The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of tectonic processes on the thermal maturity of organic matter (OM) in samples from the Godula Beds of the Silesian Unit in the Western Carpathians. Reflectance measurements of vitrinite were performed to assess the degree of OM transformation in areas affected by tectonic faulting. Vitrinite fragments in direct contact with the slickenside exhibited higher reflectance values and higher palaeotemperatures (1VRo « 1.20%; T « 150°C) compared to fragments located away from the fault zone (2VRo « 1,00%; T « 138°C).
This study used microscopic analyses to investigate the thermal maturity of organic matter dispersed in Oligocene rocks from the Wt-4 well at depths ranging from 330 to 1933 m, within the Silesian Unit of the Polish Outer Carpathians. The thermal maturity, determined through vitrinite reflectance measurements, indicates that the organic matter is mature enough for hydrocarbon generation. The maximum palaeotemperature affecting the rocks was found to be between 109 and 153°C.

This study presents a novel geophysical approach for estimating the level of thermal maturity (LOM) in unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs using well log data. LOM is a crucial parameter for assessing the hydrocarbon generation potential of source rocks, but it traditionally relies on laboratory measurements of core samples, which can be time-consuming and costly. The proposed method combines two techniques: interval inversion for estimating total organic carbon (TOC) content from well logs and simulated annealing (SA) optimization for deriving LOM from the estimated TOC. The interval inversion method enables accurate TOC estimation by jointly interpreting multiple well logs over depth intervals, overcoming limitations of conventional point-by-point inversion. Using the estimated TOC, the SA algorithm optimizes an energy function related to Passey's empirical TOC-LOM relationship, iteratively finding the optimal LOM value that best fits the well log data. This approach provides a continuous in situ LOM profile along the borehole without requiring core measurements. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated through case studies on datasets from the North Sea (Norway), the Pannonian Basin (Hungary), and the Kingak Formation (Alaska). The LOM estimates show good agreement with reported maturity levels and allow reliable reservoir characterization. Statistical analysis confirms the robustness and accuracy of the results. By reducing dependence on core data, this integrated inversion-optimization workflow streamlines the reservoir prospecting phase, enhancing operational efficiency. The method holds promising applications across diverse geological settings for cost-effective evaluation of unconventional hydrocarbon plays.
Skały z typem I i IV kerogenu należą do rzadkości.

