The escalating challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and urban expansion have amplified the need for reliable, high-resolution, and timely environmental data. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) technologies have become indispensable tools for environmental monitoring, enabling the systematic collection, analysis, and visualization of spatial data across diverse ecosystems. This review synthesizes recent innovations in GIS and RS that are transforming environmental surveillance and decision-making. Key developments include the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for enhanced image classification, cloud-based platforms like Google Earth Engine (GEE) for scalable analysis, and the increasing use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and hyperspectral sensors for high-resolution monitoring. Furthermore, the convergence of geospatial analytics with big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and participatory approaches such as citizen science is expanding the accessibility and impact of environmental data. Case studies from Africa, Asia, and global initiatives highlight practical applications in land use change detection, water resource assessment, hazard risk mapping, urban heat island analysis, and biodiversity conservation. While the potential of these tools is vast, persistent challenges include data interoperability, technical capacity gaps, policy integration barriers, and ethical concerns related to surveillance and data equity. This review calls for greater investment in open-source tools, interdisciplinary collaboration, and inclusive data governance to realize the full potential of GIS and RS in achieving environmental resilience and sustainability. Future directions emphasise real-time monitoring, ethical frameworks, and the democratisation of spatial intelligence.

The remarkable feature of rapid urbanisation, which has fundamentally altered the distribution of land cover and land use (LULC), is what sets the contemporary era apart. The impact of these modifications on the resilience of Abuja’s metropolitan infrastructure from 2017 to 2022 is examined in this study. Our study examined the dynamic changes in LULC using information from remote sensing, geospatial analysis software, and land cover categorization techniques. The findings indicate major changes in Abuja’s topography, including a decrease in the number of water bodies, a decrease in the number of trees, the expansion of urban areas, changes in agricultural land use, and fluctuations in the amount of grazing land. The previously mentioned changes have significant consequences for urban infrastructure resilience, affecting various sectors such as water supply, transportation, housing, utilities, and food distribution systems. The infrastructure supporting water supply and sanitation may be severely stretched as the number of water bodies decreases, affecting the quantity and quality of accessible water supplies. As metropolitan areas expand, greater strain is placed on transportation infrastructure, exacerbating traffic congestion and complicating road maintenance difficulties. Changes in agricultural land use can have an impact on food production and distribution, hence affecting food security. Deforestation can cause ecological deterioration, affecting a variety of aspects such as temperature regulation, biological diversity, and atmospheric purity. Adaptive approaches, green infrastructure, and adopting sustainable urban design can all strengthen the resilience of urban infrastructure, according to this study. The significance of renewable energy adoption, community participation, green building laws, the establishment of public-private partnerships, integrated water resource management, and data-driven decision-making is emphasised. Improving legal frameworks that prioritise resilience and sustainability is critical. It is critical to have a complete grasp of the complicated links between changes in LULC, and the resilience of urban infrastructure in order to enable educated urban design and decision-making processes. Policymakers and urban planners may address and minimise the negative consequences of climate change while improving the overall quality of life in cities by using sustainable development practises. The findings of this study have the potential to dramatically improve Abuja’s people’s well-being and sustainability, especially given the variety of urban difficulties they encounter.

Według naszych badań podejście adaptacyjne, zielona infrastruktura i przyjęcie zrównoważonego projektowania urbanistycznego mogą wzmocnić odporność infrastruktury miejskiej. Podkreśla się znaczenie energii odnawialnej, udziału społeczności, przepisów dotyczących zielonego budownictwa, ustanowienia partnerstw publiczno-prywatnych, zintegrowanego zarządzania zasobami wodnymi i podejmowania decyzji w oparciu o dane.

This study was designed to examine the feasibility of recycling cassava effluent, sawdust, and unused paper products to enhance their utilization for beneficial purpose. Waste newspaper paste (WNP), Waste writing-paper paste (WWP), and Waste carton paper paste (WCP) were prepared and then used separately to similarly fabricate composite panels with Sawdust particle (SDP) proportioned at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% by weight. The binder used was cassava starch slurry prepared from the effluent. Bulk density, water absorption, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, nailability, and flexural strength were determined for the developed samples. From the results obtained, the samples were found to be light-weight and their thermal insulation performance improved with increasing proportions of the SDP. Though samples containing the WCP exhibited the best satisfactory performance, it was found that all the studied samples could perform more effectively and efficiently as ceilings compared to some of those reported in the literature. From scientific-economic viewpoint, valorizing the above-mentioned wastes as described in this paper could help to protect the environment and also yield value-added insulation ceilings for enhancement of sustainable building construction especially in tropical areas.

Celem pracy było określenie możliwości recyklingu ścieków z manioku, trocin i odpadowych materiałów papierniczych w celu ich szerszego wykorzystania. Nitki z makulatury gazetowej (WNP), nitki z makulatury z papieru do pisania (WWP) i nitki z makulatury z kartonu (WCP) zostały przygotowane, a następnie użyte osobno do wytworzenia paneli kompozytowych z dodatkiem trocin (SDP) przy udziale masowym 0%, 25%, 50 %, 75% i 100%.

