To address the disordered inspection paths and long inspection time encountered when coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) inspect free-form surface parts, an improved ant colony algorithm was proposed to optimize the inspection path and thereby improve inspection efficiency. To enhance the optimization performance of the ant colony algorithm and overcome its shortcomings, such as low search speed and susceptibility to local optimal solutions, this work improves the initial pheromone distribution, pheromone evaporation factor, and pheromone update strategy and introduces a local search strategy. The experimental results revealed that the improved ant colony algorithm had strong search directionality in the early stages of iteration, higher search speed, and an enhanced ability to escape from local optimal solutions; the inspection paths of the free-form surface optimized by the improved ant colony algorithm were neat and aesthetically pleasing, and the inspection efficiency increased by up to 14.75%, 23.59%, and 34.21% compared with those of the classic ant colony algorithm, artificial bee colony algorithm, and genetic algorithm, respectively.

Bearings are essential components in aerospace machinery and various transportation vehicles, with the grooves inside them providing smooth tracks for rolling elements to carry loads while minimizing friction-induced wear. Accurate measurement of the dimensional and shape tolerances of these grooves is crucial. Coordinate measuring machines, known for their high precision and versatility, excel in measuring various types and shapes of workpieces. The bearing groove measurement method developed with CMMs introduces a notable innovation over conventional techniques. Unlike profilometers, which are often incapable of measuring certain groove types, this method can be applied to a broader range of samples, addressing a long-standing challenge. A comparison of uncertainty between this method and the traditional profilometer method resulted in an En value of 0.11, confirming its satisfactory measurement accuracy and compliance with the technical requirements for bearing groove geometric parameters.

The industrial production of parts with precision holes for various applications requires high manufacturing accuracy. The dimensional verification of precision holes with complex geometry remains a critical challenge in modern manufacturing, particularly in ensuring reliability and process efficiency. Existing CMM procedures are largely optimised for circular holes and lack validated methodologies for complex-shaped apertures. A new methodology for assessing the dimensional accuracy and inspection efficiency of epicycloid-shaped holes using CMMs is proposed: manufacturing surface samples with epicycloid-shaped holes using a Water Jet machine, conducting measurements on a ZEISS CONTURA CMM, optical validating measurement accuracy using microscopy on a Keyence VHX system and processing data through image segmentation of the hole, analysing results, and establishing dependencies of measurement accuracy and time on operational parameters. The dependencies of the mean deviation of epicycloid-shaped hole dimensions on the stylus movement speed and the number of measurement points have been established. Key findings indicate that the speed of the stylus significantly influences the accuracy of the measurement, while the number of probing points plays a secondary role. To address the limitations of conventional evaluation techniques, a new geometric complexity coefficient is proposed to quantify deviations from ideal shapes. This coefficient comprehensively characterises deviations from the ideal geometric shape and includes the length of the curve that forms the hole. The proposed methodology enables the optimisation of measurement parameters for complex-shaped holes and improves inspection efficiency on industrial production lines. This approach contributes original insights into the metrological assessment of non-standard geometries, addressing a significant gap in existing literature.

Computer vision-based inspection has become widely used in manufacturing industries for part identification, dimensional inspection, and guiding material handling systems. Defect-free production cannot be achieved with sampling inspection methods; therefore, a 100 percentage inspection approach is mandatory to meet the zero-defect goals of manufacturing industries. Achieving this is possible with advanced technologies, such as vision-based inspection systems. In this study, a vision-based inspection system is proposed for part identification, defect detection, and dimensional measurement. The system is validated using machined parts, including a Druck plate, Pressure plate, and Retainer. A part identification algorithm is developed based on a geometry search approach. The inspection algorithm classifies parts based on edge relationships, utilizing edge detection techniques to identify each part’s geometric features. Surface defects are identified by analyzing the pixel intensity gradients within defective regions. The system measures part dimensions using a vision system, with results comparable to those obtained from a coordinate measuring machine.

