Resource recovery is a process that has been used to obtain products from industrial waste. Mining tailings can be used as an alternative through ore beneficiation to create by-products for this type of waste. The work herein investigated the recovery of two products from a real tailing generated in the Zn beneficiation route in the flotation step. A non-magnetic fraction was submitted to a hydrometallurgical route to produce MgSO4 and CaSO4. Thermodynamic simulations using FactSage software were performed to evaluate the optimal leaching conditions varying the S:L ratio, the sulfuric acid concentration, and temperature. The best modeled conditions for pure dolomite were established in 1.2 mol×L-1 H2SO4, S:L ratio 1:10, at room temperature, showing 100% Mg extraction. The simulation with the real composition showed 100% Mg extraction using 1.0 mol×L-1 H2SO4, S:L ratio 1:10, at room temperature. Experimental leaching tests led to Mg and Ca extraction yields of 72% ±5 and 2%, respectively, obtained at 50°C in 35 min. The cementation step resulted in 92.3% of Cd removal from the leach liquor with Zn:Cd ratio of 100:1 in 5 min at 25°C. The obtained by-products were CaSO4 and solubilized MgSO4. Both are potentially usable for agriculture purposes, being magnesium sulfate a secondary macronutrient as fertilizer, and CaSO4 as a soil conditioner.

The bioleaching efficiency of various solids, including mining waste, is influenced by the physicochemical changes occurring on the particle surface in the presence of microorganisms. Mineral modification is widely used in mineral processing and can also be applied in bioextraction and bioremediation. Surfactant adsorption can serve as a tool to control bacterial attachment, a critical factor in such processes. Bacterial adhesion promotes the intensification of leaching, while increased mobility reduces the metal removal. Therefore, the impact of such modification and its further effect on the release of toxic metals from mining waste was investigated, focusing on physicochemical aspects. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in shaken flasks for four weeks, with solid to liquid ratio of 1:10. Two types of surfactants were used: cationic (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate). Zeta potential was measured using the classic streaming potential and streaming current method. The surface morphology of the leaching residue was analysed using scanning electron microscopy. Secondary precipitates formed were identified by X-ray diffraction, revealing jarosite formation. The presence of surfactants caused a change in the surface charge of particles, which could affect the behaviour of bacteria during leaching and, thus, its efficiency. Arsenic was identified as the primary toxic element. When no modifications were applied, its recovery from the solid reached 1631 g/L after four weeks of leaching. Conditioning of the mineral waste with surfactants before the process resulted in lower metal content: 1264 mg/L for a cationic surfactant and 937 mg/L for an anionic surfactant. Moreover, a correlation was observed between the efficiency and the measured surface area— higher recovery rates were associated with larger specific surface area values. The adsorption of surface-active agents altered the surface properties of the waste material. Treatment with the anionic surfactant increased the negative zeta potential, whereas exposure to the cationic surfactant resulted in a positive surface charge. At the end of the bioleaching, all leaching residues exhibited a positive zeta potential. This effect was primarily caused by the formation of positively charged iron(III) precipitates under acidic conditions. It has been demonstrated that in the presence of microorganisms, arsenic can be released from mining waste and that surface modification with surfactants inhibits this process, which may have potential applications in preventing unwanted effects of bioweathering

