This article explores issues related to the pre-sowing stimulation of plant organisms using a magnetic field. A literature review revealed that similar studies typically have focused on only one type of stimulation or one variety. In the present study, a multifactorial experiment was analyzed. The present study analyzes a multifactorial experimental design, taking into account several levels of magnetic field induction as well as three varieties of root parsley (Petroselinum crispum). The influence of magnetic stimulation on selected germination parameters — germination energy and germination capacity — was investigated. Due to the specificity and volume of the samples, custom experimental stands were developed to enable accurate and consistent testing.
Purpose: The aim of this article is to present the results of research concerning the implementation process of the concept of social responsibility at Polish universities that, between 2017 and 2022, formally joined the group of signatories of the “Declaration of Social Responsibility of Universities” (USR Declaration, 2022). Design/methodology/approach: The empirical findings are presented against the background of a literature review. This article is part of a broader research project entitled “Social Responsibility in the University Value Chain” (2024-2026), funded by the Angelus Silesius University of Applied Sciences. The empirical study was conducted in 2024 and involved the analysis and assessment of information on USR practices published on the websites of 39 Polish higher education institutions (HEIs) that had signed the “Declaration of University Social Responsibility”. Findings: Based on literature and empirical studies, the authors demonstrates that the USR aligns with the principles of modern university management, and that its incorporation into the organisational structure may effectively contribute to enhancing institutional resilience to risks, as well as to the development of future-oriented competencies. Originality/value: The essence of the presented approach lies in the continuous development of cooperation among various groups of external and internal stakeholders (students, university staff, representatives of the socio-economic environment, etc.). This cooperation may result in the creation of interdisciplinary teams, developing strategies and action plans aimed at better aligning academic education with the needs not only of the labour market but also of future generations. The research conducted in 2024 among the universities that are signatories of the “USR Declaration” led to the creation of a list of good practices, which may serve as inspiration for those institutions wishing to develop the idea of USR.
Objective: This study aimed to develop a measurement system to investigate the mechanical behavior of materials under applied force. The system was designed to evaluate the relationship between displacement and applied force and to analyze material deformation. Methods: The measurement system comprised two high-resolution cameras, a robotic arm, and programmed sensors, all mounted on a custom-designed support structure. The components were selected based on a thorough review of the literature and the specific requirements for material testing. During the experiments, the system induced controlled deflection in the central region of the specimen. Surface deformation was tracked using custom-developed software, which reconstructed a 3-D model of the material based on specific tracking points. The displacement data were then used to generate a force-displacement curve. Hysteresis fields were computed to further analyze the material’s mechanical response. Results: The system successfully reconstructed accurate 3-D surface models of the specimens during mechanical deformation. Force-displacement curves generated from the measurements provided detailed insights into the mechanical properties of the materials. The analysis of the hysteresis fields revealed deviations from expected behavior, offering information on the material’s response to applied force. Conclusions: The measurement system proved to be an effective tool for characterizing material behavior under applied force. Its ability to integrate precise hardware with custom software allowed for accurate 3-D modeling and reliable force-displacement analysis. The results demonstrated the system’s applicability in material research and quality control. Future work may focus on extending its capabilities to a broader range of materials and testing conditions.

The aim of this paper was the application of a new dynamic-passive method of treatment in correction of hallux valgus and coexisting static deformities of the foot (transverse-plane and plano-valgus foot). Methods: The study involved 50 patients; 26 with full big toe correction after the passive correction grip (group I) and 24 with big toe correction requiring additional passive abduction (group II). The patients regularly performed exercises using the designed device according to the planned schedule. The progress of the correction was assessed by a medical examination and additional tests. Results: The cross-sectional area [cm2 ] of the abductor hallucis muscle in three-time points among I and II groups of patients with the hallux valgus was measured based on MRI images. The STIR examination showed, among others, the abductor hallucis muscle edema after exercises with the DPc device were carried out. It evidences that exercises with the new device activate the muscle. Alignment of the big toes of both feet in groups I and II were obtained with a statistically significant result ( p < 0.05). The percentage progression of correction for HV and I/II IM was calculated. Conclusions: Based on the new correction approach the alignment of the big toe phalanges and the remaining toes was obtained. The passive setup of the tendons with their distal inserts at the level of the big toe phalanges to the correct path of their course with the withdrawal of articular subluxations was obtained. Simultaneously, the big toe's passive correction was dynamically consolidated through a specially selected set of exercises.

