Steel guyed masts are indispensable for telecommunication, broadcasting and meteorological networks, yet their great slenderness and reliance on tensioned stays make them unusually sensitive to execution errors, deterioration and wind‐induced effects. This study investigates the extent to which construction- and service-induced defects jeopardize the structural safety of such towers and evaluates practicable remedial measures. Seven lattice masts, each 72 – 76 m high and designed in accordance with PN-B 03204:2002 Steel structures: Towers and masts, were subjected to a comprehensive field survey that combined (i) visual inspection and photographic documentation, (ii) caliper measurements of flange-joint gaps, (iii) dynamometric assessment of guy-rope tension, (iv) geodetic measurements of shaft plumbness and (v) finite-element analysis of the stress–strain state under the most adverse load combinations defined by standards. The campaign revealed widespread surface and pitting corrosion, flange-joint gaps caused by improvised washer packs, and systematic absence of the specified plank clamps at guy anchorage points. Measured guy-rope tensions deviated from the design values by more than 8 %, inducing mast-head displacements of up to 238 mm from the vertical. The findings underscore the paramount importance of rigorous installation control, periodic tension monitoring and proactive corrosion protection if long-term reliability is to be maintained. An inspection and maintenance protocol is proposed, emphasizing third-party verification of flange joints and guy anchors, annual dynamometric checks, and a five-year repainting cycle.
Monitoring corrosion in aircraft structures through nondestructive testing is crucial for maintaining long-term aircraft serviceability. Corrosion monitoring is particularly challenging when corrosion damage is situated on internal surfaces of multilayer aircraft structures. The eddy current method is one of the most promising techniques for detecting and measuring such subsurface corrosion damage without direct contact or disassembly. However, due to their low sensitivity traditional eddy current probes with coaxial coils are not well suited for detecting corrosion damages of the local type, such as pitting or corrosion pits, in multilayer aircraft structures. This study tested the use of low-frequency eddy current probes of the double-differential type, characterized by 8 and 10 mm operational diameters, in detecting and measuring hidden corrosion damages of this local type. Such corrosion damages were simulated by means of flat-bottomed drilled holes of differing diameters and depths (or different diameters and residual thicknesses of the inspected sheet in the damaged area). The signals from the eddy current probes were evaluated in the complex plane using a universal eddy current flaw detector. The correlations between the amplitude and phase of the eddy current signal and depth of location of the local corrosion damages were analyzed. Results indicate that it is possible to estimate the residual thickness of the skin in locally corroded areas by measuring the eddy current signal phase, independently of the local corrosion damage diameter (size), providing useful information for residual service life determination.
W artykule przedstawiono przykłady oceny nośności i odkształcalności belek żelbetowych o różnym stanie oraz zakresie uszkodzeń korozyjnych betonu i prętów zbrojeniowych. Przeprowadzone analizy wykazały, że uszkodzenia korozyjne prętów zbrojeniowych oraz betonu mogą spowodować istotny spodek nośności i zwiększone ugięcie belek żelbetowych.

Reinforced concrete structures work in various environmental conditions during their service life, which cause corrosion of reinforcing bars and concrete of various intensity. In such cases we are dealing with corrosion damage, which is accompanied by scratching and loss of concrete, reduction of cross-sectional area of reinforcing bars as well as lowering the parameters of mechanical properties of concrete and reinforcing steel. Consequently, this affects the further safety and usability of reinforced concrete structures. This paper presents an analytical method and examples of evaluating the load-bearing capacity and deformability of reinforced concrete beams with different state and scope of corrosion damage to concrete and reinforcing bars. The analyses have shown that corrosion damage to rebar and concrete can cause a significant decrease in the load-bearing capacity and increased deflection of reinforced concrete beams.

W niniejszym artykule omówiono metodykę, zastosowania oraz możliwości badań metodą dalekozasięgowej defektoskopii ultradźwiękowej (LRUT – ang. Long Range Ultrasonic Testing). Odebrany sygnał, w postaci zobrazowania amplitudowego w czasie (A-Scan), dostarcza informacji odnośnie do lokalnych zmian przekroju poprzecznego rury.

This article discusses the methodology, applications and capabilities of Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT) method. The method allows screening the entire pipe wall, over tens of meters, from a single inspection position, as well as detection and location of discontinuities in the form of wall loss and corrosion effects on pipelines. It uses guided waves propagating in the axial direction of the pipe, excited by transducer rings consisting of connected piezoelectric modules. The received signal, in form of amplitude time scan (A-Scan), provides information on general variations in the total cross-sectional area of pipe.
