The paper presents the results of physical and mechanical tests of Carpathian flysch rocks of variable lithology, including sandstones, siltstones, shales and claystones collected from various tectonic units of the Polish Carpathians. The analyses comprised uniaxial compressive strength (Rc), tensile strength (Rt), Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) and Cerchar hardness index (CHI). The obtained results show strong positive correlations between Rc, Rt, CHI and CAI (p = 0.77-0.93), indicating that the type and composition of the cement are the main factors controlling the mechanical behaviour, whereas grain size plays a secondary role. The highest mechanical strength was observed in silica- and silica-carbonate-cemented sandstones and siltstones, and the lowest in clay- and clay-carbonate-cemented rocks. The Carpathian flysch represents a highly heterogeneous, rhythmically bedded rock complex. This variability results in significant differences in rock behaviour, even within a single tunnel section, requiring a detailed geological-engineering investigation supported by an extensive laboratory testing program. The obtained relationships form a basis for predictive modelling of flysch rock behaviour under mechanical excavation andfor calibrating geomechanical classifications (RMR, Q, GSI) for tunnelling conditions in the Carpathians.
This study explores a variety of mountain settlements and stress-strain problems caused by tunnels passing through mountain fault zones. Based on the research background of the Lianfeng Mountain tunnel project, the expansion pressure of the rock mass was introduced through the Kastner formula using ABAQUS finite element simulation software. A mountain structure model was established, and the structural stress state of the mountain after tunnel excavation and the stability law of the secondary lining were studied. The results showed that for the double-layer steel frame, the inner steel frame of the tunnel bore more stress. In the normal section, the settlement of the tunnel vault was similar to the amount of bottom uplift. However, in the broken section, the settlement of the vault was significantly greater than the amount of bottom uplift. The excavation of the second tunnel during the construction of the double tunnel caused the strain in the first tunnel to increase. This study provides a theoretical reference for the safety analysis of similar mountain tunnels.
The majority of existing methodologies for tunnel assessment and classification are rooted in empirical construction practices. Traditionally, these approaches ascertain the magnitude of a tunnel’s scale by relying on a solitary parameter, such as its length or cross-sectional dimensions, often neglecting the critical role of environmental factors. This oversight significantly restricts the methods’ broader utility. Hence, there is a pressing need to innovate a comprehensive tunnel assessment and grading framework that seamlessly incorporates both geological and environmental parameters, thereby broadening its applicative horizons. To achieve a more nuanced understanding of tunnel scales, an encompassing classification paradigm has been conceived. This paradigm takes into account a spectrum of six critical determinants: tunnel length, cross-sectional dimensions, the geological influence coefficient, the structural importance of the tunnel, the gradient of the tunnel’s slope, and the net distance between interconnected tunnels. A sophisticated formula has been devised to calculate the total volume of excavation, with geological considerations primarily hinged on the tunnel’s length and cross-sectional dimensions. Additionally, the formula is calibrated to integrate other pivotal factors, notably environmental impacts. Upon this robust foundation, a novel tunnel assessment and classification protocol has been articulated. This protocol harmoniously blends geological and environmental attributes with pragmatic considerations. A case study, focusing on a quintessential tunnel, has been meticulously conducted, yielding results that substantiate the method’s efficacy and reliability. The research’s deliverables offer a substantive benchmark for tunnel assessments and classifications within contexts characterized by intricate environmental dynamics.

This article explores the potential of ICMP tunneling as a viable medium for encrypted and reliable communication. It outlines the mechanisms employed in the developed ICMP tunneling library, as well as the strategies implemented to ensure reliability, encryption, and covert communication. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of this library against other solutions is conducted, accompanied by an evaluation of the findings from a functional study. Tests proved that the developed li-brary allows stabile ICMP tunneling while maintaining encryption and mechanisms to ensure transmission reliability. Analysis of the results confirmed that the use of an optimised packet size makes it more difficult for network traffic monitoring systems to detect the communication.

Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) tunnel diodes are desirable for applications including ultra-high frequency rectenna detectors, solar cells, and mixers due to their femtosecond-fast transmission. These applications place strict demands on the current-voltage I(V) properties of diodes. In this paper, a single insulator tunnel diode is simulated using SILVACO ATLAS software to correlate the importance of insulator interfacial stability to MIM rectification performance, which helped to analyse and develop MIM diodes with the desired properties. By keeping the Al2O3 insulator layer, different metals were used as electrodes of the MIM diode to achieve the desired asymmetry. Two schemes of electrode asymmetry were proposed, the first scheme is based on using a metal that produces a constant barrier height at one side of the insulator layer and different barrier heights at the other by using different metals. The second structure implicates using different metals at the sides of the insulator to achieve different barrier heights but with constant barrier differences between the metals. A voltage range of 0.4 V was used to study electrical characteristics. It is found that the MIM structure with fixed barrier height at cathode side produces a good asymmetry with poor nonlinearity, while the results of fixed barrier height at anode side reveals that the figure of merit (FOM) strongly depends on the work function difference of the metals of the MIM structure. For the constant barrier differences, it is found that the smaller the barrier height the larger the current response produced and the lower the turn on voltage. The impact of insulator thickness on the diode FOM shows that the lowest thickness produces the highest asymmetry and nonlinearity.

