his study investigates the influence of constitutive model parameters on both the global and local response of reinforced concrete beams. Advanced numerical simulations require appropriate material models to represent the specimen behaviour, so this research compares simplified engineering procedures with the Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) model. A single representative specimen was analysed using a high-resolution Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system to provide dense experimental data for precise calibration. The investigation focuses on identifying the specific tension stiffening description that best reflects the fracture kinematics recorded by the optical system. Results indicate that the strain-dependent approach (specifically the Massicotte model) offers superior consistency with experimental crack patterns and load-deflection curves. In contrast, models based on fracture energy exhibited unphysical blurring of damage zones and poorer crack localization. The study concludes that broad validation extending beyond global load-deflection curves, utilizing local displacement fields from DIC, is essential for an objective assessment of numerical model quality and the optimization of concrete structure design.
Cigarette production is a highly automated process in which friction between fibrous materials plays a key role in the handling, transport, and packaging of tobacco products. Excessive friction often leads to sorting slot blockages and production line downtime, highlighting clear economic relevance. This study examined the tribological behaviour of selected cigarette types, focusing on the interaction between cigarette tube material and the anodised aluminium track of the transport and sorting machine. Experimental research combined classic surface roughness measurements with the optical digital image correlation (DIC) method, ensuring high accuracy and repeatability under controlled environmental conditions. The average static friction coefficient was found to be 0.28, with noticeable differences observed between sample groups taken from different cigarette packs, as characterised later in the study. Moreover, the developed DIC-based setup proved effective for analysing subtle tribological interactions. These findings provide quantitative insights into material performance and offer practical guidance for reducing friction-related production issues within the tobacco industry.

The aim of this study was to experimentally evaluate the compressive and flexural strength of a composite consisting of a polystyrene core reinforced with varying numbers of glass fiber layers embedded in epoxy resin. Tests conducted using the digital image correlation method demonstrated that both the number of laminate layers and their placement significantly influence the ultimate load-bearing capacity and failure mechanics of the specimens. The proposed composite material may be promising as a potential structural solution in the construction industry.
With the advantages of non-contact, quick and high accuracy, binocular stereo vision technology is popular in the fields of industrial inspection and measurement. To improve the result of stereo matching, phase consistency constrain based on the fringe projection profilometry (FPP) is performed. The phase unwrapping is generally employed to avoid the phase ambiguity, which is unrobust or time consuming. Aiming at this problem, a digital image correlation (DIC) assisted phase consistency method is proposed to achieve stereo matching with high accuracy, only three fringe patterns and one digital speckle pattern are needed. Two-step strategy is performed to get the homonymy points. The epipolar constraint and DIC algorithm can get the matching with pixel level, and then the wrapping consistency constraint is used to get a sub-pixel matching. To improve the matching accuracy, the Hilbert transform is employed to compensate the phase nonlinear error. As to the regions with low modulation, the disparity refinement algorithm based on neighboring disparity constrain is performed. The experiment results show that the reconstruction accuracy of proposed method is comparative with the multi-step phase shift plus multi-frequency heterodyne method.

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is mainly used for testing compact surfaces and rarely used in testing unbound materials, such as materials for road bases. Testing unbound mixtures requires the use of a special stand that ensures the achievement of the appropriate shape of the unbound material being tested. For this purpose, a box with a transparent partition is required. The obtained observation results confirm the possibility of using DIC also for observing fragmented media.

This study investigates the fatigue damage development in MAR-M247, a nickel-based superalloy with aluminide coating, using the digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The alloy’s microstructures, including fine, coarse, and columnar grains, were analyzed to understand their influence on fatigue crack initiation and propagation. Fatigue tests were conducted at room temperature under controlled force, with strain evolution monitored through non-contact full-field DIC measurements. Results revealed that fine-grained MAR-M247 exhibited superior fatigue resistance due to uniform strain distribution, while coarse-grained and columnar structures showed pronounced strain localization and earlier crack initiation. The application of aluminide coatings did not significantly affect strain distribution across the different microstructures but highlighted complex interactions between coating and grain structure under cyclic loading. These findings provide critical insights into optimizing the performance of MAR-M247 for high-stress applications.
n this contribution, electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) and digital image correlation (DIC) are combined for strain analysis around a notch. The investigations are demonstrated using an epoxy notched cantilever bending beam. For the evaluation of the experimental raw data a special method is used, which includes parametrization of the notch surrounding region and optimized smoothing. Thus, the determination of more precise results of the ESPI and DIC analyses is enabled compared to standard evaluation procedures. The deformation measurement methods complement each other profitably, considering the respective limitations and potentials of the ESPI and DIC.

