The exploration of the deep sea by scientists is extremely difficult and can be risky. Nevertheless, the development of technology in recent times, allowing the construction of safe submarines, has contributed to the significant progress of ocean research. The unique geomorphological features of Roatán Island and the availability of the Idabel submersible provide a rare opportunity to explore the Caribbean deep sea, and to study organisms and their environments down to about 800 meters. Our preliminary investigations allowed us to examine crinoid assemblages in detail. Gathered data will hopefully provide us information on their growth, lifespan and ecology, which may be particularly useful in terms of appropriate interpretation of the fossil record.

In the Sadowa Góra quarry in Jaworzno, southern Poland, the Muschelkalk deposits are exposed (Lower and Upper Gogolin Beds). The occurrence of echinoderms seems to be particularly interesting. The isolated ossicles of asteroids were found already in the 1st Wellenkalk of the Lower Gogolin Beds (Aegean), which is one of the oldest post-Paleozoic occurrence in the world. Until recently, it was believed that the first echinoids appeared in the Germanic Basin during the Bithynian (above the Conglomeratic Horizon of the Upper Gogolin Beds). Currently, they have been found, similarly to the remains of asteroids, already in the 1 st Wellenkalk. Attention was also drawn to the fact that the stratigraphically important crinoid species Holocrinus dubius may have appeared in Upper Silesia earlier than previously thought.

The biostratigraphic potential of Mesozoic crinoids (Crinoidea, Echinodermata) is less than that of many groups of nektonic or planktonic organisms, especially for age correlation on a supraregional scale. Only the Cretaceous stemless crinoids, both planktonic (Roveacrinids) and some benthic (Uintacrinus and Marsupites), are important in bio¬stratigraphy on a supraregional scale. Other benthic crinoids can be used basin). Many data indicate that some crinoids, including stalked crinoids, can be successfully used in Mesozoic biostratigraphic correlations of marine sediments when standard index fossils such as ammonites, conodonts, nannoplankton and foraminifers are lacking or they are rare in a given region. The paper briefly presents a discussion on the stratigraphic potential of stalked crinoids using Mesozoic taxa as an example, and provides new literature data on the importance of Mesozoic stemless crinoids for dating rocks.

The island margin of Isla de Roatán is a unique place of outstanding scientific and didactic values, with one of the longestcoral reef and an astonishing fauna inhabiting the deep sea zones. The unique geomorphological conditions enable to perform shore-based submersible operations at great depths. In this paper a short report from our dive down to about 650 m is presented. Our preliminary dive was used to document a diverse faunal assemblage, which allowed for a better understanding of the fossil record.

Liliowce zachwycają swoją urodą, a przy tym są bylinami niezwykle łatwymi w uprawie. Trudność może sprawić jednie wybór spośród ogromnej ilości ich odmian.

The first record of a comatulid crinoid Sievertsella cf. polonica (Radwańska, 1987), from the Pirabas Formation (Miocene of NE Brazil) is documented. The record points out to a shallow coastal tropical or subtropical paleoecosystem with rocks or reefs in the Miocene from Bragança-Viseu Basin on Brazilian equatorial margin.

A small faunule of feather stars or comatulids (free-living crinoids of the order Comatulida A.H. CLARK, 1908) is recorded from Upper Oxfordian strata (Bielawy/Wapienno sequence) in the Couiavia region, north-western Central Poland. It represents a single, very small-sized species, Semiometra petitclerci (CAILLET, 1923), hitherto an extreme rarity in the Jurassic sequences of France and Germany. The present record extends the geographic distribution of the species in Europe, to evidence a wider range of the genus Semiometra GISLEN, 1924, prior to its fairly common occurrence and higher diversity during the Late Cretaceous.

In the Santonian chalk glacial deposits exposed at Kornica (eastern Poland) an assemblage of echinoderms comprising asteroids, echinoids, ophiuroids, and crinoids (comatulids, roveacrinids, and Bourgueticrinus, Isocrinus, Isselicrinus, Marsupites) is documented. The Santonian age of sediments at Kornica has been determined with foraminifers. Numerous occurrences of the crinoid Marsupites testudinarius, indicate their late Santonian age.
