This article analyses selected aspects of Japanese aesthetic philosophy, such as wabi-sabi, ma, and the significance of light and shadow, in the context of their application in minimalist architecture. The aim of the study is to examine the possibilities of implementing these principles in a European context. Minimalism is presented as a well-considered concept based on the quality of materials, spatial relationships and the evocation of emotions in the user. The analyses carried out are illustrated by selected projects from Poland and the author’s own design for a yoga and meditation centre in Roztocze. The research findings confirm that the adaptation of these principles is possible and offers the potential for valuable outcomes, provided they are interpreted and adapted to the local context, without literal imitation.

Public transport has a significant impact on sustainable urban mobility, but how parents travel and how early they expose their children to it are also crucial in shaping their future mobility preferences. This research examines the relationship between children's perceptions and their intended travel behavior, as well as the commuting decisions made by their parents, particularly in car-dependent urban environments. A purposive sample method was employed to collect data online from children aged 13 to 17 years, predominantly from households with significant private vehicle utilization in Malaysia. Feasibility limitations constrained the sample size; however, the targeted methodology for a comprehensive examination of context-specific trends. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was utilized to evaluate the correlations among parental commuting habits, children's self-confidence, and their openness to considering public transportation as a feasible future alternative. The results emphasize the significance of early psychosocial factors on transportation behavior and stress the necessity for strategies that enhance children's awareness and confidence in sustainable mobility alternatives.
The article presents the problem of the development and revitalization of abandoned buildings and ways of adapting them to new functions. Especially in shrinking cities. The shrinking of cities and towns in the 21st century can be observed in many regions of Poland, Japan, and the world. The city of Łódź in Poland, which has the largest population decline of all large agglomerations in our country, was selected for analysis. Attention was drawn to a similar situation in Tokyo and on the island of Naoshima in Japan. The aim of the research was to show the differences in solutions for the adaptation of historic buildings and the preservation of authentic substance that exist in these countries. The Japanese perceive the world not as a collection of unchanging substances, but as a process of constant change, while maintaining the authenticity of ideas. In Poland, on the other hand, the Western philosophy of the world is cultivated, which consists in striving to preserve the authenticity of matter.

The primary objectives of geoparks are to conserve geoheritage, enhance public awareness and understanding of geoscience, and drive sustainable economic growth in local communities. Education acts as the cornerstone in achieving these three objectives, as it provides the necessary foundation for their realization. This study proposes a new educational framework to promote the sustainable development of geoparks by evaluating the effecacy of the past geoeducation program. Specifically, this study focused on the Tokachi-Shikaoi Geopark and Hokkaido Shikaoi High School. A mixed methodology was employed, including content analysis of the textbooks, online questionnaire surveys of high school students, and field interviews with key informants. The results revealed that while geoeducation with well-prepared textbooks was encouraged in schools in Shikaoi Town until 2018, there is a need to revitalize geopark education in an alternative way for the future. We proposed a new partnership framework for the educational program among the geopark, universities, elementary, junior high, and high schools, and other stakeholders to maximize the geopark resources in the proposed program through the effective use of existing textbook assets. The results of the questionnaire surveys found that not only indoor learning with textbooks, but also outdoor learning at geosites is important. The results of the interview survey suggested the need to offer training and support for schoolteachers. To address budget constraints, this study proposed the inclusion of support from universities and the introduction of e-textbooks featuring geopark-related knowledge. This study highlights the crucial role of education in promoting sustainable development in Tokachi-Shikaoi Geopark. The insights gained have broader implications for education in other geoparks, offering valuable guidance for enhancing the quality and effectiveness of education in geoparks.
While evaluating the concept of well-being for sustainability, which is defined as the feeling of having the physical and psychological resources necessary for a good life, it is essential to benefit from different perspectives referring to socio-psychological factors or their possible effects as well as financial and economic data. The aim of this study, which deals with the well-being level in terms of sustainability resources, is to evaluate the OECD countries and examine the differences and similarities in Japan, one of the G8 countries. According to the results of the multidimensional scaling analysis conducted for this purpose, Japan is in the same cluster as Luxembourg, which has the highest positive value, while Germany is one of the countries with the highest rate of divergence from other G8 countries in the difference matrix.