These challenges are met by the concept of LM - as an inspiration and an opportunity to accelerate remedial and pro-development actions. Originality/value: The article is dedicated to people interested in the theory and practice of the LM concept. The use of the methods and tools proposed by the author in various functional areas of the university may bring about beneficial changes in the form of improvements in activities, time savings, as well as rationalization and greater efficiency of the implemented processes.
Objectives: The paper presents preliminary results on the assessment of algorithms used in image processing of the grain damage degree. The purpose of the work is developing a tool allowing to analyse sample cross-sections of rye germs. Methods: The analysis of the grain cross-sections was carried out on the basis of a series their photos taken at equal time intervals at a set depth. The cross-sections will be used to create additional virtual cross-sections allowing to analyse the whole sample volume. The ultimate plan is to generate two cross-sections perpendicular to each other. Based on volumetric data read from the sample section, a three-dimensional model of an object will be generated. Results: The analysis of model surface will allowed us to detect possible grain damage. The developed method of preparing the research material and the proprietary application allowed for the identification of internal defects in the biological material (cereal grains). Conclusions: The presented methodology may be used in the agri-food industry in the future. However, much research remains to be done. These works should primarily aim at significantly reducing the time-consuming nature of individual stages, as well as improving the quality of the reconstructed image.
Conventional orthodontic treatment with stainless steel orthodontic wires may be detrimental to oral health, as it contributes to demineralized lesions and increases adhesion and bacterial biofilm formation, which contributes to cavity development. An alternative that has been investigated to reduce the side effects of orthodontic treatment is the use of coating materials with antimicrobial nanoparticles. This study aims to evaluate the antiadherent and antibacterial properties of TiO2-coated and TiO2:Ag-coated stainless steel orthodontic wires against S. mutans bacteria. Methods: In the sol–gel method, TiO2:Ag thin films were deposited on stainless steel orthodontic wires. Coated archwires were analyzed for their antibacterial and antiadherent properties. The evaluation of Streptococcus mutans adhesion to the orthodontic wires’ surface was conducted according to the type of coating used, biofilm formation assay, and measurement of the pH of the bacterial community. Results: In the microbiological test, the TiO2:Ag coatings revealed a statistically significant difference in terms of microbial adhesion and biofilm formation by Streptococcus mutans. The TiO2:Ag coating on stainless steel wire increased pH levels in the saliva environment. Conclusions: It can be concluded that antimicrobial orthodontic wires coated with silver- TiO2 nanoparticles using the sol–gel thin film are a promising choice for improving orthodontic treatment.

Post-process modifications in the form of Hot Isostatic Pressing or surface treatment methods such as sandblasting ormachining have been widely used in the case of improving the quality of elements manufactured with the use of EBM (Electron Beam Melting). The corrosion resistance of titanium alloys for medical applications is a key and critical aspect for the use of personalized components as implants, especially when investigating the issue of additive manufacturing. This paper presents the results of research on the influence of HIP processing on the functional properties of the material produced with the use of EBM, considering the aspect of reconstructive medicine. Both the influence of surface modification and the influence of post-process treatment on microstructural, mechanical, and corrosion properties were investigated. A wide range of research has been carried out using scanning and transmission electron microscopy methods, in combination with three-point static bending tests and performing corrosion tests using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical spectroscopic impedance (EIS) in Hank‘s solution. The results showed that HIP treatment has a positive effect on the corrosive properties of the material in terms of increased corrosion resistance compared to materials not subjected to this type of post-process treatment. This fact is also related to the change of the alloy microstructure and the change of mechanical properties towards increased plasticity. In the case of the production of personalized implants with the use of EBM, it is worth considering the benefits of the HIP.

This article presents the main problems associated with cereal harvesting in sloping areas. The presented innovative aerodynamic system supporting the separating unit of combine harvester can be one of the ways to counteract the negative effects of harvesting machines work on slopes. The Monte Carlo numerical method, presented in this article, was applied in the optimization of an aerodynamic sieve separation process on an inclined terrain. The given variables are the transverse slope of separator α (of the sieve), longitudinal slope β and the output of the main and side fans. The Monte Carlo method makes it possible to determine an optimized set of parameters (α = 10°, β = 2.8°, δ = 9°), the output of the main fan (0.67 m3 s−1) and the output of the side fan (1.86 m3 s−1), allowing to obtain the best indicator values of 2.1% grain loss and 97.5% grain purity.

