Bazary stanowią fundamentalny element irańskiej architektury, pełniąc funkcję ośrodków życia społecznego, gospodarczego, kulturalnego i religijnego. W ramach pracy przeprowadzono ankiety i częściowo ustrukturyzowane wywiady z różnymi grupami interesariuszy.

This article explores the historic development of greenery in market square spaces using the example of the Polish town of Zakliczyn in Lesser Poland. Contemporary Polish conservation policy aimed at preserving a public space’s historic values is often at odds with the needs and demands of the general public, whose members appear to be in consensus that urban public spaces, especially market squares, should feature more greenery. This study traces the spatial development of Zakliczyn’s market square throughout the last 150 years based on historic cartography and iconography, as well as contemporary orthophotomaps, and demonstrates that greenery in this historic market square is indeed a relatively recent phenomenon, although scant fragments of it did appear as early as immediately before World War II. It also contrasts the greenery in market squares from the People’s Republic of Poland period (1947 to 1989) with the most recent revitalizations occurring during the past 5 years.

This article discusses the activation declining markets as socially important public places, whose character impacts the local housing environment. It presents the maladjustment of their form and function to the requirements and preferences of contemporary society. It indicates possible directions and perspectives of renewal for markets with the activation of the surrounding environment. The description of the perspectives above was based on an analysis of conceptual proposals by students in the context of the surrounding housing and location in the city of Katowice. The works for the case study were divided into three groups: forms covered by a single, main canopy, forms with single stands, and market halls. These concepts provided an opportunity to develop variant concepts of spatial and functional forms adapted to the local context of the site. The analysed variants of solutions depict the introduction of contemporary architectural form and an attempt to fit in with the existing urban fabric and surrounding residential development as a response to user demand and expectations.

Przytaczane przykłady nawiązują do projektów koncepcyjnych, konkursowych i poddawane zostaną wyłącznie analizie ideowej, estetycznej, nie wnikając w zagadnienia technologii rewaloryzacji historycznej.

Heritage buildings carry both material and immaterial values – historical, symbolic, and cultural. When properly revitalized, they can be given new functions, restoring their former glory or even transforming them into icons of their cities. However, the process of working with historic structures requires great sensitivity and discernment, and revitalization – long undervalued – is increasingly being seen as a creative challenge rather than merely a conservation routine. This article analyzes several examples of heritage adaptation and revitalization, differing in scale and design approach. It explores the delicate aspects of restoring original functions or assigning new ones to such objects, focusing solely on conceptual and aesthetic analysis of competition and conceptual projects, without delving into the technological aspects of historical revalorisation.

The revitalisation of degraded areas is a multi-stage process that requires the involvement of the public, local authorities and often large financial resources. In Poland’s large cities, the revitalisation process mainly focuses on revitalising deserted inner cities and the city’s main representative spaces, while other smaller spaces, marginalised areas or spaces in housing estates remain forgotten. The problem of revitalisation is shaping up similarly in smaller urban centres. The paper shows a selected student revitalisation project, carried out as part of the Revitalisation of the Urbanised Environment course by students of Architecture at the Kielce University of Technology.

Skojarzenie tych okoliczności oraz dodanie nowej infrastruktury hydrotechnicznej poprzez zbudowanie sieci rurociągów wyposażonych w systemy pompowe zasilane energią elektryczną produkowaną w tych lokalnych małych elektrowniach wodnych zdaniem autorów artykułu może stanowić uzupełniający sposób w rozwiązywaniu problemów usuwania nadmiaru wody opadowej i roztopowej z powodziowych rozlewisk cieków śródlądowych.

Small rivers and inland waterways are important facilities in terms of energy and ecological security in Poland. The agricultural areas adjacent to these streams have mostly been equipped with drainage infrastructure for over 70 years. However, field observations from the last 20 or even 30 years confirm the facts that drainage facilities such as drainage ditches, underground drainage systems, or naturally created flooded lands are becoming increasingly ineffective in these areas year by year. Using the local situation of the former Small Hydroelectric Power (SHP) infrastructure, along with their renovation and revitalization, as well as the construction of new sources of electricity of this type, is one of the ways to enrich the resources of renewable sources for electricity production. The association of these circumstances and the addition of new hydrotechnical infrastructure by building a network of pipelines equipped with pumping systems powered by electricity produced in these local small hydro power stations, according to the authors of the article, may be a supplementary method in solving the problems of removing excess rainwater and meltwater from flooded areas of inland streams.

Autorzy przedstawiają znaczenie planowania diagnostycznego w kontekście bezpieczeństwa, ochrony dziedzictwa i projektowania nowych funkcji użytkowych. Artykuł omawia kluczowe elementy interdyscyplinarnego modelu diagnostycznego oraz zasady tworzenia programów badań adaptacyjnych.

