Obszar śródmiejski to obszar największych wartości i znaczenia w skali miasta.

Assuming that the cultural values have a great impact on the level of downtown attractiveness, the author of the present thesis focuses on a specific form of their renewal, namely downtown cultural space revitalization. In this work, the cultural space is understood as a particular kind of downtown public space, characterised by the presence of both historical and contemporary cultural values, or the existing or potential cultural functions. In order to create the new city quality, one needs to incorporate downtown cultural values. The city downtown is the area of the highest value and importance in the whole city. Its revitalization through the integration of the social and spatial downtown cultural space is to increase the level of the entire city attractiveness. The present thesis focuses on the creation of the planning instrument to be used in the downtown revitalization process. Such an instrument consists of two elements: Integrated System of Cultural Space (ISCP) and Cultural Investiment Offer (CIO). The following method consists in the ISCP system, in which all the activities connected with revitalization should promote the cultural function, alongside with the commerce and services, introduced to the examined area according to the rules defined in the CIO. The author suggests conducting downtown renewal in accordance with the idea of heritage planning and active preservation or activization. The planning instrument fonned in this way will help to direct the revitalization process and increase the investment control in the downtown area.

Jednakże atrakcyjność funkcjonalna i społeczna to jej słabe strony.

This years summer has been full o unique experiences, after students from the Faculty of Architecture from the Poznań University of technology had a chance to participate in an international research camp seminar in Italy. This was a next step in the polish- Italian cooperation which took place between 26th of July and the 4th of August in small town Sabbioneta, 40km away from Mantova. This kind of an urban structure, quite popular in Europe during renaissance has been well thought. Sabbioneta along with polish Zamość are considered to be the few examples of an ideal city. An ideal city is famous of it's urban structure- it was well thought through and planned from the beginning to the end. Commenced in the '80s during the 20th century a big attempt in the cities historical upgrade initiated many projects involving the regrowth of the cities former glory. This years polish-Italian camp seminar was kept in this kind of atmosphere. The professors: Giancarlo Leoni, Carlo Peraboni, Francesco Caprini, Marco Caprini, Maciej Janowski, Dominika Pazder, Adam Nadolny, and the students: Cristina Bianchini, Federica Cobelli, Katarzyna Grajkowska, Karolina Groszek, Paulina Matłoka, Marcin Nowicki, Mario Pan, Adam Profaska, Agata Rachuba, Andrzej Resterny, Severino Ros-setto, Natalie Schmidt, Kamila Steinke, Tomasz Tomaniak. Due to the variety of the discussed subjects during the camp seminar, students have been participating in at least 2 English spoken lectures a day. Well prepared data enabled students to skip the pre- planning inventarization phases and pass straight to the designing process. The domain of the first group was to take care of the town's two main gates: Porta Vittoria and Porta Imperiale. The teams aim was to suggest new functions apart from communication purpose. The second group worked on the difficulties on the ancient square-Piazza d'Armi, which arose after the destructions of Gonzaga's fortress caused in Napoleon's times. The misused throughout decades space in the town centre was to gain a new urban frame and a human friendly atmosphere. The third group was involved in redesigning the north-western part of the walls, which despite of it's attractive location was not exposed enough in it's urban structure. The fourth group chose Piazza Ducale as their topic, the main square in Sabbioneta which currently is sadly used as a big parking space. The final exhibition, that was organized in Palazzo Forte showed the local authorities the hidden potential that Sabbioneta always had. The students presented over 16 AO format posters. The interesting fact is that each groups project overlapped and supplemented one another. The project of rebuilding Porta Vittoria was connected with the pedestrian walkway alongside the fortification. The interesting redesign and new shape of Piazza Ducale along with the skilful rejoindance with Piazza d'Armi concluded in regaining it's representative form. In conclusion - the camp seminar in Sabbioneta can be counted as a successful one. Each group acquired new experiences in planning as well as in organization. Polish students had a great opportunity to visit the southern Lombardy and experience it's culture, architecture and the unique landscape of the surrounding valleys. Faculties of both universities had tightened up their bonds, which is going to result in next year's camp in Zamość -the polish ideal city. We should hope that the outcome will be equally satisfactory as the Sabbionetan camp.

The aim of the workshop programme is the creation of the base for cultural events in the town. The solution proposed by us is the development of "Piazza Ducale", which is a car park at present and would involve the new function of the square, a new pavement and architectural details. The project is based on the idea of water appliances, such as an oblong water pool and a fountain. The pavement would comprise of stone slabs which would limit the road traffic in the square. The channel is partially covered by steel grating to facilitate pedestrian traffic. The steel arc fountain cuts the square diagonally, forming a water curtain, which will improve the micro - climate during hot days. The water wall divides the space of the square, which in turn will create inter-related interiors. The new divide will give a feeling of intimacy for all the users of the square attractions. At the same time, the water curtain transparency and the fountain will allow the square to be perceived as an entirety, so the structure becomes interactive and sensitive to the recipients needs. Furthermore, there are new light spots and seats designed on the square. The main goal of the project is to generally change the function of the square from current escaping space into an area where it is worth stopping to enjoy the planned and surrounding attractions.

