Construction projects are invariably subject to risk. The daily demand for construction materials can be modelled using random variables. This facilitates the use of computer simulation to support supply management. The aim of this paper is to present simulation model to support sizing the safety stock assuming a limited capacity of on-site storage, in order to reduce the inventory management costs of construction products delivered to the construction site.

Construction materials reflect not only technological progress but also cultural heritage and environmental adaptation. In Central Europe, the Visegrád Four countries (Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia) offer a unique case study in the transition from traditional materials such as timber, adobe, and stone to modern, eco-conscious solutions. Understanding this evolution is essential to evaluate how these countries are responding to climate challenges and EU sustainability goals. The aim of this study is to compare the historical and contemporary use of construction materials in the Visegrád Four, and to assess how these choices align with current sustainability practices, including energy efficiency, circular construction, and renewable energy integration. This research is based on qualitative comparative analysis of secondary data, national construction strategies, and case examples of public and private sector projects across the V4 region. Materials were classified chronologically—traditional, modernist/socialist era, and contemporary— highlighting shifts in usage, technological innovation, and ecological performance. Tables and charts were developed to illustrate patterns and trends. The findings show that while traditional materials like timber and brick remain prevalent in rural and heritage contexts, there is a growing adoption of sustainable materials such as cross-laminated timber (CLT), recycled concrete, and prefabricated panels. Czechia and Poland show advanced engagement in green certifications (e.g., BREEAM, LEED), solar integration, and smart glazing systems, while Slovakia and Hungary exhibit a slower, but visible transition. Challenges persist in the form of economic disparities, fragmented policy implementation, and social perception of older building types. The Visegrád Four countries are gradually transitioning toward greener construction practices, balancing historical identity with modern innovation. Material choices play a central role in this shift. Accelerating the adoption of circular and low-carbon materials can strengthen regional compliance with EU directives and contribute to more resilient, energy-efficient architecture. This comparative insight underlines the need for coordinated sustainability strategies tailored to each country’s material legacy and socio-economic context.

Repairing tunnels is an essential part of infrastructure upkeep that guarantees commuter safety and the durability of the tunnels. A variety of materials, including cement-based ones like concrete, shotcrete, and mortar, are needed for tunnel repairs. Yet, the hunt for substitute materials has been sparked by the negative environmental effect of cement manufacturing and the accompanying expenses. It has been suggested that geopolymers, a type of materials that develop from the reaction between aluminosilicate minerals and alkali activators, might replace cement-based materials in tunnel restoration. This review paper focuses on evaluating the potential of geopolymers towards applications for tunnel mending because they are a new material with many possible uses.

The release of phosphorus from construction materials, including those used in environmental engineering facilities, is an underestimated problem. Improper or accidental selection of materials for systems such as filtration or retention structures may lead to surface water contamination with phosphorus. Therefore, it is recommended to test materials and select those with the lowest potential of phosphorus release in all constructions that come into contact with water and discharge excess water to receivers. The aim of this study was to adopt, refine, and test a method for analyzing phosphorus release from mineral materials of various types and origins. As a result of the research, a simplified procedure for testing materials was proposed, which can be applied in most environmental and chemical laboratories. The procedure developed in this work significantly reduces the consumption of chemicals and the amount of wastewater and waste generated in the material assessment. It can serve as an effective and simple tool for selecting materials for green infrastructure facilities, such as green roofs or rain gardens.

Construction Products Regulation), określających zharmonizowane warunki wprowadzania do obrotu wyrobów budowlanych.

The article pertains to two elements in the architecture of a single-family house that impact the ecosystem: the use of building materials and energy consumption. The issue is considered within the framework of analyzing material and energy changes affecting the natural environment. In the research, various methods were employed, including the concept of the 'shade mechanism' as a limit for the ecological footprint, as well as the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. Three types of solutions were examined: the materials used in the building structure and their energy demands. The research results presented were analyzed with regard to the relationship between building materials, energy consumption, and their negative emissions (potential greenhouse effect). The objectives of the analyses were determined with regard to the changing climate and the possibilities of controlling pollutant emissions, taking into account the ability to minimize and control the adverse environmental impact as well as its enhancement and regeneration in the architectural design process.

Modern industries, including those in construction, increasingly uses various types of polymer materials, which should be characterized by good mechanical properties. In this work, the effect of strain rate (10, 20, and 50 mm/min) on the tensile and properties of three polymers (high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinylchloride (PVC)) was studied. A twin-screw extruder was used for the preparation of samples. In order to study the influence of strain rate, tensile strength was used. Mechanical property results show that the tensile properties, tensile strength, and elastic modulus increased with the increase in the strain rate, while elongation at the break point decreased.

Modern city buses are made of various construction materials and the share of material groups has changed over the decades. By replacing heavy materials for structural elements or bus components with their lighter counterparts, the kerb weight of the bus can be reduced by up to several hundred kilograms. This article presents the issues of the development of city bus design in terms of passenger space comfort and bus structure in the context of reducing the vehicle's own weight since the 1970s. The main changes in vehicle design allowing for reducing the weight of structural elements of bodies and chassis as well as the main assemblies in city buses are presented as well as research on body types in terms of aerodynamics, safety and travel comfort. It has been shown that reducing the weight of the bus does not negatively affect its load capacity and the new bus designs are equipped with safety and comfort systems, including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), ASR (Automatic Stability Regulation), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and air conditioning in the passenger space. Thanks to modern light construction materials, we gain the opportunity to improve safety and comfort without losing the transport capabilities developed as a result of the development of city buses over the years.

The treatment of wastewater certainly contributes to reduce water pollution on environment, but it also generates large amounts of water treatment sludge (WTS) which must be further treated to reduce potential health risks and environmental impacts. However, from a circular economy approach, WTS should be considered as a byproduct which can replace natural raw materials for construction industry. Moreover, this sector is urged to reduce its CO2 footprint which is mainly produced by the embodied impact of construction materials during the initial and final phase, in a life cycle assessment perspective. For these reasons, this paper assesses WTS for replacing natural clay in brick industry and it also evaluates the impact of adding concrete waste (CW) to the blend for improving technological properties of the so-made bricks. Thus, bricks containing sludge and CW (i.e. from 0 to 20%) have been successfully manufactured by firing at 1000°C and tested. It was observed that water absorption and apparent porosity values increase while bulk density, compressive strength and thermal conductivity values decrease by depending on the increment in CW content. The bulk density of the fired bricks having 5-20 wt% CW content ranged from 1.72 to 2.10 g/cm3 , compressive strength ranged from 8.9 to 20.2 MPa, water absorption from 7.9 to 17.5% and thermal conductivity from 0.889 to 0.659 W/m K. Because of these reasons, it is concluded that this novel brick made by WTS and CW can be properly manufactured at industrial scale, shows good performance and reduces environmental issues of both brick industry and water treatment plants.
