This article showcases the findings of research conducted at the Faculty of Transport, Electrotechnics, and Informatics of the Technological-Humanistic University in Radom. Initially, it delves into a statistical analysis of measurements procured during automatic ultrasonic testing. By integrating these measurements with distinct features of the diagnostic method and fusing differential coding with traditional lossless compression techniques (like Huffman and dictionary coding), a potent measurement compression algorithm was developed. This algorithm subsequently found application in railway track diagnostics. The primary objective of this article is to illustrate this algorithm's efficiency and benchmark its advantages against other compression techniques. Subsequently, the paper delineates the design of a system tailored for collating operational data and evaluating the reliability and safety of railway automation systems. This concept was actualized under the auspices of a project sponsored by the National Center for Research and Development, PBS3/A6/29/2015. A spotlight will be thrown on the software that acts as an integrative tool, assimilating data from various systems. In its final segments, the article discusses the initiative to harness open systems, premised on the PN-EN 50159:2011 standard, to bolster the safety standards of railway transportation. The first one resulted from the maximum train speed, the second one is the variety of rolling stock used on this line (compartmental and non-compartmental wagons). The part of research concerning collection of measurement material was performed within the framework of completed research work PBS3/A6/29/2015. As a result of conducted in-depth literature analysis as well as performed measurements and calculations, it allowed to develop a model and software for simulating system operation in real conditions. A prototype of this system, accompanied by select research outcomes from railway routes, will be laid out. Ultimately, the article seeks to emphasize the significance of diverse research endeavors that hold the potential to directly enhance the safety and operational efficiency of railway transport.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are increasingly being used in various modes of transport, including rail transport. When this technology is applied to railway traffic control, it is essential to ensure a high level of safety and reliability. The approval of a railway traffic control system requires a safety analysis, which includes hazard analysis and risk analysis. This also includes GNSS-based solutions in terms of their compliance with safety integrity requirements, i.e. THR (Tolerable Hazard Rate) and SIL (Safety Integrity Level) parameters, as defined in normative documents. In the case of railway traffic control systems, the level of dependability of the determined train position, referred to as position integrity, is very important in ensuring safety. Position integrity is affected by many factors, including: errors due to SIS (Signal-In-Space) propagation, multipath errors, signal interference or GNSS receiver errors. In order to improve position integrity, among other things, new data processing methods can be used to improve the accuracy and reliability of measurements. The paper presents the concept of satellite signal processing for precise determination of the position of objects in selected railway systems. The Kalman filter based model of satellite signal filtration and its selected applications, which were tested in the real condition, was presented. The application of Kalman filtration indicated in the paper is a universal method that improves the estimated measurement parameters and can be used in many applications of satellite systems for railway tasks. The applicability of satellite systems to automatic train operation, defect positioning in automatic and manual flaw detection tests, determining track spatial orientation and train integrity control have been considered. The conducted tests confirmed the correctness of the adopted concept and the model of satellite signals filtration developed for this purpose. According to the authors, the described methods can also be used in many other tasks related to rail transport.
The article presents selected results of research in the area of reducing the risk of defects in railway infrastructure and traffic control devices. The first part of the article will discuss selected topics used in a defectoscope car for automated ultrasonic rail inspections related to the identification of joints and flaws. A method based on the identification of joints and flaws using a neural network will be presented. The second part of the article will cover research on the automatic collection of diagnostic data from railway traffic control devices. The solutions presented concern a simulator of railway traffic control device malfunctions, from which data is extracted to populate a database of malfunctions and then used in the inference process. The article will present partial results of research on both systems.
Railway traffic control and signaling systems are safety-related, and thus it is crucial to provide them with an appropriate level of safety. Technological development has led to an increase in the functionality and reliability of these systems, taking into account the high safety requirements. Therefore, the operations involving the design, construction, and maintenance of railway traffic control and signaling systems should include a safety analysis. The safety analysis of railway traffic and signaling systems assumes that a primary event may cause a series of intermediate events, which then may lead to a disaster causing significant material losses and fatalities. Due to the random nature of the occurrences of the adverse events (failures, human errors), the probabilistic methods are often used to estimate risk. One of the risk assessment methods is Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). The authors of the paper conducted a qualitative safety analysis of level crossing protection systems using the FTA method. The requirements for the level crossing protection system were described, which we then used to write out FTA diagrams. The specific technical and quality requirements for railway traffic control and signaling systems result from the need to ensure a high safety level. Risk assessmentis a required step in the evaluation of the safety and reliability of these systems. The authors of the paper applied the FTA method to the safety assessment of the level crossing protection system. The obtained results should be helpful in the process of design new railway traffic control and signaling systems.