Diagnostics is not only research, it is primarily a planning process based on an individual diagnostic program for each underground facility. Incurring financial expenses for ill-considered and poorly planned diagnostic tests and the lack of operational prevention in an underground facility may result in incorrect diagnoses, and the resulting implementation of recommendations may negatively affect the preservation of mining heritage and the safety of use of the facility with a new function. In this context, attention should be paid to the importance of interpreting research results and forecasting, on this basis, the conditions of protection, adaptation and operation of an underground facility. The implementation of typical diagnostics based only on a physical examination is not a sufficient procedure for the correct assessment of the technical condition of excavations, existing technical infrastructure or historical elements of mining security and technologies. The test results themselves may lead to simple conclusions: replace/repair or not. However, the forecasting process concerns the interpretation of the results of appropriately planned research, taking into account the knowledge of the dynamics of destruction mechanisms and comprehensive historical, geotechnical, geological, conservation and technological knowledge, taking into account the criterion of duration, i.e. time. The first part of the article is devoted to the theoretical and methodological foundations of adaptive diagnostics of underground mining excavations. The authors present the importance of diagnostic planning in the context of security, heritage protection and the design of new utility functions. The article discusses the key elements of the interdisciplinary diagnostic model and the principles of creating adaptive research programs.

The article discusses the current issues related to the revitalization of a building fully protected by conservation laws. The work covers a wide range of activities involved in the construction process aimed at fully restoring the functional qualities of historical architecture, while also ensuring the proper exhibition of preserved cultural heritage elements. The analyses, study materials, and design works carried out enabled the implementation of construction works for this unique building. To illustrate the research problem, the method of a selected case study was used, and design activities (Research Through Design) were incorporated into the research process. The subject of the study is a specific building – a monument, which also serves as a representation and an example of a neglected spatial structure within a historic inner-city complex. Based on the analysed case, general conclusions were formulated that are helpful in preparing diagnostics and design works related to the revitalization of historical buildings in poor technical condition.

The ageing population problem is frequently raised in economic and social contexts. In architecture, there is also a need to look for new solutions to improve the quality of life of senior citizens. Fundamentally, the question of improving the accessibility of existing facilities, which, with time, no longer meet the needs of the residents, is fundamental. This article aims to present a proposal for revitalising the 'Superunit' in Katowice based on research into the quality of life of senior citizens in Poland. Based mainly on a qualitative research method to assess the quality of the existing space, as well as on the results of a survey with open-ended questions and in-depth interview on the living conditions of senior citizens in the Superunit, a quantitative and statistical research method to identify user groups and their numbers, based on population-wide statistical data collected using mixed methods by the Statistics Poland (GUS) and the Public Opinion Research Centre (CBOS). As a result, the project to revalue the building, transforming it into a vertical housing estate, is fully adapted to older people's needs and meets the requirements for new residential facilities and solves problems related to the quality of the building's construction and the limitations of the architecture of the communist period. The revitalisation concept helps prevent social exclusion and supports seniors in adapting to new life circumstances. It enhances their life satisfaction, encourages greater activity, and fosters stronger social connections, contributing to improved physical and mental health. The presented approach can be implemented in the revitalisation process of specific buildings and entire housing estates, as well as at the design stage of new investments that meet the needs of older people. This will help improve the housing situation by increasing the accessibility and usability of residential units, while also reducing the amount of raw materials used to produce building materials, which will positively impact their cost.

Suburbanization and urban sprawl, alongside the concept of creating compact cities, highlight the need to repurpose undeveloped, degraded spaces, such as post-industrial and warehouse areas. Revitalizing these spaces involves addressing the land’s physical condition and improving the social and economic well-being of local communities. In many European cities, the late 20th century saw industrial activity dominate. However, after 1989, political changes in Poland led to the relocation of industry from central districts to make room for modern residential and service developments. An example is Warsaw’s Żerań, previously centred around industrial hubs. A key challenge in redeveloping such areas is addressing land contamination, reclaiming degraded post-industrial zones, and eventually revitalizing the space to introduce new functions. Contamination often leaves these areas unused for years, but proper remediation can breathe new life into them. Furthermore, public spaces such as parks and squares in Żerań are often underused, but proper design following cleanup can foster social connections and contribute to a well-functioning urban environment. Revitalizing degraded urban areas ensures rational use of available space, aligning it with desired functions. Identifying and addressing these areas can transform neglected industrial zones into thriving residential and service centres, attracting new residents and investors.

Suburbanizacja i rozrost miast, obok koncepcji tworzenia zwartych miast, podkreślają potrzebę ponownego wykorzystania niezagospodarowanych, zdegradowanych przestrzeni, takich jak obszary poprzemysłowe i magazynowe.

