The world is shifting away from petrol and oil-based energy sources, which have been linked to environmental degradation and global warming. To address these environmental issues and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, the transition from conventional gasoline-powered vehicles to natural gas (CNG) vehicles has recently gained traction. This paper presents an overview of the progress made in the use of compressed natural gas as viable and environmentally friendly alternative fuel in Nigeria. The efforts made thus far by the Nigerian government in embracing the use of CNG and the projects executed to ensure a smooth transition from the use of conventional fuels to natural gas fuels are discussed. In addition to the existing CNG stations across the country, twelve new stations were installed in two major cities, and the government officially launched hundreds of CNG intra- and inter-state buses in July 2024. It has also established centres for the conversion of existing petrol and diesel vehicles to CNG vehicles, with the goal of alleviating the hardships faced by Nigerians as a consequence of the removal of petrol subsidies. It is suggested that the hazards associated with CNG storage, such as in vessels, tanks, and cylinders, should be critically assessed because their explosions are almost always unexpected and disastrous. Also, possible activities that could potentially lead to explosions should be identified for proper protection.

The article discusses topics related to hydrogen transformation in the context of energy efficiency and the context of hydrogen logistics. Most people have the impression that technology is conditioned by hydrogen production. This article aims to address a much more important issue in hydrogen technology, namely the efficiency of the process in relation to hydrogen storage and distribution.
HCNG is a fuel, which as a mixture of hydrogen (H₂) and compressed natural gas (CNG), combines the advantages of both gases. The addition of hydrogen shortens the combustion time, increases the flammability range and enables greater exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) while maintaining cyclic stability and low NOx emissions. As a result, HCNG can be used in most classic diesel engines. This fuel has a higher energy volumetric storage density than pure hydrogen, which reduces the need to transport large amounts of fuel. Disadvantages include the lack of appropriate infrastructure, fuel and vehicle standards and the need for additional safeguards. The aim of the study was to check the emission levels of a single-cylinder diesel engine powered by HCNG compared to conventional fuel. It has been shown that the use of HCNG effectively reduces CO emissions due to the lack of carbon in hydrogen and its high combustion rate, which intensifies the process and improves its efficiency. The higher hydrogen content further stabilizes methane combustion and increases the homogeneity of the mixture. HCNG also reduces hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, compensating for the ignition delay and slow speed of the CNG flame. At higher engine loads, these effects are more visible, leading to more efficient combustion. Particulate matter (PM) emissions are reduced due to the homogeneous mixture resulting from the high diffusivity of hydrogen. PM reduction is more visible at lower loads. Higher combustion temperatures in HCNG promote the formation of NOx, which results from the intensification of combustion by hydrogen and excess oxygen, according to the Zeldovich mechanism. By analyzing emissions, the authors showed the great potential of using HCNG in a diesel engine. At the same time, the main challenges that should be faced in order to popularize this solution were indicated.
Purpose: The purpose of this article is to present the most important information and conclusions about gas-powered motor vehicles and the associated risks during fires and local emergencies. An additional area of consideration for the article’s authors is the challenges that emergency services may encounter during rescue and firefighting operations involving such vehicles. Introduction: Technological advances in propulsion systems used in vehicles and machinery pose a variety of challenges for fire protection. It results in the evolution of known threats and the emergence of new ones. Among other things, these developments have a significant impact on the technologies of rescue operations during fires and traffic accidents involving vehicles with different propulsion systems (increasingly using gaseous fuels). Equally important is ensuring fire safety when operating such vehicles. Methodology: On the basis of a review and analysis of the literature on the subject, as well as available research results, conclusions have been formulated regarding the fire safety of gas-powered vehicles. Aspects relevant to conducting rescue and firefighting operations involving such vehicles were taken into account. Conclusions: Necessary measures to improve fire protection, including the conduct of effective rescue and firefighting operations during incidents involving alternatively powered vehicles include: 1. Keeping as accurate a record as possible of fires and local emergencies involving the vehicles in question. 2. Urgently developed and updated educational materials that allow training, both for the rescuers and commanders of KSRG units, in blended learning mode, and systematically conducted such training. An example of this is the educational platform prepared by CNBOP-PIB in 2009 for OSP rescuers (rescue operations) and rural residents (handling emergency situations). The platform is still in place today, and although it needs updating, it has been used successfully for many years for training and professional development of a wide range of the rescuers. 3. A rescue database of vehicles involved in incidents urgently prepared and made available to the rescuers of firefighting units that are part of the KSRG. Such a base should be established immediately or be available on terms convenient to the rescue units (such as CRS or ERG).