The construction industry faces a challenge in adopting sustainable practices that minimize environmental impact. The search for eco-friendly alternatives has led to the development of materials incorporating recycled waste, optimizing natural resource use. For that reason, ceramic materials with recycled mining waste are gaining attention for their ability to improve the physical and mechanical properties of products while managing mining waste. This approach aligns with circular economy principles by promoting material reduction, reuse, and recycling, which in turn reduces CO2 emissions and enhances manufacturing sustainability. Innovations in the ceramic industry can play a key role in transitioning to a more environmentally responsible model. In this research the main goal is understand the properties and environmental benefits through efficient waste management in new construction materials. For that, this study develops new ceramic materials using recycled mining sludge from Panasqueira mine (Portugal) exploring their potential for sustainable production. Specifically, this research evaluated the impact of adding different proportions of mining sludge (10%, 25%, and 50% by weight) on ceramic brick manufacturing and the samples were fired at controlled temperatures of 800, 950, and 1100 °C, allowing the evaluation of the thermal influence on the final properties of the samples. The methodology employed involved multiple stages, and the following methods were employed: the chemical and mineralogical properties of the materials used were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques to identify their composition. TGA was performed to assess the thermal properties of the materials. Elastic properties and compactness were evaluated by measuring ultrasonic pulse velocities. The mineralogy, texture, and microstructure of the samples were examined using SEM, providing detailed information about the structural and compositional characteristics. The chromatic properties get to study the aesthetic effects of waste incorporation and their use in new and ancient buildings. The results highlighted that the addition of mining sludge did not significantly alter the overall mineralogy. However, XRD and SEM analyses confirmed that sludge acted as a flux, promoting the formation of mineral phases at lower temperatures and increasing the vitreous phase, improving ceramic structure. The addition of sludge, combined with higher firing temperatures, enhanced the mechanical properties, as evidenced by increased ultrasonic pulse velocities, indicating greater internal cohesion and strength. Color changes were influenced by waste proportions and firing conditions, with higher temperatures (1100°C) producing the most significant variations compared to control samples. The main conclusions confirm that using mining sludge in ceramic manufacturing offered environmental and economic benefits, including reduced clay extraction and water consumption (by 22% to 50%). This led to a more sustainable process, aligning with the industry's goal to lower the carbon footprint. The addition of mining sludge in ceramic brick production improves production sustainability, reducing the use of raw materials, saving energy, and recycling industrial waste. These findings demonstrate the potential of this new ceramic material as an eco-friendly solution for the construction industry. This research is part of the project PCI2024-153488 funded by MICIU/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and ERDF/EU.

In recent years, priority has been given in the areas of waste management and environmental protection to measures aimed at maximizing the utilization of raw materials and products and minimizing the amount of waste generated. Advanced technologies also allow for the recovery of secondary raw materials from waste, which, in the case of mining and industrial waste that has been deposited in the past on heaps, dumps, and industrial landfills, enables effective protection of the mineral deposits’ resources and balanced management of them. The possibility of substituting raw materials with waste generated in the mining and processing sector is conditioned by economic factors, including above all the quantity and composition of the waste, as well as environmental factors, especially when disposal sites are incorporated into the landscape as valuable natural, cultural, or recreational objects. A SWOT/TOWS analysis can be one step in the decision-making process aimed at assessing their potential (economic and environmental). By systematizing information and considering the current state, this tool is used to analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of a planned project. This paper attempts to use SWOT/TOWS analysis as an instrument to help decide on a strategy for dealing with heaps, dumps, and industrial landfills and the waste accumulated on them. The use of SWOT/TOWS analysis in the process of preliminary assessment of two different courses of action allowed the identification of strengths and weaknesses (representing internal factors) as well as opportunities and threats (describing external factors) of the analyzed options. The SWOT/TOWS analysis carried out allowed an aggressive strategy to emerge for further action, for both management scenarios.

Machine learning is the science of how algorithms and systems improve knowledge and performance through experience. The paper discusses the possibility of applying machine learning algorithms (an AI subfield) to assess the secondary raw material potential of mining waste and tailings accumulated in hard coal and iron ore disposal sites. Applied machine learning algorithms are available for the Python language. Classification algorithms were used only (supervised machine learning). The first stage of studies included defining the category and features of the objects selected. The learning process used training data, whereas test data were applied to check the model efficiency. Analysis of the results obtained indicates that machine learning seems a promising tool to assess the secondary raw materials potential of waste accumulated in dumps and heaps, despite achieving a prediction accuracy at the level of 0.75 for hard coal objects and 0.85 for iron ore objects. It has been assumed that Gaussian NB, GaussianProcessClasifier and MLP Classifier algorithms of supervised learning show the highest prediction results. This suggests that machine learning may be used as a tool supporting the decision process, the result of which will be the economic use of waste accumulated in heaps, dumps and disposal sites.