This work is devoted to the petrographic characteristics of dispersed organic matter in the Menilite Beds of Skole, Silesian and Dukla Units. Its purpose is to supplement the ongoing research on this one of the most interesting formations within the Carpathian Mts. with aspects of organic matter petrography, with the background of geochemical investigations. The main emphasis was placed on microscopic observations – the maceral composition of the rocks was characterized, the maturity level of organic matter was determined by measuring the reflectance of vitrinite fragments and also lithological aspects were described. The results were supplemented with data obtained from the Rock-Eval pyrolytic analysis, in particular parameters such as Tmax, TOC (content of organic carbon), HI (hydrogen index) and OI (oxygen index) were used. The relationship between the obtained results was examined, especially in terms of the relations between the maceral composition, geochemical parameters and lithology. All obtained results were traced both on outcrop and unit scale. Despite some limitations of the methods used, paleoenvironmental issues were also referred to. The rocks collected within Menilite Beds are characterized by various lithology. These are mainly different types of shales (argillaceous, marly, carbonate). Mudstones, sandstones, siltstones, cherts and micritic limestones are also present, but their content is lower. The richest in organic matter are shales and mudstones, while in the case of sandstones, siltstones and cherts its content is significantly lower. In the qualitative composition of organic matter, the following association is most often observed: alginite + bituminite + liptodetrinite + collotelinite + vitrodetrinite + fusinite/semifusinite/inertodetrinite. In few rocks some of the components are missing, however it is not common. Maceral composition is most often dominated by macerals of the liptinite group - alginite, bituminite and liptodetrinite. Their content is usually much higher than macerals from the vitrinite group (represented by collotelinite and vitrodetrinite). Macerals of the inertinite group (fusinite, semifusinite, inertodetrinite) are common, but at the same time their content is very low. Solid bitumen is also present in few samples. In addition, bioclasts in the form of fish skeleton fragments are often observed. The content of individual macerals can vary widely within the same lithology. Alginite is the most numerous in mudstones of the Silesian and Skole Units. The highest content of bituminite on the other hand is observed in the marly shales of the Silesian Unit and the argillaceous shales of the Skole Unit. Liptodetrinite is most common within mudstones and shales of the Silesian and Dukla Units. The highest content of vitrinite is observed in clay and marly shales of the Dukla Unit. The organic matter of Menilite Beds was deposited mainly in shallow water marine environment, as indicated by the high content of alginite. This environment may have been varied in terms of oxygenation and sedimentation conditions, which may be suggested by the significant differences in the content ratio of alginite and bituminite. The organic matter of the Menilite Beds mainly represents kerogen types II and III, as well as their mixture. Rocks with kerogen types I and IV are rather rare. In the most of outcrops, the organic matter of the Menilite Beds is in the immature phase. In the Skole Unit, no organic matter being in “oil widow” phase is observed. In the Silesian Unit, samples with a higher degree of thermal transformation are found in so-called pre-Dukla zone. Apart from the mentioned zone, samples with the maturity level between immature stage and early oil generation phase are only incidentally observed. In the Dukla Unit, rocks with organic matter being in the oil window phase are observed in the Świątkowa tectonic window. Increased maturity is also suggested by Rock-Eval pyrolysis results for rocks collected from the southernmost outcrop (Komańcza 2). No regional trends in the variability of Tmax and Ro parameters are observed. The best generation potential is observed for mudstones and some of the argillaceous shales (especially in the Skole and Silesian Units). On the other hand, rocks with poor generation potential are cherts, sandstones and siltstones. However, lithology itself cannot directly indicate the generation potential, as this can change in a relatively wide range within the same type of rock.
In this work, vitrinite reflectance analyses and 1-D thermal maturity modeling of the Paleozoic–Mesozoic section of the Miechów Trough allowed to explain the thermal history that influenced hydrocarbon generation. The thermal maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Lower Paleozoic to Mesozoic sedimentary successions is in the range of 0.49 to 3.06% of mean random vitrinite reflectance. The estimated maximum palaeotemperatures of analyzed rocks are in range from ~70 to ~290°C. The Variscan thermal regime was different than Mesozoic one. At least two fluid flow events might be identified. Maximum palaeotemperature (~120-290 ºC) in the Silurian to Lower Carboniferous sedimentary succession was achieved in the late Carboniferous to early Permian. The Late Variscan tectonics activity may have been triggered by increased heat flow that was, at least partly, connected with fluid circulation. Maximum palaeotemperature (~70-150 ºC) of the Zechstein to Jurassic sedimentary succession was achieved during Mid-Late Jurassic. It was likely caused by a hot fluid flow event. The hydrocarbon potential of Paleozoic source rocks was exhausted before the Upper Jurassic and Cenomanian reservoir rocks and traps were formed. Consequently, the majority of hydrocarbons generated during the pre-Late Jurassic stages were lost. Thus, the hydrocarbons contained in Mesozoic reservoirs were charged by younger source rocks, such as the Oligocene Menilite Shales from the Outer Carpathians.
Vitrinite reflectance analysis was applied to establish the burial and thermal history of the northern margin of the Holy Cross Mountains. The open public mean random vitrinite reflectance (VR) data were analysed in four borehole sections (Opoczno PIG-2, Ostałów PIG-2, Nieświń PIG-1, and Radwanów IG1). Non-linear VR patterns in the Permian–Triassic strata suggest that thermal maturity developed due to hot fluid flow in the Jurassic. Additionally, in three well sections, VR breaks occur at the base of the Permian. Therefore, the thermal maturity of the organic matter, contained in the Carboniferous strata, was reached at the end of the late Carboniferous and was not overprinted by Mesozoic processes. Both sedimentary burial and fluid-flow processes could contribute to a high level of thermal maturity of the Carboniferous rocks. In summary, this work: (1) highlights the influence of hydrothermal events in the Mesozoic on thermal maturity patterns; (2) extends the earlier observations of the late Variscan (pre-Zechstein) thermal event/regime beyond the Małopolska Block onto the Łysogóry Block; and (3) discards the influence of Permian-Mesozoic burial on the maturity of Carboniferous and, by implication, older strata.
In this study, microscopic analysis was applied to investigate fluid flow in the Oligocene shale and sandstone samples from the Krosno Beds (Silesian Nappe, Outer Carpathians) in the Bere¿ki outcrop. Analysis of calcite generation in veins and reflectance of organic matter measurements were done. Three generations of calcite were observed, indicating three stages of fluid migration along the veins in sandstones. Moreover, oil droplets and solid bitumen migration were seen during microscopic analyses. Thermal maturity based on vitrinite reflectance measurements indicates mature organic matter to hydrocarbon generation.