The paper presents a new method of analysis of a controlled radius (CR). The presented method was verified based on simulations of coordinate measurements and during real measurements conducted on the selected coordinate measuring machine (CMM) – ACCURA II. In addition, the investigations were conducted by means of the Calypso metrology software and the Python programming environment. Computer simulations were performed for the selected dispersion of measurement points relating to nominal data of measured products. The actual coordinate measurements were conducted by using various measurement strategies. The created method takes into account the analysis of flattening of a considered curve, for which the measurement characteristic CR is determined. The analysis was conducted based on linear regression. The advantage of the presented method is the possibility of its implementation in software of a CMM and, consequently, the use of the above-mentioned method in industry. The new method detected flat fragments of measured objects regardless of the applied number of measurement points.

This paper presents a new interim check device for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) built from an AISI 1020 carbon steel bar with the incorporation of calibrated spheres. This artifact’s construction was made to make the interim checks of machines of this type faster and cheaper. Three devices were designed based on the ISO 10360-2 standard, the good practice guide No. 42 (NPL), and prominent authors’ research on the subject. The three options are presented in detail, but only one was built due to budget, size, and adaptability restrictions. An exploratory study was conducted to verify the device’s usability in two CMMs and concluded that the differences between the measurements are not significant. However, one machine had absolute variation values and a total standard deviation higher than the other, generating a larger expanded uncertainty.

Reliable measurement uncertainty is a crucial part of the conformance/nonconformance decision-making process in the field of Quality Control in Manufacturing. The conventional GUM-method cannot be applied to CMM measurements primarily because of lack of an analytical relationship between the input quantities and the measurement. This paper presents calibration uncertainty analysis in commercial CMM-based Coordinate Metrology. For the case study, the hole-plate calibrated by the PTB is used as a workpiece. The paper focuses on thermo-mechanical errors which immediately affect the dimensional accuracy of manufactured parts of high-precision manufacturers. Our findings have highlighted some practical issues related to the importance of maintaining thermal equilibrium before the measurement. The authors have concluded that the thermal influence as an uncertainty contributor of CMM measurement result dominates the overall budgets for this example. The improved calibration uncertainty assessment technique considering thermal influence is described in detail for the use of a wide range of CMM users.

The paper presents geometrical accuracy tests of polymer spiral bevel gears. The change in geometry was quantified with reference to research models produced by incremental methods: FDM (fused deposition modeling), SLS (selective laser sintering), DLP (digital light processing) and PolyJet. Model geometry verification was made basing on the INDUSTRY 4.0 philosophy using the Klingelnberg P40 coordinate measuring machine (CMM) operating in an integrated network system. The graphs show deviations of selected parameters defining the geometry of the teeth. Analysis of the obtained results was used to select the appropriate printing technology and to improve the quality of the polymer gears. The highest 11th accuracy class of the spiral bevel gear teeth, determined according to DIN 3965, was obtained for models manufactured in PolyJet additive technology.

In this paper the problems concern to measurement of the aerodynamic profile of the wind turbine propeller in a flat steel sheet is presented. This profile creates a template for checking the correctness of the propeller profile on a fixed radius. The profile is given by a sequence of points. In order to improve the accuracy of the execution of the profile, it was advisable to calculate additional geometry points. For this purpose, the FERPRF program was used based on Ferguson cubic curves. A multiplied number of points has been introduced into the CHARSDW program, which generates a sequence of sections and arcs entered into the AutoCAD system. The initial profile cutting project created in the system as a .dxf file is entered into the PEPS CAD/CAM system. The PEPS postprocessor creates a machining program in the ISO code for the Robofil 440SLP. The correctness of the aerodynamic profile was measured on a VIS Warsaw coordinate measuring machine, using a rigid probe with a cylindrical tip.

The aerodynamic profile template was made by WEDM cutting on a Robofil 440 SLP cutter. The profile was measured by scanning on a coordinate measuring machine (WMP) with a rigid cylinder head. The result of the measurement is a text set with coordinates of the points of the cylindrical center moving along the closed internal profile in the template. Software was developed that calculates: point distances with the same indexes lying in two equal sets after scanning and in the offset set of the RDTW set. In addition, it calculates the minimum and maximum limit deviations, their indexes and the coordinate along the measured profile.