This article presents the results of an assessment of the potential for the use of CNG in Poland as a fuel for passenger cars powered by an internal combustion engine fuelled by petrol or diesel. The basis for assessing the potential was an analysis of the economic efficiency of converting a passenger car fuelled by petrol or diesel to a dual-fuel vehicle by installing a CNG system. On the basis of available literature data, the vehicle structure was characterised using the following criteria: vehicle age, engine capacity, car-segment, type of fuel used and unladen vehicle mass. The average fuel consumption (petrol or diesel) of the vehicle before conversion was determined on the basis of specially developed statistical models. The conversion and operating costs of a vehicle fuelled with conventional fuel and with CNG (after vehicle conversion) were estimated on the basis of a stochastic simulation model using probability density distributions of vehicle parameters and the Monte Carlo method. The vehicle parameters were estimated so that the obtained set of vehicles reflected the actual structure of passenger cars in Poland. The estimated costs of vehicle conversion (purchase and installation of a CNG system) and its subsequent operating costs made it possible to assess the economic efficiency of the car conversion process. The potential use of CNG as a fuel for combustion cars was estimated by comparing the operating costs of a vehicle before conversion and the operating costs of a vehicle after conversion, taking into account the costs of conversion. Analogous calculations were carried out for the conversion of a vehicle to run on LPG, i.e. the most important competitor to CNG. At the current CNG fuel price of over 9.50 PLN/m3, the installation of a CNG system in passenger cars in Poland is not economically viable. Taking into account current fuel prices, the installation of a CNG system will start to be economically efficient for a small number of vehicles when the CNG price is 4 PLN/m3 lower than the current price. Conversion most often has a positive economic effect when it takes place in cars with a petrol-fuelled engine characterised by high fuel consumption and an average annual mileage of more than 20,000 kilometres.

W artykule podjęto badania zmian zawartości wodoru w mieszankach z metanem z wykorzystaniem technologii membranowej. Omówiono właściwości membran do separacji gazów i opracowano projekt instalacji. Gaz wpływał do modułu do przestrzeni międzykapilarnej w układzie przeciwprądowym. Przeprowadzono serie testów separacji wodoru i metanu w funkcji ciśnień i wydajności uzyskiwanych produktów.

