Patronage estates, which once played an extremely important role, are now often degraded areas as a result of political changes. Their history, however, is extremely interesting and provides a wealth of information on urban planning and architecture. Their history records stylistic trends and material possibilities depending on the time of construction. Using the example of the development of post-industrial areas, we can make broader observations. A key question, however, remains the future of brownfield sites. Their revitalisation or new development (in the case of the demolition of historic fabric) will reflect changes in worldviews over time, as well as attitudes to these sites and their role in the process of shaping the region’s contemporary architecture.
Suburbanization and urban sprawl, alongside the concept of creating compact cities, highlight the need to repurpose undeveloped, degraded spaces, such as post-industrial and warehouse areas. Revitalizing these spaces involves addressing the land’s physical condition and improving the social and economic well-being of local communities. In many European cities, the late 20th century saw industrial activity dominate. However, after 1989, political changes in Poland led to the relocation of industry from central districts to make room for modern residential and service developments. An example is Warsaw’s Żerań, previously centred around industrial hubs. A key challenge in redeveloping such areas is addressing land contamination, reclaiming degraded post-industrial zones, and eventually revitalizing the space to introduce new functions. Contamination often leaves these areas unused for years, but proper remediation can breathe new life into them. Furthermore, public spaces such as parks and squares in Żerań are often underused, but proper design following cleanup can foster social connections and contribute to a well-functioning urban environment. Revitalizing degraded urban areas ensures rational use of available space, aligning it with desired functions. Identifying and addressing these areas can transform neglected industrial zones into thriving residential and service centres, attracting new residents and investors.

Suburbanizacja i rozrost miast, obok koncepcji tworzenia zwartych miast, podkreślają potrzebę ponownego wykorzystania niezagospodarowanych, zdegradowanych przestrzeni, takich jak obszary poprzemysłowe i magazynowe.
The construction sector’s environmental footprint, accounting for 40% of global CO2 emissions and 30% of waste generation, necessitates rigorous evaluation of sustainable alternatives to demolition. This study quantitatively assesses the environmental advantages of industrial site revitalization versus demolition and new construction, focusing exclusively on material conservation and emission reduction. While existing research often combines environmental with socioeconomic metrics, this analysis isolates ecological impacts through a case study of Radex Park Marywilska in Warsaw, Poland – a representative post-industrial site in a coal-dependent economy. Using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology for 2005-2010 data, we analyze material flows (22% concrete, 3% steel, 15% brick by volume) and calculate avoided emissions using region-specific factors (e.g., 1.8 t CO2/t steel). The results demonstrate that revitalization preserved 72,315 tons of materials and reduced CO2 emissions by 48,217 tons - resulting in significant environmental savings compared to demolition scenarios, and exceeding Central European benchmarks. These savings stem primarily from bypassed demolition waste (30-50% reduction) and avoided new material production, aligning with EU circular economy targets. Key findings include: (1) steel reuse delivers 61% of total emission savings, revealing material-specific leverage points for decarbonization; (2) Poland’s carbon-intensive industrial baseline amplifies the relative benefits of adaptive reuse; and (3) standardized “avoided cost” metrics can bridge policy gaps in sustainable urban planning. The study provides a replicable framework for environmental cost accounting in post-industrial contexts, emphasizing the need for regionally tailored LCA models. We conclude that revitalization is not merely an alternative but an ecological imperative for decarbonizing urban development. Policymakers should prioritize adaptive reuse in climate action plans, leveraging its dual benefits of emission reduction and resource conservation. Future research should expand this methodology to assess the scalability of observed benefits across diverse geographic and industrial contexts.