Dotyczy to rewitalizacji osiedli z lat 50.-70. XX wieku.

The gathered conclusions helped the students to find exact solutions to the existing in Winogrady residential area problems. The buildings of Castorama and Kaufland were found nondescript and boring and not fit to the existing surroundings. So as to look for the new architectural form and the new, morę desirable function of these buildings, the students put a lot of efforts in the design process. The solutions were really interesting: Castorama was converted into the centre of recreation and cultural function with the fresh exterior image and new division of the inner space. That idea was presented as the model-idea for the revitalization of that kind of buildings.

Poznań Faculty of Architecture with the cooperation with Milano Uniyersity of Technology organized Polish-Italian workshop in summer 2006, that took place in the city of Poznań. The students were to examine the areas of the following housing estates in Poznań: Przyjaźni, Kosmonautów and Pod Lipami. The reason why these topics had been chosen is that architects-teachers believe that kind of areas could be treated as "an experimental rangę" for young students of architecture. The work on real urban tissue, with the existing spatial context and the difficulties this situation generates, helps students to widen their knowledge and teach them to cooperate with the other members of the design groups. This year the following teams took part in the international workshop: Professors: Maciej Janowski, Dominika Pazder, Adam Nadolny, Marina Molon, Eleonora Bersani, Giancarlo Leoni, Umberto Pollazzo; Assistants: Luigi Frazzi, Stefania Manni, Paolo Moretto, Andrea Treu, Laura Brani, Piętro Messori, Emilano Alberto Righi; and the students: Marcin Nowicki, Magdalena Trocka, Joanna Grześkowiak, Olga Haus-mann, Agnieszka Nowakowska, Anna Ptaszyńska, Magdalena Zając, Alina Zajączkowska, Jakub Stroiński, Maciej Burdalski, Florinda Boschetti, Maria Chiappa, Paolo Delia Porta, Francesca Farrarini, Sabino Rubini, Sergio Savino, Federico Tinti. The activities were planned to be realized on various levels and stages. First stage of design seminary was devoted to the survey of the area. Surprisingly, the condition and archi-tectural image of Winogrady, turned out to be far better than it had been expected. The advantages of the urban plan of long and high blocks of flats surrounded by green, arę em-phasized morę in the comparison with the newly-built (2001) dwellings of TBS (cheap social buildings) and with the group of eight buildings being erected at present along Na-ramowicka street. One of Italian professors joked that there was really nothing to be im-proved. It is very common for the architects to say 'I would do it better'. Polish and Italian professors and students decided to follow this saying. In the second stage of the workshops, they were to work out the idea of the new master plan so as to correct all the irregularities that had appeared within the years. There was also a lecture presented by Marta Świderska and Ewa Mieloch from Town Planning Office City of Poznań, who gave some comments to the plan of Winogrady that, is nów being drawn up. As a result of long-lasting discussions and consultations, three conceptions of the revi-talization of examined area emerged. The students pointed out the need of improving the existing communication system in there, and they also criticized the uncontrolled develop-ment of the area, where the new buildings arę being erected paying no attention to the spatial context and surroundings. There was underlined the ąuestion of the inhabitants of the Winogrady residential area as well: retired and old people on one hand, and a number of students, young couples or singles on the other. According to this, one should expect the need of rearranging existing buildings and create a new ąuality of life in the foreseeable future time. At the end, all the conclusions were gathered to be used during the third, finał stage of the workshop. At that time the task was to fmd solutions to the important for Winogrady problems. The students formed Polish-Italian groups so as to work together and learn to cooperate. One of these problems was the ąuestion of changing the fiat arrangement in the process of combining smaller flats and to mąkę bigger the surface of living, improve its functional-ity and standard. The results were surprising: the forms of the existing blocks of flats with the unchangeable function turned into the interesting structures of high flexibility. There was also very significant to preserve and take best advantage of the existing green areas. The other problem was connected with the huge surfaces of Kaufland and Cas-torama: the students proposed the alterations in the architectural image of these buildings so as to help change the nondescript objects into morę interesting forms. In the end it is needed to add that summer international workshop was really fruitful. In the cooperative work of Polish and Italian students really interesting projects were worked out. That is also to be accentuated, that owing to this workshops, we appreciated the hidden charm of the urban structures like Winogrady. We can discuss their ąuality, character and usefulness, but we must admit that there was a complete and clear idea from the very be-ginning of their creation. The other, also crucial aspect of the workshop, was the opportu-nity for Polish and Italian students and professors to get to know and compare different way of thinking about architecture and design methods. We hope that it was the beginning of long-lasting international cooperation and that in future there will be also such a nice atmosphere during the joint work.