It can be assumed that in the coming years there will be sections of gas pipelines where blends of natural gas and hydrogen (HCNG) will be transported. This gas can be partially used locally as a fuel for internal combustion engines, e.g. motor vehicles. The use of alternative drives, including those powered by hydrogen and its blends with natural gas, is a visible trend, especially in public transport vehicles. The already used CNG fuel (compressed natural gas) in vehicles in Poland was described and the description of the new HCNG gas fuel (compressed hydrogen and natural gas mixtures – hytane) was analyzed. The fuel (HCNG) completely eliminates soot and particulate matter from combustion products and lowers CO2, CO and NOx emissions. In this article, studies of changes in the content with the use of membrane technology were made. Gas separation membranes are discussed and a plant design has been developed. A test stand for the membrane separation of a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas was established. The research was carried out on the dependence of the flow of a mixture of 15% hydrogen in methane through a module with capillary polyimide membranes. The gas flowed into the module into the intercapillary space in a countercurrent system. A series of tests on the separation of hydrogen and methane as a function of pressure and efficiency of the obtained products was carried out. The permeate and retentate compositions were determined for an inlet pressure of 60 bar and a permeate pressure of 4 bar and 1 bar. A very clear separation of gaseous components (H2 and CH4) in individual products was obtained. The hydrogen content of 15% in the feed gas increases several fold in the permeate stream and decreases in the high pressure retentate stream. The results of this work can be used to develop guidelines for the design of a universal HCNG refuelling point (station) (or other applications) with any required H2 content in methane in the range from 2 to 70% hydrogen.
The uncertainty in the supply of crude oil, increasing the number of vehicles and rising air pollution, especially in urban areas, has prompted us to look for alternative fuels. It is understood that using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in IC engines could be a mid-term solution to these problems. It is well established that CNG has better combustion characteristics and low emissions compared to conventional gasoline and diesel fuel. In the present study, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the engine performance and exhaust emissions using various percentages of CNG in dual fuel mode. CNG was mixed in the intake manifold’s air stream, and diesel was injected after the compression of the CNG air mixture. This paper presents experimental results of 40%,60%, and 80% CNG in the air stream. Engine performance and emissions are presented and discussed at a speed of 1200 rpm to 1500 rpm in steps of 50 rpm. The results of the experiments showed that adding CNG to diesel engines in dual-fuel combustion significantly impacted performance and emissions. Compared to single diesel fuel combustion, dual fuel combustion increases brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) at all CNG energy shares and engine speeds. Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were increased, while nitrogen oxide (NOx) and smoke opacity were decreased in dual fuel combustion compared to single diesel fuel.
Natural gas is one of the potential combustion engine fuels whose proportion in the overall energy balance is expected to increase. Owing to some of its properties, its use requires a dual-fuel supply system; thus, the use of natural gas as a fuel for diesel engines is currently limited. Systems that supply gas fuel to diesel engines do not usually interfere with the engine control system. This solution significantly reduces system-installation costs. However, as demonstrated in the present study, it considerably changes the course of the combustion process, which increases thermal and mechanical loads. In this case, the combustion process can be controlled by changing the liquid fuel injection pressure or advancing the injection angle. This, however, requires interference with the engine control system.
Aim: The aim of the article is to review information about motor vehicles that use alternative propulsion systems (in this case, electric propulsion) and the risks associated with their use. The discussion of these issues is crucial for undertaking rescue and firefighting operations during incidents (fires, local emergencies) involving alternatively powered vehicles and the effectiveness of these operations. Knowledge in the areas of: hazard identification, improvement of rescue technologies, necessary devices and equipment for effective rescue and firefighting operations during traffic incidents, including fires, with the involvement of vehicles with alternative propulsion systems can be gained from both theoretical and empirical studies. Introduction: Technical and technological advances in the area of drives used in vehicles and machinery pose new challenges for fire protection. They concern, among other things, the technology of rescue operations during fires and traffic accidents involving such vehicles, as well as ensuring fire safety when operating and storing them in buildings, garages and parking areas, and during charging. Methodology: The article was prepared based on national and foreign sources, literature on the subject, research results and the authors’ diverse experiences. It describes the current state of knowledge in terms of hazards and how to deal with them during rescue and firefighting operations against incidents involving alternatively powered vehicles. Conclusions: The number of motor vehicles in Poland and other countries continues to grow, and together with it also the number of vehicles equipped with alternative drives to internal combustion engines (gasoline, diesel). An analysis of the literature on the subject, available research results, as well as individual incidents, lead to the reasonable conclusion that the risks during rescue and firefighting operations associated with the incidents involving electric and hybrid vehicles are no greater than for conventionally powered vehicles. They are different to some extent, which is due in particular to the used power system, which is based on energy storage devices – batteries.