The subject of the article is an attempt to determine the impact of the applied measurement strategy on the accuracy of the measurement result. This problem is particularly crucial when measuring large objects. In these cases, it is not always possible to provide ideal conditions for the submission of particular scans. It is necessary to adjust the strategy to specific imposed conditions defined by the geometry of the object and to the time frame of the measurement itself. With regard to the above, an attempt was made to carry out a series of accuracy studies testing the structural light scanner while measuring elements of overall dimensions greater than the measuring capacity of the scanner. At the same time, various potential measuring strategies were simulated in practical applications. Our studies were conducted using a pre-designed test template with a defined distribution pattern of reference points and geometrical elements. Moreover, in order to make an in-depth investigation of the issue, some trials were undertaken with the use of limiting parameters. That means the scanner had both an excess and shortage of information required for a correct assembly of scans. Those scopes were taken into consideration in the study in order to use the acquired knowledge in practical measuring applications. Furthermore, conclusions from the conducted studies indicate peaks and troughs of respective measuring strategies with special care for determining relationships among the used strategies and the measuring accuracy parameters.

Algorithms and measurements of deviations of parallelism and perpendicularity planes and straight lines in r3 space on a coordinate measuring machine The algorithms for calculating deviations in mm/m of parallelism and perpendicularity of planes and straight lines on a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) are presented. Calculated deviations must be within the tolerance of parallelism or rectangularity given by the constructor on the surfaces of machine parts. Tolerances of parallelism and rectangularness are marked on the drawings in a rectangular frame and contain the symbol of parallelism or perpendicularity and the limit value of deviation in mm relative to one base or two bases. In the paper, deviations of parallelism and perpendicularity of planes and straight lines in mm/m measured on the CMM coordinate machine with rigid measuring head were placed.

W artykule przedstawiono zastosowanie inżynierii odwrotnej do wykonania aktualizacji dokumentacji konstrukcyjnej elementu tłocznika wielotaktowego. Obiektem badanym była płyta podstawowa przyrządu wielotaktowego o wymiarach 630x400 mm. Przyrząd podczas eksploatacji wykazywał naturalne zużycie, w wyniku którego legalizowano położenia i wielkości otworów ustalających.

Reverse engineering is concerned with the study of existing objects, whether manmade or natural, in order to discover the rules determining their endowed or natural functions, operation or adopted design assumptions. The main applications of reverse engineering include three of significance to industry: assessment of part wear, assessment of the design of a technological process, and reproduction of technical documentation of an existing part. This article presents an application of reverse engineering for updating the design documentation of a part of a multi-stage die. The studied object was the base plate of a multi-stage die, with dimensions 630x400 mm. During operation, the tool exhibited natural wear, as a result of which the positions and sizes of pinholes were verified. A 0.01-0.02 mm shift in their position after every repair as well as pinning after positioning and fastening of elements led to the situation where existing documentation was no longer accurate. The precision of making the shaped recesses on the plate and of their positions required the application of a measuring system ensuring maxi mum error of measurement at the level of 10% of the tolerance field. Such requirements were necessary for ensuring inter-operation of the reproduced plate with other parts in the die. To correctly perform the research task, methodology was developed, and a measuring device meeting the aforementioned requirements was selected. In addition, geometrical elements on the studied object that could serve to determine the origin of the coordinate system or the target dimensional base for machining were evaluated.

The paper presents the problem of assessing the accuracy of reconstructing free-form surfaces in the CMM/CAD/CAM/CNC systems. The system structure comprises a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) PMM 12106 equipped with a contact scanning probe, a 3-axis Arrow 500 Vertical Machining Center, QUINDOS software and Catia software. For the purpose of surface digitalization, a radius correction algorithm was developed. The surface reconstructing errors for the presented system were assessed and analysed with respect to offset points. The accuracy assessment exhibit error values in the reconstruction of a free-form surface in a range of ± 0.02 mm, which, as it is shown by the analysis, result from a systematic error.