The composition and maturity of the dispersed organic matter within the Inoceramian Beds of the Dukla Unit in the Polish part of the Outer Carpathians were characterized. The characteristics were based on the results of microscopic observations in reflected light, combined with the vitrinite reflectance measurements. In addition, Rock-Eval pyrolysis was performed for selected samples. The field work covered 23 outcrops, from which a total of 85 samples, representing Cisna Beds, Łupków Beds and undivided Inoceramian Beds were collected and analyzed. Maceral composition of the investigated samples is relatively monotonous. The analyzed rocks are dominated by vitrinite-inertinite material, usually with a small addition of the liptinite group macerals. Macerals of the vitrinite group are represented by larger, mostly elongated fragments of collotelinite and small fragments of vitrodetrinite. Their content reaches a maximum of 14 vol. %, but usually does not exceed 1 vol. %. Macerals of the inertinite group are mainly sharp-edged fragments of semifusinite and fusinite as well as fine inertodetrinite. Their content usually does not exceed 2 vol. %. Liptinite group macerals are the least represented group. Mainly alginite (lamalginite) and less frequently sporanite, cutinite and liptodetrinite are observed. The content of organic matter (determined on the basis of the TOC parameter) ranges from 0.3 to 5.6%, and in the case of ¾ of the samples it does not exceed 2%. Organic matter represents types III and IV of kerogen. The maturity of organic matter was determined based on the measurements of vitrinite reflectance (Ro) and the Tmax parameter. Both parameters indicated the degree of thermal transformation of the organic matter at the level of the oil window – from its early to late phase. A regional trend of variability of the described Ro and Tmax parameters is observed, indicating a higher maturity in the eastern part of the study area. The investigated samples have usually low generation potential and can be considered as poor source rocks.
The subject of the study was the No. 116/2 coal seam belonging to the Cracow Sandstone Series of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Reflectograms of the samples taking into account all the vitrinite group macerals present in the coal were recorded for ΔRo close to the standard deviation and in the standard range. A careful analysis of vitrinite reflectograms reveals the presence of three or four clearly distinguished peaks. When assessing the rank of coal, only the main maximum, peak No. 4, was considered to be significant. Measurements of the average reflectance of collotelinite were made only on the vitrinite surfaces with a thickness of more than 1 mm. Only two maxima were revealed on detailed reflectograms. These maxima correlate with the peaks marked as No. 3 and 4 in the sample reflectograms taking into account all the vitrinite group macerals. The Cdaf content in the tested coal from the Janina coal mine is between 75.9 and 77.5 wt%, while for vitrain, it ranges from 71.1 to 75.5 wt%. This relationship is an exponential regression with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.95h and can be approximated by a linear correlation of r = 0.94. The correlation strength between the volatile matter content and the coefficient of average reflectance in the vitrinite of the tested coal was also examined. The statistically significant correlation is strong, which is expressed by the exponential correlation coefficient “r” being close to 0.99 and its linear approximation with the correlation coefficient r = 0.98. However, no correlation was found between the measured reflectance values and the GI coefficient calculated for the examined samples.

Analizy mikroskopowe materii organicznej mają kluczowe znaczenie w analizie systemów naftowych i poszukiwaniach złóż węglowodorów. Przeanalizowano skład macerałowy i dojrzałość rozproszonej materii organicznej w wybranych wydzieleniach litostratygraficznych jednostki dukielskiej.

