Meniscus injuries are increasingly being treated using arthroscopic surgical techniques, and isokinetic measurement is commonly used to assess return of knee joint function. Accurate estimation of tissue loading in the knee joint requires the use of models tailored to the gender of the patient, as anatomical differences between men and women have previously been shown to affect the results of similar studies. This paper describes developing the model to analyse knee loads among patients with meniscus injuries treated with a novel surgical technique. Personalized patient data were collected from their knee magnetic resonance imaging scans and knee isokinetic measurements performed at 60 deg/s angular velocity. The knee joint loads estimated with the model proposed in this work demonstrated higher compressive forces in the knee joint, indicating the need for greater caution when using isokinetic measurements safely after meniscus-save arthroscopy surgery.

Introduction: This systematic review evaluates various studies on deep learning algorithms for generating synthetic CT images from MRI data, focusing on challenges in image quality and accuracy in current synthetic CT generation methods. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly important in clinical settings due to its detailed visualization and noninvasive nature, making it a valuable tool for advancing patient care and identifying new areas for research. Materials and Methods: In this study we conducted a thorough search across several databases to identify studies published between January 2009 and January 2024 on using deep learning to generate synthetic CT (sCT) images from MRI for radiotherapy. The review focused on peer-reviewed, English-language studies and excluded unpublished, non-English, and irrelevant studies. Data on deep learning methods, input modalities, and anatomical sites were extracted and analyzed using a result-based synthesis approach. The review categorized 84 studies by anatomical site, following PRISMA guidelines for summarizing the findings. Results: The U-Net model is the most frequently used deep learning model for generating synthetic CT images from MRI data, with 34 articles highlighting its effectiveness in capturing fine details, Conditional GANs are also widely used, while Cycle-GANs and Pix2pix are effective in image translation tasks. Significant differences in performance metrics, such as MAE and PSNR, were observed across anatomical regions and models, highlighting the variability in accuracy among different deep learning approaches. Conclusion: This review underscores the need for continued refinement and standardization in deep learning approaches for medical imaging to address variability in performance metrics across anatomical regions and models.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that presents significant challenges for early diagnosisand intervention. Traditional approaches for diagnosing AD using MRI images are labor-intensiveand often subjective, resulting in the need for automated, accurate solutions to support clinicians in early-stage detection. This study investigates the use of vision transformer (ViT) for the classification of Alzheimer's disease stages using MRI images. By treating MRI imagesas sequences of tokens, ViT models capture both global and local spatial dependencies, which enhances their ability to recognize structural brain changes characteristic of AD. The model was trained on a diverse dataset containing four AD categories–Moderate Demented, Mild Demented, Very Mild Demented, and Non-Demented–achievingan overall classification accuracy of 98.9%. This result highlights the efficacy of transformer-based models in distinguishing between subtle structural brain alterations. Future directions for this study include fine-tuning the model on larger datasets and exploring the integration of multi-modal data to further support AD diagnosis and treatment strategies. The findings indicate that vision transformer have the potential to transform diagnostic imaging for neurodegenerative disorders by providing a robust, scalable, and precise tool for early AD detection.

Przyszłe kierunki badań obejmują dostosowanie modelu do większych zbiorów danych oraz zbadanie możliwości integracji danych multimodalnych w celu dalszego wsparcia diagnostyki i strategii leczenia choroby Alzheimera. Wyniki wskazują, że transformer wizyjny ma potencjał, aby zrewolucjonizować diagnostykę obrazową zaburzeń neurodegeneracyjnych, zapewniając solidne, skalowalne i precyzyjne narzędzie do wczesnego wykrywania choroby Alzheimera.

The Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging is a very important medical tool for diagnosis of the internal organs of the patient. The major problem associated with MRI is its high noise during operation responsible for anxiety, discomfort and can be harmful for the patient as well as long exposure raises the safety concerns for the operating staffs. This study involves the characterization of the noise in the vicinity of 1.5 Tesla Mobile Imaging Trailer-MRI (MIT-MRI) system, aimed at evaluating the acoustic parameters in the examination room during scanning. The acoustic measurements were carried out using the microphones located inside the MRI examination room for variations of Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) gradient pulse sequences. The sound recordings depicted the waveforms of complex acoustic pulses with high Sound Pressure Level (SPL) spikes of impulse nature. Results revealed equivalent SPL in the MRI examination room exceeds 90 dB(A) and the peak noise was consistently above 101.5 dB(C) and DWI sequence with oscillating gradient (DWI-og) reported peak SPL of 105.9 dB(C). The dominance of the noise is identified in the frequency range of 500-3000 Hz for all scanning sequence. Results indicate that sound levels are high in the mobile scanning facility as compared to the stationary MRI in the hospitals. The noise in the control room and chiller room were also high. Given that these acoustic measurements surpass recommended noise standards, the significance of ear protection is emphasized. These results can be useful in designing the noise reduction strategies to improve the patient comfort and safety.

The infiltrative nature and rapid progression of gliomas have made them the most prevalent as well as aggressive type of brain tumour. In the clinical routine, it is a difficult task to distinguish tumour boundaries from the healthy cells. For brain tumour diagnoses as well as evaluations of the intra operative treatment response, there is extensive utilisation of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). With segmentation, infected regions of the brain tissue can be extracted from MRIs. The tumour region’s segmentation is a critical task for cancer diagnosis, treatment as well as treatment outcome assessment. The significant architecture named the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in deep learning is used. The CNN has shown outstanding improvement in the objects’ recognition as well as classification. It has much efficiency in a wide range of problems which deal with machine learning as well as computer vision. Akin to other techniques of deep learning, much difficulty is involved in training the CNN. In this work, proposed a novel meta-heuristic based algorithms have been used for optimizing CNN using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), hybrid Shuffled Complex Evolution (SCE) with ACO and hybrid SCE with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The results show that the proposed method produces better results than existing methods.

Naciekowy charakter i szybki postęp glejaków uczyniły je najczęstszym i najbardziej agresywnym rodzajem nowotworu mózgu.

Cel. Celem niniejszego badania jest przegląd najnowszej literatury dotyczącej problemów w obrazowaniu metodą rezonansu magnetycznego. Materiał i metody. W celu zebrania informacji przeprowadzono kompleksowy przegląd literatury, by zidentyfikować i przeanalizować wyzwania związane z procedurami MRI u pacjentów otyłych.

Introduction. Obesity, characterized by excessive body fat accumulation, is a significant public health issue affecting millions globally. It is commonly measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI), with a BMI of 30 or higher indicating obesity. The prevalence of obesity has risen dramatically over the past few decades, leading to an increase in related health conditions such as diabetes, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndrome. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a crucial diagnostic tool that provides high-resolution images of internal structures without ionizing radiation. It is widely used in the diagnostics of diseases related to obesity. However, performing MRI scans on obese patients presents unique challenges. Aim. This study aims to review the current literature regarding the problems associated with MRI due to obesity. Materials and methods. The comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify and analyze the challenges associated with MRI procedures in obese patients. Modern literature and databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched using keywords such as “MRI,” “obesity,” “challenges,” “limitations,” “image quality,” and “safety.” The search included articles published in the last 20 years to ensure up-to-date information. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed studies, reviews, and case reports focusing on technical, clinical, and practical MRI-related issues in obese populations. State of Knowledge. M RI i s a c rucial d iagnostic t ool o f m odern medicine, offering detailed images of internal structures without ionizing radiation. However, its application in obese patients presents several challenges: problems with implantation of the peripheral venous catheter, which increases the risk of complications; scanner bore size, which can be too narrow for severely obese patients and can lead to discomfort or the inability to perform the scan; coils, which are essential for signal reception, may not fit appropriately around larger body parts, affecting image quality; increased adipose tissue can attenuate the MRI signal, reducing signal-to-noise ratio and compromising image clarity, and weight limits of MRI tables (commonly around 250-300 kg or 600-700 lbs), which makes it impossible to scan for patients that exceed those limits.

