For partitions in existing buildings with potential leaks, a leak identification method and, above all, a way of assessing the impact of such a leak on sound transmission loss are needed. In this paper, a new method was proposed to evaluate the impact of leakage on the resultant sound transmission loss based on measurement of the sound intensity distribution over a partition. Measurements were carried out in down-scaled reverberation chambers with a scale 1:4. A homogeneous MDF board with leakage in the form of holes of a specific diameter was used. The measurement results were also compared to the values obtained by calculation using well-known models of sound transmission loss of the homogenous partition with an aperture. Measurements and calculations confirmed the possibility of determining the impact of leakage on the resultant sound insulation based only on the measurement of the sound intensity level distribution on the surface of the tested partition.

The article presents the results of laboratory tests analyzing the influence of wall chasing on the airborne sound insulation of solid walls. Chasing of various depths and widths were cut to simulate typical on-site installation scenarios for electrical and plumbing systems. The study demonstrates that the presence of wall chases can reduce the sound reduction indexes. The results highlight the importance of considering this modifications in acoustic performance assessments of masonry partitions.

The paper presents a method for estimating the single-number sound insulation indexes (Rw, RA,1 and RA,2) of calcium silicate block walls based on surface mass. Empirical formulas based on the mass law were developed. The results indicate the potential for developing an acoustic classification system for solid silicate blocks based on their surface mass. This approach may streamline the design process and serve as a foundation for future standardization efforts.

This paper presents the application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in the selection of wall construction materials, taking into account airborne sound insulation, construction costs, and the building’s primary energy demand. The analysis covered three commonly used materials in residential construction: ceramic hollow blocks (POROTHERM), aerated concrete (YTONG), and calcium silicate blocks (SILKA). Particular emphasis was placed on the acoustic performance due to the building’s location in an area exposed to traffic noise. A pairwise comparison matrix was used in the AHP framework, assigning weights to each criterion: 53.9% for sound insulation (Rw), 29.7% for primary energy demand (EP), and 16.3% for construction cost. The final AHP ranking indicated that sound insulation had the greatest influence on the outcome, leading to the selection of SILKA as the most favorable material. Despite having the highest construction cost and moderate energy performance, SILKA proved the most effective, confirming its suitability where acoustic comfort is prioritized. The results provide practical support for designers and investors in selecting building materials for single-family houses, particularly in locations subject to increased environmental noise.

This paper presents two solutions employing locally resonant metamaterial to level the mass-air-mass resonance impact on the sound insulation. The first operates on the cantilever beam resonance, and the second uses masses vibrating in flexural mode cut out from the additional panel. Both structures are mounted between two lightweight, honeycomb cardboard panels with a double-wall resonance of 420 Hz. Solutions were analysed numerically for their vibration and acoustic properties and measured in the reverberation chamber, resulting in information about the dispersion curve, effective dynamic mass, and sound insulation. The analytical results of Sound Transmission Loss (STL) and the experimental measurements of diffused-field Sound Reduction Index (SRI) proved the existence of sound-insulation enhancement. The local rise in SRI resulted in an increase of broadband Weighted SRI up to 5 dB.

The article concerns the acoustic insulation of a double wall made of silicate blocks. A comparison is presented between the results of theoretical modelling and acoustic measurements of the completed partition. The paper focuses in particular on the differences observed in the low frequency range. Consideration is given to the influence of the natural modal distribution on the resultant sound insulation. The discussion on the basis of the collected results of comparing computer modelling and acoustic measurements of the physically realised wall was used to formulate the final conclusions.

Acoustic booths, also called „furniture enclosures”, are becoming more and more popular among employers who want to provide their employees with greater comfort while working in open space offices. The lack of a harmonized test standard, suitable for both furniture sets and enclosures, has caused confusion among acousticians, furniture manufacturers, office designers and users. In this situation two research standards are very useful: ISO 23351-1, used while determining the speech level reduction, and PN-EN ISO 11957, which describes the research methodology for acoustic insulation. The obtained parameters, determined in a controlled environment of laboratory, allow for a reliable comparison of both the acoustic properties of furniture sets and the furniture enclosures.

The basic parameter of materials used in constructional solutions of anti-noise protection, is sound insulation, which can be determined in laboratory conditions and also using theoretical models. The use of numerical methods in the form of the Finite Element Method to calculate the mechanical impedance of a baffle and then the sound insulation of homogeneous baffles was presented in the article. A 1 mm thick steel plate with a square, rectangular and round shape was analyzed. The boundary conditions for simply supported and clamped plate were taken into account in the numerical calculations. The results of the calculations were compared to both the commonly used the mass law and to the experimental tests. These analyzes will be the starting point for analyzes of multi-layer baffles, for which it is no longer possible to apply the mass law.

As part of the described tests, measurements of the acoustic insulation of a wall fragment were carried out in situ, in a room whose reverberation time in the area of the tested sample was modified by the use of a material absorbing the acoustic wave and was 1,09 or 1,71 s. The measurements carried out showed a significant impact of changes in room reverberation parameters on the standard indicators of the field assessment and, consequently, on the possibility of carrying out the assessment. The results presented indicate the practical limitations of the method resulting from environmental conditions in terms of room reverberation. The article proposes a relatively simple method that allows for a significant improvement in the parameters of the acoustic field to a degree sufficient to carry out measurements.

PL

The acoustic properties of multi-family wooden frame buildings were considered. Full-scale models of a floor, a dividing wall and an opaque part of a façade were examined in the laboratory. The measurements were taken at different phases of the sample’s construction to determine the contribution of their particular elements to the total sound insulation of the final structure. The acoustic effect of a floating screed and a suspended ceiling was analysed for the floor. Different assembly methods of the ceiling were investigated, and the flexible channels were significantly more effective than rigid wooden battens. The impact sound insulation improvement of the floating screed seemed lower when it was use on a lightweight floor in comparison to a traditional massive slab. The ceiling and the screed should be used together to satisfy the requirements. In the case of a dividing wall, various types of timber frames were examined, the single wall with additional insulating cladding and the totally separated double wall achieved a performance level adequate for residential use. The application of elastic dividers and resilient spacers was of critical importance for the effectiveness of the additional insulation. The results are useful for engineers and designers when working on high-quality residential buildings with good acoustic performance.
