The motif of the city in art: a study of changes in perception and meaning in succesive eras

The portrayal of the city in art has evolved over the centuries, reflecting social, artistic, and philosophical trans formations. The aim of this article is to trace these changes by analyzing the depiction of city fragments in paintings from various eras. The research method employed consists of analyzing three main elements: ico nography, semiotics, and spatial analysis. These approaches facilitate an understanding of how artists depict ed the city, its hierarchy, dynamics, and the relationships between its individual components. The city is exam ined as a space with diverse symbolic meanings sacrum, profanum, utopia, and dystopia. It can be a spiritual space, as in the case of Jerusalem or Rome in religious art; an everyday reality with its streets, squares, and marketplaces; an ideal city expressing harmony and order, as seen in Renaissance urban planning; or a space characterized by chaos, destruction, and dehumanization, as depicted in works associated with indus trialization and modernism. The article also analyzes the evolution of the city's silhouette: from the enclosed walls of medieval towns to the skyscraper-dominated skylines of 21st-century metropolises. Furthermore, selected paintings from different epochs are presented to demonstrate how the imagery of cities transformed in response to prevailing ideas and values. The conclusions indicate that the representation of cities in art serves as a mirror reflecting shifts in the understanding of both urban space and human experience.

Miasto w sztuce na przestrzeni wieków zmieniało swoje oblicze, odzwierciedlając przemiany społeczne, artystyczne i filozoficzne. Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie tych zmian poprzez analizę sposobu przedstawiania fragmentów miasta na obrazach z różnych epok. W artykule zastosowano metodę badawczą formie analizy trzech głównych elementów: ikonografia, semiotyka oraz analiza przestrzeni, które umożliwiają zrozumienie, jak artyści przedstawiali miasto, jego hierarchię, dynamikę oraz relacje między poszczególnymi elementami. Miasto jest rozpatrywane jako przestrzeń o różnych symbolicznych znaczeniach – sacrum, profanum, utopia i dystopia. Może być przestrzenią duchową, jak w przypadku Jerozolimy czy Rzymu w sztuce religijnej, co dzienną rzeczywistością z jej ulicami, placami i targowiskami, a także idealnym miastem wyrażającym harmonię i porządek, jak w renesansowych planach urbanistycznych, lub przestrzenią pełną chaosu, zniszczenia i dehumanizacji, jak w dziełach związanych z industrializacją i modernizmem. W artykule analizowana jest także ewolucja sylwety miasta – od zamkniętych murów średniowiecznych miast po zdominowane przez wieżowce „skyline” metropolii XXI wieku. Zostają również zaprezentowane wybrane obrazy malarskie z różnych epok, ukazujące, jak zmieniały się obrazy miast w zależności od panujących idei i wartości. Wnioski wskazują, że obrazy miast w sztuce stanowią zwierciadło zmian w rozumieniu przestrzeni miejskiej oraz ludzkiego doświadczenia.

Daniel Vetter (1592-1669), Czech in origin, was a resident of Leszno 1632-1656. In 1638, he published there a work in Polish titled "Iceland or Short describing the Islandyji island” which is the pioneering characteristics of social relations and nature of this secret island. However, the descriptions of the morphology, hydrography and geothermal conditions it is possible to find the first signs of geotourism of Iceland. The paper puts emphasis on Vetter's remarks and observations concerning geological features. It pays special attention to the mountain and upland morphology of the island, to volcanoes, thermal water geysers and other aspects of the complicated hydrographic network. Enthusing about the stone landscape of Iceland, Vetter inspired the author to deliberations upon the role and the meaning of the symbolism ofstone in the life, beliefs and the magic of Icelanders.

Niniejszy esej jest próbą zwartego, a zarazem bieżącego przeglądu przeszłości i perspektyw zaawansowanego stylu postmodernistycznego we współczesnej architekturze. Mając właśnie to na względzie, autorzy prezentowanego tekstu skupiają swą uwagę na obecnych relacjach retrospekcji między architekturą inspirowaną zarówno modernizmem, jak i postmodernizmem, który nabiera cech nowego symbolizmu ożywionego imagologią połączoną z ideami estetyki ekologicznej.

This essay is an attempt at a concise and current review of the past and perspectives of the advanced post-modernist style in contemporary architecture. Considering the above, the authors of the presented text have focused their attention on current relations between architecture inspired by both modernism and post-modernism, which acquires features of a new symbolism enlivened by imagology combined with ideas of ecological aesthetics.