Large quantities of waste newspapers and sugarcane bagasse are prevalently discarded by open burning or indiscriminate dumping, thereby posing severe danger to the environment and public health. This study sought to examine the feasibility of managing the wastes by recycling them into value-added products for building construction. Composite panels were fabricated using waste newspaper paste (WNP) with sugarcane bagasse particles (SBP) varied at 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 % by weight of the composite mix. Epoxy resin was thoroughly mixed with its hardener and applied as binder. The samples were developed in triplicates per proportion of the SBP adopted and then dried completely before their thermophysical and strength properties were evaluated. It was observed that variations in mean values of water absorption (28.57 – 39.43 %), thickness swelling (6.21 - 8.33 %), specific heat capacity (1232 - 1312Jkg-1K-1) trended positively with increasing proportions of the SBP. Whereas nailability remained 100.0 % in all the cases, bulk density (689.4 - 640.5 kgm-3), thermal conductivity (0.1186 - 0.1163 Wm-1K-1), thermal diffusivity (1.396 - 1.384 x 10-7 m2s-1), and flexural strength (2.572 - 2.280 N/mm2) correlated inversely with the added fractions of the SBP. Generally, it was found that the samples could perform satisfactorily if applied as ceiling or partition elements in building design. Therefore, recycling of sugarcane bagasse and waste newspapers as described in this study could serve as a promising way of solving their disposal problems and also enhance achievement of low-cost and safe buildings.

The current study used vertical electrical sounding (VES), borehole (BH) data, Remote Sensing (RS), and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to identify groundwater potential zones in the coastal area of Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria, for the first time. This research aimed at producing groundwater potential zone map that can divide the study region into separate zones based on their groundwater potential ranking. The deployed method integrated VES procedure utilizing the Schlumberger electrode configuration some core samples for estimation of porosity, Satellite Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), Digital Elevation Model (DEM), which served as input data for RS and GIS. Thematic maps of lineament density, lithology, land use and land cover, drainage density, and slope were created as GIS layers in a geo-database. Weightages were assigned based on a pair-wise assessment of the components that appear to be essential in retaining, storing, and transporting groundwater. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used in a GIS setting to merge five thematic maps of elements controlling groundwater occurrence and movement using weighted overlay. Results show that aquifers with high thickness and depths are clustering around VES 9, VES 14, and VES 15 that have the highest aquifer thickness in the range of 219–262 m and the highest aquifer depth in the range of 222.09–264.74 m. The highest aquifer resistivity in this area ranges from 2963 to 3683 Ωm. The hydraulic conductivity of the area is highest around the south-eastern part of the study area, with maximum value of 3.43 m/day. The transmissivity increases in the northern part of the study area, while the eastern parts showed the lowest values. The highest aquifer resistivity in this area ranged from 2963 to 3683 Ωm. Inference from analysis indicated that the most important element was soil type (43%), followed by lineament density (33%) and slope (13%). Land use/land cover was discovered as a marginal contributor to groundwater in the research region, accounting for about 4% of the total contributors. The study CR determined to be 0.043884, is much lower than the 0.10 consistency threshold and hence the justification of the results. The result of the overlay of the geophysical survey on the groundwater potential zones obtained from the RS, GIS, and VES techniques done in the first time in the study area has shown seamlessly that the study area has high groundwater prospectivity for subsistent and commercial extractions.

The computed velocity ratio and Poisson’s ratio were used to calculate the pore fluid and lithology content. The gas sand, oil sand, and brine sand were identified using velocity ratio and Poisson’s ratio analyses. The velocity ratio and Poisson’s ratio study supported the gas sand anticipated by the rock physics analysis using lambda-mho and mu-rho. The velocity ratio and Poisson’s ratio analyses were used to better define the wet sand anticipated by the lambda-mho and mu-rho rock physics analyses. Lithology and pore fluid determination are very essential for the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. The wet sand from the rock physics analysis of lambda-mho and mu-rho was predicted to comprise oil sand and brine sand. The value of lambda-mho is between 21.74 and 25.67; for mu-rho is between 16.34 to 23.21; for Poisson’s ratio is between 0.25 to 0.29; and for Vp/Vs ratio is between 1.74 to 1.83. These confirm the presence of oil sand in all the seven (7) reservoirs studied in two (2) wells. All the reservoirs fall between the Agbada region (10212.50 – 11741.00 ft) and have a very good net pay zone ranging from 41.50 ft to 193.00 ft in the Niger Delta region, Nigeria. The obtained velocity ratio and Poisson’s ratio were used to calculate the pore fluid content. The gas sand, oil sand, and brine sand were identified using velocity ratio and Poisson’s ratio analysis. The velocity ratio and Poisson’s ratio studies supported the gas sand anticipated by the rock physics analysis using lambda-mho and mu-rho. The velocity ratio and Poisson’s ratio analyses were used to better define the wet sand anticipated by the lambda-mho and mu-rho rock physics analyses. The moist sand anticipated by the rock physics studies of lambda-mho and mu-rho was oil sand and brine sand.

Coconut husk is generated yearly as waste in large quantities but majorly under-utilized. Also, as a result of high embodied carbon, cement production is one of the largest contributors to construction sector carbon footprint. Since accumulation of unmanaged agro-waste like coconut husk has an increased environmental concern due to its pollution effect, recycling it into sustainable construction materials is a viable solution for future generation. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the influence of coconut husk ash nanomaterial (CHAN) inclusion on electrical characteristics of plain cement paste (BCP) and mortar (CSM) samples at curing ages of 7 and 28 days. The results showed increase in electrical resistivity, thermal constant, and activation energy with curing duration for heating and cooling cycles of BCP and CSM. With inclusion of CHAN, the developed cement paste (CAP) and mortar (CASM) possessed lower values in all cases compared to their counterparts. Also, during heating at 28 days, both the CAP and CASM exhibited decrease in thermal constant. Though electrical resistance of all the samples varied inversely with temperature, CAP and CASM were found to possess greater potentials to make building structures intrinsically smart. Hence, in addition to solving disposal problems, utilization of coconut husks as described herein could enhance development of safe, inexpensive, and sustainable buildings that have large temperature sensing volume.