Wprowadzenie: Postęp techniczny i zaawansowane technologie w zakresie napędów stosowanych w pojazdach i maszynach stawiają przed ochroną przeciwpożarową nowe wyzwania. Artykuł opisuje obecny stan wiedzy w zakresie zagrożeń i radzenia sobie z nimi podczas prowadzenia działań ratowniczo-gaśniczych wobec zdarzeń z udziałem pojazdów z napędami alternatywnymi.
Currently, the world is facing problems regarding environmental pollution due to the combustion of fossil fuels. Generally, the combustion of fossil fuels takes place in the Internal Combustion engine for power or electricity generation. The combustion of fossil fuels emits greenhouse gases that lead to the greenhouse effect. The main symptom of the greenhouse effect is increased earth surface temperature. Also, the resources of fossil fuels are depleting rapidly and can take thousands of years to reproduce, so the time has come to go for lesser polluting renewable fuels. In this research, Bio-CNG is considered as an alternative fuel to conventional fuel, i.e. Diesel. The performance test on four-stroke IC Engines working on Bio-CNG and Diesel fuel is conducted simultaneously. The performance parameters such as Brake Power, Indicated Power, Thermal Efficiencies, Mechanical, Volumetric efficiency for both fuels are compared. Along with the performance, the emission is also recorded and compared. The results have shown that Bio-CNG has slightly less performance ability for similar engines working on Diesel fuel. Yet, this study also shows that Bio-CNG possesses the ability to replace the conventional fuel with some engine and exhaust system modifications. The higher calorific value (47000 kJ/kg) and lower or negligible carbon emission make it the best sustainable fuel substitute to conventional fuel, i.e. Diesel.
All three Baltic States have reached good figures regarding the change in total greenhouse gas emissions from transport during 1990-2017. Particularly successful is Lithuania, showing a negative value of -2.7%. Latvia considerably lags behind Estonia (+15.1% vs. +1.5%). Amid the achievement of Latvian scientists, engineers and merchants, the authors point out the work of Lithuanian engineers who investigated how gaseous hydrogen affects the parameters of diesel internal combustion engine. Important to note that in the Baltic States, the activities of inland waterway vessels and the shunting locomotives are concentrated in only a few main cities. Regarding that, Baltic scientists and environment specialists nowadays are developing plans also for local air pollution decreasing, which can be carried out in particular cities or industrial areas, thereby allowing for improvements in air cleanliness and the ecological situation in concerned local area. A numerical estimation shows that applying the NYSMART technology, introduced in this paper, will make areas of active action of the high-volume diesels cleaner in the same amount as gained by photosynthesis of the urban green flora. In recent years, the developed technology of hydraulic piston compression allows producing numerous different vehicle fueling appliances for the CNG/bio-CNG fuel. The further development of this technology means the producing of various solutions, applicable at biogas/biomethane production sites, for CNG/bio-CNG compression, transportation and fast natural gas vehicles refueling in a cost effective and convenient way. The hydraulic piston compression and NYSMART have a potential in small and medium-scale technologies and therefore need to be developed further for applications with hydrogen. Production of biomethane and green hydrogen is delayed by the lack of state aid programmes in the Baltic States. Lithuania is on the way to change the situation in the coming years, with one of the first biomethane gas production plants due to be built near Panevėžys, in Šilagalys near the Via Baltica motorway. Summing up all aspects, the preconditions for the use of alternative fuels in the Baltic States are similar, allowing one to learn from other’s experience and to consider joint projects.

In Poland, biomethane is not yet used as fuel for vehicles. There are also no installations purifying biogas to the quality of natural gas and injecting it into the gas network, unlike many European countries such as e.g. Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. The article highlights the fact that the use of bioCNG is possible in the same vehicles that run on CNG, and that storage and distribution of bioCNG and CNG can take place via the same refueling system. This article analyzes the quality parameters of biomethane injected into the gas network and the quality parameters of CNG and bioCNG. The result of this analysis is the identification of differences in the quality of biomethane used as a final product for various applications, and the determination of homogeneous quality parameters for biomethane injected into the gas network, which can also be used as fuel for bioCNG vehicles.
The safe use of gas fuel installations in vehicles is guaranteed by legal and technical aspects. These topics are included in this study. The regulations ensuring safety in the operation of the mentioned fuel systems serve as a solution for potentially hazardous situations. The components of propane-butane and CNG fueling systems are designed, manufactured and tested to maximize their safety of use. The regulations [6-8] define the guidelines for the arrangement and assembly method of the system components, and additionally, the assembly service itself may be performed only by an authorized workshop with granted permissions. Installations using gaseous fuels are safer than conventional fuels in the event of a collision or fire, as long as the user of the installation does not gross negligence in operation and maintenance. The article also discusses the context of the restriction in access to the car infrastructure for cars powered by gaseous fuels.

