Additionally, the sensor response is investigated by applying several thicknesses of PIB ranging from 0.3 µm to 1.0 µm. The observed sensor response shows less dependence on the PIB thickness using the ZnO substrate than the LiNbO3 one.

The aim of this paper is to estimate the mass concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene (B), toluene (T), ethylbenzene (E) and m-, p-, o-xylenes (X) inside of the driver-compartment of motor vehicles. The results were compared with the Czech limits for indoor environments and the external concentrations. The experiments were carried out on various routes with different methods of ventilation. The volatile emissions detected inside the vehicle were investigated in the city of Brno, Czech Republic. Cabin air was collected using desorption tubes and the samples were analysed by thermal desorption gas chromatography with a flame ionisation detector coupled with a mass detector. VOC concentrations detected in the cabin of the vehicle ranged from 2.93 µg.m-3 to 7.96 µg.m-3 for benzene, 1.42 µg.m-3 to 4.38 µg.m-3. for toluene, 44.06 µg.m-3 to 152.00 µg.m-3 for ethylbenzene and 63.07 µg.m-3 to 479.62 µg.m-3 for xylenes. The indoor limit value for benzene, according to the Czech standard, is 7 µg.m-3. Levels of toluene were consistently below the Czech hourly standard, whose value according to the Czech standard is 300 µg.m-3. According to our findings, various methods of ventilation are an important factor influencing the BTEX pollution levels within the interior of the vehicle. In addition, this paper presents the influence results of benzene on the health of passengers inside the cabin of the vehicle. The results show that all age categories, especially children under the age of two, are exposed to increased health risks.

ZnO-CuO flower-like hetero-nanostructures were successfully prepared by combining hydrothermal and dip coating methods. Flower-like hetero-nanostructures of ZnO-CuO were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and UV-Vis. The sensing properties of ZnO-CuO flower-like hetero-nanostructures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were evaluated in a chamber containing acetone or isopropanol gas at room temperature. The sensitivity of ZnO-CuO flower-like hetero-nanostructures to VOCs was enhanced compared to that of pure leafage-like ZnO nanostructures. Response and recovery times were about 5 s and 6 s to 50 ppm acetone, and 10 s and 8 s to 50 ppm isopropanol, respectively. The sensing performance of ZnO-CuO flower-like hetero-nanostructures was attributed to the addition of CuO that led to formation of p-n junctions at the interface between the CuO and ZnO. In addition, the sensing mechanism was briefly discussed.

The new passenger car, BMW 225 XE was tested. The results of measurements of concentration of VOCs carried out inside the car cabin depending on the temperature were presented. The investigation was carried out in a special climatic chamber isolated from external factors such as outside air pollutants and weather conditions. The following temperature values have been set: 17ºC, 20ºC, 35ºC and 50ºC. The samples were located inside and outside of the vehicle’s cabin. As expected, the concentrations of each compound increased with increasing temperature (volatility of VOCs increases with the temperature). Values of concentrations obtained in the measurements have been compared with the values of highest acceptable concentration specified in polish law. The article describes the investigation, which was provided in a special climatic chamber. The chamber was isolated from external weather conditions and pollutants. Before each sampling interior of car cabin was ventilated to remove all pollutants from inside. Concentrations of BTX measured in different temperatures were converted to temperature of 20ºC.

The effective capture of harmful gases and clean energy sources are of great importance for protection of the environment. In this regard, it is possible to take advantage of the MOF-graphene composites to develop new technologies for environmental and energy-related applications. These composites attract a great attention around the world due to their higher adsorption affinity toward CO2, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), H2 and CH4 reported in comparison to the parent MOFs. Integration of MOFs with graphene nanosheets can be a very effective strategy not only to improve their adsorption performance but also to generate new chemical and physical properties that are not present in MOFs alone. In this review we present the progress in the field of gas capture/storage using MOF-graphene composites with special attention on the correlation between composition, structure and adsorption properties.

Volatile organic compounds are considered as one of the most harmful pollutants. Among them are hydrocarbons, which belongs to one of the chemicals groups monitored in the process of using vehicles. The article emphasized VOC toxicity in the light of the changes in the legislation on engine exhaust emissions. For the determination of volatile organic compounds, the exhaust gases of selected passenger cars were tested. Gas chromatography was used for the studies. The results have been verified with regard to the introduction of increasingly restrictive Euro standards. Furthermore this article discusses the issue related to the control of VOC emissions from internal combustion engines in cars as well as the attitude of vehicle users towards the adverse environmental conditions associated with the emission of toxins.

Do badań wykorzystano metodę chromatografii gazowej.

Recently growing importance of control of indoor air. The requirements for such detectors are very high: a sensitivity of several tens of ppb; the detection of a large number of substances or to indicate the total amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), work in high humidity ranges. A very good solution for the determination of the VOCs is to use IMS (Ion Mobility Spectrometers) or DMS (ang. Differential Mobility Spectrometry) technology, which has a relatively low price while meeting the above requirements. The most important difference between classical spectrometer IMS and the DMS is the electric field. For the IMS it is a constant magnetic field of low intensity – around several hundred volts per cm, meanwhile for the DMS it is at least several kilovolts per cm and is a field with a relatively high frequency from 1 up to several MHz. Another area in which the detection of VOC is becoming increasingly important, is early diagnosis of serious diseases of civilization, eg. diabetes, lung or liver disease – the diagnosis can be made based on the analysis of exhaled air, preferably in conjunction with the study of emissions substances from the skin. Issues related to the prevention and early detection of the above mentioned diseases are rapidly developed, eg. in the US or in the UK. Given the scale of the problem and the challenges of a potential diagnostic method, the proposed technology DMS/IMS begins to be considered as possible to apply. Spectrometers of this type are also developed in Poland by WIChiR. Research results on the selected VOCs are showed in this presentation.

Ion Mobility Spektrometry) i DMS (ang.