This paper presents the post-disaster reconstruction of the Tōhoku region. Although Japan has always been one of the most prepared countries because of its long history with natural disasters, the 2011 Great East Japanese Earthquake and tsunami might be one of the most significant disasters recorded in the country’s modern history. This unprecedented disaster that has shaken Japan is a decisive turning point for the entire society as well as for architects and urban planners. Almost ten years later, reconstruction work is still ongoing. This paper introduces specifically Japanese architects’ involvement during the three phases of recovery: emergency shelter, temporary accommodation and permanent housing. After the first stage of perplexity and doubt, architects gradually stepped up and started initiatives to resolve the disaster victims’ precarious situation. This article outlines some of the architects’ actions through the three phases of recovery since the 3.11 disaster. Each of these temporalities has its issues and challenges which the urban planners, architects and designers tried to solve using their know-how to help rebuild devastated communities.

The nature of the Cenomanian–Turonian Oceanic Anoxic Event (CTOAE) and its δ13 C Excursion is considered in the light of (1) the stratigraphical framework in which the CTOAE developed in the European shelf seas, (2) conclusions that can be drawn from new detailed investigations of the Chalk succession at three locations in England, at Melton Ross and Flixton in the Northern Province where organic-rich ‘black bands’ are present, and at Dover in the Southern Province (part of the Anglo-Paris Basin) where they are absent, and (3) how these conclusion fit in with the present understanding of the CTOAE. The application of the cerium anomaly method (German and Elderfield 1990) at Dover, Melton Ross and Flixton has allowed the varying palaeoredox conditions in the Chalk Sea and its sediments to be related to the acid insoluble residues, organic carbon, δ18O (calcite), δ13C (calcite), δ13C (organic matter), Fe 2+ and Mn2+ (calcite), and P/TiO2 (acid insoluble residue). This has provided evidence that the initial stages of the δ13C Excursion in England were related to (1) a drop of sea level estimated at between 45 and 85 metres, (2) influxes of terrestrial silicate and organic detritus from adjacent continental sources and the reworking of exposed marine sediments, and (3) the presence of three cold water phases (named the Wood, Jefferies and Black) associated with the appearance of the cold-water pulse fauna during the Plenus Cold Event. Conditions in the water column and in the chalk sediment were different in the two areas. In the Northern Province, cerium-enriched waters and anoxic conditions were widespread; the δ13C pattern reflects the interplay between the development of anoxia in the water column and the preservation of terrestrial and marine organic matter in the black bands; here the CTOAE was short-lived (~0.25 Ma) lasting only the length of the Upper Cenomanian Metoicoceras geslinianum Zone. In the Southern Province, water conditions were oxic and the δ13C Excursion lasted to the top of the Lower Turonian Watinoceras devonense Zone, much longer (~1.05 Ma) than in the Northern Province. These differences are discussed with respect to (1) the Cenomanian–Turonian Anoxic Event (CTAE) hypothesis when the ocean-continent-atmosphere systems were linked, (2) limitations of chemostratigraphic global correlation, and (3) the Cenomanian-Turonian Anoxic Event Recovery (CTOAER), a new term to define the varying lengths of time it took different oceans and seas to recover once the linked ocean-continent-atmosphere system was over. The possibility is considered that glacio-eustasy (the glacial control hypothesis of Jeans et al. 1991) with the waxing and waning of polar ice sheets, in association with the degassing of large igneous provinces, may have set the scene for the development of the Cenomanian-Turonian Anoxic Event (CTAE).

This article analyzes topographical and geological settings in the Japan Archipelago for comparative raster data processing using GRASS GIS. Data include bathymetric and geological grids in NetCDF format: GEBCO, EMAG2, GlobSed, marine free-air gravity anomaly and EGM96. Data were imported to GRASS by gdalwarp utility of GDAL and projected via PROJ library. Methodology includes data processing (projecting and import), mapping and spatial analysis. Visualization was done by shell scripting using a sequence of GRASS modules: ‘d.shade’ for relief mapping, ‘r.slope.aspect’; for modelling based on DEM, ‘r.contour’ for plotting isolines, ‘r.mapcalc’ for classification, ‘r.category’ for associating labels, and auxiliary modules (d.vect, d.rast, d.grid, d.legend). The results of the geophysical visualization show that marine free-air gravitational anomalies vary in the Sea of Japan (–30 to above 40 mGal) reflecting density inhomogeneities of the tectonic structure, and correlating with the geological structure of the seafloor. Dominating values of geoid model are 30–45 m reflecting West Pacific rise, determined by deep density inhomogeneities associated with the mantle convention. Sediment thickness varies across the sea reflecting its geological development with density of 2 km in its deepest part and thinner in central part (Yamato Rise). The aspect map and reclassified map express gradient of the steepest descent.
