Bitumen, as one of the oldest construction materials, has significant recycling potential, which makes it both environmentally friendly and in line with the principles of the circular economy. Although the recyclability of bituminous materials is widely recognised, the discussion continues on the possibility of increasing the efficiency of using Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixtures. The article presents the results of research on the application of a new type of experimental bituminous binder dedicated to recycling in asphalt concrete. The study included experimental tests of asphalt concrete for the binder course with variable RAP contents up to 30%, using a cold feeding process. Both laboratory test results and the findings from a trial road section are presented. For comparison, conventional road bitumen 35/50 was used as the reference binder, while an innovative recycling-dedicated binder 35/50 exp was applied as the experimental binder. The mixtures were subjected to classification testing as well as extended testing of long-term ageing resistance. The research confirmed that the experimental 35/50 exp bitumen, dedicated to recycling applications, enhances the compactability of mixtures containing 20-30% cold-feed RAP and improves the ageing resistance of asphalt mixtures. It was demonstrated that the action of experimental bitumen dedicated to recycling in mixtures containing RAP occurs in several stages: during production and laying, experimental bitumen supports compactability, while in the long term, it contributes to improved ageing resistance.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań nad zastosowaniem nowego eksperymentalnego lepiszcza asfaltowego do recyklingu betonu asfaltowego. Podczas produkcji i wbudowania mieszanek z asfaltem w technologii eksperymentalnej następuje większa aktywacja i homogenizacja lepiszcza z granulatu asfaltowego poprzez asfalt eksperymentalny, natomiast w ramach oddziaływania długofalowego następuje poprawa odporności starzeniowej.
In this work, ground tire rubber (GTR) was thermo-mechanically devulcanized in the planetary extruder and subsequently was used for preparation of bitumen modified with ground tire rubber (20–40 wt%). The physical and processing properties of prepared materials were characterized based on penetration, softening point and melt flow rate measurements. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and volatile organic compounds’ emission level were used for assessment of interfacial interaction between GTR and bitumen.

The article presents an investigation of properties of asphalt mixtures produced from two types of reclaimed asphalt pavement material – one containing typical modified binder and one containing highly modified binder. Both types of reclaimed asphalt pavement material were obtained in field from real asphalt layers. The new test mixtures in which they were used contained no rejuvenators. The mixtures were heated to compaction temperature according to the national requirements; moreover, they were subjected to additional aging processes, including temperatures that exceed the degradation temperature of the SBS polymer used in their structure (200°C). Measure- ments of air voids and resistance to water and frost ITSR, which were performed after conditioning in compaction temperature conforming with national requirements, indicated that the mixture consisting of reclaimed asphalt pavement material with highly modified asphalt binder displayed more advantageous properties (ITSR in the range 87-90%) than the mixture consisting of reclaimed asphalt pavement material with typical polymer modified binder. Conditioning at 200°C demonstrated considerable differences between the tested mixtures. While the asphalt mixture containing typical polymer modified bitumen enabled placement and compaction, the mixture with highly modified binder lost its workability and compactibility, rendering it impossible to produce test specimens.

Mieszanka zawierająca asfalt modyfikowany umożliwiała rozkładanie i zagęszczanie, podczas gdy mieszanka zawierająca asfalt wysokomodyfikowany utraciła urabialność oraz możliwość zagęszczenia, uniemożliwiając uzyskanie próbek do badań.

One of the causes of damage to bitumen pavements in regions of the world with sub-zero temperatures is low-temperature cracking. To counter this phenomenon, asphalt mixtures (MMA) are being designed to resist the occurrence of such cracks. The choice of bitumen binder is crucial to the service life of a road pavement and its resistance to cracking. In this paper, the authors evaluated the influence of binder type on the low-temperature resistance of asphalt mixtures. Several modified bitumens, both medium and high-modified (HiMA), were used in the study. The basic parameters of the bitumens (softening point, penetration) as well as the group composition (SARA) were determined. The colloidal index was used as a criterion for the correct choice of binder. Low-temperature cracking resistance tests were also carried out on asphalt mixtures. The study was conducted using the TSRST method. The results showed that the use of modified bitumen improves the performance of MMA at low temperatures. It was also noted that the assessment of low-temperature cracking resistance using the colloidal index is not effective for modified bitumens; a different test methodology needs to be developed for their assessment.

