The objective of this study is to predict the longitudinal and transverse electrical conductivities of unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polymers through the coupling of an algebraic matrix with experimental parameters. Initially, regular hexagonal topology structures are generated for various filling rates. These structures, in conjunction with the experimental parameters of CFRP, are utilized to create a comprehensive algebraic matrix. Subsequently, two specific sub-matrices, derived from this global matrix, are employed to predict electrical conductivities. At a filling rate of 59%, the obtained longitudinal conductivity reaches a value of 37 kS/m, while the transverse conductivity is recorded as 14 S/m. These findings confirm the strong predictive computational efficiency of the algebraic matrix approach, highlighting its potential for applications in smart structures and structural health monitoring.

Odkrycia te potwierdzają wysoką wydajność predykcyjną podejścia macierzowego, podkreśla- jąc jego potencjał w zastosowaniach w inteligentnych konstrukcjach i monitorowaniu stanu konstrukcji.

The aim of this article is to review the current state of knowledge related to testing the mechanical properties of components manufactured using selected additive manufacturing (AM) methods. The most commonly used MEX (Material Extrusion) methods, such as FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication), are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the methods and materials used on the mechanical strength, including tensile and torsional strength, and impact strength of the components, including machine parts. The importance of process parameters, print orientation, layer width, and post-processing conditions for the mechanical properties obtained is also analyzed. The anisotropy of the properties of components manufactured using AM methods, resulting from the layered nature of the components, poses a challenge. This review allows us to define the main directions of research development related to the properties of components manufactured using additive manufacturing methods and identifies areas requiring further research (e.g., standardization of test methods and repeatability of the printing process)

Direct Metal Laser Sintering has emerged as a key additive manufacturing technique for producing titanium-based biomedical implants with complex geometries and tailored porous architectures. Despite these advantages, as-built DMLS titanium surfaces exhibit limited bioactivity and insufficient antibacterial properties, which may compromise long-term clinical performance. This review provides a comprehensive and multiscale analysis of surface engineering strategies aimed at enhancing the biological performance of DMLS titanium implants. Mechanical treatments, chemical modifications, bioactive coatings, and antibacterial functionalization approaches are critically evaluated with respect to their mechanisms and biological outcomes. Particular emphasis is placed on the interplay between surface topography, chemistry, and wettability in regulating protein adsorption, cell behavior, and bacterial adhesion. The analysis highlights a fundamental trade-off between promoting osseointegration and preventing bacterial colonization, which remains a central challenge in implant design. Comparative assessment of existing methods indicates that no single modification strategy fully satisfies clinical requirements. Instead, multifunctional and hybrid surface approaches that integrate bioactive and antibacterial features demonstrate the greatest potential. Key challenges, including process variability, coating stability, scalability, and limited clinical validation, are also discussed. Future directions focus on the development of bioinstructive and stimuli-responsive surfaces, as well as the integration of data-driven optimization methods. Overall, advancing DMLS implant performance requires coordinated multiscale surface engineering combined with clinically relevant validation strategies.

The additive manufacturing process unique characteristics lead to the formation of structures with varying mechanical properties in different directions. However, current topology optimization methods often assume material isotropy, overlooking the anisotropy additive manufacturing materials. Hence, we propose a topology optimization method that accounts for additive manufacturing material anisotropy. We establish a local coordinate system to describe material anisotropy and integrate it into the SIMP variable density method, deriving the corresponding interpolation formula. The Kuhn-Tucker condition optimization criterion is applied to solve the problem, and an optimization program is developed. The method’s feasibility and effectiveness are validated through numerical examples, and we extensively discuss the impact of material anisotropy and printing direction on topology optimization results. Research demonstrates that our proposed method is adept at solving both isotropic and anisotropic topology optimization problems. Moreover, the material degree of anisotropy and printing direction significantly influence topology optimization outcomes. Accounting for material anisotropy, the maximum principal stress difference in optimization results obtained under different printing directions can reach 52.26%.