Wprowadzenie. Cel. Przegląd stanowi kontynuację rozważań dotyczących problemów z wykonywaniem badań MRI u pacjentów otyłych opublikowanych na łamach „Inżyniera i Fizyka Medycznego” 13(4), 2024, 411-416. Stan wiedzy. Zmienne w czasie magnetyczne pola gradientowe i pola elektromagnetyczne o częstotliwości radiowej (RF) stosowane w procedurach MRI mogą indukować napięcie prowadzące do przepływu prądu. Urazy wywołane temperaturą stanowią aż 59% zdarzeń niepożądanych związanych z systemami MRI i stanowią poważne problemy związane z wykonywaniem badań MRI, szczególnie u osób otyłych.

Introduction. Obesity is becoming a serious threat to public health, although it is often perceived rather as an aesthetic issue than an actual health problem. However, it ranks as the sixth most common cause of death in the world and the fourth most common cause of death in Poland. It is also a risk factor for chronic diseases requiring diagnostics using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Aim. The review continues with considerations regarding problems with performing MRI examinations in obese patients published in the previous issue of Inżynier i Fizyk Medyczny Magazine, 13(4), 2024, 411-416. State of Knowledge. Time-varying gradient magnetic fields and RF electromagnetic fields used in MRI procedures can induce a voltage leading to current flow. This phenomenon generates induction heating, which is characterized by heating materials without direct contact with the energy source. Temperature increase depends on the duration of exposure and total deposited energy, which depends, among other things, on the patient’s body weight. The thermal effect may cause whole- body hyperthermia and local temperature increase with the risk of burns at the point of contact of the patient’s tissues with each other (skin-skin burns) or at the point of contact of the skin with elements of medical equipment (skin-device burns). Thermal-related injuries account for as much as 59% of adverse events involving MRI systems and constitute the serious problems associated with performing MRI examinations, especially in obese people.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is an important tool for both radiologists and clinicians, but also psychologists, neuropsychologists and others dealing with the broadly understood functioning of the brain. It allows you to observe brain activity and thus later, for example, plan surgical procedures on this most complicated organ of the human body. This test is very demanding, both on the part of the person performing it and the person preparing the result. This work presents two cases: a 9-year-old patient and a 64-year-old man in whom tests were performed to generate brain activity fields and connections between individual brain centers – using the so-called tractography. Both of these cases show the great usefulness of such research, and at the same time draw attention to the fact that both techniques should be performed and analyzed together because they complement each other and provide more complete information.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a very versatile diagnostic tool for non-invasive analysis of human organ functions, without use of ionizing radiations. Loud operating sound is the major challenge associated with the MRI technology, reaching up to 130dB. This paper analyses and compares the spectral properties of acoustic noise produced in the examination room of the mobile imaging trailer based 1.5 Tesla MRI system, during different scanning sequences of image acquisition. The analysis is useful in understanding the dynamic behavior of the sound generated inside the examination room to develop the noise reduction strategy.

Predictive maintenance (PdM) allows the prediction of early failures of medical equipment before they occur. It helps to diagnose the defaults of critical equipment in a hospital structure, namely MRI. Founded on the analysis of data collected in real time of the right parameters, thanks to intelligent sensors positioned on the equipment, using Internet of Things (IoT) technology and the practice of machine learning tools. The objective of this techniques is the implementation of algorithms capable to predict an anomaly, which will make equipment and maintenance tools increasingly autonomous and intelligent. Therefore, the idea of this project is to develop a wireless sensor network to ensure continuous monitoring of the state of MRI. The implemented solution includes an IoT monitoring system of the cold head’s cooling circuit. Based on the vibrations at the pump, it allows to monitor the motor circuit, inform the staff at each abnormal state of this system, and protect this device against any future anomalies. Thanks to the CNN algorithm implemented in this solution, the results are very satisfactory, with an accuracy >98%. This solution can be integrated into a general predictive maintenance solution for the most sensitive equipment in a hospital.