This paper presents the results of laboratory tests obtained using the ARAMIS 6M digital image correlation method. The displacement measurement and deformation assessment were carried out for CFS beams with a cross-section of Σ200×70×2 and a span of 2700 mm, made of S350GD steel, reinforced and unreinforced (reference), loaded in a four-point bending scheme. The beams were reinforced with SikaWrap 230 C fabric glued to the edge stiffeners using SikaDur 330 adhesive. The tests were carried out for two cases, i.e., with the possibility of cross-section deplanation at the supports and for the lack of deplanation at the supports. Based on the obtained results, it was found that in the case of vertical and horizontal displacements, the use of the proposed reinforcement has a particularly beneficial effect for the case when there is no possibility of cross-section deplanation at the supports.
Przedstawiono również wyniki symulacji numerycznych uproszczonego modelu przestrzennego prętowo-membranowego niniejszej konstrukcji, stanowiącego pierwszy krok do przeprowadzenia dalszych analiz, bardziej złożonych analiz, w szczególności dokładniejszego modelowania połączeń prętowo-membranowych. Przystąpiono do budowy rzeczywistego modelu konstrukcji tensegrity możliwego do przebadania w warunkach laboratoryjnych, w szczególności poprzez przeprowadzenie badań z wykorzystaniem aparatury Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Uzyskane w ten sposób wyniki w postaci map odkształceń zestawiono z analogicznymi wynikami dla modelu numerycznego konstrukcji prototypowej. Na etapie kalibracji modeli laboratoryjnych próbek w testach jedno- i dwuosiowych uzyskano satysfakcjonującą zbieżność pomiędzy rezultatami badań laboratoryjnych i symulacji numerycznych, co zostało opisane w odrębnych pozycjach bibliograficznych. W kontekście modelu rzeczywistego tensegrity i jego numerycznego odpowiednika można zauważyć pewne podobieństwa, natomiast sam model numeryczny wymaga dalszego rozwoju, gdyż zastosowane w nim uproszczenia (wyidealizowana geometria nieuwzględniająca imperfekcji) mogą być zbyt daleko idące. This paper discusses the design and construction of a prototype bar-membrane tensegrity structure, with particular emphasis on the shaping of rod-membrane joints and methods for connecting technical fabric. A step-by-step design process for structural engineering was outlined. Laboratory tests of selected materials, designed element connections, and those involving the proposed tensegrity structure were described. Numerical simulation results of a simplified three-dimensional bar-membrane model of this structure were also presented. It constituted the first step towards more complex analyses, and in particular, more accurate modeling of bar-membrane connections. Moreover, uniaxial and biaxial laboratory tests of two technical fabrics were conducted to determine strength parameters. Selected types of fabric-to-fabric connections were also tested in the laboratory: welded, glued, sewn, as well as fabric-to-bar connections using metal eyelets, to estimate the load-bearing capacity of such connections. Finite element models were created to simulate uniaxial and biaxial tests for both technical fabrics. The initial tensegrity structure model was designed as an idealized (simplified) rod-membrane system in the form of a regular icosahedron. A real tensegrity structure model suitable for laboratory testing was built to conduct tests using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) equipment. The resulting strain maps were compared with analogous results for the numerical model of the prototype structure. During the calibration of the laboratory models of the samples in uniaxial and biaxial tests, satisfactory convergence between the results of the laboratory tests and the numerical simulations was achieved, as described in separate bibliographic references. Moreover, there were some similarities between the current bar-membrane tensegrity model and its numerical counterpart, but the numerical model itself requires further development, as its simplifications (idealized geometry that ignores imperfections) may be excessive. Nevertheless, the measured strain maps align with the numerically identified extreme strain zones, forming characteristic trajectories and areas. The numerical model presented in this paper will be further developed to represent the actual system as faithfully as possible.
Structural elements made of wood, are finding more and more applications in construction. They are becoming increasingly popular again due to their ecological nature, as shown by the latest high-rise construction projects. The development of modern wooden structures is forcing designers to look for new solutions in workmanship. New technologies such as glued-laminated timber and cross-laminated timber are currently undergoing many analyses, such as verification for load-bearing capacity, stiffness, fire resistance, acoustics and life cycle assessment. The most popular at present is massive timber. Structures made with this technology consist mainly of cross-laminated and glued-laminated timber elements. Research on cross-laminated timber has mainly focused on its bending and shear strength or modeling approaches to estimate bending strength and failure mechanisms. From the point of view of high-rise construction, aspects of compression behaviors timber elements and their lateral performance are also relevant. In this study, a nonlinear material model based on Hill’s anisotropic plasticity potential was calibrated to determine the extent to which it is suitable for simulating simple experimental tests. To this end, experimental compression tests were carried out on wooden specimens at three different angles to the fiber direction. Data from the experiments were collected in parallel using two methods: reading the force and displacement of the machine head; and using the Aramis system to observe the surface of the specimen and determine the displacements using DIC. For comparison with numerical models, both displacement fields and force-displacement curves were averaged against individual samples using proprietary codes written in Python.