Additive manufacturing is widely used for prototyping and producing functional parts. With the growing capabilities of industrial robots, robotic additive manufacturing is becoming an attractive alternative to conventional 3D printing. Robots enable the fabrication of large-scale, structurally complex, and non-planar components that exceed the limitations of traditional printing. However, the flexibility of robotic systems comes with increased complexity in process control – particularly in the selection of appropriate printing parameters, which is critical for ensuring the quality and stability of the printed parts. This paper addresses the need for a systematic approach to parameter selection in robotic 3D printing to ensure optimal process performance and part quality. First, control software to manage and execute the printing process was developed. Secondly, the impact of changes in the industrial robot TCP's velocity and orientation on the quality of manufactured parts was investigated. Furthermore, to optimize the selection of process parameters, the TOPSIS multi-criteria decision-making method was employed. The presented approach provides a methodology for parameter selection and optimization in robotic 3D printing.

The article presents the application of 3D printing technology in the production of optical lenses, which are used in fields such as mechanical engineering, computer science, and precision optics. The aim of the study was to design, manufacture, and verify the properties of transparent optical lenses made from photopolymer resins. The lenses were fabricated using stereolithography (SLA), a high-precision 3D printing method. The production process is described in detail, including the use of proprietary finishing tools that ensure precise lens processing crucial for achieving optimal optical properties. After printing, the lenses underwent finishing treatments including grinding, polishing, and UV curing, which significantly improved their optical quality. The best lenses demonstrated stable and high light transmission over a wavelength range from 380 to 1146 nm, with transmission values exceeding 90–92%. The optical properties of the lenses were assessed in a professional laboratory using a monochromator, allowing precise measurement and objective quality evaluation. A novel aspect of the study was the use of artificial intelligence in quality control. The Isolation Forest model was employed to detect anomalies in the optical transmission data, identifying 79 anomalies under incandescent light and 81 under xenon light, approximately 5% of the dataset. To better interpret the detected anomalies, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were used to understand which features most influenced anomaly classification. Combining advanced 3D printing technology with AI-driven anomaly detection represents an innovative and promising approach to optical lens manufacturing. This integration enhances defect detection, enabling more effective quality assessment and optimization of the production process. This method offers significant potential for rapid prototyping in precision optics applications.

Additive manufacturing (AM) of metals is increasingly used in engineering applications; however, the anisotropy of mechanical properties caused by the layer-by-layer deposition process poses challenges for constitutive modelling. This study focuses on 316L stainless steel produced by Wire Laser Metal Deposition (WLMD) and aims to develop a Johnson–Cook (J–C) constitutive model suitable for numerical simulations of this material. Tensile tests were performed on specimens printed in four build orientations (0°, 45°, 90°, and cross-directional XX), and the engineering stress–strain curves were converted into true stress–strain data. Young’s modulus, yield strength (Re₀.₂), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and strain at UTS were determined for each orientation. The results demonstrated pronounced anisotropy: UTS ranged from ~610 MPa (90°) to ~660 MPa (0°), while total elongation varied between 28% and 37%, depending on the build direction. Based on the true stress–strain data, simplified J–C parameters (A, B, n) were identified for each orientation, achieving a high quality of fit (R² > 0.97). The findings confirm that build orientation significantly influences the mechanical response of WLMD-processed 316L, and that direction-dependent J–C parameters are necessary for reliable finite element (FE) simulations. The proposed model provides a foundation for more advanced constitutive descriptions, including strain-rate and temperature effects.

The aim of this study is to demonstrate that popular measurement techniques – visual inspection, mechanical tools (digital calliper and steel linear ruler) and modern photogrammetry – can be used to detect shrinkage in 3D prints produced using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology. The choice of the appropriate technique can be made objectively. Measurement techniques and their interrelationships have been the subject of much discussion and numerous scientific articles. They can be described using various criteria, which are often competitive and mutually exclusive. To avoid bias when selecting the measurement method, a multi-criteria decision-making tool – the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used. The results obtained in this study provide a quantitative decision-making framework for researchers selecting measurement methods in FDM quality control. The AHP analysis showed that decision-makers with the profile of a university researcher and lecturer tend to disregard visual inspection techniques and choose mechanical tools or photogrammetry, despite differences in the assessment of the importance of individual criteria characterising a given method. The key criteria for this profile of decision-makers were: measurement system precision (C2) and the overall ability of the technique to detect shrinkage (C8). The least important criteria were: the time-consumption of the measurement and the potential for automation of the measurement technique (C9). The analysis of weight aggregation (using a linear rule) and sensitivity analysis showed that decision-makers with the profile of a research and teaching staff can rely on the results presented in this study.

