Deeds speak louder than words – the role of ESG factors and climate literacy in shaping consumer trust in Polish banks

The growing importance of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors has influenced the shaping of social attitudes while also having a significant effect on the banking sector and its approach to business strategy development. The aim of this study is to assess the degree of consumer sensitivity to ESG issues within the Polish banking sector and to analyse how these attitudes shape trust in this sector. The attitudes of Polish society in this context are evaluated on the basis of 1,039 computer-assisted web interviews (CAWIs) conducted in May 2023. The data collected from the survey are then analysed via logistic regression. The findings of the study indicate that consumers are more sensitive to social factors than to environmental factors within the ESG context. However, as shown by respondents' answers, the impact of environmental issues on the overall level of trust and public perception of banking institutions should not be underestimated. The results of this study also highlight the significant role of climate literacy among respondents in shaping trust in banks whose activities negatively affect the natural environment.

Rosnące znaczenie czynników środowiskowych, społecznych i ładu korporacyjnego (ESG) wpływa na kształtowanie postaw społecznych, mając jednocześnie znaczący wpływ na sektor bankowy i jego podejście do budowania strategii biznesowej. Celem niniejszego badania jest ocena wrażliwości konsumentów na kwestie ESG w polskim sektorze bankowym oraz analiza wpływu tych postaw na kształtowanie zaufania do tego sektora. Postawy społeczeństwa polskiego w tym kontekście zostały ocenione na podstawie 1 039 wywiadów CAWI, które przeprowadzono w maju 2023 roku. Dane zebrane na podstawie ankiety zostały następnie przeanalizowane za pomocą regresji logistycznej. Wyniki przeprowadzonego badania wskazują, że konsumenci są bardziej wrażliwi na czynniki społeczne niż na środowiskowe w kontekście ESG. Niemniej jednak, jak pokazały odpowiedzi respondentów, wpływ kwestii środowiskowych na ogólny poziom zaufania i postrzeganie instytucji bankowych nie może być lekceważony. Wyniki badania podkreślają również istotne znaczenie wiedzy o zmianie klimatu wśród respondentów dla utraty zaufania do banku, którego działalność szkodzi środowisku naturalnemu.

Technological and environmental drivers of changes in business model. The film industry perspective

This article provides the first research on the importance of technological and environmental factors in the context of innovation and strategic management in the film industry. The study employs semi structured interviews, a systematic literature review (SLR) and a computer-assisted web interview (CAWI). First, based on the interviews and SLR, it identifies the most important technological and environmental film business model adaption factors, four in each category. Then, the CAWI results indicate that technological factors supported by social and economic changes substantially impact the film business models, while environmental factors are of minor importance, although noticeable. As with any research, ours also has some limitations. The surveys were conducted with a limited number of experts who agreed to participate in the study. At the same time, the findings of SLR depend on the researchers’ choice of searched keywords, the language of the scrutinised texts and the selection of databases.

Artykuł jest pierwszym opracowaniem poświęconym badaniom znaczenia czynników technologicznych i środowiskowych w kontekście innowacji i zarządzania strategicznego w branży filmowej. W badaniu wykorzystano wywiady częściowo ustrukturyzowane, systematyczny przegląd literatury oraz wywiad internetowy wspomagany komputerowo (CAWI). Po pierwsze, na podstawie wywiadów i systematycznego przeglądu literatury, zidentyfikowano po cztery najważniejsze technologiczne i środowiskowe czynniki adaptacyjne filmowych modeli biznesowych. Następnie, na podstawie wyników badania CAWI, wskazano, że czynniki technologiczne wspierane zmianami społeczno-gospodarczymi w istotny sposób wpływają na modele biznesowe dystrybucji filmów, podczas gdy czynniki środowiskowe mają zauważalne, jednak mniejsze znaczenie. Jak każde badanie, również i to ma ograniczenia. Badania ankietowe przeprowadzono z ograniczoną liczbą ekspertów, którzy zgodzili się wziąć udział w badaniu, a wyniki systematycznego przeglądu literatury zależą od wyboru przez badaczy wyszukiwanych słów kluczowych, języka analizowanych tekstów oraz doboru baz danych.