The construction sector’s environmental footprint, accounting for 40% of global CO2 emissions and 30% of waste generation, necessitates rigorous evaluation of sustainable alternatives to demolition. This study quantitatively assesses the environmental advantages of industrial site revitalization versus demolition and new construction, focusing exclusively on material conservation and emission reduction. While existing research often combines environmental with socioeconomic metrics, this analysis isolates ecological impacts through a case study of Radex Park Marywilska in Warsaw, Poland – a representative post-industrial site in a coal-dependent economy. Using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology for 2005-2010 data, we analyze material flows (22% concrete, 3% steel, 15% brick by volume) and calculate avoided emissions using region-specific factors (e.g., 1.8 t CO2/t steel). The results demonstrate that revitalization preserved 72,315 tons of materials and reduced CO2 emissions by 48,217 tons - resulting in significant environmental savings compared to demolition scenarios, and exceeding Central European benchmarks. These savings stem primarily from bypassed demolition waste (30-50% reduction) and avoided new material production, aligning with EU circular economy targets. Key findings include: (1) steel reuse delivers 61% of total emission savings, revealing material-specific leverage points for decarbonization; (2) Poland’s carbon-intensive industrial baseline amplifies the relative benefits of adaptive reuse; and (3) standardized “avoided cost” metrics can bridge policy gaps in sustainable urban planning. The study provides a replicable framework for environmental cost accounting in post-industrial contexts, emphasizing the need for regionally tailored LCA models. We conclude that revitalization is not merely an alternative but an ecological imperative for decarbonizing urban development. Policymakers should prioritize adaptive reuse in climate action plans, leveraging its dual benefits of emission reduction and resource conservation. Future research should expand this methodology to assess the scalability of observed benefits across diverse geographic and industrial contexts.

Przyszłe badania powinny rozszerzyć tę metodologię, aby ocenić skalowalność obserwowanych korzyści w różnych kontekstach geograficznych i przemysłowych.

Contemporary cities are facing the challenge of integrating public spaces, transport systems, and commercial functions, which is reflected in the revitalization processes of historic buildings. In the transformation of urban spaces, it is essential to preserve cultural heritage while respecting the historical value of architectural monuments and adapting them to contemporary needs and the principles of sustainable development. These include improving energy efficiency, employing renewable energy sources, and implementing circular economy practices. This article presents selected issues related to the comprehensive redevelopment and revitalization of the Warszawa Wileńska Railway Station – a historic facility originally constructed in 1862 as the Petersburg Station. The project, carried out under challenging conditions involving continuous passenger traffic, dense urban development, and proximity to historic tenement buildings, required the development of non-standard design, logistical, and fire safety procedures. Moreover, the construction process necessitated close cooperation with Polish State Railways (PKP) and numerous other institutions. This investment serves as an example of an innovative approach to the revitalization and integration of railway infrastructure with a multifunctional and commercially oriented shopping complex, becoming a symbol of modern revitalization efforts.

Po przeprowadzeniu szczegółowych konsultacji społecznych, władze samorządowe Warszawy, wspólnie z PKP SA i prywatnymi partnerami, podjęli decyzję o realizacji projektu rewitalizacji dworca Warszawa Wileńska w formule partnerstwa publiczno-prywatnego (PPP). Konsorcjum firm: Radex SA i Warbud S.A. zbudowały Centrum Handlowo Usługowe zintegrowane z Dworcem PKP Warszawa Wileńska. Zastosowano nowoczesne technologie prefabrykacji oraz rozwiązania przyjazne środowisku – m.in. systemy oszczędzania energii, wentylacji i retencji wody opadowej. Projekt ten, realizowany w trudnych warunkach ciągłego ruchu pasażerskiego, zwartej zabudowy miejskiej oraz wśród zabytkowych kamienic, wymagał opracowania niestandardowych procedur projektowych, logistycznych i przeciwpożarowych. Ponadto, budowa obiektu wymagała ścisłej współpracy z PKP oraz wieloma instytucjami. W 2002 roku inwestycja została ukończona, a obiekt oddano do użytku publicznego. Współpraca z PKP i jej wieloma spółkami wymagała doskonałej koordynacji całej inwestycji. Rewitalizacja dworca kolejowego Warszawa Wileńska w 2000 roku stanowiła istotny element szerszego procesu przekształcania tej części Pragi-Północ w nowoczesną i funkcjonalną przestrzeń miejską. Inwestycja ta, stanowi niewątpliwie przykład nowatorskiego podejścia do rewitalizacji i integracji infrastruktury kolejowej z obiektem handlowym o charakterze wielofunkcyjnym i komercyjnym, stając się symbolem nowoczesnej rewitalizacji.

Revitalization is a complex city-wide process aimed at considering and meeting local needs, including improving conditions in residential environments. Standards and procedures were regulated in Poland in 2015 by the Revitalization Act, which emphasizes stakeholder participation throughout the process, still requiring the development of methods and tools. The article presents solutions used in other European countries, particularly proven methods of cooperative investment management. The cooperative models implemented in Europe are also used for the creation, adaptation, and modernization of downtown buildings. Based on the experiences from the analysis of area revitalization processes in Łódź, compared with models such as CLT (Community Land Trust), the authors attempt to recommend alternative methods of operation that would enable broader stakeholder participation in ongoing investment processes. The proposed counter-proposal assumes the creation of conditions for the implementation of an investment financed jointly by the participants. It provides for cooperation between the local government and future users. The authors believe that the analyzed models, so far used mainly in residential investments, can be successfully employed in larger urban areas. Adapting the CLT model to Polish conditions, due to the need for non-profit operation, could be an alternative to the controversial public-private partnership (PPP) method.

Przewiduje on współpracę samorządu lokalnego i przyszłych użytkowników.