The variability of the selected properties of mining waste under the influence of its long-term storage and increasing vertical pressure is assessed, through tests conducted on five samples of waste rock used in the reclamation of an open-pit mine. It was found that the considerable variability in the mining waste grain size, exhibiting extreme strength and slakeability parameter values, influences the filtration properties of the rock material. Increasing vertical pressure exerted under laboratory conditions resulted in significant grain degradation, material consolidation and permeability reduction. Exponential functions are the most accurate way of characterising the correlations between the rock sample volume density and the filtration coefficient. The test results demonstrated that the oldest waste was characterised by the lowest permeability and highest compressibility. The material with half a year storage time exhibited the highest filtration properties. Waste stored for 15 years and subjected to coal recovery was also characterised by high permeability. The mining waste filtration coefficients obtained for each vertical pressure value were referenced to values characteristic for soil and rock at a water temperature of 10°C (the average annual temperature of shallow groundwater in the area of waste sampling for laboratory testing).

This paper presents the results of a composite consisting mainly of industrial waste bound by a hydraulic binder. The composite consists of unburnt coal-mining slate, shredded rubber waste (SRW), fly ash and CEM I cement. The purpose of using the above components was to protect the unburnt coal-mining slate from the negative effects of water, which causes degradation of the aggregate grain size and significantly affects the load-bearing capacity of the aggregate. This was achieved through the use of a binder consisting of shredded waste rubber, fly ash and cement, which imparts hydrophobic properties to the composite. The composite is to be used in road pavement construction and earthworks as a substitute for standard materials. This paper focuses on testing the effects of 5, 10 and 15% additions of shredded rubber waste (SRW) on the physical and mechanical parameters of the composite, mainly compressive strength, water absorption by mass, capillary rise and deformability under cyclic loading. The composite was tested under cyclic loading conditions using a measurement system based on digital image correlation (DIC), with which the deformations occurring on the surface of the test specimens were determined. The results obtained showed the influence of shredded rubber waste additives on the decrease in compression strength (after 7 and 28 days of specimen care), mass water absorption and capillary rise, as well as an increase in the deformability of the composite under destructive loading and cyclic loading.

Road construction and its part related to earthworks are characterized by a very high demand for natural building materials such as soils and aggregates. As a result, despite the very large deposits of these resources, their quantity is shrinking very quickly. The answer to this problem should be the use of industrial waste as a building material, an idea that fits very well into the increasingly popular Closed Circuit Economy economic system, where by-products of technological processes from one industry are used as production raw materials in other industries. The article presents a proposal for such a building material consisting of three industrial wastes bound by a hydraulic binder. The components of the composite are unburned coal slate (S), shredded rubber waste (R), fly ash (F) and CEM I 42.5 cement (C), the mixture was given the working name SRFC. The purpose of its manufacture was to be able to manage as much industrial waste as possible, using shredded rubber waste (SRW) to protect unburned coal shale from the harmful effects of water. The use of shredded rubber waste SRW and, more specifically, a rubber-ash-cement binder (RFC) results in giving the mixture certain hydrophobic properties. Water interacting with the coal slate causes degradation of its grain size (disintegration of larger aggregate grains), which results in a decrease in its load-bearing capacity and the possibility of obtaining blow-out properties. This paper presents the results of a study on the effect of SRW content (additives of 5, 10 and 15%) on the values of compressive strength, bulk water absorption and the height of capillary rise of water by samples made of the composite. In addition, on the basis of previous research results, the possibility of using the composite in road pavement construction layers is presented, based on the guidelines for binder-bonded road pavement construction layers contained in Technical Guideline No. 5 and French guidelines.

