Content available Women and risk: a literature review on bank boards
EN
Purpose: Board gender diversity has attracted growing research interest, especially regarding women’s roles on statutory bodies in financial and non-financial companies, with a focus on banks. Exploring the link between gender diversity and banks’ risk-taking is vital due to the threat of credit risk. This article aims to review the literature on female directors and bank risk, summarising studies on women’s participation and its link to bank risk, including psychological and regulatory aspects of risk aversion. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the objective of this paper, relevant literature has been analysed, and verbal description methods have been applied. The review primarily encompasses empirical studies from high-quality journals, introduced by an overview of the theoretical framework, with particular emphasis on the psychological and regulatory aspects. Findings: The literature review highlights the psychological underpinnings of gender differences in risk aversion. It also outlines the regulatory frameworks influencing women’s participation on statutory bodies. Empirical research findings on board gender diversity and bank risk-taking remain inconclusive, leaving the relationship between the gender composition of statutory body members and banks’ risk-taking unclear. Originality/value: This paper provides a comprehensive overview of gender differences in risk preferences and, consequently, board gender diversity in banks. It organises key findings regarding the relationship between women’s participation and banks’ propensity to take risk. Therefore, it serves as a valuable reference for bank executives, particularly credit risk committees, as well as policymakers and regulators involved in risk management processes.

Gender diversity in corporate leadership is an increasingly discussed topic in the field of corporate governance and economic performance. The European Union has adopted several measures aimed at increasing the representation of women in leadership positions, including Directive (EU) 2022/2381, which sets targets for a more balanced gender representation on the boards of listed companies. This study focuses on examining the development of gender diversity in corporate leadership in the Visegrad Group (V4) countries and its impact on companies' financial performance. The objective is to verify whether listed companies in these countries are aligning with the regulatory requirements and to assess the effect of higher female representation on financial results. The research employs a quantitative approach based on data analysis from the Eurostat and Orbis databases. In the first part of the study, the development of the share of women in leadership positions in V4 companies over time is tracked and their progress toward the 33% threshold set by European legislation is examined. Subsequently, the relationship between gender diversity in leadership and financial indicators is analyzed using statistical tests and regression analysis.

This study aims to investigate both relationship and influence of gender diversity in the company's board of directors and financial ratios on company’s performance. In Indonesia, the number of females as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) leading public companies is quite numerous. It allows researcher to compare the performance of companies with different gender diversity statistically. The study investigated 364 companies from 9 sectors listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in the period of 2014-2017. Balanced panel data regression was used to analyse whether gender diversity on the board of directors and financial ratios affected the company’s performance. The results of the estimation showed that Price to Book Value, Debt Equity Ratio, Current Ratio and Total Asset Turnover influenced the company’s performance. Although the influence of gender diversity was not significant, the results of the difference test proved that there are differences on company’s performance, led by either female CEOs or male CEOs. These positive results will support the development of gender diversity in Indonesia’s business world.

Pozwala to statystycznie porównać wyniki firm w relacji do różnorodności płciowej zarządzających.

Łączna wielkość próby to 631 pracowników.

In today’s globalized business environment organizational success depends on all employers in the organization no matter of the diversities (nationality, age, gender or race). Human resources are unique, non imitative and the most important source of competitiveness for each economy and organizations are aware of this fact. Women are representing a high percentage in the total labour force in the EU but they are still not proportionally represented in the leading positions in a workplace. For centuries women at the workplace were given the low responsibility jobs because of the balance between private and professional life. Today the situation is changed and organizations have to change, they have to learn how to conduct equality in gender diversity. Diversity is very important especially because of the flexibility of contemporary organizations. All these changes make complexity in management especially regarding the interpersonal communication, compensation management, working time etc. The aim of the paper is to analyse and determine the gender diversity at leading positions in corporations in EU countries as one of the emerging and important issues in corporate governance on the global level.