Microscopic investigations of organic matter play a key role in analyzing oil systems and prospecting for hydrocarbon fields. Information about its maceral composition and the degree of thermal transformations is essential in selecting prospective exploration areas, modelling generation processes and in all types of geological aspects where source rocks play a priority role. Maceral composition and maturity of dispersed organic matter in selected lithostratigraphic divisions of the Dukla Unit were analyzed. The research material consisted of 50 samples collected from 23 outcrops. The samples were collected from Inoceramian, Majdan, Hieroglyphic, Menilite and Krosno Beds, as well as from Variegated Shales. The main part of the research included microscopic observations under reflected light and UV as well as measurements of vitrinite reflectance. For a more complete interpretation, Rock-Eval pyrolysis was performed for some of the samples. In terms of quality, the composition of organic matter seems to be similar – macerals from the vitrinite, liptinite and inertinite groups are observed. Possible differences are emphasized in the proportions between the content of macerals from these groups. Within the vitrinite group, fragments of larger (> 10 µm) collotelinite and smaller (<10 µm) vitrodetrinite can be distinguished. The group of liptinite macerals is dominated by alginite, while bituminite, liptodetrinite, sporinite and cutinite are observed less frequently. Macerals from the inertinite group are most often represented by crushed fragments of semifusinite and fusinite, and finer inertodetrinite. Additionally, solid bitumens, sometimes exhibiting fluorescence, are present in individual samples. The content of organic matter (TOC parameter) is very diverse – ranging from <1% to 9%. Due to the content of organic matter, the studied rocks were divided into groups of low (Variegated Shales, Majdan Beds, Hieroglyphic Beds), medium (Inoceramian Beds), high (Menilite Beds) and variable (Krosno Beds) TOC. The investigated samples also show variability in the proportions of maceral groups. The dominance of vitrinite-inertinite (Inoceramian Beds and Majdan Beds), as well as vitrinite (Hieroglyphic Beds), liptinite and vitrinite-liptinite macerals (Menilite Beds) is observed. Investigated organic matter also varies in the degree of thermal transformations, from the immature phase to the late “oil window”. In regional scale, samples maturity appears to be increasing towards S and SE.
In this study, weapply microscopic analysis to evaluate thematurity of organic matter and characterise the macerals dispersed in the Upper Eocene shale samples from the Hieroglyphic Formation (Silesian Nappe, Outer Carpathians). The mean vitrinite reflectance values indicate the presence of organic matter immature to hydrocarbon generation (Ro≈0.43%).The main organic component dispersed in analysed samples is vitrinite, characteristic of kerogen type III.
This paper presents the first data on the organic matter and thermal maturity of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks in the East Herzegovina region of the External Dinarides. Representative, organic-rich samples from outcropping sedimentary rocks of different ages in the area (Triassic to Neogene) were selected and analysed. The organic matter was studied by Rock-Eval pyrolysis and under the microscope in reflected non-polarized light and incident blue light. The results obtained show the presence of different types of organic matter in the area and thermal maturity stages from immature (Cenozoic) to early mature (Mesozoic). Vitrinite is abundant in the samples analysed, with the exception of Cretaceous samples that contain mostly lamalginite and bituminite. While measured vitrinite reflectance in end-member samples (Triassic shale 0.78 % Rr and Neogene coal 0.34% Rr) are in good correlation with the T max parameter from Rock-Eval pyrolysis. T max generally shows lower values in most Mesozoic samples. The organic petrographic data indicate that specific kerogen in Cretaceous and some Triassic sedimentary rocks is a probable reason for the significantly lower T max values. In addition, the results of pyrolysis documented before and after extraction revealed that free hydrocarbons (bitumen) in the surface samples analysed suppress the T max values.
Maturity modelling was carried out using basin and petroleum system modelling (BPSM) software in the lithologic sections of 17 wells of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Poland). The best fit between calculated and measured vitrinite reflectance (VR), porosity and density data was obtained by applying a thickness of eroded sedimentary overburden from 1700 m in the east to 4500 m in the west and relatively low to moderate heat flow values during the maximum late Carboniferous burial. These heat flow values were in the range 50-71 mW/m2
Raman spectroscopy and vitrinite reflectance measurements of dispersed organic matter from Carboniferous shales in boreholes in the northern part of the Intra-Sudetic Basin were used for thermal history reconstruction. Microscopic investigations have shown that the organic matter is dominated by the vitrinite maceral group. In analysed samples, organic matter shows a varied degree of thermal alteration determined by the mean random vitrinite reflectance (VRo) ranging from 0.72% to 3.80%. Mean apparent maximum vitrinite reflectance (R’max) values reached 4.98%. The full width at half maximum of D1 and G bands in Raman spectra are well-correlated with mean VRo and R’max. Thermal maturity in the boreholes shows a regular increase with depth. Geological data combined with Raman spectroscopy and mean vitrinite reflectance results indicate that the analysed Carboniferous strata reached maximum paleotemperatures from c. 110 to c. 265°C. The regional paleogeothermal gradient in the late Paleozoic was c. 80°C/km. The Variscan heating event presumably caused a major coalification process of organic matter. The Carboniferous–Permian magmatic activity must have contributed to high heat flow, adding to the effect of sedimentary burial on the thermal maturity.
Dispersed organic matter from the Menilite Beds of the Skole, Silesian and Dukla units was investigated using optical microscopy and Rock-Eval pyrolysis. In the composition of organic matter fragments, macerals of vitrinite, liptinite and inertinite groups are present. Macerals of the liptinite group dominate (alginite, bituminite and liptodetrinite) whereas macerals of vitrinite (collotelinite, vitrodetrinite) and inertinite (fusinite, semifusinite, inertodetrinite) groups are less common. In most outcrops examined the organic matter is immature as evidenced by vitrinite reflectance Ro <0.5% and Tmax <435°C. Only the areas of Fore-Duklazone and the Świątkowa tectonic window have a higher degree of organic matter transformation (oil window phase). Types II and III of kerogen are most common in the samples investigated.
Organic matter from Menilite Beds of the Dukla Unit was studied (optical microscopy, Rock-Eval pyrolysis). In its composition, macerals from vitrinite, liptinite and inertinite groups are observed. Macerals of the liptinite group are dominating (alginite, bituminite and liptodetrinite). Among all invested lithological types, mudstones have the highest average content of these macerals, while in case of marly shales, sandstones/siltstones, micrite limestones and chert the content of individual liptinite macerals is always lower than 1 vol%. The vitrinite group is represented mainly by collotelinite and vitrodetrinite and its average content in all analyzed lithologies does not exceed 1 vol%. Fragments of collotelinite show significant diversity in terms of the reflectance. Macerals of the inertinite group (fusinite, semifusinite, inertodetrinite) are usually limited to single occurrences within the entire investigated sample area. In 41 out of 43 samples, the collotelinite fragments were numerous enough that it was possible to measure the reflectance. For samples in which reflectance of vitrinite fragments was measured, this parameter ranges from 0.25% to 0.56%. Rock-Eval pyrolysis results provided additional information, of which the most important were values of TOC (from 0.47% to 6.04%, average 2.61%), Tmax (417–449°C), hydrogen (95–502) and oxygen (<133) indices. In the western part of the investigated area, within the tectonic window of Świątkowa, Menilite Beds are in the phase of oil window, while in other locations organic matter is immature. Analyzed samples contain types II, II/III or III of kerogen. Type II dominates in clay shales and mudstones, while type III is most often observed in marly and carbonate shales and also in sandstones/siltstones.