The aim of the work was to determine the leaching value of selected heavy metals from waste from Wałbrzych heaps. Samples of collected materials were crushed into fractions below 4 and below 1 mm, which were then subjected to leaching, and the content of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, was determined in the resulting eluates. Metal concentration values are below the limits of quantification. On this basis, it was found that the migration of heavy metals from post-mining waste to the aquatic environment is insignificant and should not be a relevant issue. However, research needs to be continued for different leaching conditions.

The extractive industry is a significant source of waste in Poland. Legal provisions of dealing with waste from the exploration, extraction and processing of minerals, due to their specificity, are regulated separately in the Mining Waste Act. Only in unregulated matters the provisions of the Waste Act are to apply. It should be noted, however, that the legislation regarding waste do not apply to: - extractive residues, if the concession for the extraction of minerals or the mining plant operation plan, or the local spatial development plan for the mining area specify the conditions and manner of their development, - overburden, dumped in a mining area, if the term and method of its management have been determined in accordance with the provisions of the Geological and Mining Law regarding the operation of a mining plant, unless it constitutes waste within the meaning of the provisions of the Waste Act. In accordance with the waste hierarchy referred to in this article, waste generation should be prevented as a priority. A significant part of extractive residues is managed in accordance with the above mentioned requirements, including, inter alia, placing it back into excavation voids for reclamation purposes. Data presented in the article indicate that the amount of extracted residues in 2021 in the mining plants covered by the statistics counted 346.3 million tonnes, of which only 67.6 million tonnes (19.5%) were mining waste, while as much as 278.7 million tonnes (80.5%) are not subject to waste regulations.

Mining dumps, particularly inactive or abandoned mines located near makeshift mining towns, have significant environmental and social impacts. The Touissit-Boubker lead mine, operated for years by the Touissit Mining Company (CMT) and abandoned without rehabilitation, is an example of this socio-economic and environmental collapse. Large quantities of harmful solid waste containing clayey aggregates rich in lead sulphide have been dumped in dykes on the edge of the village of Touissit. These mining wastes were rewashed to extract galena causing a depletion of lead sulphide. The objective of this study is to evaluate the possibility of using washed mining waste as sandy aggregate for the manufacture of masonry mortar. Cylindrical mortar tests, made with various proportions of sand and mine waste were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and mechanical analysis by uni-axial compressive strength after curing for 3, 14, 28 and 60 days. The results obtained revealed that the mining waste consists of dolomite, quartz and clay. The dehydration rate of the mortar specimens is strongly affected by the amount of the waste added and the grain size. The mechanical strength of the mortar specimens mostly depends on the grain-size of the aggregates than on the amount of mine waste added. The microstructure of the mortar did not change when sand was replaced by mine waste of the same grain size.

Hard coal mines overseen by the District Mining Authority in Rybnik strive to minimize their impact on the environment. Mine water is used, among others, for fire prevention (sealing abandoned works, liquidating pits using water and ash mixtures), for process purposes(e.g. sprinkling the output, cooling machinery, refilling the closed Circuit of the processing facility). If possible, mines source water from their own underground intakes, or use treated rainwater and snowmelt. In turn, mining waste is managed on the surface, used for creating reclamation and landscape forms, and to fill the sedimentation tanks for flotation waste, mining pits, reservoirs, etc. A part of the waste is used for producing aggregates and for filling pits as part of fire prevention. As part of mining activities, a part of the land requires reclamation through: development of land form, improvement of soil properties and soil recovery, regulation of water conditions, reinforcement of scarps, and reconstruction and construction of the necessary roads. The experience of underground mining plants has shown that selective management of mine water will allow for reusing even the most saline water and Iowering the environment use fees. Another important aspect is fire prevention at the bottom of mines, as it allows for the reuse of burdensome waste and saline water. The "Olza" reservoir plays an important role in the management of mine water, as it contributes to the conservation of River Odra. With reference to the reclamation of mine areas, it was shown that soil-free reclamation methods successfully eliminate topsoil shortages.