This paper investigated the impact of the exhaust gas recirculation on the concentration of selected harmful chemical compounds from the AVL 5402 research diesel engine powered with diesel fuel (DF) and compressed natural gas (CNG). The engine was operated in the dual fuel mode. It means that the engine was conventionally fuelled by regular diesel fuel and simultaneously by CNG dosed into the inlet pipe. The necessary tests were carried out for the mixtures containing 30, 50 and 70% of CNG (by energy content) in the total chemical energy delivered together with diesel fuel (DF) into the combustion chamber. The research was conducted for the stationary conditions of the engine operation at 1200 rpm and constant 1004 Joules of a fuel chemical energy delivered in each cycle into the combustion chamber. Under such conditions, the impact of the EGR rate changed in range of 0–50% on the emissions of selected unburned hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) as well as particulate matter (PM), was evaluated. The obtained results confirmed that the EGR system is effective in the reduction of the NOx formation for all tested fuel mixtures. Nevertheless, it was found that the addition of CNG combusted in the diesel engine generates more harmful pollutants in comparison with diesel fuel. However, in some cases the concentration of NOx as well as PM was comparable or lower. It suggests that the combustion of CNG in diesels allows achieving environmental benefits. In this case, further optimization of the engine fuel supply system is necessary.
In the nearest future, natural gas may become an important source of energy for internal combustion engines driving road transport vehicles. Reciprocating internal combustion engines are faced with increasingly stringent requirements as regards their environmental impact. It will be more and more difficult to satisfy these requirements for engines powered with conventional fuels. Driving units alternative to reciprocating internal combustion engines still do not meet their users’ expectations, especially in long-distance and heavy transport. Moreover, it turns out that electric drive in cars is not necessarily more ecological than modern internal combustion engines, in particular when we derive electric energy from coal. As a result of this, it is well-grounded to use natural gas to power internal combustion engines. Both ecological and economic reasons support this. The article presents selected results of tests on the dual-fuel PERKINS 1104D-E44TA engine powered with compressed natural gas and diesel oil. It has been proven that in the case of the dual-fuel CI engine, both hourly energy consumption and brake specific energy consumption are higher than for diesel oil consumption only. At the same time, it has been proven that the use of the energy delivered to the cylinders of the engine powered with natural gas and diesel oil is less efficient. The discussed type of dual-fuel combustion in the tested engine is less efficient than the combustion of conventional fuel the engine has been prepared for at the factory.

Jednocześnie wykazano mniejszą efektywność wykorzystania energii doprowadzanej do cylindrów silnika z gazem ziemnym i olejem napędowym. Przyjęty sposób dwupaliwowego zasilania badanego silnika jest mniej efektywny niż jego zasilanie paliwem konwencjonalnym, do którego fabrycznie został przystosowany.
Current and further developing CO2 and emission regulations worldwide and the competition to full electric mobility deliver a challenge for internal combustion engines in general. A state of the art solution is the use of natural gas mainly contending methane to reduce CO2 significantly and to offer lowest emission levels. The EU-funded project GasOn developed engine concepts to fully exploit the advantages of CNG. This article describes the development of an innovative, monovalent engine dedicated to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and characterised by the lean burn concept and the innovative pre-chamber combustion.
The increase in ignitability consist a main aim of implementation of the turbulent jet ignition (TJI) in relation to the combustion of diluted charges. Such an ignition system has been introduced to the lean-burn CNG engine in the scope of GasOn-Project (Gas Only Internal Combustion Engines). In this study the impact of TJI application on the main combustion indexes has been investigated using RCM and analyzed on the bases of the indicating and optical observations data. The images have been recorded using LaVision HSS5 camera and post-processed with Davis software. Second part of the study based on indicating measurements consist the analysis of combustion regarding the variation in the geometry of pre-chamber nozzles. It has been noted, that combustion with TJI indicates significantly bigger flame luminescence and simultaneously - faster flame front development, than the combustion initiated with conventional SI. The positive impact of nozzles angular position on engine operational data has been found in the static charge movement conditions, regarding the combustion stability.

Natural gas is a medium transported by pipeline to long distances. One can distinguish several pressure levels, seperated by pressure letdown stations (PLS). At a PLS, exergy of the high pressure gas is destroyed so the gas is no longer able to perform mechanical work. The aim of this work is a thermodynamic and economic optimization of an integrated PLS-expander-compressor system for the production of compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles.