This paper describes the activities carried out during the revitalization of K.W. Scheibler’s post-factory complex against the background of the transformation of the entire district, called the riverside industrial complexes (posiadła wodno-fabryczne). It was here in the early 19th century that industrial Łódź was born. This study is an overview report, depicting the spatial transformation at different scales and scopes, from a holistic assessment of the value of the existing cultural heritage, through urban planning vision to architectural decisions and implementation. The presented activities are an example of conducting spatial policy systematically and consistently, resulting in the revitalization of the K.W. Scheibler post-factory complex, which constitutes another link in the renewal of the entire district. This is a rare example of a post-industrial complex which fits in the system of public spaces and the green bloodstream of the city through a coherent urban vision for the entire district. The research and design materials come mainly from the collections of the Municipal Urban Planning Office in Łódź, where the authors conducted the process presented at the urban scale in the years 2013–2021.

Przedstawione działania stanowią przykład prowadzenia polityki przestrzennej w sposób systemowy i konsekwentny, czego efektem jest rewitalizacja zespołu pofabrycznego K.W Scheiblera, będąca kolejnym ogniwem w odnowie całej dzielnicy. To rzadki przykład realizacji zespołu poprzemysłowego, który wpisano w system przestrzeni publicznych oraz zielony krwiobieg miasta poprzez spójną wizję urbanistyczną całej dzielnicy. Materiały badawcze i projektowe pochodzą głownie z zasobów Miejskiej Pracowni Urbanistycznej w Łodzi, w której autorzy niniejszego artykułu, w latach 2013–2021, prowadzili opisany proces w skali urbanistycznej.

Contemporary cities struggle with many problems that affect the quality of the housing environment. For this reason, various solutions are being introduced to improve the functioning of residential neighbourhoods. One of them is use diversity, mentioned as important in many concepts regarding the design of contemporary cities. The aim of the article is to analyse the presence of diversity of uses within residential district on the example of Strijp S in Eindhoven. The research methodology includes a review of the literature on the design of multifunctional residential districts, shaping multifunctional complexes, as well as creative cities and temporary solutions. Diversity will be presented on the example of the Strijp S development in Eindhoven at several scales: at the district scale, through the presence of buildings with different uses, through the discussion on multifunctional buildings combining various purposes, and also as the presence of diverse solutions within one functional and spatial typology.
The necessary ecosystem services can be effectively provided through the diverse functioning and processes of ecosystems. Apart from services provided by natural and semi-natural ecosystems, the study on ecosystem development on mineral habitats, established as by-products of mining activity, have revealed surprising results. Unrecognised yet crucial ecosystem services can be provided by novel ecosystems that develop spontaneously on mineral sites created due to human activities, such as mineral mining. These mineral habitats and the ecosystems established de novo provide a wide range of ecosystem services. Modelling ecosystem functioning can simulate and predict the effects of interventions on ecosystem services provided by novel ecosystems. This approach supports adaptive management strategies that maximise desired services while minimising negative impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. Understanding the functioning of novel ecosystems and their ecosystem services is crucial for enhancing resilience, promoting restoration efforts, and implementing sustainable land-use practices. Recognising the importance of ecosystem services provided by novel ecosystems and involving stakeholders in decision-making processes can foster public support for conservation initiatives and promote collaboration among diverse stakeholders. This approach is particularly important given that many activities related to the re-development of post-industrial areas, especially post-mining regions, have fallen short of achieving their objectives. The essential role of ecosystem services provided by natural, semi-natural, and novel ecosystems highlights the importance of the ecosystem functioning modelling approaches. Such approaches are needed to understand and quantify these services in the context of adhering to sustainable development principles during urban development.
Analiza rewitalizacji terenów poprzemysłowych w Zagłębiu Dąbrowskim obejmowała trzy lokalizacje: kopalnię „Saturn”, „Maczki-Bór” i „Grodziec”.