Predicting defect-driven strain localization in additively manufactured materials remains challenging because experimental datasets are often limited, expensive to generate, and characterized by complex defect topologies. Conventional machine learning models can provide accurate predictions but often lack physical interpretability and uncertainty quantification. To address these limitations, this study proposes a physics-guided and explainable surrogate learning framework for topology-aware damage evolution and localized strain prediction. The framework integrates physics-guided defect descriptors, surrogate-assisted data augmentation, Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), and SHapley Additive exPlanations-based explainable artificial intelligence (AI) to enable accurate, interpretable, and uncertainty-aware predictions under small-data conditions. Physically meaningful descriptors, including topology damage, defect concentration, inter-defect distance, heterogeneity, and damage entropy, were formulated to capture nonlinear defect interactions governing localized deformation. The proposed GPR model achieved an R² of 0.895, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.017 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.020, outperforming the benchmark XGBoost model (R² = 0.794, MAE = 0.031, RMSE = 0.041). Explainability analysis identified heterogeneity and topology damage as the dominant factors influencing strain localization. The proposed framework provides a computationally efficient, physically interpretable, and uncertainty-aware approach for defect-sensitive strain prediction, supporting reliable small-data modelling and future digital twin applications in additive manufacturing.

Prognozowanie lokalizacji odkształceń wywołanych defektami w materiałach wytwarzanych przyrostowo pozostaje trudne, ponieważ zbiory danych eksperymentalnych są często ograniczone, kosztowne w generowaniu i charakteryzują się złożonymi topologiami defektów. Konwencjonalne modele uczenia maszynowego mogą dostarczać dokładnych prognoz, ale często brakuje im fizycznej interpretowalności i oceny niepewności. Aby rozwiązać te ograniczenia, w niniejszym artykule zaproponowano sterowany fizyką zastępczy model uczenia się ewolucji uszkodzeń z uwzględnieniem topologii i przewidywania odkształceń. Model ten integruje deskryptory defektów sterowane fizyką, rozszerzenie danych z wykorzystaniem modelu zastępczego, regresję procesów gaussowskich oraz wyjaśnialną sztuczną inteligencję opartą na modelu Shapley’a tak, aby umożliwić dokładne, interpretowalne i uwzględniające niepewność prognozy w warunkach małej ilości danych. Deskryptory sterowane fizyką, obejmujące uszkodzenia topologiczne, koncentrację defektów, odległość między defektami, heterogeniczność i entropię uszkodzeń, zostały sformułowane w celu uchwycenia nieliniowych interakcji defektów wywołanych zlokalizowanym odkształceniem. Proponowany model regresji procesu gaussowskiego osiągnął R² na poziomie 0,895, średni błąd bezwzględny (MAE) 0,017 i pierwiastek błędu średniokwadratowego (RMSE) 0,020, przewyższając wzorcowy model XGBoost (R² = 0,794, MAE = 0,031, RMSE = 0,041). Analiza wyjaśnialności zidentyfikowała heterogeniczność i uszkodzenia topologiczne jako dominujące czynniki wpływające na lokalizację odkształceń. Proponowana metodyka zapewnia wydajne obliczeniowo, fizycznie interpretowalne i uwzględniające niepewność podejście do przewidywania odkształceń z uwzględnieniem defektów, wspierając niezawodne modelowanie oparte na małych zbiorach danych i przyszłe zastosowania cyfrowych bliźniaków w produkcji przyrostowej.