As carrot seeds are notoriously slow to germinate and are often irregular in breaking dormancy, new methods of stimulation are still sought. This study examines for the first time the effect of an algal extract and static magnetic field (SMF) and their synergistic effect on carrot seeds germination. The algal extract, produced from freshwater macroalgae - Cladophora glomerata, was used directly to the paper substrate at a dose of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 %. The exposure of seeds to the magnetic field (500 mT and 1 T) was applied for 3, 6 and 12 min. The highest germination ability of carrot seedlings was observed for 20 and 80 % algal extract. The weakest germination was observed for the highest concentration of algal extract causing the highest amount of abnormal and dead seedlings. Parallel use of seeds stimulated with magnetic field and algal extract did not increase the number of germinated seeds significantly. Carrot’s seeds treated with algal extract showed increased content of elements - macro- Ca, K, Mg, S and microelements Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn. Future experiments are required to confirm the stimulation effect of algal extract (optimal concentration) and magnetic field (various induction values) on seeds germination.

The paper presents the effects of the application of a new technical solution along with medical procedures. This approach aims to correct the collapsed transverse arch of the foot and thus restore the physiological course of the anatomical structures. In this way, the alignment of the toes is achieved, thus also eliminating valgus of the big toe. In the article are presented results for 19 patients with stage I and 22 patients with stage II of the foot deformities. Patients applied the orthosis at 57 h daily per one year. Physical examination and X-ray scans were used to assess correction progress. Angles between individual bones of the foot were compared. Correction of the transverse arch of the foot reduces the remain toes deformities of the foot (II–V). The HV angle in the group of patients with the degree I deformity before and after the therapy was 18.38 (3.18) and 15.28 (2.68), respectively, and for patients with degree II deformity it was 19.28 (2.98) and 16.3. (3.28). The correction deficit was reduced in stage I from 22% to 1.33% and in stage II from 28% to 8.6% (p < .05). The proposed approach to treating feet with the developed device, ie Forefoot arch-type orthosis: (1) restores spatial arrangement of tendons, bones, and ligaments and prevents the development of foot contractures (2) enables gradual stretching of extra-articular and capsular contractures (3) can reduce forefoot pain and improves the quality of life.

This article presents research conducted on various polymer models imitating biological structures. Tests were conducted using a newly developed research method described in [1]. The purpose of our research was to check if the measuring system [1] is able to distinguish multilayer samples. Test materials were two different polymer models which were subjected to pressure in the central point. Marked points on the external surface of the sample were followed during the measurement. The arrangement of points on the image allowed to reconstruct the 3D surface of the sample and to determine the displacement of the analysed points. Measurements were repeated 10 times to ensure the representativeness (credibility) of the conducted research. Statistical tests and artificial neural networks (ANN) were used to classify the examined samples. We used 5-fold cross-validation for training and validating the ANN. The entire set of 75 cases was divided into 5 equinumerous subsets. The obtained results suggest that the proposed method distinguished between the tested samples on the basis of results. Analysed materials react differently to the given mechanical factor.
This paper presents the current state of the art of noninvasive glucose monitoring. In recent years, we can observe constant increase in the incidence of diabetes. About 40% of all performed blood tests apply to the glucose tests. Formerly, this lifestyle disease occurred mainly in rich countries, but now it is becoming more common in poorer countries. It is related to the increase in life expectancy, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and other factors. Untreated diabetes may cause many complications or even death. For this reason, daily control of glucose levels in people with this disorder is very important. Measurements with a traditional glucometer are connected with performing finger punctures several times a day, which is painful and uncomfortable for patients. Therefore, researches on other methods are ongoing. A method that would be fast, noninvasive and cheap could also enable testing the state of the entire population, which is necessary because of the number of people currently living with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Although the first glucometer was made in 1966, the first studies on glucose level measurement in tear film were documented as early as 1937. This shows how much a noninvasive method of diabetes control is needed. Since then, there have been more and more studies on alternative methods of glucose measurement, not only from tear fluid, but also from saliva, sweat, or transdermally.
This paper presents a research which involves the observation of the movement of points presented on a material surface under the influence of mechanical extortion. Tests were performed using two 15 mm silicone layers, one of which contained 1 mm thick elements of nitrile-butadiene rubber. Analysed materials were structurally heterogeneous tissue phantoms. Test results that were obtained indicated that the developed method allows detecting inhomogeneity and its approximate location, what may be used in pathological state prevention.