Revitalization of post-mining areas in the Dąbrowa Basin: A study of transformations. The analysis of the revitalization of post-industrial sites in the Dąbrowa Basin focused on the Saturn mine, Maczki-Bór, and Grodziec. The 'Saturn' mine has been transformed into a cultural and tourist space, improving the region's socio-economic situation. The 'Maczki-Bór' mine's land reclamation and conversion into an industrial and service space have positively impacted the local economy. In contrast, the neglected 'Grodziec' mine has led to further degradation and safety problems due to the lack of revitalization activities. Successful revitalization requires appropriate management, investment, and involvement of local communities. Transforming brownfield sites into attractive public spaces supports regional development, improves the inhabitants' quality of life, and positively impacts the local economy.
Climate change poses a great threat to humanity, and since the construction industry is one of the biggest contributors to global warming, it is essential to impose change on this particular sector. The revitalisation process, being in a way the recycling of the built environment, provides a sustainable solution. Additionally, the revitalisation of brownfields in particular is crucial to the continuity and preservation of the urban texture, which in turn are vital for reshaping the urban identity of post-industrial cities. This review article outlines the genesis of deindustrialisation and revitalisation processes and their correlation and impact on the environment. By providing examples of successfully executed projects, it aims to prove that brownfield revitalisation is an essential tool for the transformation of former industrial settlements into attractive and sustainable cities.

In the last decade residential development in Krakow has been particularly intensive. In consequence of many parts of the city being left without any local zoning plan, land designated for property development is developed to the maximum while the overreaching vision for the area is missing. This often has an adverse effect on the quality of public spaces, the characteristics of which is merely resultant from the development process developed with little public green space. This article presents an analysis of the functional and spatial transformation of the “Ludwinów-Mateczny” area in Krakow, which has been developed so far in spite of the lack of a local zoning plan, attractive not only in terms of its location, but also because of its proximity to valuable natural areas. It presents the results of a study of the local housing development process over the period starting approximately in 2010 and ending in 2022. The research was based on analyses of available planning and statistical documents, the author’s quantitative analysis of changes in the land designation (purpose) and use structure, as well as on the field research.

Due to the specificity of post-industrial areas, it is necessary to perform a number of additional analyzes in order to reduce the risk of failure of construction projects carried out there. Therefore, it is justified to develop a tool that would support decision-making on the possibility of transforming post-industrial areas into housing purposes. The aspect that starts this analysis is the limitations resulting from legal regulations, which has been discussed in this study.

Purpose: the main purpose of this paper is to present the idea of a new e-service concerning post-mining areas, which is being developed in the Silesian Voivodeship and which is expected to increase their attractiveness. Design/methodology/approach: The new e-service is based on the development of a system for the inventory and valorisation of post-mining areas. In the course of the work, a field inventory of the areas is carried out, which involves collecting information on their location, configuration in relation to main transport routes, surface configuration and the manner of their management. These data are collected in a database system, which is additionally linked with algorithms enabling benchmarking, assessment of ecosystem services and evaluation of investment attractiveness. All of this will create a new e-service that will enable decisions to be made regarding their further use by various stakeholders. Findings: The value of post-mining and post-industrial areas in the processes of economic transformation of the Silesian Voivodeship and the needs of stakeholders for information regarding these areas. Research limitations/implications: The results provide a basis to improve the effectiveness of regional development planning, especially solutions for SME involvement and cooperation. The results confirm, that a detailed study of entrepreneurs' needs should be included as the main instrument for the implementation and for gaining reliable information on the effectiveness of implemented solutions in the field of innovation support. Practical implications: The Silesia Voivodeship has a large number of post-industrial areas, for which the state and degree of degradation is often undefined. Building new e-services for a region in transition is an important factor for its competitiveness. The OPI-TPP 2.0 service allows the valorisation of sites and additionally provides information to potential investors on the necessary planning, investment and environmental measures. Originality/value: The contribution of the research to the development e-services in post-mining land management.

Climate changes, manifested by extreme weather phenomena, force cities to properly prepare their territories. Post-industrial areas appear in downtowns and they have appropriate features to be used for water retention, reduction of the urban heat island phenomenon etc. In the Upper-Silesian agglomeration, all hard coal mines are to be closed within the next 30 years. However, their use to climate aims requires changes in the policy of the municipal authorities.
