Lithuanian Folk Textile Heritage: Expressive Possibilities of Designs

Lithuanian folk textile heritage is an important part of world culture heritage, on which various ideas and traditions are imprinted with the emphasis on the education of self-consciousness of society and preservation of national identity. This paper deals with a complex analysis of Lithuanian national fabrics, the data of which have been collected by the authors’ abundant expeditions into Lithuanian rural territories. The current research presents the peculiarities of designs, colours and ornamentation of authentic woven textile manufactured since the middle of the 19th century up to now. The significance of this study is that it investigates only authentic textiles obtained from weavers or their relatives in Lithuanian villages, and the presence of these articles has been undisclosed up to now. This research presents collected, registered and investigated data concerning colours, ornamentation and patternsas expressive possibilities of designs of Lithuanian folk textile: dimai and pick-up fabrics. The current analysis discovers new features of originality of the national fabrics.

Litewskie dziedzictwo folklorystyczne stanowi ważną część światowego dziedzictwa kulturowego, jego idee i tradycje odznaczają się naciskiem na edukację samoświadomości społeczeństwa i zachowanie tożsamości narodowej. W pracy przeprowadzono kompleksową analizę litewskich tkanin narodowych. Zaprezentowane badania przedstawiają osobliwości wzorów, kolorów i ozdób autentycznych tkanin tekstylnych wytwarzanych od połowy XIX wieku do dziś. Badano wyłącznie autentyczne tkaniny uzyskane od tkaczy lub ich krewnych w litewskich wioskach. W artykule przedstawiono zebrane, zarejestrowane i sprawdzone dane dotyczące kolorów, ornamentów i wzorów jako możliwości projektowania tkaniny folklorystycznych dimai i pick-up. Zaprezentowana analiza wskazuje cechy oryginalności litewskich tkanin.

Lithuania has deep traditions in hand-loom weaving. This paper deals with the evaluation and systematisation of North and East Lithuanian hand woven overshot fabrics. This textile heritage has not yet been investigated thoroughly. Investigations of authentic woven fabrics, their patterns, colours as well as weaving technologies are presented with special regard for textile identification, technological analysis and experience of masters. The importance lies in the fact that not only original articles are still extant for Lithuanian rural masters or with their families but the existence of these original works up to now has been undisclosed. In this study textile materials from the last 150 years were investigated. All the data for this research was collected directly from the textile masters during numerous expeditions by the authors in 2013, and in this study we present woven fabrics and weaving traditions as a significant expression of the ethno-cultural identity of an individual and the region.

Na Litwie istnieją długie tradycje tkania na krosnach ręcznych. Materiał ten nie był dotychczas starannie badany. Analizowano tkaniny pod względem stosowanych wzorów, kolorystyki, jak również technologii tkackich. Badano tkaniny wyprodukowane w ostatnich 150-ciu latach. Brano pod uwagę tkaniny zbadane na podstawie ankiet przeprowadzonych w terenie. Zwrócono uwagę na zależność wzorów od technologii tkania oraz na występowanie podobnego wzornictwa w krajach sąsiednich a nawet znacznie oddalonych od Litwy.

Tradycyjne litewskie tekstylia zajmują ważną pozycję w zwyczajach i tradycji kraju. Tkaniny miały często znaczenie nie tylko materialne, ale i symboliczne. Każda tkanina, w zależności od celebrowanego obrzędu, miała swój własny, unikalny wzór. W artykule przedstawiono technologiczną analizę litewskich narodowych tkanin. Dla analizy ornamentów szali z tkanin podwójnie wałkowanych zastosowano międzynarodowy system klasyfikacji i notacje wg. Wooda. Ornamenty tkane z wątkiem górnym analizowano wcześniej zaprogramowaną metodą wielokrotności matryc. Przedstawione metody ułatwiają zarówno zapis ornamentów jak i możliwości dalszych kreacji.

Lithuanian traditional textiles have an important place in the customs and traditions of the country. The fabrics often had not only material significance, hut symbolic meaning as well. Lach fabric had its own unique ornamentation according to the event celebrated. The technological analysis of Lithuanian national fabrics is presented in this article. The International classification system and notation by Woods is used for analysis of ornaments of pick-up sashes. Ornaments of overshot fabrics are analysed by using the principle of matrix multiplication proposed earlier. These methods facilitate the notation of ornaments, and the possibility also increases in the creation of ornaments.