Direction-splitting implicit solvers employ the regular structure of the computational domain augmented with the splitting of the partial differential operator to deliver linear computational cost solvers for time-dependent simulations. The finite difference community originally employed this method to deliver fast solvers for PDE-based formulations. Later, this method was generalized into so-called variational splitting. The tensor product structure of basis functions over regular computational meshes allows us to employ the Kronecker product structure of the matrix and obtain linear computational cost factorization for finite element method simulations. These solvers are traditionally used for fast simulations over the structures preserving the tensor product regularity. Their applications are limited to regular problems and regular model parameters. This paper presents a generalization of the method to deal with non-regular material data in the variational splitting method. Namely, we can vary the material data with test functions to obtain a linear computational cost solver over a tensor product grid with non-regular material data. Furthermore, as described by the Maxwell equations, we show how to incorporate this method into finite element method simulations of non-stationary electromagnetic wave propagation over the human head with material data based on the three-dimensional MRI scan.

The corpus callosum is the largest commissural structure of the brain. The development of the corpus callosum in the fetal period proceeds intensively between the 8th and 20th week of pregnancy. After birth, there is parallel development of the cerebral cortex and myelination of the axons running through the corpus callosum, and the increase in the volume of the corpus callosum continues into adulthood. Disruption of the shaping process can lead to complete or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. Disturbances in the structure of the corpus callosum may result from developmental disorders, neuroectomesodermal dysplasia (phacomatosis), neurometabolic disorders, demyelinating diseases, infections and inflammation, vascular changes, neoplasms, post-traumatic and iatrogenic injuries. Early assessment of the structure of the corpus callosum can be done non-invasively using prenatal ultrasound. After birth, abnormalities of the corpus callosum may be revealed by transfontanelle ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scan of the head, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, it is MRI that is the recommended method for accurate evaluation of the corpus callosum. The paper presents MR images of cases of agenesis and dysgenesis of the corpus callosum, as well as disorders of the structure of the corpus callosum in the course of NF1, Sturge-Weber syndrome, adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD), multiple sclerosis, ADEM, Marchiafava-Bignami syndrome, Lyme borreliosis, subacute sclerosing meningitis (SSPE), ischemic lesions, arteriovenous malformation, glioblastoma multiforme, cerebral glioma, cerebral lymphoma, metastatic tumors, diffuse axonal injury (DAI), dilation of the Virchow-Robin space, and transient edema.

Re-colorization of images or movies is a challenging problem due to the infinite RGB solutions for a monochrome object. In general, the process is assisted by humans, either by providing colorization hints or relevant training data for ML/AI algorithms. Our intention is to develop a mechanism for fully unguided (and with no training data used) colorization of movies. In other words, we aim to create acceptable colored counterparts of movies in domains where only monochrome visualizations physically exist (e.g. IR, UV, MRI, etc. data). Following our past approach to image colorization, the method assumes arbitrary rgb2gray models and utilizes a few probabilistic heuristics. Additionally, we maintain the temporal stability of colorization by locally using structural similarity (SSIM) between adjacent frames. The paper explains the details of the method, presents exemplary results and compares them to the state-of-the art solutions.

Researchers address the generalization problem of deep image processing networks mainly through extensive use of data augmentation techniques such as random flips, rotations, and deformations. A data augmentation technique called mixup, which constructs virtual training samples from convex combinations of inputs, was recently proposed for deep classification networks. The algorithm contributed to increased performance on classification in a variety of datasets, but so far has not been evaluated for image segmentation tasks. In this paper, we tested whether the mixup algorithm can improve the generalization performance of deep segmentation networks for medical image data. We trained a standard U-net architecture to segment the prostate in 100 T2-weighted 3D magnetic resonance images from prostate cancer patients, and compared the results with and without mixup in terms of Dice similarity coefficient and mean surface distance from a reference segmentation made by an experienced radiologist. Our results suggest that mixup offers a statistically significant boost in performance compared to non-mixup training, leading to up to 1.9% increase in Dice and a 10.9% decrease in surface distance. The mixup algorithm may thus offer an important aid for medical image segmentation applications, which are typically limited by severe data scarcity.