W celu oceny bezpieczeństwa i niezawodności tych systemów, musimy podejmować działania w zakresie oceny ryzyka. Autorzy publikacji zastosowali metodę FTA do oceny bezpieczeństwa systemu zabezpieczenia przejazdu. Uzyskane wyniki mogą być pomocne w procesie konstruowania nowych systemów sterowania ruchem kolejowym.
Systemy sterowania ruchem kolejowym odgrywają istotne znaczenie w zapewnieniu bezpieczeństwa przemieszczania osób i przewozu ładunków.

Railway traffic control systems are essential to ensure the safety of passengers and freight transport. The very large number of controlling devices and systems, but also the fact that they are made in different technologies make it very difficult for the infrastructure manager to ensure the required level of reliability. Therefore, it is necessary to support the process of their maintenance with support of the application of technical diagnostic methods. The software M&DC is created mainly for technical solutions of specific manufacturers of railway traffic control systems. Therefore, the author of the article proposed a universal diagnostic method based on Bayesian inference. On the basis of this method and the SNMP protocol, computer software was developed, which is used to diagnose faults in the LCPS.

Railway traffic control systems have a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of railway traffic. Therefore, the basic requirement, in addition to the implementation of necessary system functions, is continuous striving for ensuring the high level of reliability. Contemporary development of railway traffic control systems is associated with the application of modern information and communication technologies, which makes it possible to extend the functionality of these systems by the logging events and selfdiagnostics. However, there are no standards in this area, which considerably complicates the unification of scope and types of acquired diagnostic data as well as their analysis. This, of course, has a negative impact on the maintenance of the systems technical reliability. The authors of the paper have noticed this important problem and have proposed a new diagnostic method for railway traffic control systems, which is based on a probabilistic inference. They also verified the developed diagnostic method by testing it on the level crossing protection system. The obtained results have proved the correctness of the adopted railway traffic control systems diagnosing concept.

Railway traffic control systems play an important role in ensuring the safe movement of persons and goods. They must therefore meet high safety requirements, understood as the absence of unacceptable risks. In railway automation, the use of dedicated technologies prevails at present - that comes from the need to guarantee an adequate level of safety. However, more and more often one can observe a tendency to build railway traffic control systems based on standard technologies called “commercial off-the-shelf” (COTS). An example of such approach is the use of special control elements belonging to the HIMA product family. It is assumed that COTS controllers, which are sold in large quantities as standard components and used in various industrial sectors, will also be increasingly used in safety-related systems, including railway traffic control systems.
In order to minimize the risks associated with the automation of industrial processes, it is necessary to unify standards of safety assessment. The aim of this article is the comparative analysis of safety assessment methods of industrial automation systems. Authors presented two techniques of ensuring safety based on risk analysis, i.e. Performance Level (PL) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) in relation to the applicable standards and regulations.

Railway control devices are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of railway traffic. Despite the continuous development of these devices, like other technical solutions, they are being damaged. However, since railway control devices are safety-related, they are not only required to be reliable, but also to be free from unacceptable risks. The very large number of control devices, the variety of their types, the variety of technical solutions, as well as the specific failure rate make it very difficult to ensure the efficiency of these equipment. Therefore, their operation must be supported by technical diagnostics. Information obtained as a result of technical diagnostics about changes in the technical condition of devices is stored in specific data sets. However, in the case of individual railway lines plants of PKP PLK S.A. these are most often Excel spreadsheets of Microsoft Office. The authors of the article proposed to transfer these data to the MS SQL relational database with the use of proprietary software developed for this purpose.