The cracking resistance of concrete is of paramount importance in the context of structural integrity and stability. Therefore, analysing fracture propagation in concrete is essential to evaluate resistance to crack propagation. The critical stress intensity factor KIc is one of the most often used fracture parameters when analysing fracture processes in concrete members. The critical stress intensity factor can be evaluated through standard laboratory tests described in RILEM recommendations. Digital image correlation (DIC) is a new measurement technique that provides the possibility of determining KIc in an alternative way. However, both measurement methods are subjected to certain challenges that may affect the results obtained. The question arises of whether the measurements by the standard RILEM method and by the method based on DIC give comparable results of concrete fracture parameters. The experimental investigation presented in the research paper deals with comparing test results of KIc, which were measured by two testing methods. To determine the critical stress intensity factor of concrete, the standard method based on the three-point bend test was applied as the basic testing method, and the ARAMIS 2D system based on DIC was used as a second testing approach. Moreover, aspects such as the influence of the type of aggregate on KIc and whether the type of aggregate would make a difference when assessing the impact of the test method on the results of KIc were analysed.

Krytyczny współczynnik intensywności naprężeń betonu badano na belkach o długości 700 mm i przekroju poprzecznym 80 × 150 mm z uformowaną szczeliną początkową 50 mm w teście trójpunktowego zginania.

This paper primarily investigates the deformation behavior of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) with lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) at early ages. Comparative experiments were conducted on specimens prepared with pre-wetted and dry aggregates and with different water-to-cement ratios. The digital image correlation (DIC) technique was used to measure deformation and calculate the principal strains on the surface of specimens. The variation of global strains and local strains in mortar and aggregates at early ages were analyzed. The results showed that pre-wetted lightweight aggregates can enhance the effect of internal curing, thereby reducing the early-age shrinkage of concrete, and weakening the discreteness of strain distribution in concrete, thus theoretically reducing the risk of cracking. The minimum principal strains of mortar and aggregates did not exhibit a simultaneous increase and decrease trend, but rather interacted with each other, and reached a dynamic equilibrium with moisture transfer between them. The maximum principal strains of aggregate were significantly greater than those of mortar. The effectiveness of internal curing does not increase linearly with an increase in the water-to-cement ratio, but first increases and then decreases, with the optimal internal curing effect achieved around a water-to-cement ratio of 0.40 at early ages.

Advanced Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) is a highly flowable concrete that completely avoids vibration during casting. This paper explains the properties and performance in formwork of this highly flowable SCC, and the lateral pressure exerted on the sides of the formwork. In this investigation, a lightweight plastic system panel was used to cast the concrete column. The reactions of materials in real time and how the process of hardening occurs were investigated. Thus, this study discusses the casting rate, rheology, workability, lateral pressure, and plastic shrinkage of SCC. Using Digital Image Correlation, it also discusses physical and mechanical properties at early ages and at the hardening stage of 28 days. The properties at these time points are critical facts that should be considered during the design of formwork. In this paper, the most advanced techniques are used to measure lateral pressure exerted at different heights on the sides of the formwork.
Compressive strength is the basic parameter determining the quality of concrete. The addition of fibers to concrete allows us to create a composite with unique properties. The resulting fiber concrete can be tested in many ways, and one of the most interesting and still developing parameter is the residual flexural tensile strength. The current market situation in the construction industry in Central and Western Europe related to the problem of obtaining qualified manual workers and the prices of building materials encourage the design and thorough testing of increasingly complex products, including modern concrete. The relationship between compressive strength and residual strength is an unexplored area that is worth developing in scientific studies. The article presents the relationship between the compressive strength of designed fibre reinforced concrete and its residual flexural tensile strength. The test program included the analysis of concrete in compressive strength classes: C16/20, C25/30, C30/37 and C70/85 made of cement CEM II/B-V 42.5 R - HSR/NA and CEM I 42.5 N - MSR/NA. In each of the designed concrete classes, two types of hook-shaped steel fibres with variable slenderness (l/d ratio) of 50 and 67 were used. Fibre dosage was also diversified and set at 20, 30, 40 and 45 kg/m3 of the concrete mixture. Residual strength tests were performed in accordance with PN-EN 14651 using the ARAMIS device for digital image correlation. The experimental findings showing the relationship between the compressive strength of concrete and its residual flexural tensile strength are included. The experimental data obtained show that increasing the compressive strength class of concrete does not result in an evident increase in the residual flexural tensile strength. The research also analyzed the influence of curing time of concrete on its residual strength, including tests after 28, 180 and 360 days after concreting. The obtained results confirm the significant influence of steel fibres in transferring bending loads. The influence of sample maturation time on the compressive strength of the designed fibre concrete was also confirmed.

In gravity drop hammer forging, the ram is lifted to a certain height and then released. During the downward motion, the hammer is accelerated by gravity and strikes the workpiece. The operational environment of these machines presents adverse conditions, such as extreme temperatures, high impact velocity, and intense energy generation. These aspects make the instrumentation of these machines highly challenging, leading to the use of theoretical models to describe their dynamic behavior. However, these models involve simplifications that reduce the accuracy of the analyses. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) as a monitoring tool for the hot forging process of AA 6351 aluminum alloy using a drop hammer. Digital Image Correlation allows for the quantitative analysis of the evolution of the workpiece deformation during the process, providing valuable data on process and machine performance. The results obtained demonstrate that Digital Image Correlation is a promising approach for monitoring the hot forging process with a drop hammer, with the potential to enhance the quality of the final product and process efficiency.