Effects of temperature variation on the performance of silicon heterojunction solar cells are studied using opto-electrical simulations. It is shown that the low-temperature cell efficiency is determined by the fill factor, while at high temperatures it depends on the open-circuit voltage. Simulations revealed that the low-temperature drop in the fill factor is caused by poor tunnelling, in particular at the ITO/p-a-Si:H heterojunction. The authors link this drop in fill factor to a low maximum-power-point voltage and show how poor tunnelling is reflected in the charge redistribution determining the device voltage. The effect of the contact work function on temperature behaviour of efficiency by varying the electron affinity of ITO layers has been demonstrated. It was also demonstrated that increasing the electron affinity of ITO on the p-side minimises the work function mismatch, leading to significant improvements in efficiency, especially at low temperatures, while optimisation on the n-side results in maginal improvements over the entire temperature range. In addition to the cumulative effects of the temperature-dependent parameters, their individual contributions to the efficiency were also investigated. Moreover, it was presented that the thermal energy (kT) determines the efficiency temperature behaviour, while other parameters play only a minor role. This paper shows how temperature variations affect device performance parameters.
A set of parametric studies by using the Abaqus software is conducting to investigate the effective method to seal the CWO sewer from the tunneling process. These methods include: (i) two deep grouted walls, (ii) adjacent slurry piles, (iii) bored reinforced concrete piles assisted with slurry piles, and (iv) grouted block confining the twin tunnel wall. Based on the results of parametric studies. Most of the protective studied technique was effective on reducing the tunneling effect on the ground movements.
One of major design problems associated with shallow tunnelling in urbanized areas is the prediction of ground displacements caused by the construction process. Advanced tunnelling techniques such as shield tunnelling using Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB-TBMs) allow for significant reductions of settlements observed at the ground surface in comparison to tunnelling methods used in the past. The predictions of these displacements are often based on semi-empirical methods and prior experience. In addition to relative simplicity of such methods, their robustness and decades of validation in many tunnelling projects make them attractive for practical use. The tunnelling-induced settlement trough at the ground surface can be described by inversed Gaussian distribution function. It requires only the assumption of two parameters, namely: expected volume loss (VL) and the distance to the point of inflection (iy ), which is dependent on the empirical trough width parameter (K) and the tunnelling depth (z0). The values of those parameters have a strongly empirical nature; they should be established based on comparable experience obtained from full scale tunnelling projects with similar technique and at similar ground conditions. The paper presents the problem of variability of those parameters and discusses the need for its assessment. As volume loss is strongly related to the tunnelling technique, the study focuses on EPB-TBM tunnelling as the most commonly implemented one in recent years. Variability of parameters observed for different ground conditions in different countries is summarized. Finally, preliminary assessment of variability of settlements observed in Warsaw region is presented.

Praca przedstawia uwarunkowania projektowe i realizacyjne tunelu w wysokim nasypie kolejowym, wykonywanym metodą przecisku. Dopuszczono do zmiany parametrów geotechnicznych w podłożu gruntowym. Przeprowadzono próbę oszacowania wymaganej siły przecisku, przyjmując warunki gruntowe według rozpoznania podłoża gruntowego odpowiadającego budowie drogi i pobliskiego wiaduktu drogowego. Brak profesjonalizmu i ignorancja wymagań podanych w EC7 to przyczyny długiego okresu wykonania tunelu metodą przecisku.

The paper presents the design and implementation conditions of a tunnel in a high railway embankment, which was constructed using the jacking method. The implementation of the jacking was not preceded by identification of the railway embankment and the soil subbase in the place of jacking. The geotechnical parameters in the soil subbase became altered. The selected hydraulic set was unable to generate sufficient jacking force due to the decrease in theload-bearing capacity of the resistance zone. There was a lack of proper monitoring of conducted works. An attempt was made to estimate the required jacking force, assuming soil conditions according to the identification of the soil subbase corresponding to the structure of the road and the nearby viaduct. The lack of professionalism and ignorance regarding the requirements presented in EC7 [1,2,3] constitute thereasons for the prolongation of the tunnel construction by jacking method.
Hyperloop is a new concept of transport system the main assumption of which is to use hermetic tunnels where air pressure is very low compared to atmospheric pressure. It enables significant reduction of traffic resistance and, as a result, energy consumption. One of the most important elements of this system is land infrastructure with transport tubes. This system component has a significant impact on the construction costs related to the whole system and affects its functional parameters (e.g. capsule travel speed). Appropriate configuration of the route of a new transport system will require the use of all possible ways of leading transport tubes, including tunneling. The paper presents the key premises that prove a large potential application of tunnel technologies in the development of a new transport system.