The utilisation and processing of crude oil sludge is one of the major global challenges. Therefore, it is necessary to justify the following scientific solutions in the field of oil sludge utilisation and processing worldwide: the study of the physicochemical properties of oil sludge in order to obtain construction grade bitumen; detection of dispersion of solid particles in the composition of oil sludge; development of the optimal technological parameters for the process of obtaining construction grade bitumen from oil sludge; establishing a correlation dependence between process efficiency and the environment, the content of light fractions in the sludge composition, the process temperature. In this work, oil sludge was diluted with a solvent in a ratio of 70:30, with light naphtha used as a solvent. A laboratory distillation column was used to separate the sludge into fractions, and the chemical composition of the oil sludge was investigated. Oil sludge consists of asphaltenes up to 4.2–4.5%, resins up to 21.0%; paraffin-naphthenic hydrocarbons up to 41.2%; monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons up to 4.6%; bi- and tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbons up to 5.8%; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons up to 9.7%. The paper also presents the results of the change in the viscosity and density of the distillate fractions separated during the distillation of diluted oil sludge. Density and viscosity were measured using an areometer and a VPZh-4, respectively. One of the main components of the oil sludge is water. A series of experiments were conducted to determine the water content using the Dean and Stark method. In addition, the sulphur content in oil sludge diluted with solvents – light and heavy naphtha, heavy gas oil – was determined.

One of the current main trends in road construction is striving to ensure greater durability of asphalt surfaces. The observed increase in road traffic, especially the increase in heavy goods vehicles in the overall traffic structure, as well as the impact of adverse weather conditions such as prolonged high summer temperatures and low winter temperatures, and the impact of rain and snowfall contribute to reducing the durability of asphalt surfaces. An important material factor that also affects the reduction of the durability of asphalt surfaces is the ageing of asphalt. In the process of rolling the mineral-asphalt mixture, it is affected by elevated temperatures ranging from 165oC to even 200oC, which contributes to the loss of the adhesive-elastic properties of the asphalt. This process intensifies during the exfoliation of the asphalt surface, which is affected by solar radiation and atmospheric waste. To counteract asphalt ageing, work is conducted to modify it using, for example, polymers and various chemical additives, as well as the use of technologies in which asphalt can be used to produce mineral-asphalt mixture at a reduced temperature. The most effective solutions of this type include the technology of water-foamed asphalt. To limit the ageing of 50/70 asphalt in tests, synthetic wax was used as an additive dosed at 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5% by weight, and a surfactant was used at 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% by weight in relation to the asphalt. Studies on the impact of additives on road asphalt 50/70 before and after the water foaming process have been conducted. The change in basic asphalt parameters after RTFOT technological ageing was analysed. A significant impact of additives on the ageing process of 50/70 asphalt has been observed. Synthetic wax has a more intense effect on asphalt 50/70, it slows down the aging of the binder more than the use of a surface-active agent. On the other hand, the use of additives to asphalt 50/70 before its foaming with water has an even more beneficial effect on slowing down the intensity of binder ageing. In summary, the use of synthetic wax and a surfactant as additives to asphalt treated with foamed water will not only help limit the ageing of the binder and ensure the durability of the asphalt surface, but will also play a significant role in producing more environmentally friendly mineral asphalt mixes as a result of lowering the technological temperatures of their production process.