The goal of the study is to show how the restrictions on commercial businesses affected travel behaviour among residents of a large city in Central Europe (here: Lodz, Poland). To achieve this objective, a survey was conducted in autumn 2021 on a cohort of over 6,000 Lodz residents aged 13+ using the mixed-mode CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) and CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interviewing) techniques. The research sample size reflected the population demographics was representative. The results were utilised to identify particular groups of residents with specific transport and consumer behaviour using the clustering method. Five clusters were determined in which a correlation between the respondents’ traits (i.e., age and occupation) and transport and consumer behaviour could be discerned. Since both the oldest and the youngest respondents display low mobility (especially on Sundays), the Sunday retail restrictions have had little impact on the way they organise their time. People of working age (30-44 and 45-64 years old) exhibit different patterns, however. Being the most mobile population group, they declare that the restrictions have had a negative impact on their time management.

The Internet as a tool for conducting social research

The increasing availability of information and communication technologies affects the methodology of social research. Researchers are using the Internet in their research more frequently and incorporating a variety of techniques, including web surveys, personal interviews and focus group interviews, observations, and content analyses. The new medium carries not only capabilities but also limitations.

W opracowaniu przedstawione zostały możliwości wykorzystania i adaptacji określonych narzędzi na potrzeby badań nad obronnością i bezpieczeństwem. Wydaje się, że współcześnie nie wykorzystano jeszcze całego potencjału istniejących możliwości w zakresie technik i narzędzi wspierających metody prowadzenia badań naukowych w tym szczególnym i trudnym obszarze. Autor jest doktorantem Akademii Obrony Narodowej w dziedzinie nauk społecznych w dyscyplinie nauk o obronności. Prezentowaną metodę z powodzeniem wykorzystał przy realizacji dysertacji pod tytułem Zarządzanie bezpieczeństwem informacji jednostki wojskowej specjalnego przeznaczenia, co umożliwiło zebranie reprezentatywnego materiału badawczego, gdy wydawało się już to niemożliwe do osiągnięcia ze względu na istniejące uwarunkowania, które towarzyszyły podjętej tematyce oraz tak trudny obszar badawczy.

The article presents methodological possibilities of applying and adaptation of particular tools for research on defense and security. It seems that the whole array of existing possibilities, in as far as techniques and tools assisting methods, of conducting scientific research in such a specific and difficult field, is not always practiced. Author is a Ph.D. candidate at The Polish National Defense University in a discipline of defense studies. Presented method was confirmed in his research thesis under a title of “Information security management of military unit for special use”. In his task he did an empirical research, gathering material representing particular problems, not easily obtainable, because of existing circumstances in this difficult research field.

The article presents a method for the support of the transfer of innovative technologies to industry in which ICT systems for the realisation of remote interviews CAWI are used. The author discusses the formal aspects of the functioning of the CAWI method and presents an original survey system, which constitutes a part of the IT Platform designed at the Institute for Sustainable Technologies - National Research Institute (ITeE - PIB) in Radom, whose aim is to facilitate the operations of intermediary organisations in the knowledge transformation and technology transfer process. The structure of the solution, together with its functional properties and areas of application are shown. The author also compares and contrasts selected questionnaire methods in terms of their advantages and drawbacks so as to indicate the solution that would most effectively support the process of practical innovation dissemination. Additionally, the research and application problems identified in the course of author's investigations are discussed and the cutting-edge properties of the solution designed are indicated.

W artykule przedstawiono metodykę wspomagania procesów transferu innowacyjnych technologii do praktyki gospodarczej z wykorzystaniem teleinformatycznych systemów dedykowanych do realizacji zdalnych badań ankietowych typu CAWI. Omówiono podstawy formalne funkcjonowania metody CAWI oraz zaprezentowano opracowany oryginalny system ankietowy, wchodzący w skład zaprojektowanej w Instytucie Technologii Eksploatacji - Państwowym Instytucie Badawczym (ITeE - PIB) Platformy Informatycznej wspierającej funkcjonowanie organizacji działających na rzecz skutecznej transformacji i transferu wyników badań naukowych do praktyki gospodarczej. Przedstawiono architekturę rozwiązania, jego cechy funkcjonalne oraz obszary zastosowań. Dokonano porównania wybranych metod ankietowych pod względem wad i zalet w celu wyłonienia rozwiązania skutecznie wspomagającego transfer innowacyjnych technologii do praktyki gospodarczej. Omówiono zidentyfikowane problemy badawcze i aplikacyjne, które należało rozwiązać podczas projektowania i implementacji systemu. Wskazano innowacyjne cechy opracowanego rozwiązania.