Additive manufacturing technology, a relatively new and dynamically evolving field, is increasingly used in a variety of manufacturing applications. On ships operated for a long period of time, where some parts are no longer manufactured, additive technology offers a forward-looking solution for the rapid and efficient reproduction of necessary components. This paper proposes a standardized operational workflow for managing requests and orders for 3D-printed components in the maritime industry, designed to address the unique challenges faced by vessels operating in remote locations. A case study involving the reconstruction of a fastening component within the control cabinet of a ship’s safety and RPM switch unit system demonstrates the practicality of this approach. The part is successfully reproduced using a standardized workflow, which began with the collection of photographs and measurements from the ship’s crew. This data enabled the creation of a precise 3D model and the subsequent production of 180 components made from PET-G material, selected for its durability and suitability for the intended application. The standardized workflow developed in this study minimized errors, reduced processing times, and ensured that the reproduced part met operational requirements. By establishing a scalable and adaptable framework for communication between the ship’s crew, engineers, and manufacturing facilities, the workflow highlights the transformative capability of additive technologies as a practical solution for the immediate needs of modern shipping operations.

Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) processes allow for the creation of advanced 3D parts that are difficult to achieve through conventional manufacturing. Defects such as part deformation are a critical issue in L-PBF and seriously affect the industrial adoption of metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes for critical applications. The research community has widely accepted the deformation measurement of known geometries, such as cantilevers or bridges, for the assessment of residual stresses. In this study, quantitative measurements are obtained using a 3D optical scanner on cantilevers with different geometries, in order to study the effect of bar thickness on deformation. Furthermore, this experimental study aims to investigate cantilever deflection measurement methods and compare the obtained deviation parameters. The findings reveal that, in case of cantilever specimens, flatness and curvature attributes measured on surface are more reliable than maximum vertical deflection. The part height plays a primordial role on the deflection, the distortion changes in inverse proportion to the cantilever’s bar thickness.

Rehabilitation of the cranium's bones is considered a complicated procedure that presents a challenge to the surgical staff. Typically, the primary focus when designing an implant should involve selecting optimal design techniques and materials. Material and design should provide a strong, comfortable, simple-to-fit, and attractive implant. Therefore, this study aims to design a suitable customized PEEK implant. Initially, 3D models of the damaged region were created using interactive CAD modelling techniques. While creating the implant model used mirror-based reconstruction. Furthermore, finite element analysis was implemented to evaluate the implant's stability and structural strength. Then morphological analysis was used to assess the precision of virtual fitting. Finally, fused filament fabrication was used to manufacture it. Under simulation, the implant was subjected to a constant load of 50 Newtons and intracranial pressures. According to the simulation results, the maximum Von Mises stress was about 22.057E-2 MPa, the Von Mises strain was 5.8135E-5, and the deformation was 1.9103 µm. That means the maximum recorded stress is quite low in comparison with the material's yield strength. This reflects the ability to endure and maintain safety of the studied implant. While the morphological test showed that the exterior profile curvature contours were uniformly reconstructed, maintaining contiguity between the implant and the skull model, which indicates a suitable fit.

Due to its rapid development, Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a technology that could potentially replace conventional production methods. One of the most common AM techniques is Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), which allows building layer-by-layer prototypes created in computer-aided design (CAD). Due to the layered structure of the manufactured components, it is important to assess the impact of print orientation on the properties of the finished product. Although most of the mechanical properties under quasi-static and fatigue conditions have already been described, the dynamic tests have not yet been thoroughly presented. For instance, it was identified that the raster angle significantly influences the strength properties of the tested specimens, as well as their fatigue resistance. Hence, it can be assumed that it also affects the impact response of additively manufactured specimens. This paper focuses on the mechanical response of ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) samples printed in different orientations and raster angles, tested under impact conditions using the Charpy method according to ISO 179-2, with two impact directions (flatwise and edgewise). The tests were performed on unnotched samples manufactured in vertical and horizontal orientations with raster angles of 0°/-90°, 15°/-75°, 30°/-60°, and 45°/-45°. It has been observed that both printing parameters significantly affect the mechanical behaviour of the tested samples, with a difference in impact toughness of up to 50%.