Przebadano fragmenty rozproszonej materii organicznej z warstw menilitowych jednostki dukielskiej (mikroskopia optyczna, piroliza Rock-Eval).
Composition and thermal maturity of organic matter components from Menilite Beds (Skole Unit) were analyzed. Samples (26) were collected from 9 outcrops within the investigated area. Samples represented several lithologies – clay and marly shales, mudstones, sandstones/siltstones, micritic limestones and cherts. Macerals of three groups (vitrinite, inertinite and liptinite) are present in the analyzed samples. Macerals of the liptinite group are the most numerous. Within this group, bituminite is most common, while alginite and liptodetrinite are less often observed. Macerals of the vitrinite (collotelinite, telinite, vitrodetrinite) and inertinite (fusinite, semifusinite, inertodetrinite) groups are also present, but their content is significally lower compared to the macerals of the liptinite group. Organic matter within all the investigated area is clearly immature, which is confirmed by both vitrinite reflectance Ro and Tmax parameters. The composition of organic matter relates mostly to kerogen type II and III (and their mixture). Sev- eral relations between Rock-Eval parameters and maceral composition were identified. The obtained results were compared to data from Menilite Beds of the Silesian Unit.

W artykule przeanalizowano skład i dojrzałość materii organicznej obecnej w warstwch menilitowych jednostki skolskiej.
W badaniach wykorzystano pomiar refleksyjności witrynitu (Ro), pomiar Tmax z analizy Rock-Eval, molekularne wskaźniki dojrzałości otrzymane z analizy GC-MS frakcji nasyconej i aromatycznej ekstrahowanej substancji organicznej.

The evaluation of threats connected with the presence of methane in coal seams is based on our knowledge of the total content of this gas in coal. The most important parameter determining the potential of coal seams to accumulate methane is the sorption capacity of coal a. It is heavily influenced by the degree of coalification of the coal substance, determined by the vitrinite reflectance R0 or the content of volatile matter Vdaf. The relationship between the degree of coalification and the sorption capacity in the area of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB) has not been thoroughly investigated, which is due to the zonation of methane accumulation in this area and the considerable changeability of methane content in various localities of the Basin. Understanding this relationship call for in-depth investigation, especially since it depends on the analyzed reflectance range. The present work attempts to explain the reasons for which the sorption capacity changes along with the degree of coalification in the area of Jastrzębie (the Zofiówka Monocline). The relationship between parameters R0 and Vdaf was investigated. The authors also analyzed changes of the maceral composition, real density and the micropore volume. Furthermore, coalification-dependent changes in the sorption capacity of the investigated coal seams were identified. The conducted analyses have indicated a significant role of petrographic factors in relation to the accumulation properties of the seams located in the investigated area of USCB.

Prześledzono relację parametru R0 w stosunku do V daf.