Contemporary construction materials are expected to be recyclable in a closed-loop system, meaning they should allow reuse, after they have lost their original properties while being part of the original building product. This group of materials should undoubtedly include bituminous mixtures, which may be reclaimed during road renewal or alteration projects, and subsequently reused as Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). Noteworthy, RAP performance depends on the properties of the binder it contains, whose visco-elastic behaviour has been affected by the ageing processes. Fortunately enough, these properties of bitumen may be effectively recovered by means of special chemical agents called rejuvenators. This paper presents the results of two-stage research project on this subject. The first stage included testing of the bituminous binder under analysis. It was a 50/70 pen-grade bitumen tested before and after short-term ageing (RTFOT + PAV) and aged binder tested after rejuvenation treatment. Spectroscopic and fractional composition analyses were carried out in addition to determining the basic properties i.e. penetration, softening point, dynamic shear modulus and phase angle. In the second stage of this research project a different material was tested: AC 16 W 50/70 asphalt concrete sourced from a hot-mix asphalt plant. The specimens were made from the fresh mix (control) and the same mix after short- and long-term ageing and after subsequent rejuvenation treatment. The determinations included density, bulk density, water sensitivity, stiffness modulus, resistance to fatigue and low temperature performance determined with the Thermal Stress Restrained Specimen Test (TSRST).The tests of RAP treated with oleyl alcohol ethoxylate phosphate ester carried out as part of this research showed improvement of the performance properties of aged bituminous binders, and thus confirmed the suitability of this agent in road paving applications

Obok badań podstawowych (penetracji, temperatury mięknienia, zespolonego modułu ścinania i kąta przesunięcia fazowego) oznaczono skład grupowy asfaltów oraz wykonano analizy widmowe.

Bitumen used for the production of Hot Mix Asphalt in Poland are produced through the refining process of crude oil. The sourced crude oil can come from various regions of the world and have varying chemical compositions and quantities of asphalt fractions. This, in turn, affects the characteristics of the obtained bitumen during the refining process. Conducted study shows that bitumen derived from different crude oil deposits (Venezuelan and Russian) can significantly influence the functional parameters of the Hot Mix Asphalt. Changes include the stiffness of asphalt layers and changes in stiffness due to aging while operation time, which greatly alter the characteristics of the entire road structure.

Cement–asphalt mortar (CAM) has been widely used as a cushion layer in prefabricated concrete slab tracks. However, the deformation and failure of different CAMs under compression are scarcely understood. In this study, therefore, we studied the compressive deformation and failure modes of CAMs with different asphalt–cement ratios (A/Cs or m(A)/m(C) = 0.2 ~ 1.0) together with the temperature effects, to understand the mechanisms behind their mechanical behaviour. Results indicated that, at room temperature, CAMs with low A/Cs (0.2 ~ 0.4), namely CAM-Ls, deformed and failed in a quasi-brittle manner, whereas CAMs with high A/Cs (0.8 ~ 1.0), namely CAM-Hs, were more like ductile materials. The temperature effect could be negligible for CAM-Ls, but significant for CAM-Hs. Low temperatures would cause a ductile-to-brittle transition in CAM-Hs and high temperatures would pose an adverse effect on their deformation and failure under compression. To understand the deformation and failure mechanisms of different CAMs and the temperature effects, microstructural models for CABs with relevant A/Cs were proposed. The microstructural models of CABs demonstrated that the compressive deformation and failure of CAMs depend primarily on their CABs. It is also indicated that, experimentally and theoretically, the boundary A/C value between CAM-Ls and CAM-Hs might be around 0.6, below which the hardened cement paste (hcp) form the matrix of the CAM, whilst above which the asphalt binder turns to the primary continuous phase in the CAB. Due to the microstructure change in CABs with the increasing A/C, the CAMs transitioned from quasi-brittle to ductile materials under compression.

Stone mastic asphalt is a gap-graded mix and is usually related to its high bitumen content and its skeleton-like constitution. Although famous for its durability, high resistance to fatigue and rutting, issues such as bleeding and premature aging do occur in the mix since it has a high bitumen content and voids due to its gap-graded structure. In order to encounter these problems from affecting the mix, some instances such as adding additives, rejuvenators and stabilizers into the mixture has been implemented. Nowadays, nano materials are being used in the asphalt mixtures and nano titanium is being introduced as a modifier to the asphalt binder in order to improve the mechanical properties of the stone mastic asphalt mix. The related tests done in order to access the improvement are resilient modulus, dynamic creep, moisture susceptibility and binder drain down. The content of nano titanium used in this research are 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%. This study is done to assess the mechanical performance of stone mastic asphalt with nano titanium modified binder.
Każda, nawet najlepiej wykonana, nawierzchnia drogowa z czasem ulega degradacji.