Obiektywność, jednoznaczność, ilościowa prezentacja uzyskanych wyników i – co chyba najważniejsze – możliwość szacowania niepewności wyniku pomiaru powodują, iż metrologia pozostaje w ścisłym związku z postępem technologicznym. Niniejsza praca będzie traktować o aspektach metodologicznych związanych z pomiarami czasów relaksacji w systemach rezonansu magnetycznego (MR). Samo zjawisko MR jest szeroko poznanym i opisanym. W dzisiejszej dobie zajmuje ono podstawowe miejsce w wielu dziedzinach nauk biologiczno-chemicznych.

Everybody or phenomenon can be characterized by a certain number of quantities that describe it. Their cognition as a result of experiences and observations allows us to infer both about himself and about his influence on the environment or the consequences for him that result from the environment. The results of these observations and experiments very often take numerical results, less often they are descriptive values, but all of them can be described together as measurements. The science dealing with measurement is metrology, and it is the basis of all experiential disciplines because of its characteristics. Objectivity, unambiguity, quantitative presentation of the obtained results and, perhaps most importantly, the possibility of estimating the uncertainty of the measurement result make metrology closely related to technological progress. This paper will discuss the methodological aspects influencing metrological aspects which are closely related to the measurements of relaxation times in magnetic resonance imaging (MR) systems. These aspects are the influence of the temperature difference between the in vivo and in vitro studies and the choice of sequence parameters and in particular the TR repetition time on the T1 time score. The MR phenomenon itself is widely known and described. Today it occupies a fundamental place in many fields of biological and chemical sciences. However, it seems to provide the greatest service in the field of medicine. The multitude of sequences, newer and newer methods of analyzing the signal received from the coils allow for the imaging of the human body as well as the insight into its changes at the cellular level.

Magnetic resonance imaging is one of the most dynamically developing modalities in diagnostic imaging. New sequences as well as new data reconstruction algorithms significantly change this diagnostic, giving it new possibilities. Although MR allows you to get answers to the vast majority of questions posed in today’s diagnostics, it is not free from defects and artifacts. This paper focuses on the effect of noise and signal quality on the results of determining the longitudinal relaxation time. Noise is an inherent factor in any measurement method. Their influence can often call into question the obtained results. The omission of the factor which is the broadly understood noise phenomenon exposes the research experiment to failure or serious errors. From the point of view of conducting measurements, MRI is a very complicated and susceptible measurement system to the occurrence of various disturbing factors. From the non-reducible factors related to the design to the factors resulting from the protocols and sequences used by the technician or physician, they all influence the obtained image. The work focuses on one of the many factors, which are disturbances, which have their basis both in the method itself, in the equipment as well as in research protocols. The effect of signal quality in the context of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was analyzed based on a dedicated phantom.

Hyperpolarized 13C tracers offer a radiation-free option for metabolic imaging. Signal enhancement of an order of several thousand times with the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) technique allows the detection of these tracers and their immediate metabolites in living organisms with MRI/MRSI (magnetic resonance imaging/magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging) methods in real time and with high temporal resolution. The initial ‘target’ application for DNP hyperpolarized tracers was prostate cancer, a condition that could hardly be diagnosed with the FDG PET. However, several Phase 2 clinical trials currently involve not only patients with prostate cancer but also pancreatic cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, transient ischemic attack, glioblastoma multiforme, mycosis fungiodes (skin cancer), and chronic heart failure. A large number of trials that started in the last three years indicate that there could be a potential for the application of hyperpolarized 13C labeled pyruvate in the diagnosis of several conditions other than prostate cancer. One limitation for the hyperpolarized 13C-labelled tracers is their relatively short half-life. In this review, we discuss several emerging strategies for increasing tracer’s lifetime that could allow either their transportation between facilities or improve the signal-to-noise ratio in the final acquisition. We also discuss some promising diagnostic applications.
